The aircraft in this movie was the F-14 Tomcat, one of the most legendary fighter jets in the history of aviation. The early models that they flew were prone to compressor stalls, which in extreme cases, could result in flat spins. Goose's death was based off of a real accident... the canopy is supposed to get jettisoned away from the aircraft when they eject, but in a flat spin it was found that it actually has a tendency to sort of hover right over the top of the aircraft, which is why Goose hit it. Procedures were changed in the cases of flat spins to where the pilot and RIO would have to manually jettison the canopy before ejecting to avoid this. But the Tomcat was a great aircraft... it was retired from service in 2007 (more so because of politics than anything else, unfortunately).

R.I.P. F-14 Tomcat, unfairly retired in 2006 due to military budget cuts. Grumman's planned F-14 Super Tomcat 21 would have been a beautiful fighter jet, rivaling the Air Force 's F-15 Strike Eagle, if only it hadn't been cancelled by the Navy.

Hey, Liv!!! One of my all-time favorite movies! I was a 14 year old high school freshman when this movie came out, and I must have seen it on the big screen a half-dozen times. I also wore out my cassette of the soundtrack as well. When it released on VHS, it was the first VHS movie I owned. So...yep, one of my favorites!
Enlistment in the US Navy jumped up in huge numbers after this movie came out...to the tune of around 500%!!!
"Take My Breath Away" by Berlin (the love theme) won the Academy Award for Best Song.
    - 3:22 - Aircraft carriers have special tripwires to stop the planes, and the planes have a hook that lowers to latch on to the wire. The trick is to trap the second wire of the three wires across the deck. The carrier that they are on is the U.S.S. Enterprise (CVN-65) or "The Big E" which was decommisioned in 2017. However a new 'Enterprise' goes into service in 2028.
    - Tom was all of 24 when this was released in 1986. This was the film that made him "Tom Cruise"...full superstar achievement UNLOCKED!
    - 11:07 - This was one of Meg Ryan's first movie roles. Prior to this she was on soap operas and tv with small film roles. Her first leading role was a year later with 'InnerSpace' (1987) where she met her husband Dennis Quaid (their son Jack was in 'The Hunger Games' and is currently in 'The Boys' on Amazon Prime). In 1989, she did 'When Harry Met Sally...' and became the darling of the 1990s and the 2000s.
    - 15:31 - The canopy of the F-14 had a problem that actually led to a real death much like Goose's in the movie. The timing of the canopy coming off and the pilot and RIO ejecting was off and caused the manufacturer of the plane to rethink the timing so that a few seconds after the canopy blows the occupants are ejected. Add to the fact that the flat spin caused the canopy to not get out of the way anyway, Goose went up and it caused his neck to be broken. Technically, the flat spin wouldn't cause the plane to head out to sea, it would drop like a rock.
    - 20:34 - There is a catapult device to help propel the jets off of the deck, add to the fact that the plane has reved its engine up to almost full thrust when they take off...the length of the runway is almost incidental.
Another famous face in the movie was the character of Merlin, Cougar's RIO (Radio Intercept Officer) at the beginning and Maverick's RIO at the end...it was future Oscar winner Tim Robbins.
Thanks for this reaction! I have yet to see 'Top Gun Maverick'...but I REALLY, REALLY want to!!!

I love this movie, I joined the Navy in 88 but I didn't see this movie until years later. LOL That being said I want to make an observation. What most people fail to realized is that Goose's death was more Iceman's fault that anyone's . Here is a guy that is known for being cool under pressure and making sound logical decisions but he allowed his competitive nature to get the best of him. He was acting like Maverick in this instance and that's what caused the accident. I mean he didn't have the shot and everyone was tell him to disengage but his desire to win clouded his judgement. Once he concluded that he couldn't get the shot he pulled off erratically in front of Maverick and Goose out of frustration and the rest was a domino effect. I am sure for a guy that is constantly going off about safety concerns would understand the danger that might cause? I would have just like to see a little self reflection from Iceman, Just a thought.

21:03 it depends on the kind of tracking the missile is using. There's no way to notify the pilot with passive heat tracking as there's no way for the aircraft to realize its being targeted. But with radar tracking its possible for the aircraft to sense the radar pings off of it and notify the pilot. But in the case of the film, the notifications make it easier for the audience to follow the action. So they just use the notifications regardless just for clarity.

Goose died because he forgot to detach the canopy before ejecting. You even hear Maverick yell, “Watch the canopy!" before they eject. In fighter jets at the time, you had to detach the canopy first and then eject. Modern jets do both automatically. Because Goose didn't allow the canopy to detach first, he slammed his head into the canopy when he ejected because there wasn't enough time for the canopy to clear before the seats ejected.

    • @audiodude74
      @audiodude74 2 года назад +1

    • @44excalibur
      @44excalibur 2 года назад

@@audiodude74 True, but the flat spin you see in Top Gun is not how a flat spin happens in real life. Iceman says that the spin is sending Maverick “out to sea." In reality a flat spin sends the plane spiraling downward, not laterally like a frisbee. So yes, the canopy does hang around a bit in a low pressure situation, but Goose still should have detached the canopy earlier before ejecting. Again, modern fighters now have the the canopy detach first and then eject the pilot and RIO automatically pulling the eject handle.

so this is from a DCS WORLD flight sim player so take it with a grain of salt - yes, in combat aircraft, you know when an enemy radar has you "locked on".
normally, in airspace with potential for combat, aircraft are using their radar emitters to sweep back and forth across the sky to see if there is anybody out there (very important because radar can detect and shoot you down from 50 miles away... that's way farther than you can possibly see with your eyes). your plane however can detect this and your plane will tell you that someone in that general direction is emitting radar to sweep the sky, the radar has hit you, and they can probably see you.
but when they put you in "lock", that means that the radar is no longer sweeping the sky back and forth and just occasionally illuminating you, it is focusing all of its radar energy and FOLLOWING YOU. the Radar Warning Receiver can tell the difference between when someone was just seeing you vs. when they have concentrated on you. and when they have concentrated on you, that probably means they're about to fire a misssile at you.
you have a fun channel btw. you kind of look like kate beckinsale but you sound like a british nanny or something : ) .

When you have one engine, plane wants to move sideways and there is a risk of a flat spin. This is especially dangerous when you fly at slow speed as one wing can stall (not have enough lift to keep the wing holding the plane). Real pilot Kara Hultgreen died because this F-14 beast did that trick, compressor failure when she was flying low and about to land. F-14 is quite a beast to tame and this is why only the best were assigned an F-14 Tomcat. Kara was appointed politically and the plane did not care. The F-14 beast just killed her. There was a checklist she did not follow. And that checklist could have saved her life.
Political appointments are very dangerous for those appointed. Another political appointment was Richard Bong WWII ace in the pacific. He was very aggresive, very daring and by having a P-38 Lightning which was a powerful plane, he used the strengths of that plane he managed a high score. But he was reckless, he loved to fly under bridges and things like that.
After being decorated, he was appointed as test pilot. The next best thing aside of being an ace was to be a test pilot. But while air combat is about killing the enemy, being a test pilot is about taming a beast, your plane.
To tame the beast the pilot needs to know his machine to a point the pilot should be able to modify it. This is what Chuck Yeager did. Also a test pilot must be disciplined with studying and following checklists to the letter. These checklists are designed to save your life. Richard Bong was not the guy who loved checklists or modifying a hotrod. He was daring and one day he flew, did not follow a checklist, lost control and in a few seconds he died.
A real fighter pilot must be humble. The problem of ego is that it does not listen, and if an enemy is better, a big ego will not see that until it is too late. A humble person is more likely to learn from his enemy. Jet combat is usually solved in a matter of seconds.

The runway on an aircraft carrier IS very short, around 100 yards or the length of a football field. The aircraft launch with the assistance of a steam powered catapult that attaches to the nose landing gear. Basically a slingshot of sorts. The fighter jets are at full throttle with the afterburners engaged for maximum boost.
On the flipside of the coin, landing is done with the help of arresting cables. There's at least 2 or more laid across the landing area. The aircraft has a hook at the tail end which grabs one of the cables which helps it stop in such a short distance. When the aircraft lands, the pilot actually engages full throttle on the engines in case it misses all the arresting cables and it can then take off, circle around and try again.

    9:18 Aviators wearing Aviators 🤷🏻‍♂️
15:16 a bit of science - the flat spin is caused by an engine stall (they depicted it incorrectly here as they showed both engines failing). Because of the width between the engines on an F-14, if one stalls and the other is still going, it creates uneven lateral thrust, which spins the aircraft around its own centreline. This is a problem on its own, but it creates another problem - zero air pressure on the top of the aircraft. This disrupts the ejection sequence - canopy jettison>RIO seat>Pilot seat - because of the zero pressure, the canopy hovers over the cockpit briefly instead of clearing away, obstructing the RIO seat as it is ejected. Basically it’s like firing someone head first out of a canon into a plate of glass 2 feet away. Goose suffered fatal head and spinal trauma - fractured skull, broken neck and likely compressed spine - the only mercy would be that death was instantaneous.
15:59 not just his friend, his voice of reason, the only one who puts up with his ego-fuelled bs and brings him back down. It’s a dangerous job, even in training, which is why they got ripped a new one for breaking the ‘hard deck’ earlier on, it’s a rule for safety. It’s also why Viper tells him “you’ve go to let him go”. The irony is, for all his recklessness, this accident wasn’t Maverick’s fault. Carole accepts that it’s not his fault because she knows that there’s always a possibility Goose may not come home one day.
17:38 yes he did - just before that, when Ice was giving his condolences, Maverick was emptying out his locker. Only one reaction channel I’ve seen realised that (I can’t remember which one), so don’t worry that you didn’t.
20:27 about 300 yards, an airport/airfield runway is well over 1000 yards. This is why carriers have the Catapult system - a steam piston that propels the aircraft from 0-170mph in about 2 seconds. That’s a rollercoaster ride and a half!
21:04 kind of (another incorrect depiction). Aircraft have various warning systems, one of those is a Radar Warning Receiver, which tells them they have been detected by the radar of another aircraft with a ‘bee-boo-bee-boo’ sound, another tells them a radar guided missile has been fired and is tracking them, a very intense ‘blip-blip-blip-blip’. In this case they were fired at with a heat seeking missile which doesn’t have radar guidance, so the only way they would know is by eyeballing the smoke trail, so again another incorrect depiction… but now I’m nitpicking 😂
24:30 she indeed went to Washington, that’s why she doesn’t return in the sequel. My take on it is: she used Maverick to further her career (“Your MiG sighting is really important to my work”), left when he needed her the most, and only came back after hearing about his heroics. A career driven woman with a job in Washington and a guy who just wants to fly at Mach 2 in the Navy (Pacific Fleet), it’s very complicated as Mav suggested it would be, and long distance relationships don’t usually work out.
    Top Gun Trivia:
The carrier deck scenes were filmed aboard the USS Enterprise at sunrise. This is what gives a lot of those silhouetted shots that Sepia like hue. They were filming while the fleet was on active duty, so it had a course that it had to follow, and at one point the carrier turned and they lost the lighting for the shots, so director Tony Scott requested the ship turn back for a few more minutes. When the ship’s commander told him it would cost $25k to do so, Scott pulled out his personal chequebook and wrote one out on the spot. In a later interview he said that he made sure the cheque bounced 😂
The end credits has a message at the end: “dedicated to the memory of Art Scholl”. Art Scholl was a stunt pilot and aerial cameraman. During filming, he lost control of his camera plane, which plunged into the Pacific Ocean - neither the plane nor his body were ever recovered 😢
To make the cockpit scenes as real as possible, they took the cast up in jets to give them a sense of what it’s like to fly and pull Gs. During this ‘training’, Anthony Edwards (Goose) was the only one who didn’t throw up. Fast forward to Top Gun: Maverick, and for the cockpit scenes, they were actually in airborne jets. During the training (which Tom Cruise organised himself), out of the 12 cast members who went up, only 3 managed to not throw up - Miles Teller, who plays Goose’s son Rooster, was one of the 3 - like “father”, like “son”.
During the dogfight scene in the final act, the US Defence Department permitted the firing of 2 missiles - an AIM-7 Sparrow from the F-14, and an AIM-9 Sidewinder from the “MiG-28” (a fictional aircraft depicted by the Navy’s F-5). They filmed the launches with a few different camera angles, and with some editing in post-production, they were able to make it look like multiple missiles were fired - it was so well done that the DD launched an official investigation to find out if there had been more than the 2 permitted launches. Missiles a very expensive you know 😂
Kenny Loggins originally provided one song for the soundtrack (Playing With The Boys), but due to a legal dispute leading to Toto pulling out, Loggins was approached to help finish and perform Danger Zone, and now I just can’t imagine anyone else performing it. 🎵Hiiiiiighwaaaay to the, danger zone, gonna take it riiiiight in to the, danger zooone🎵 🎸

Normally in an enjection what happens first is the canopy is blown in normal conditions its miles away when the seats go a few seconds later (rear seat goes first all the time) in this situation because of the spin the canopy stayed right above the seats when they blew. Today if a situation like this were to happen the seats are raised higher than the officer's heads and can punch right through the canopy if need be. This happened to a friend of mine when the seat malfunctioned and punched her out, she survived though at times I'm sure she wished she hadn't. She got a callsign from it that has still stuck with her "Punchout"

Yeah a carrier “runway” is extremely short, but they get catapulted off it while on full afterburner, so they don’t need as much runway compared to taking off on a normal runway. Same for landing, the tail hook catches the cables bringing the aircraft to a quick stop. Nice reaction to one of my favourite movies

The planes could not have been as close as is shown in the movie. Just as you said the planes would have collided. However the shot recreates an image in the article that inspired the movie. The picture showed two F-14s flying close to each other, with one of them inverted. But in fact the planes were not directly on top of each other, one of the planes was farther away from the camera, but the picture was taken from a long distance so the F-14 look about the same size so it creates the illusion that the planes were right on top of each other.

Actually they can. Over here in Britain we had a couple Russian jets move into our airspace. Two of our boys went out to intercept and see them off (no shooting just prodding and poking).
Well let’s just say, one of our pilots did that to them.
    - interestingly enough the pilots mother is a good friend of our family and when we heard about it in the news papers we went “give you a bet it’s him”… well it wasn’t long after the pilots name was confirmed and out suspicions confirmed too.

When someone fires at you, you are notified only if it is a radar guided missile, which can be either fire and forget or semiactive where your plane sends a signal that bounces on the enemy and the missile sees it and goes for the target. But if it is an infrared missile, you will not hear anything. Infrared seeks heat. Either the radar signal of the enemy missile or the enemy plane radar bouncing its signal on your plane is what warns you. Heat seeking missiles give no warn.
A trick to kill a plane, if missile ranges overlap, is to fire a radar missile and an infrared missile. So the enemy believes that he evaded the lock, but the infrared hits him.
In modern wars it is hard to have even one kill. If you have 3 kills you have seen a lot of action.

compressor stall was common in the tomcat. that is what went wrong. normally the canopy would be blown back from wind but since they were in a flat spin the canopy just hovered above them in the burble. ejection seats now have spikes on the top to break the canopy should a pilot hit it.

Short runway, on a carrier it is short. Thus you see they spool up full engine power against a "blast type door" basically. Then they add in a steam driven catapult to kinda just sling the fighter off the deck. You go from a stop to lift in seconds. Now lands are another thing. U will see a tail hook come down, that hits an arresting cable. Which basically slams the aircraft on the deck and stops forward motion. That's the basic jist. I guess dumbed down. But that's what happens.

I found the best way to get a feel for the pilots experience is flight sims. I really like DCS myself. I recommend it if you want to try it. IL2 is quite good as well (Pacific Battles, you could take off and land on carriers.)
You can in dcs but I think you need to buy additional aircraft (FA-18 Hornet, Corsair, F14, Harrier) I don't have access to my PC so can't use it anymore. Or check out Growling Sidewider, he is a good pilot with some nice short videos.
He he, "Don't they turn fast" yes, but you can't turn as fast at higher speeds, it's tricky and complex. You kinda need a lesson from a good instructor and to experience it in something like a flight sim.
edit : some good films, "Reach For The Sky", "Battle Of Britain", "Air America" and "Memphis Belle".
"Those Magnificent Men In Their flying machines" ( a bit niche, but some great flying sequences (early aircraft pre ww1.)

They were in a flat spin. When the Ejection system blew the canopy it stayed above the cockpit instead of drifting away. It wasn't a flaw; it was the nature of the spin they were in. The F-14A's 'flaw' was in its engines; they were susceptible to compressor stalls due to ingesting turbulent airflow like jet wash.
