    In my view (and, I believe, that of many others), the movie is about “hope”. And it is Red who is redeemed. Remember that Red said that in prison hope is a dangerous thing. Andy took a different view, as witnessed by his letter. And remember what Red says at the very end. “I hope to see my friend and shake his hand. I hope the Pacific is as blue as it has been in my dreams.” So, Red’s hope has been restored.

    I don't think the title refers to Andy. I think it refers to Red. Andy was innocent. He did not need to be redeemed. It was Red who was redeemed. Red was guilty of the crime of murder. He took a life. Through his friendship with Andy and the assistance he provided, Andy was able to escape from a terrible and unjust fate. This was an act of restoring a life that had been unjustly taken. Through this act, Red is redeemed and becomes worthy of life as a free man.

    • @meminustherandomgooglenumbers
      @meminustherandomgooglenumbers 2 года назад

      Yup, just like in American Beauty, where the Beauty is actually Angela, who discovers herself at the very end, shown in the brief moment where she turns away from the mirror. But if you read about that movie on the Wikipedia page, she isn't even mentioned until the second paragraph of the plot section.

    • @0okamino
      @0okamino 2 года назад +2

      You’re right about Red. However, Andy also felt a need for redemption. Not from the crime which he didn’t commit, but from his feelings of guilt over his marriage falling apart and resulting in the circumstances of her death.

    • @ridleysaria
      @ridleysaria 2 года назад +1

      I believe the title is even more literal. Andy redeemed Shawshank itself. He made the prison better. The prisoners who knew him all seemed to be better people and the corruption was driven out.

      Also, earlier in the movie, during the toss of the cell, the warden was holding that book and quoting from it, then gave it back to Andy after Andy also quoted that book(to prove that he was a silly religious fanatic like the warden, to gain favor) when the warden was about to leave.
      Had the warden opened that book it would've been game over.

    • @meminustherandomgooglenumbers
      @meminustherandomgooglenumbers 2 года назад

      @@OriginalPuro yup that's the double meaning Andy packed into the quote. Andy's salvation, the rock hammer, was inside the bible while the Warden was holding the bible in his hand. So the warden uttered that phrase while unknowingly handing the bible-encased hammer back to Andy.
      That's why the warden's expertly-portrayed slack-jawed shock at the realization, is so satisfying. If you watch that scene closely, you can see the life starting to drain out of the warden before even dropping the bible, as he "imperceptibly slumped" (to borrow a phrase uttered by another great actor in another underatted classic film) before he even took a step toward the desk.

    • @kaiyamya9882

      @@OriginalPuro I like to think the warden's failure to open the book is a commentary on other so-called "religious" people of his ilk. So many people who claim to know the Bible inside and out have never actually read it, only skimming it to find passages that suit their worldview.

    as a few people has commented on other peoples reaction on shawshank redemption.
    Just imagine sitting in a prison from 1905-1955. What happened during those years?
    The airplane had been invited only 2 years prior. Very few cars existed, Henry ford started producing the T-ford in 1908, so it was after that cars became more of a thing.
    2 world wars has passed, alot of changes in the political world with changes in the colonial society and world politics started to grew.
    Just imagine entering prison with 0 cars, and airplanes barely able to carry 1 person and some mails.
    And then exiting prison with 500k cars everywhere, and they don't even need a horse to drive it, airplanes to take you all over the world.

    Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things and no good thing ever dies....is what appears time and again in this great movie, Andy never gives up hope, Red has given up on it but reclaims it through Andy, he discovers his humanity if you will. As for the discussion below about the ending I believe Frank Darabont did have an ambiguous ending, but the studio said to him that after what the audience audience had been put through for 2 hours they deserved a reward that satisfied them and Darabont did it and has as far as I know never regretted it. One reason why its become a great film and says something about the human spirit even though it did little when it was released (for many reasons) but got watched when TV entrepreneur got it played on his new movie channel and word of mouth spread the new to the video rental business and a legend was born.....

    Thank you for such an insightful, intelligent reaction. This is the first of yours I've read, and it won't be the last.
    I wrote the following before I noticed that others had already expressed the same point of view...that the redemption was actually Red's, not Andy's. Andy had nothing to atone for. Red, on the other hand, had committed a murder and had spent decades in prison denying it. At the last of his pitches to the parole board, he finally told the truth and redeemed himself. Unusual for the movie's title to refer not to the main character but to the secondary character...but I think that's a little piece of the film's brilliance.

    "Why are they just picking on him?"
    They aren't just picking on him, but his abuse is the only part that is relevant to the story. Red implies near the beginning that they've been at it a long while before Andy arrived.

    $370,000 back then would be close to the value of ($700,000 something dollars today) and when you have that amount in Mexico you might as well can times that value 2-3 times

      370,000 in 1966 is about the equivalent of 3.3 million today.

    Frank Darabont, who scripted and directed this, seems to have a knack for Stephen King adaptations. He also scripted and directed The Mist and The Green Mile. They're all good, but personally, I think Shawshank is the best.

    I prefered "Brubaker" over shawshank redemption.A movie put together in 1980, starred Robert redford. I reckon it paved the way for many movies of this genre..coincidentally morgan freeman was also in this film...
