God damn it. That moment with the gardener and repositioning the rock made me shed 1 tear. He took two for the team, in life and death.
The Gardner Uejiro totally stole the show in this episode. I also loved the scene of Blackthorne fixing the rock.
@@JeremyIceAndFire33can you elaborate further?
@AAZer0 sure, for me when i look for a standout performance in an episode, its not so much about the amount of screentime a character has but the impact they have on the core characters. For me the gardener represents just how much Blackthorne still doesn't realize the full gravity that his own words carry now that he is a Hatamoto. When he realized that it was his "nobody touch or die" line that led to the gardners actual death, a line that he thought nothing of at the time, Blackthorne finally starts to realize the weight words carry in a place like this. Him fixing the rock at the end of the episode was his way of honoring the Gardners sacrifice.
@@JeremyIceAndFire33 Thanks for elaborating. I wanted to hear others thoughts too because I thought he played an interesting role. Also, I appreciate your recaps. I look forward to them every week 👍 I thought this is the best episode so far in my opinion. There was a lot to take from it.
@AAZer0 yea the show just continues to get better & better. I love a goid action scene as much as the next fan but these intriguing character moments we've been getting have been great. These scenes really offer the actors a chance to showcase their range. And Thanks for watching the reviews, much appreciated 🙏
No single episode is my “favorite” as I’m really enjoying this series. One thing for me though, is that I like this version of Buntaro a lot more than the 80’s version. This Buntaro speaks “warrior” more than the previous one.
Totally! Shin'nosuke Abe is great as Buntaro.
Fuji is quickly becoming the break-out character it seems.
Yea she's been great.
HOTD trailer dropping tomorrow 🤗
How many episodes does Shogun have ?
10 Episodes
@@JeremyIceAndFire33Think I'll start watching it soon
Not enough episodes the show is phenomenal.
With Blackthorne giving Toranaga his swords to "replace" the swords Toranaga lost, Toranaga "rewards" Blackthorne by increasing his "income" and presenting Blackthorne with new swords.
Mariko dies near the end of the story. She goes to Osaka castle to confront Ishido and traps him into a situation where he has no choice but to allow the family members (hostages) of several prominent Daimyo to leave Osaka. So he hires ninja to kidnap her, but they fail and she commits a form of suicide to prevent her capture.
Toranaga is the one that hires the ninja to burn Blackthorne's ship, to convince the christian Daimyo like Kiyama to side with him. Because without the ship, Blackthorne isn't a threat to the Portuguese Black Ship, trade, and the Jesuits. But of course, Blackthorne is also a trained ship builder and Toranaga asks him to build another ship.
Please, next time put a spoiler warning before dropping info like that, the majority of ppl watching the show haven't read the book
Great Video
I think This has been my favorite episode by far. The acting is phenomenal. This new version of this story is hitting hard and is compelling and even though certain things from the novel they have made some slight changes leaving out some key things for me with the Seppuku scene which is an important scene in the novel about blackthorn. My favorite scene in this episode had to be the arrow scene there was so much tension between the three of them. I also loved the comments Mariko made about the 8 fold fence later on and the refusal to speak to blackthorn which is different and a bit intriguing to me. Toranaga was pretty pissed at his son with the situation with the messenger and I see a potential arc developing there. The actress that plays fujiko is amazing she has the best facial expressions. Overall this series so far at the halfway point has been beautifully filmed and is such a compelling take on the novel.
Yea this was a great episode & definitely some of the best acting I've seen all season.
I love Fujiko’s character. My favorite scene is when she snapped at Blackthorne to give up the guns, and then turns around to threaten Omi with the gun. I said to myself “now THERE’S a woman who’s got nothing to lose.” making her the true alpha of that town 😍
And the comment about tossing the stew into the sea 🤣
Episode 3: ima fan of buntaro fighting the whole town scene, great samurai sacrifice.
Episode 5: buntaro drunk off sake playing Arrow Roulette with Mariko. Im not a big fan of Buntaro anymore. Lol
So much to say, Buntaro kneeling in front of Blackthorne and begging forgiveness, with a word Blackthorne could have had him end his life
The Taiko's brilliance of the construction of the council, he is the only person in the story that is Toronaga's intellectual equal
Blackthorne's enlightenment, pun intended
And my favorite part "All my war stories are full of holes", I couldn't stop snickering at that, old sailors joke about cannon and ships
Yea i absolutely loved the dialog on display in this episode. That dinner scene, whew!!! So many great moments.
We're all different, this is my least-liked episode, and the same with the original series. Good acting yes, but absurd situations with supposedly extreme English stupidity.
My best ep so far
It was revealing to learn that Buntaro does have a heart in that after harming Mariko he does realize that he brought shame to the household. Even Blackthorne couldn't bring himself to carry on his resentment over Buntaro's behavior.
Yea even with Buntaro's distain for Blackthorne he still managed to feel remorseful for disrupting the Wa. Great scene.
Really good ep, probably my favorite so far.
Phenomenal acting in this episode
The Best review I saw. Very meticulously. Thank you.
Wow thanks 🙏
Great video, I liked the episode, there was a lot of great character development but it wasn’t my favorite so far, I found it pretty slow. Still 7.5/10 though
I don't think the gardener is dead. Just like with buntaro, no body = no death. Even Toranaga was kinda avoiding the topic. He used him as a scapegoat. I definitely think he's been sent off to edo to be a spy. I've never read the book or watched the old show so I have no clue what happens.
Hmmm very interesting theory. I do try to always say unless we see an actual body always assume the person in question could still be alive. 🤔
I don't understand why Blackthrone wanted that rotting pheasant to remain.
He was trying to cure the meat i think.
