This is such an amazing sequel. I hope Hollywood was paying attention to the thought that went into this film.

I think the people who made this film were paying attention to the MANY amazing sequels to 80´s movies that came out BEFORE Maverick (like Blade Runner 2049 or Doctor Sleep, to name just a couple).

Nah Hollywood is focused on "Controlling the Culture" than making great movies, with great storytelling, and full of shortcuts via excessive CGI.

A country that doesn't exist initiates a war on American for some reason. The fighter jets are not equipped properly. The surface to air missiles have no guidance tower. The attack formations and most terminology were absolutely wrong. It is as stupid as the first one.

One of the best legacy films to have ever been made. 13 times in the theaters between IMAX, Dolby Cinema, Digital (and even MX4D). That's how I felt about this film...one I never could have dreamed of in 1986 when I saw the blockbuster original in theaters as a teen.
Well done on the reaction. You truly got this film.

"Don't get fooled again" was THE perfect piece of music for the dogfight training scenes. So glad you recognised it and have seen them live. The romance in this film felt so much better than the one in Top Gun. In that film it felt like he was just chasing after a trophy. In this one it really feels like two kindred spirits who have a long and complicated past together, and you can see exactly why Mav likes Penny and why they'd have such great chemistry and mutual respect. They're both free spirits with a love for adventure

Pilot callsigns are usually given out by a pilot's squadron-mates, and they usually base it on something that the pilot might find embarrassing. Very few actual cool callsigns like Maverick out there. Goose would be realistic if it was based on him being chased by a goose or something.

Joe "Hoser" Satrapa got his after he emptied his Crusader's guns on a ground target and missed with all of them.
There was a female pilot with the callsign "Stacks", yes she was, another was called "Slick" cause her landings during her 14 RAG were not "slick" and was just one bad landing from being kicked out, she recovered and later picked up a less embarrassing callsign "Vargas" and did a combat tour with the F-14 over Iraq before transitioning to F/A-18's

I saw an interview of Tom Cruise talking about his F-14 training prior to the original Top Gun. His pilot’s call sign was “Bozo.” When TC’s head was down between his knees, his pilot pulled up hard, which forced TC’s head lower. He tried to get the pilot to let up but wasn’t heard. When he finally let up, TC said, “why did you do that? Couldn’t you see I was bent over?” And his pilot replied, “Now you know why they call me Bozo.”

In the Navy it's normally one of 3 ways. Last name of the officer, the officer's personality traits or most commonly an embarrassing situation that happens to them. Every now and then it can also come from a hometown too. A wingman of mine who actually was a TOPGUN graduate is still stuck with the callsign "Punchout" due to a seat malfunction that blew her out of her aircraft. I got lucky and mine came both from my last name and my attitude when it came to enemies. I tended to "Hammer" in the idea it was a huge mistake screwing with the US or allies.

The same holds true for the Air Force. For my son, his call sign is a nod to his home state and also to an embarrassing incident that happened on an early mission. It started as a way for fellow squadron pilots to tease him about what happened and stuck as his call sign.

The rapid cutting from cockpit to cockpit and hearing "Dagger 1 Defending, Dagger 2 Defending, Its on your six Dagger 1, I see it, smoke in the air.." followed by the wide shot of missles zipping across the screen and every fighter doing their own defense is so good.

Usu. The call signs are awarded by the squadron. Most often by the other more senior members. I've heard of the enlisted also being asked to come up with one, usu the aircraft crew since they have the most contact with the pilot.

The way (in the real Navy/Air Force) pilots get their callsigns is a little complicated. Sometimes, it's because of a personality trait, like 'Goofy', or 'Nap-Time' if they're always sleepy; or a play on their name, like 'Soup' Campbell, 'Flash' Gordon; or 'Bob' (realistic) because they 'look' like a 'Bob'; but sometimes it can be because of a story, usually embarrassing. The rare awesome callsigns are treasured, Kim 'Killer Chick' Campbell (decorated A-10 pilot).

When i was a kid (80's) there was a big thing about Muammar Gaddafi's compound being bombed by the US. We missed him but got a few of his family members including a daughter. I am only like 70 percent sure that is correct because i barely care now and didn't at all then. What stuck in my brain was that the pilots that dropped the bombs got no medals or recognition showing their involvement for fear that a terrorist would do what they could for retribution. So when you ask if these missions ever really happen i am sure they do. IRL these missions would be done with drones.

I know this comment is very late, but I just learned this from an ex-pilot: the movie is so well-researched that at the climax, there's an accurate real-life reason why Rooster's ejection seat won't work: the F-14 had a safety feature that required the pilots to manually arm the ejection seat every time they got in, but Rooster was never trained on the F-14 so he wouldn't have known that.

5:02 "Don't know what that means, buy yaayyy!!"
Not sure if someone else in the comments mentioned this already, but a 'Mach number' is the speed ratio relative to the speed of sound, so "Mach 1.0" is when you would hit/break the sound barrier [and get the fabled 'sonic boom' that shatters windows]. Most commercial jets fly well below this, between Mach 0.6 and Mach 0.9. "Mach 10" is ten times the speed of sound. So yeah, pretty fast.
    36:07 Aaaaahhh, a southpaw...

I loved the original, but this one is just so much better. I completely agree that the whole scene with Maverick and Penny at her house was tastefully done. Top Gun Maverick is superior in every way to the original. The only logical reason why one would rate the first one higher than its successor is because of the way one "remembers" the first time they saw the original Top Gun. Imax cameras have never captured such reactions of actors flying on F-18's. The reason why it's so effective is because of the "state transfer" from the actors onto the audiences; the audiences can almost feel what the pilots feel as they're experiencing real G-forces-again this has never been done before, let alone so masterfully.

The song "You're Right Where You Belong/Give Em Hell" is a masterpiece. The music is somber, and you can feel the steady uneasy nervousness rise in your throat as it contiunes and we see every member of the team for what could be the last time.
But as the song changes from "You're right where you belong" to "Give em Hell" it simulates the adrenaline kicking in. The change from fear of doing to fear of failing and you realize something.
There isn't any time to contemplate the fact you might not make it home. You think too much up there, and you're dead.

THIS! Absolutely this! My fafther and I watched the original Top Gun when I was a kid. We both loved the movie so much and for myself, it started my love for aviation, Jets and Helicopters. It was one of my favorite movies of all times. I knew there were talks about a sequel, mostly being "The next Top Gun will be about drone fights" and it felt like a huge letdown. I swear, as a kid, I listened to the original Soundtrack on cassette all day long and when I sat in cinema a while ago, the trailers came and I just heard that "gong" at the beginning of the main title, I jumped out my seat and yelled "The new Top Gun!". I was about to take my dad to the cinema (I'm 41 now), but sadly, he died half a year before Top Gun Mavaerick released in cinemas. I just wish he could have seen this film, because I know he'd have loved it as much as I do. So... the story between Maverick, Goose and Rooster means even more to me. I am so happy that there have been sooooo many people who saw the movie and were impressed. This is a true masterpiece of movie entertaninment to me.

If I were the script writer or director, I'm changing the film in only one way. When Mav is told "Just don't break her heart again" , my cut would have Maverick walk right back into the home run upstairs to Penny, showing Maverick grinning from ear to ear heading up the stairs, and then rack focusing back to Amelia, also grinning, and cutting to Penny with at first a confused look, and then a smile. No dialog, maybe a sustained orchestral chord, 5 seconds top. In this way, two tensions are set up. 1) Mav being grounded is assured to affect Penny, and 2) Maverick flying the mission is also a greater fear and risk for Penny.

Val Kilmer had a surgery in 2014 forever altered Kilmer's natural voice. Defining Mach numbers:
Mach 1 is the speed of sound, which anything over said number is “supersonic” (sonic meaning sound waves), just as the a day tech noted that Roster’s ESAT was supersonic. Mach 2 is twice the speed of sound, and so on. Mach 5 is considered “hypersonic”, and Mach 10 is “Ultrasonic.” The SR-71 Blackbird officially went over Mach 3, and is the fastest plane that can take off and land in unassisted. The X-15, which launched from a drop plane, in 1967 went Mach 6.7 with Pete Knight. This is the fastest anyone has traveled in atmosphere in a plane.
Since a mock number is defined by the speed of sound, the actual ground speed changes, depending on altitude, air density, temperature, humidity, etc. So the SSC Thrust land speed record holder, actually went faster than Chuck Yeager in the X-1, simply because sound travels faster at sea level than it does at high altitude.

Super late, but pilots get there call signs, typically, from just random stuff. The way someone gets a nickname, that's basically how it goes

It means he got the plane to go 10 times the speed of sound or something over 7000 miles per hour. There is some skepticism being expressed as to whether he could have ejected at that speed without important appendages (like his head) being errr damaged.

The whole cockpit would detach (escape crew capsule) like the F-111, or the B1-A. The feature was not carried over for the B1-B because it is considerably slower than the "A" model.

I’m not sure if anyone else mentioned this in the comments, but to explain the term “Mach”, it’s a measure of speed. It also corresponds with the speed of sound, which is 767.3 miles per hour. Therefore, Mach 1 = 767.3 mph and then obviously Mach 10 = 7673 mph. ✌🏼😎

As for "Call Signs", most all pilots get their call signs bestowed onto them by their first flying squadron. They are given it by their fellow seasoned, veteran pilots of the squadron. As most times it's not flattering, although appropriate. Such as "Maverick", which is cool, although it does show that he likes to do things alone and by his own rules . . . thus, Maverick.
As for "theme music", it would've been a "overkill" a little too "80's".
As with your on-point observation of the love scene with Penny, they didn't need to do another 80's-type love scene to a love ballad (i.e Berlin's Take My Breath Away).
Lastly, when you think about it, "Goose" was all over this movie. He was constantly referred to, and became the constant-companion-advisor for both Pete "Maverick" and Bradley "Rooster".
Pete is Maverick no-more. He will now have a wife & daughter, and a son; as they will become family, and watch over one another . . . they will become each others "Goose".
    GREAT REACTION!

Irony.....the pilot Bob, his dad in real life is Bill Pullman who played the president/pilot in the movie, independence Day! The actors flew every day for 90 minutes at a time, and had to correct their own makeup, helmets, gear, volume, cameras, etc.! Penny was mentioned in the first movie! The plane in the end is actually Tom's! Rooster actually played the piano! Penny drives the same era, and silver, that Charlie drove! Hangman was a combination of young Iceman, and young maverick...he is obviously the best pilot, like young Ice, and a real narcissistic attitude like young Maverick! And also my favorite character!! Val kilmer, Iceman has throat cancer in real life.

A love the amount of military laws that were broken in both movies. If this were real life, Maverick would have been either executed (that is right, you can be executed for destroying military property, including buzzing a tower) or spending many years in a military prison.
