I was 11 when the original came out, my brother was 8, and my future husband was 15... we have loved the original as one of our top 5 of all time! I was so excited when I found out Tom was doing a sequel! I knew he would do it right, but I had no idea it was going to be this incredible! This movie perfectly told the full-circle story... my favorite line was Rooster's last... "lt's what my Dad would've done"... I LOST IT!!! This movie had everything I'd hoped for and then some!!! We waited nearly forever, but it was SO damn worth it!!!

I think this is one of the best movies I've ever seen. I am old though and saw the original when it came out in 1986. I actually worked in a building right at the end of the runway in Miramar (San Diego), California when the original movie came out and where Top Gun was based at the time. The original Top Gun is one of the movies I consider a "coming of age" movie for those of us that grew up in the 70's and 80's. I watched this sequel in the theatre when it came out and also streamed it for three friends (at different times) that are in my age range. It always created a serious emotional response in each one of them...as it does for me every time I see it or see a reaction to it. Great Reaction Dasha. Thank you.

Sequels are sometimes not as good as their original movie blockbuster. Top Gun Maverick is an exception where the sequel is as good if not better than the original. It brought back the nostalgia of the original as well as do a great job of introducing a new set of Top Gun characters. I especially love the way Top Gun Maverick pays tribute to both Ice Man and Goose. My understanding is that Tom Cruise fought like hell to get Val Kilmer a cameo in the movie as his character Ice Man which apparently was no small feat given Val Kilmer apparent ongoing cancer situation. A truly impressive sequel to the original Top Gun.

    * I served onboard USS Nimitz (CVN 68) back in the late 90's.
    * Mach -10 , or High Hypersonic, is 10 times the speed of sound. 7673 MPH, or 12348 Km/H.
    * Your callsign is given to you, and it's usually not complimentary.
    * Penny Benjamin--Maverick's love interest in this movie--doesn't appear in the first movie, but she is mentioned. She is the daughter in the statement about Maverick having "a history of high-speed passes over five air control towers and one admiral's daughter!" Goose's wife also mentions her as, "He told me all about the time you went ballistic with Penny Benjamin."
    * That is Val Kilmer's actual voice. Sadly, he really did have throat cancer, making it difficult for him to speak.

The bar scene where we meet the supporting cast has some fun little things going on:
When we meet Penny, the song in the background is “Let’s Dance” by David Bowie, who starred alongside Jennifer Connolly (Penny) in Labyrinth.
The song that Hangman selects on the jukebox is 86, which is the year the original Top Gun came out (1986). The song is “Slow Ride” by Foghat, which is appropriate as Hangman teases Rooster about how he flies too slow.
Rooster plays Great Balls Of Fire as it would be his last memory of his father (Goose)… Miles Teller (Rooster) learned to play the song and they did this as a live take. They were so happy with it that they added it to the soundtrack, and they edited the scene to make a music video, giving Miles Teller an officially credited cover version.
A fun line when Maverick and Rooster are stealing the F-14: “how are we going to get this museum piece in the air?”… they transported the F-14 that is on display at San Diego Air and Space Museum to the set location, so it is indeed a museum piece.

Then friends told me how they felt when it came out, and it convinced me to go ahead. I am always VERY skeptical about sequels (mainly because it seems like it's all Hollywood can do any more), so the bar was set high for this movie. I was not disappointed. Is it as good as the first one, or better? I can't decide. But it IS a great movie, and the best sequel I have seen (yes, this includes the MCU films).

Callsigns are always a strange deal. Some are given on the spot. Some have to be voted on, but are usually based on events or embarrassing stories. Some come from the pilot's (or AIRCREWMAN's) real name. Others are wonderfully descriptive based on character flaws or physical traits. When someone looks like a movie character, it's super easy.

So, Penny Benjamin is mentioned 3 times by reference in Top Gun - she was the "Admiral's Daughter" Maverick had (or wanted to have) a fling with. Obviously, they had a long history based on the clues in Maverick. The sailboat is a racing boat J-125. The last one was built in 2003 and you can have one today for only $300,000. The Porsche Penny was driving was a 1973 Porsche Carrera Targa. You can have one for $200,000. The P-51 Mustang that Maverick repairs and then flies at the end belongs to Tom Cruise and was flown by him in this movie. I believe it is valued at $two to three million dollars, currently. All the flying scenes were filmed in the actual airplanes as they were flying with the actors in rear seats. The flying scenes in F-14 Tomcat (That Maverick and Rooster stole) were special effects, but the actors were sitting in the actual F-14 rented from a museum - that's why they joked about "museum piece."

This actor can fly his own jet plane ;-) This movie resolves the first movie well. Black out is from positive G forces, red out is from negative G forces. The pressurized flight suit helps block this abnormal pooling of blood. Remember, a landing is a controlled crash, and any crash is good if you survive it.

They did a great job making this movie be an homage to the first one. The faces the pilots made were real because they were in actual jets being flown by real Navy pilots. There were some CGI shots sprinkled into the movie where it was too dangerous to actually show in real life maneuvers, but the shots inside the cockpit were real & the courses they flew were real courses only for military pilots. Easily one of the most realistic military jet flying experiences in movie history. The beginning secret flying project was completely fabricated as it’s grossly overstating actual manned jet speed capabilities. The fastest manned hypersonic jet reached only Mach 6.7. Unmanned hypersonic jets have reached Mach 9.64, but anything goes wrong beyond going Mach 1 while ejecting is basically death. To reach high Mach speeds you need to fly very high up where the atmosphere is thin & that causes more issues that will kill you even if you somehow survive the ejection at high Mach speeds. Still very cool how it was portrayed.

Instead of a tired story of 30 years later I'am not an old pilot I still got it... We see Maverick dealing with the adult son of Goose and his past failures. A rare sequel that is better than the original movie.

"Ice" was the Commander of the pacific fleet one of the 4 star admiral positions. It's the highest rank a US navy officer can reach at paygrade O-10 wearing 4 silver stars. I reached the officer rank of Commander during my time in the navy which is at paygrade O5 wearing silver oakleaves on my collar.

Callsigns get given to pilots usually by their fellow pilots. Its usually something embarassing or silly, people dont usually get cool callsigns like these. Bob is probably the most accurate one.
Fun fact. Ewan McGregor (obi wan in the star wars prequels) has a brother who was a pilot. He got the callsign obi-two because of that.

From my understanding "call signs" are not necessarily chosen by the pilot in a sense. Their call signs are based on the pilots personality or perhaps something that only the pilot and other people in the crew know about the pilot.
Call signs fit the pilot because of the pilot but not *by* the pilot.

The reason they were breathing like that is because in this movie all the flying scenes were very real (for the most part). All the actors and actresses were in the backseat of the F/A-18 F not only having to deal with the effects of the G forces but also having to operate the camera equipment made specifically for this movie to get the shots.
The reason why characters like "Mavrick" "Rooster" and "Hangman" do not have a NFO (Naval Flight Officer) in back is because it was made to look like they were flying in the F/A-18 E which is a single seat variant of the hornet.

@K.C-2049 A few of them were able to handle it better with time. But when you pull G's like that you're going to be breathing the way they did in the movie. Won't matter if its for a movie or if its someone who is an actual USN aviator.

Fun fact: Those black "enemy" jets are called Sukhoi Su-57. It's Russia's 5th gen fighter jet and there are somewhere between only 1-3 currently in -service- existence since they're so damn costly to build.

    • @mjc1389
      @mjc1389 Год назад

The Russians have 10 prototype SU57’s that aren’t combat certified.
They just took delivery of 4 more production models to their combat fleet. It’s believed the actual numbers are between 12-16 that are available for service now.
They will likely build around 75 by the end of their production run unless their economy goes completely in the tank over the next few years.
In Russian currency the SU57 is likely cheaper than our F22.

    • @nurderbvbabernurderbvb

Could it be a message from the USA to Russia? Because everybody said, nobody has a chance against the Su57. And the USA didnt even use their most modern aircraft, the F35 to scrap it, in fact they used a already long retired aircraft. For me, it was like: Hey russia, nice jet, but even with a jet out of the museum we send it down, so dont mess with us!"

Callsign LUCKY for US F-16 pilot HEATHER PENNY. (Lucky Penny). She was an F-16 fighter pilot the day of the 9 / 11 terrorist attack. Heather was one of two F-16 pilots who flew their unarmed planes in an attempt to ram the United Airlines Flight 93 before it reached Washington DC. Their two planes had no missiles, so this was a suicide mission. Before they could reach Flight 93 it was deliberately crashed by the passengers. After Heather retired from the US Air Force, she started competitive Jet Racing for fun. Her Dad was a fighter pilot in Vietnam. She is now a defense policy expert --- I have a RUclips video p_list of some of her interviews (named 9 11 HEATHER PENNY PILOT)

10:26 Dasha accidentally became something between "Bitchin' Betty"(the voice warning system you hear telling them to pull up in the background) and "Naggin' Nadya"(Western name for the Ri-65, which was the Russian counterpart).
17:40 "Bandit" is the proper designation for enemy aircraft. Detected aircraft that is not known whether friendly or allied is called "Bogey"(which they incorrectly used in original Top Gun in final battle... unless Bandit came in later, but I don't think that's the case).

Pro tips... Penny is the admiral's daughter from the first movie. Hangman so impressed tom as an actor and person, he told him to ho get a pilot licence...he did! Goose learned to play the piano song, for this movie. Bob, the pilot, is real life son of bill Pullman, who played a pilot and president in Independence Day! Tom has multiple licences in real life...chaueffer, motorbike, single and two prop and single jet planes, even real estate! Hangmans ego here is a combination of iceman and maverick. They spent 30 to 90 minutes a day for months, flying for this, and had to control their own equipment, cameras, mics, etc., while in the air. Many of them ended up with jet fuel and carcinogens in their blood! The general was a test pilot in the movie, The Right Stuff and flight director in Apollo 13! The plane at the end....is Toms'!!!😮😮😮 Rooster best movie will forever be Whiplash!!! Jennifer Connelly has done so many epic movies and scenes....hrr riding the quarter operated horse is a classic! But she will go down in history for the movie Labrynth!😮

Liked on the whole but 3 issues, guy with the glasses could never be a millitary pilot. 2nd the Mustang was a Army/Airforce plane, his Navy pride would have chosen a navy plane but cruise owned it and it is a 2 seater. 3rd the big one the person playing penny is too young for him to have an affair with the "admiral's daughter" in the start of TG1, this choice to be both that young and the admiral's daughter makes Mav a Pediophile with about a 6yr old in the first movie. Anyone can do the math and it doesn't work. Otherwise a great film but 3 major holes in the story.
