Restored 1930’s Shastock Solotone

Most people who play vintage jazz and Broadway shows are familiar with the Shastock Solotone mute as they’re the standard for the sound in those instances. This particular specimen was REALLY rough and took more time than usual. I needed to remake the wood resonator panels and install a new tube. Louis Shastock experimented with different tube diameters during this period before settling on the best (smaller) size but this one came with the large tube. I would love to say that there is a specific tube length that works well for all of the Solotone mutes but often it’s a little bit of trial-and-error before glueing it in. The dimensions weren’t always the same on the mute body with some being made longer and some shorter. It’s not usually by much but it can make a difference. This one is ready to go and plays great!
