Mach 1 is the speed of sound which is 767.27 mpg. Hence Mach 10 would be a mind boggling 7,672.7 mph (varying a bit by altitude/barometric pressure/humidity). The Darkstar aircraft (aka Lockheed Martin SR-72) is a "hypothetical" descendant of the SR-71 Blackbird (which looks somewhat similar) and which had a top speed of Mach 3.3 or around 2,700 mph and played a big role in high altitude, high speed reconnaissance flights during the Cold-War. You might notice the small skunk emblem on the tail of the mock-up in the movie which stands for Lockheed-Martin's skunkworks which created the first SR-71, the F-117 Nighthawk (the first Stealth Fighter), and probably lots of other interesting experimental aircraft the public doesn't know about yet. I may be mistaken but I think a lot of testing of Skunkworks aircraft is done in Area 51 in Nevada (made famous by UFO theorists) which is probably where the movie is trying to suggest Maverick is assigned at the start of the film. Probably kind of goofy since Maverick is an active duty Navy Pilot and the SR-72 would be an Air Force aircraft rather than a Navy aircraft.
There is a really interesting critique of this flight on YT by a former Air Force Pilot named C.W. Lemoine (channel by same name) who pointed out there would be a zero percent chance of Maverick surviving an ejection or the break-up of an aircraft traveling any faster than Mach 3 (let alone at >Mach 10) unless the aircraft had an actual ejection capsule built into it that would attempt to protect a pilot ejecting at such insane speeds.
The "rogue nation" with the nuclear program is never named in the film but is pretty clearly Iran since it has one of the only air forces in the world that still owns some F-14s (the plane stolen by Maverick and Rooster). The F-14s were sold by the US to the Shah of Iran (friendly to the US) who was subsequently deposed by the Islamic Revolution in the 1970s (presently VERY unfriendly to the US and which coincidentally has a uranium enrichment program everyone is worried about).

I mean I think everyone knew he's dead after ejecting at mach 10 but apparently sr-71 had special ejection seats that would allow the pilot to eject at mach 3 and survive.

thats why he worn a pressure suit once the engines are destroyed and right before they cut to the next scene Mav reduced the thorrtle since they didn't go into detail about the ejection sequench we can take a look at past times when select few pilots who had ejected at mach speeds since pilots who fly the SR 71 wear pressurized suits when they eject their suits gets pressurized when they get eject which protects them from being pummeled ..

Just in case nobody else mentioned it. Mach numbers (named after Ernst Mach, an early aviation engineer/pioneer) are multiples of the speed of sound at sea level. To date no air-breathing aircraft has ever flown at mach 10. The plane Maverick was working on, and flying at the end, is an historic warbird, a P-51. It is Tom Cruise's own airplane, on loan to the production.

He plays the part with skill you really don't see in his other rolls. Also starring Ken Watanabe as The Samurai he learns from, The musical score was done by Hans Zimmer , cinematography by John Toll. P.S. So Mach 1 is the speed of sound. The fastest recorded speed from a plane is about Mach 3.5ish from the SR-71 Blackbird. The company that was advertised on the plane at the beginning is “Skunkworks” they’re a real company that works with the Navy on actual planes just like the one at the beginning. It’s cool cus Tom Cruise actually went to their facility where they design and make real planes with the navy and he helped with the design of the cockpit if the plane they showed cus in real situations they work with the actual test pilots to design the cockpits to what’s comfortable for that test pilot. Literally they made this movie as accurate and realistic as they could and still having it be an exciting Top Gun type film. Obviously some CGI but they really had all the actors in real F-18’s pulling G’s at real top speeds for about 85% of the shots you see them in. Never been done before and was very expensive but so worth it. Just in the F-18’s the footage they had before editing was more than the entire lord of the rings trilogy combined.

6:20 Callsigns as far as I know are usually given to you. Like for Hangman, they call him that as Phoenix explains in the movie.
Bob's callsign is interesting since it's just his name. Either he chose to keep it or they just let him have that name.
Another example from the previous movie, one of the other pilots refers to Goose as "Mama Goose" which is probably a subtle tiny hint as to how Goose got the callsign.
It can be either a pattern of what you do as a pilot, how you fly the plane, or actions that merit your callsign being given to you. Or someone coming up with a nickname for you because of something memorable at the time that it just sticks and has nothing to do with your actual skills.

Callsigns are voted on by squadron/unit pilots in a somewhat elaborate ceremony involving whiskey and much swearing. It's best earned and my guess is that Rooster's unit mates were aware of his father's Callsign. For example we had a guy named NAFOD (no apparent fear of death) who almost killed himself for buffoonery...best earned. Mach 1.0 is the speed of sound...Mach 10.0 well you can do the math. 6:15 a pilots callsign is given to them by their fellow pilots, and is typically something reflecting an embarrassing incident that happened during or prior to their training that theyre renowned for.
For example, a trainee a few years back has the UNFORTUNATE last name of "Jobbins", so he got given the callsign Blow, as in, Blowjobbins.
Callsigns like Hangman could be given out to people like Hangman if they do make a habit of being selfish and leaving ther wingmen out to dry, but callsigns like Maverick, or Iceman etc are considered "too cool" to be actually used. A name like Phoenix though, could be earned if the pilot happens to have been shot down on several occasions and survived. Contrary to common belief, a callsign also isnt life long. You could lose your current callsign in favour of another "cool" callsign, they earn them through big or heroic feats they pull off in active combat.

Mach 10 with a little more science and physics being involved in the actual Mp/h calculation is essentially 10x the speed of sound. A lot of fighter jets since the F-16 have been capable of surpassing Mach 1 for periods of time and so was one commercial jet that’s now out of commission at this point, the Concorde. The are more commercial jets being built and tested today that will be capable of carrying passengers at supersonic speeds but for now the only way to travel faster then the speed of sound is to join the Air Force or become an astronaut. The movie is surmising that Tom Cruise is becoming the fastest pilot on the planet (though not by as much as you would think as the Darkstar plane he’s flying is based on a real plane the SR-72 Blackbird which was an experimental top secret spy plane used in the latter part of the Cold War capable of approaching Mach 10 but not surpassing it as Tom does in the movie.)

6:12 "Do they get to pick their call signs?"
In the real world Navy and Air Force...no. Your squadron colleagues assign one, and it usually reflects something stupid you did, something funny that happened to you, or something peculiar about your name/background. Unlike the first TG where everyone's call sign was badass, this movie tried to follow the real world method but didn't quite go that far. Examples of real call signs and their origins...
    1) A Navy pilot crapped himself after being launched off a carrier and requested an immediate landing. He earned the call sign SPOT = Shit Pants On Takeoff
    2) A female pilot was named Katrina, so everyone called her Hurricane.
    3) CDR Jesse Reed (an actual Top Gun instructor) had the call sign AHAB = Always Humping Asian Bitches
    4) COL Nicole Malachowski (first female Thunderbird pilot) was training with her first squadron and made a big mistake in a simulator. She began chastising herself by saying, "Fucking idiot! Fucking idiot!" which everyone heard on the intercom. Thus, she earned the call sign FIFI.

Flying F-18's on this mission is pure Hollywood, as there are multiple ways to attack the facility without putting pilots at risk with a "miracle" approach. Don't get me wrong...it was GREAT storytelling, but most military people will tell you that it was complete fiction. Despite that tiny flaw, this was easily the best film of the year.

Your question about the speed of sound is not stupid, it's accurate. Yes, at the beginning when he was test flying that airplane, he's going faster than the speed of sound.
Mach 1 is the speed of sound which is about 1235 km/h. Mach 10 is 10 times that, imagine.

Short answer? Yes... it is really, *really* fast.
Long Answer? So... Mach 1 is the speed of sound, which is equal to 1,234.8 kilometers per hour or 767.269 Miles per Hour for Americans like me. Recently, there was a lot of buzz surrounding the Chinese launching a "Hypersonic Missile" over the US. Hypersonic is Mach 5, or 3,500 mph (5,633 kph); so 5 times faster than the speed of sound (though the funny thing is that the higher up in orbit, the lower the threshold is because of the thinner air).
Mach 10 is insanely fast, with only the Space Shuttle and Rockets that go into space being able to reach that speed for the time being. Mach 10 is about 7,672.69 mph (12,348 kmh).
For reference to something you might use daily, the average SUV will only go to about 80-100 mph (128-161 kmh); and for reference to the movie, the top speed of an F-18 Super Hornet is Mach 1.8 or 1,190 mph (or 1915 kmh).
As for why the Navy would want one.... Well the Navy would have no need of something like the Darkstar; but the US Air Force or Space Force would want something like it for sure; as they would probably use it as an interceptor to shoot down the Hypersonic Missiles I mentioned earlier (With missiles aboard the craft of course, as they are travelling faster than bullets).
Only problem is that past Mach 5.5 to Mach 6, Jet intakes stop working as the air is moving so fast that the fuel cannot ignite in a combustion engine. So without literal rocket boosters like on the space shuttle; Mach 10 isn't technically possible on a craft like the Darkstar. At best it would reach Mach 5.5 to Mach 6... which no matter what would be a success, imo; since it would still be good as an interceptor (people theorizing it's a recon aircraft have some merit; but at those speeds it would be impossible to take accurate pictures that would be safer to get from a satellite).
The movie only went with Mach 10 because it was a nice clean number that sounded fast.
Don't think I'm hating on this movie, cause I love it; just wanted to put this out there.
