Legal Eagle recently made a video going over this film and said in real life, Maverick a) would not have a callsign as awesome as "Maverick" (callsigns are usually based on some embarrassing story from bootcamp) and b) would have so many charges of conduct unbecoming an officer or gentleman, reckless operation of aircraft, etc... that he would either be dishonorably discharged from the US Military or imprisoned.
Another real life Top Gun instructor said that the idea of competition is ridiculous and goes against the very idea of what training is supposed to be: learning to be a unit
The fact that any Commander, Admiral, or Lieutenant still allows Maverick to keep flying must mean they really don't give a damn about risking their careers.
"Maverick" may sound like a cool callsign, but the definition/synonyms of _maverick_ are independent, nonconformist, unorthodox, etc. The types of things the military frowns on. So Maverick earned his callsign by being a loose cannon - something you don't want in a fighter pilot. He's called Maverick because he's everything they don't want him to be.
When I was in the military, I used to load weapons on planes. We were at Red Flag an air combat exercise and the plane I worked on was really old but was more known for getting shot down every combat sortie. This combat exercise takes place in Las Vegas so that's one big reason why everyone likes going. Well, I get off work loading weapons and I get back to the hotel, I am in the elevator and a bunch of the pilots that flew the planes I worked on got in and started talking about getting a kill. I said congrats on your kill I work on your planes, one of them smiled, stuck his hand in the air and gave me a high five.... then said, yeah, he pretty much flew right in front of me... we all busted up laughing. It was fun because the pilots are high on everything when in the air and it's hard for them to come back down to reality after a combat exercise so, them been cool with me was very rare for pilots. For the rest of the few weeks in the combat exercise they find me each day on the flightline loading weapons and always came over to say hi, I would say "Good hunting", they loved it, lots of fun that deployment.
Cougar was panicked because he did not know the intentions of the enemy fighter. They had missile lock on him. He realized if that fighter had shot, his wife and daughter would have lost him.
How is your morality not the very first thing you take into consideration when thinking about becoming a fighter pilot? Just seems strange that it would suddenly dawn on him all at once.
@@ckobo84 1. I think you might have meant mortality. 2. The film took place in 1986 and Cougar was young -- probably even too young to have fought and flown in Vietnam, which was over in 1975. This was most likely his first actual combat situation, and that can really open your eyes to how quickly death can come for you out there. It's probable (of course), that his nerves would have settled with time and he would have been fine, but he chose not to roll those dice.
@@brentage5000 Not to mention how much is riding on it. They are staking their lives on something that could potential start a global conflict. He was at the mercy of a wildcard bandit with a gun to his head.
@@ckobo84 Because you can talk a good game about how you'd handle yourself under fire, but until you actually find yourself in that situation for real you simply don't know how you'll be able to handle it.
"I got a weird flirty vibe ..." this movie is one of the most unintentionally (officially) homoerotic movies in the history of cinema. I blame the cocaine
Maverick losing Goose is similar to Luke losing his best friend Biggs in the first Star Wars - you have to (learn to) focus on what’s at stake, and mourn later.
Funny story... when I was a kid my mom took me to see Top Gun in the theater, and I was loudly singing along to "danger zone" at the beginning of the movie, and then suddenly the movie stop playing, and everyone in the theater could hear my terrible singing before I realized what had happened! It was so embarrassing! Lol
The reason Cougar is freaking out is that encounter caused him to have a panic attack. They are fucking terrible and suck ass. I know because I've had one before and can confirm.
If you are wondering why Cougar freaked out so bad. The sound of being locked on is the equivalent of having a loader fun held to your face. You are as good as dead if they fire and some people don't bounce back right away. You nailed an issue with this movie that no one really talks about, that being the accident that caused Goose's death was more Iceman fault than anyone if you think about it. Here you have a guy that is always going off about the rules and is known to be cool and calculating but it was his frustration and completive nature that triggered the accident. I mean everyone was telling him to "get out of there" but he wanted to win so bad he was acting like Maverick. Once he realized that he couldn't get the shot he pulled off in anger. At his level of skill and knowledge he should have been aware of the danger his jet wash could create but he made a mistake out of arrogance. Sure Maverick needed the wake up call and he should feel guilty so it was good for the story but I feel that this was a lost opportunity for Iceman character growth. I love this movie.
If you're going to be a fighter pilot you should already be comfortable with the idea of dying. How did it suddenly surprise him that he could be killed?
In the intro that is not smoke. The catapults are powered by steam and that is the steam escaping from the piston you see. The new Ford class carrier uses a magnetic launch system.
Popular misconception that pilots need great eyesight. Yes there is a minimum but, if you wear contacts they count for corrected vision. Not without. In theory you can have terrible eyesight but if you can pass the test with correction you are good to go.
Maverick didn't perform the risky move he got criticized for during the final fights. That move was a Split-S. What Maverick did at the end was apply the airbrakes, which incidentally would not cause the F-14 to pitch up in that manner.
You were smart to watch this first. Perfect way to do it. 👍🏻 It’s weird how many people interpret the guys little stand offs as flirty. I don’t think we saw it like that back then. People were not as violent in the 80’s and more capable of controlling emotions. ESPECIALLY guys like these. It’s not about beating each other up or making threats it was kinda like intimidation just through presence. It was about who was gonna flinch or blink or back away being uncomfortable nearly nose to nose. Now it’s flaring nostrils, puffed up chests and talking louder than the other guy. You don’t even have to make sense, just drown them out. It used to be about having nerves of steel…. Now it’s seeing what you can steal to get on someone’s nerves.
Goose's death was based on a handful of real events on the original F-14A. To save money on manufacturing costs, the F-14 used engines were taken from an earlier fighter jet that had never been intended for dogfights, and so the fatal flaw of interrupted airflow causing a compressor stall, leading to the flameout, was only discovered after it started causing crashed. The biggest problem was the flat spin the F-14s found themselves in would lead to an area of low pressure just above the plane, meaning the canopy never separated in the way intended, and the ejecting pilots could smash into them. It claimed a few lives before they re-wrote the manual on how to deal with the flameouts.
The TF30 engines were designed for the F-111B which was a multi role fighter bomber. In the 1960s, US Defense Secretary Robert McNamara forced the Navy to participate in the USAF’s TFX (Tactical Fighter Experimental) competition to reduce development costs. This would be General Dynamics F-111 which was was terrible for carriers and the F-11B was dropped for the Gruman F-14 in 1968. Pratt and Whitney which had the engine contract already had the TF30 engines but yes they were not designed for some of the high intense angles a fighter jet performed but they did have power. The Navy had insisted on its own fighter jet so the F-14 would be developed with the TF30 engines. No sooner did the first first F-14 took off in 1970 the Navy asked for an upgrade. This would be the F-14B but the Pratt Whitney engine F-100 failed its tests so any chance of upgrading the exiting F-14s or a new F-14B was put on hold in 1974. It was not till 1979 when General Electrics designed the new F-101 for the B-1 which was later canceled. In 1984 with some changes General Electrics wins the contract for the new engine upgrade the F-110 Engine. The new F-14Ds and upgrades to the F-14 fleet would not begin till then 1987. So had Maverick and Goose flew a little later Goose would still be alive. Your right in an attempt to reduce costs they went with the TF30 engines it was not to reduce manufacturing but development costs. The navy by 1970s was already looking to upgrade. When the F-14 was in development the only engine was the TF30. No others were ready yet and Pratt's & Whitney new engine failed which is what the Navy wanted to upgrade to. So it was either no F-14 or the F-14 they got in the 1970s.
I can relate to "Couger" not because of being locked on to a radar guided missile (which is the only time you would get that alarm Heat seeker you have to look for the trail as it comes off the enemy fighter) but due to a bad Carrier landing. I came in way to low and came a second away from killing not only myself but several other crewmembers on the flight deck. Like you saw with "Mavrick" I had to go back around a few times take a few deep breaths get myself under control and land on the deck. I did not quit from flight status because of it.
This movie is incredible, and the 2nd one was just amazing. It was good enough to make my step mom (in her 60s), my real mom in her 70sn and my dad in his mid-70s brave the crowds at the cinema to go see it in person. I treated them as none of them had ever seen a movie on an IMAX screen before and they are still talking about to this day..... and we saw the movie the weekend after Memorial Day. It's phenomenal, and goes to show you that when there are good characters, people buy into the story, actors enjoy working together and buy into the "process", it doesn't have to be 4 trillion dollars worth of CGI to make a blockbuster. Both films are amazing and I coukd very easily with either of them o er and over. Thus is a Hollywood blockbuster done right, so the formula is out there..... and it didn't involve superheroes to get it to $1 billion+.
A lot of the awesomness of this film are down to the late, great Tony Scott (RIP) who directed it. His other films are also worth checking out, especially the phenomenal Man on Fire. And for extra points, the Quentin Tarantino/Tony Scott masterpiece that is True Romance :D
Definiately watch Top Gun Maverick in cinema. I did, and my only regret is I didn't watch it in a bigger room, like in Imax. The last third of it was pretty amazing visually, and edge of the seat.
The guy "Charlie" was meeting in the O club that is actually the pilot that inspired the character of "Viper" in this movie. He also had that Call sign while he flew fighters during Vietnam.
Funny thing is, the F-14 with the right loadout was capable of independently targeting and engaging 6 targets simultaneously. The Migs in this film were fictitious, but even the best the Soviets had at the time couldn't compete with that. This would've never been a fight irl.
I used to be one of those guys on the flight deck in a green shirt. In my case, USS Nimitz. I operated the equipment that the wires are attached to that actually stop the aircraft when they land. Fighter pilots are the cockiest bastards you will ever meet. They're not necessarily jerks, but there's no question about their self confidence. You HAVE to have that attitude to do the job they do. They were always cool with us tho. Probably because we operated the equipment that ensures they can land safely.
This is an awesome movie. You should check out other Tom Cruise movies like The Outsiders, A Few Good Men and other Val Kilmer’s movies like Tombstone and Real Genus, The Doors which is about the true story of Jim Morison the lead singer of the Classic Rock n Roll band The Doors. Too bad Val Kilmer doesn’t act anymore though he got Throat Cancer and was forced to retire from acting. He is mentioned in the new Top Gun movie. Miles Teller plays Goose’s son in the movie. Jennifer Connelly plays Tom Cruise’s new love interest. Her character is the “Admiral’s daughter” that was mentioned in the throw away line.
You are to young, but when this movie was released. The Cold War was in full affect. U.S./N.A.T.O vs U.S.S.R/Warsaw Pact. U.S. fighter jets mixing it up with Soviet fighter jets. Didn't happen very often, and when they did. There was always the risk of escalating force on each side. Which could have resulted into a real shooting war. The type of war that turns the surface of the earth into glass.
I still prefer this one to Maverick, although it's close. I think it might be Tony Scott directing and the cinematography, there's such a gritty feel to this movie despite some of the cheese. Maverick is really well made but feels too 'clean' and the ending feels a bit off, like it was being reverential instead of realistic.
Fun fact: since you are a fan of Star Wars the clone wars did you know that there was a script written for an unmade episode that was going to revolve around captain Rex and the clone pilots. It was inspired by top gun.
Well, there are tons of absurdities in it. From the comments I've seen from combat aviators, they see this one as similar to the new one; silly as hell, but an entertaining movie.
1. An old shipmate of mine was on the Enterprise when they filmed this. 2. Gooses death was not Maverick's fault. Iceman was bogarting his LOS approach and they got caught in the jet wash. 3. I spent 24 years in the US Navy. 6 on "bird farms" (Carriers). I have seen 1000+ launches and landings without a single crash. These men and the men working the flat tops are doing the most dangerous job in the world (for the good guys). Shout out😎 4. Kelly McGillis/Charlie was in a great movie with Harrison Ford "Witness" that's seriously worth a first time/share HINT HINT 5. Tom Skerritt/Viper not only played Dallas in "Alien" he also played Strawberry in "Up in Smoke" with Cheech and Chong. 6. Val Kilmer/Iceman has a long list of movies including but not limited to: "Willow", "The Doors" and "Tombstone" 7. The Goose was the RIO (Radar Intercept Officer) radar, communications and navigation. 8. Onboard the ship the Squadron leader would not be smoking a cigar in that operation space. 9. Meg Ryan is my honey. A great overlooked movie with her is with Tom Hanks called "Joe vs the Volcano' She plays 3 parts. HINT HINT 10. Onboard the ship/aircraft all the perspiration is Hollywood(not the pilot). There is AC onboard. 11. The TOP GUN school is no longer located at Miramar near San Diego. It's now at NAS Fallon, NV. 12. In 1991 I was stationed on the USS INDEPENDENCE (CV-62) and they made a movie onboard called "Flight of the Intruder". It was seriously cool. Brad Johnson(RIP), Willem DeFoe and Danny Glover. I'm actually in it for a very brief period of time. HINT HINT. You will be the first. 13. Watching/sharing the new "Top Gun Maverick" is a must. The ariel work in that movie makes this one seem like they were practicing. The best part is that it has a plot.👌
Alyska, Cougar's reaction after being lock on, its equivalent at flying, being lock on its like having someone pointing a gun right on your forehead... that gave him ptsd
With regards to Cougar freaking out. This movie takes place during the "Cold war", the tense rivalry between USA and Soviet Union. Every little conflict could lead to a nuclear war that would kill a majority of humanity. So the scuffle with the Soviet Mig spooked Cougar, maybe it was too much pressure for one man to take, to be responsible for the possible death of most of humanity
Hers are a few of the classics u need to watch. Braveheart, good will hunting, Forrest Gump, Shawshank redemption, saving private Ryan, inglorious basterds, the green mile.
At the start they didn't shoot, But they did have the equivalent of a loaded gun pointed at them, Don't know about you, but that would cause a lot of people to freak out a bit.. Lol..
you have to understand the ethos of being a fighter pilot - in WWI the average pilot survived 11 days - in the Battle of Britain it was four weeks - after graduating from a class of 32 in my day- within five years three were killed - it was dangerous and is still dangerous

Both, actually. I saw that video. It's harsh. ;)
Fun fact I visited that bar in SD. It has nothing but bras hanging from the ceiling from like 30 years ago to present.
"I got a weird flirty vibe ..."
this movie is one of the most unintentionally (officially) homoerotic movies in the history of cinema.
I blame the cocaine
"Maverick: Lizard Boy" LMAO
Merlin is Tim Robbins. Shows up in a couple more Tom films.the Admirals daughter, is in 2! Ice is in 2!
After this you’ve gotta see the newest one. Totally worth 30 years of waiting. You also gotta continue with the back to the future trilogy.
Dang .... I've watched Topgun like, 100 times, and Goose NEVER died until you predicted it!
I hope you're happy, Young Missy! 🤪
Maverick losing Goose is similar to Luke losing his best friend Biggs in the first Star Wars - you have to (learn to) focus on what’s at stake, and mourn later.
Top Gun: Maverick was a banger!! Tom Cruise literally made the latest movie!!
Lol
Seeing Andy Dufresne from Shawshank Redemption at the end there gets me all the time
The reason Cougar is freaking out is that encounter caused him to have a panic attack.
Cougar couldn’t fly at the start because he came so close to death and could only think about his family he almost left behind
Panic attack.
If you're going to be a fighter pilot you should already be comfortable with the idea of dying. How did it suddenly surprise him that he could be killed?
The actress that plays Charlie is Kelly McGillis. She was a good actress she is retired now from acting.
Flight of the Intruder is every bit as fun as Top Gun, but completely different. You will enjoy it.
My favorite Navy movie of all, the book is awesome as well
In the intro that is not smoke.
I _think_ he pulled up deliberately. Not sure.
You were smart to watch this first. Perfect way to do it. 👍🏻
It’s weird how many people interpret the guys little stand offs as flirty.
So it was either no F-14 or the F-14 they got in the 1970s.
second one makes first movie look like a walk in the park
Go see Top Gun Maverick. Actors flew in F-18 jets, they paid $11,000/ hour to “rent” these planes from the Navy.
TOP GUN: LIZARD BOY in theatres now : )
When the enemy got missile lock on cougar scared him he thought he was going to die and he has a family so he resigned
That is still the saddest scene in top gun, goose's death
funny thing there is no top gun trophy. i think in the commentary they said if there was one there would be more deaths at top gun
The reason films like this are somewhat "predictable" is mainly because the plot has been copied many time over the years.
Taking it back to the 80s. I like it
I'm guessing Alyce has never seen Batman Forever since Val Kilmer (who plays Iceman) played Batman in that movie
This was actually a hilarious reaction video lol 😆 🤣 thanks for that
Well Alyska, looks like you’ve entered the DANGER ZONE!
Archer. Lol.
I guess she is young, but to refer to Top Gun as an old movie, I want her to react to some old b&w classic movie… hahaha…
In the real TOP GUN there is no trophy. It's not a sport, it's a military flight school.
Yes, would like a Topgun Maverick reaction!
“Oh thank God we didn’t have to see them go 🦎🦎🦎 in their mouth again” is my favorite reaction from this reaction video 😂😂😂
I really appreciate they respectively give us a nod to the late Tony Scott during the sequel's end credits. RIP mi amigo.
Of course you enjoyed it, ITS TOP GUN!
Definiately watch Top Gun Maverick in cinema. I did, and my only regret is I didn't watch it in a bigger room, like in Imax. The last third of it was pretty amazing visually, and edge of the seat.
I saw it for the first time this year too, and really enjoyed it! The sequel is MUCH better tho!
If you want to see the movie that proved Tom Cruise could actually act you need to watch 1988's 'Rain Man'.
totally Agree
Yeah thats a great Cruise film. Also The Color of Money.
The guy "Charlie" was meeting in the O club that is actually the pilot that inspired the character of "Viper" in this movie. He also had that Call sign while he flew fighters during Vietnam.
Alyska, fun fact: Iceman played Batman once. 🦇
Funny thing is, the F-14 with the right loadout was capable of independently targeting and engaging 6 targets simultaneously. The Migs in this film were fictitious, but even the best the Soviets had at the time couldn't compete with that. This would've never been a fight irl.
*Kelly McGill's, Tom Cruise's* love interest is actually a *Lesbian* in real life
I used to be one of those guys on the flight deck in a green shirt.
You definitely need to react to Top Gun Maverick!💯
Let me second everyone: go see Top Gun: Maverick. I was really surprised at how good it is and it's at least 100x better than the original.
nope, it's only 95% as good as the original !
Great movie, Maverick is even better which is rare for a sequel
Of course we want you to react....to everything!!!
One of the best movies ever made.
Should definitely watch the sequel, its amazing, and it has Iceman too. Already watched it twice, planning to watch it a 3rd time.
Top Gun is 80's cringe/cheese at it's best. Great reaction!!!!
Top Gun Maverick is a great movie, you need to react to it!
I agree
Fun fact: since you are a fan of Star Wars the clone wars did you know that there was a script written for an unmade episode that was going to revolve around captain Rex and the clone pilots. It was inspired by top gun.
My dad actually worked on the jet in this film, the f14 tomcat. I can't watch it with him, he nitpicks the film to death.
Well, there are tons of absurdities in it. From the comments I've seen from combat aviators, they see this one as similar to the new one; silly as hell, but an entertaining movie.
Mate, you should try watching Jurassic Park with a room full of Palaeontologists like I did. 😂
Shout out😎
4. Kelly McGillis/Charlie was in a great movie with Harrison Ford "Witness" that's seriously worth a first time/share HINT HINT
5. Tom Skerritt/Viper not only played Dallas in "Alien" he also played Strawberry in "Up in Smoke" with Cheech and Chong.
6. Val Kilmer/Iceman has a long list of movies including but not limited to: "Willow", "The Doors" and "Tombstone"
HINT HINT
Quentin Tarantino described this as “one man’s struggle with his homosexuality “
Alyska, you may remember Viper from the first Alien movie.
You would LOVE Maverick in a movie theatre. Story is MUCH better and the photography is just out of this world.
The high five is mandatory, it's to check if you and your partner are both alive
Hers are a few of the classics u need to watch. Braveheart, good will hunting, Forrest Gump, Shawshank redemption, saving private Ryan, inglorious basterds, the green mile.
When I watched this as a kid it was just the best. Yet when I watched it as an adult I did notice something strange about maverick.
Top Gun Maverick IS amazing. Recommand
As one of my favourite top movie reactors to watch. I just love it....
Your such a delight to listen to and watch on these reactions.
This movie was no different....Some of your comments were so farkin funny, i thoroughly enoyed
watching this with you....
The captain at the beginning is the one who played the principal in Back to the Future
13:35 You gots to trust Tom Skerritt! And especially his moustache.
Alright, you're the Stars Wars goddess that critiqued their films, I love your input. This one is easy.
