Val Kilmer had two tracheotomies and lost his voice in real life due to throat cancer, so it was interesting seeing how they incorporated his condition into the story. When Iceman speaks, that's Val talking, but with some digital alterations to increase the clarity, as he usually has to use a digital voice box to communicate. Tom Cruise reportedly refused to film the sequel unless they managed to fit Val in somehow.

    • @KS-xk2so
      @KS-xk2so 2 года назад +62

I heard part of the digital building of his voice included having Val's son record the audio as well, which is pretty neat. Truly wild what can be done these days. So glad they included Val in the film. Wouldn't have felt right without him.

Kilmer lost his voice, he can't speak and there was no "digital alteration". They recreated his voice using A.I. Sonantic, the company that did and that had alreadh worked with Val Kilmer before, put hours of Kilmer’s archival recordings through an A.I. to generate a voice model that is a vocal clone of the actor.

I love that, not just for the Easter egg, but because it makes her seem like the love of Maverick's life. Which is cool. I mean he's lost Goose, he loses Ice, but he reconnected with Penny and Amelia. It's a glimpse of a life beyond the Navy, which is something Mav's never really had before. And I ADORE that she's the only one who calls him "Pete." Everyone else calls him "Maverick" or "Mav," which shows that she and Pete have a special relationship. Everyone else knows the legend; she knows the man.

Alyska, that scene made it into your reaction to the original. As a die-hard Top Gun fan (since it first came out), I didn't hesitate to say this was a far superior movie to the original in so many ways. The plot, whilst still fairly simplistic, was far more nuanced than the original, the characters were fleshed out better (and it wasn't just a 3 man show like lsat time) and , honestly, as groundbreaking as they were at the time, the aerial sequences are better too. Bravo Tom. This plus the last Mission Impossible movie coming out soon feels like Cruise might be trying to bow out on a high.

    • @locutus9956

Completely agree, I ADORE the original movie but this is just (and I hesitate to say it) damn near perfect. Its not overly complciated in storyline, the characters are mostly kinda cliche and it doesnt really do anything hugely surpriseing and yet... its so so much more than the sum of its parts and sooooo much better than it really has ANY right to be. Its just pure unadulterated entertainment and I cannot remember walking out of the cinema with a bigger grin on my face than I did after watching this (the first of many times!). Its just a masterclass in how to just make a damn fun movie! All too often folks lose track of that trying to create art in their films and forget that first and foremost a movie is meant to be entertainment. It aint gonna win any oscars but I have yet to meet ANYONE who has seen it who didnt absolutely love it, even in cases of folks I know who dont really like the original.

What I love about this is Hangman's character arc. He started off as a complete douchebag but over the course of the film he was humbled. He wasnt picked as part of the first team on the final mission but he took it on the chin and ended up being the one who saves the day. He still retained his cockiness but he had a newfound humility to temper that.

    • @osmanyousif7849
      @osmanyousif7849 2 года назад +1

Eh, if I was to be a bit picky, I kind of wish we got to see a scene with how Hangman goes after them. Like maybe have him still be on the carrier while he’s listening to what’s happening to Maverick and Rooster. Hangman begins to think about what Maverick told everyone about "Never leaving your wingman." or "Don't think, just do.", and so decides to go after them. But Vice Admiral Simpson and Bates order him to stand down and that there’s nothing they could do. To which Hangman on intercoms says something like, “Seriously?” or “F*** off.”. The Vice Admirals order him him 2 - 4 more times to stand down or they will relieve Hangman of duty. To which the other Top Gun grads then get in the 2 men’s way, giving a look that says, "You relieve Hangman, you relieve all of us.". Things are about to get confrontational, until they get a call that the F-14 Tomcat with Maverick and Rooster are coming back, to which Simpson and Bates agree to send Hangman to make sure the two get back safety. Now that I think would be a perfect balance of conflict, while also giving the team a moment to show that they stand with one another, even improving Hangman's arc.

Even though it has been released to streaming services, it’s still on in cinema, if you get a chance, go see it where it was meant to be viewed… the big screen… and IMAX is THE best way to view it.
“At least he didn’t die” - he’s indestructible. Ejecting at Mach 10.4 would literally turn the human body to mush, he should be a visceral cloud of pink mist.
“I guarantee he’s gonna end up flying it”. Calling it again? You’re good, you’re very good, in fact, you are too good to be true.
The bar scene with Rooster playing Great Balls Of Fire, Miles Teller learned the song and this is a live take, the cast and extras all joined in. It was so good that this version was added to the OST, and a music video is available too.
Maverick really hits it home how much he wants them all to survive this almost suicide mission: “your job is to teach them how to work as a team, and how to strike the target.”
“And how to come home… and how to come home, sir.”
“Every mission has its risks, these pilots accept that.”
    “I don’t, sir.”
And debriefing the failed practice runs:
“Is there a reason you didn’t communicate with your team?”
    “I was focusing on..”
“One that their family will accept at the funeral?”
    “None, sir.”
“Why didn’t you anticipate the turn?”
    “I..”
“Don’t tell me, tell it to his family.” 😬
“It’s not the plane, it’s the pilot.”
    “Exactly!”
    “And he’s saying you’re shit.” 😂 yep.
“What’s come back?” Throat cancer. Val Kilmer had throat cancer, and part of his treatment for it was a tracheotomy (part of his trachea removed), so he can’t speak anymore. They incorporated that into the film.
When Mav climbs down from Penny’s window and Amelia catches him… she had to already know he was there, his bike is parked outside the front door, she would’ve seen it when she came home.
“Is there no one else in the back?” Coyote flies the single seat E model of the F-18, same as Maverick, Rooster and Hangman, while Phoenix/Bob and Payback/Fanboy fly the dual seat F model. So Coyote is it that cockpit on his own.
This scene kicks off an absolute emotional rollercoaster of events… tension for Coyote‘s blackout, relief as he recovers, more tension for the birdstrike and Phoenix and Bob having to eject, relief when we hear they are ok, even more tension as Mav and Rooster argue, followed by sadness as we learn Ice has passed away… and breathe.
The entire F-14 escape sequence is my favourite part, from when they have both just been shot down, their little “I saved your life”, “I saved YOUR life” interaction, starting up the old girl, “wave and smile”, “don’t think, just do”, and the ensuing dogfight… damn good cinema!
30:47 “what the...”, “…fuck was that?” THAT EDITING THOUGH!!!!
“Do you think Hangman’s gonna save them?” How do you do this? Are you secretly the script writer? 😂
“Thank you for saving my life.”
    “It’s what my dad would’ve done.” 🥲
    Top Gun: Maverick trivia:
Miles Teller revealed that during the flight training, only three of the cast who were taken up in the jets, including himself, didn’t throw up. Anthony Edwards, who played Goose in Top Gun, was the only cast member who didn’t throw up during training for the original… like father, like son.
There is a disclaimer at the end of the credits that says “no animals were harmed in the making of this film”, referring to the birdstrike scene 😂
The opening scene was filmed as an homage to original Top Gun director Tony Scott, who sadly took his own life in 2012.
Lady Gaga worked with Hans Zimmer on the score for this film, writing her own song Hold My Hand. Harold Faltermeyer is also credited for the score as his work on the original was incorporated into this one.
As I did on your Top Gun reaction, here are the real world violations committed in this film:
    1. Riding a motorcycle on an airfield.
    2. Riding a motorcycle without a helmet.
    3. Disobeying a direct order from an admiral, and doing so in a disrespectful and mocking manner.
    4. Riding a motorcycle alongside a runway (and without a helmet, again!).
    5. Extremely dangerous high speed pass between two other aircraft flying formation.
    6. Twice!
    7. Flying inverted in close proximity to another aircraft.
    8. Breaking the “hard deck” (some things never change).
    9. Dangerous manoeuvres during training.
    10. Sailing (technically) a boat without a license. I’m not sure even with Penny there to guide him that he’s allowed to take control of it.
    11. Stealing a multi-million dollar military aircraft (even though it has his name on it).
    12. Twice!
    13. High speed fly-by over two admirals.
More violations than the first one, and Maverick is supposed to be more mature in this one 😂

Is there actually any evidence that this ever personally bothered him in his movies? I suspect most of it is the studio wanting him to be taller, as it conveys a greater sence of "power", especially when playing action heroes, as he often does.

    • @WTDProductions
      @WTDProductions 2 года назад +1

@@Mubiki I personally don’t know (maybe someone else knows) but I’d assume it’s both. Certainly once he started producing his own movies and had a lot more control you’d imagine he had a lot of input into his image. Usually the ego and image grows with the more image control actors get, like The Rock, Jason Statham, and Vin Diesel having it in their contracts that they can’t lose fights or get punched a certain number of times. So idk how much control he had in the past, but knowing he had control here the choice is still refreshing

Alyska, hey! I've been following your channel since your Red Dead 2 vids, great stuff, mate! Here is a thought to perhaps keep in mind for Mav not disclosing Rooster's mother's wishes: Those two go back quite a while since Rooster was a child. So, for my assessment, there might be a tipping scale of loyalty here. Not saying it's the right decision, but certainly, Mav chose a path that got him significant heat with Rooster. As an American, I may have lost the plot completely. I can be be quite thick sometimes lol

Also, and perhaps not coincidentally, both of those songs were massive hits when I was in junior high. 🤘🎶

I just finished watching it and I freaking loved it. I was three when the first movie came out. It was still being played in my household when I was six. I remember on the weekends late at night re-enacting the dog fights during the movie with models I made. This movie is so much better because it brings back a lot of the original things and people from the original. It’s a great flashback. When I saw they were going to steal a Tomcat… I flipped my s**t!!!! That has been my favorite fighter jet since I saw the original. Every time I go to any aircraft museum or the USS Midway in San Diego I spend the most time at the Tomcat. I really didn’t think this movie was going to be as good as it is. They had me thinking Maverick was going to die sooooo many times. I am glad he didn’t though but would understand if he did.

That is how you land when you eject from an aircraft in order not to completely wreck your knees and everything connected to them. That is exactly how a fighter pilot would Jump from a second storey window. I thought that was remarkable realism- Incredible piece of detail.
