Yeah so Val contracted throat cancer in real life. There is a docu on Hulu I think called "Val" that you can watch for more info, but AFAIK he can't even speak, so I'm guessing the whisper lines he had were dubbed by someone else? But I love that they brought him back for this regardless.
Every reviewer that wonders how Maverick's going to land the F-14 without a wheel....needs to watch "The Final Countdown"(1980). They showed a textbook landing in the net for a wounded jet in that film. "Top Gun Maverick" did the same maneuver.

Regarding action stars, I have a message for Hollywood...... get working on an action movie that stars Tom Cruise and Keannu Reeves, rapidly. They will kill it with box office with the right movie and right story and start a new franchise in the process.
They filmed that scene with an F18 and used computer animation to replace it with the jet that is in the movie since it doesn't exist. In the real world a jet is not and cannot be going that fast upon takeoff, but it is Hollywood.
