🔥🔥🔥This was a hot episode, It should have been called, The Reveal. When Blackthorne reveals the information that was hidden from Toranaga( which was my favorite part) my heart started pumping Blackthorne also got a reveal from the priest, when in prison. I enjoyed the expression of unspoken words on Toranaga and Marikos when Blackthorne explained the map😎
Another excellent recap. I'm watching the series and after each episode I watch your recap to help keep everything straight. I usually don't make that kind of effort, but the show is so good and your recaps are so good, it's worth it.
The 'reveal' by Blackthorne was riveting. Sanada did an incredible job of reacting to the information with subtle facial expressions and the question "did he really say belongs?" As much of a shock the information was to Toranga, Mariko's reaction was more of denial and disbelief. This will no doubt begin to alter how Mariko views the Jesuits.
Great video hun as always!!! can not wait for e3 to see what happens next. i really like the part of e2 when blackthorn tells Toranaga about how he made it there and that japan belonged to Portuguese. the look on Toranaga face!!!!
Yea that was my favorite scene, yhe look on Toranaga & Marko's face was telling. She now has to question her whole belief system in the catholic church.
@@JeremyIceAndFire33yes Mariko statement earlier in the episode about testing her faith may prove hard than she thinks after what blackthorn said. wonder what she will do about the priest she was so fond of?
Good to see they are digging deep into the actual novel on the background and characters. I always thought the novel was much richer than the 1980 film.
By this point Blackthorn is telling others he is a "Guest" of Toranaga, seeing himself as an emissary or ambassador. The best segment in episode 2 was when Mariko tells Blackthorn to address her as Mariko-Sama - a non-subtle to reminder that he is "lower than dirt." And of course the Gaijin is too dumb to understand.
Dear, Jeremy, you made a perfect background explanation and review in the best way! 👍👍👍👌💖💖💖 Thank you so very much! In fact, both episodes are incredibly well done in every detail, indeed in the smallest detail to make us switch back in time to the feudal age of Japan. As you said - I also can't wait for the next third episode to be enjoyed! I love the Japanese culture and the mindset of the society we can only find in the people of Japan! I give 9/10! The efforts and the footage deserve all credit from us followers of this excellent series!
Thanks for the kind words 🙏 I too am fascinated with the Japanese culture & the shows commitment to authenticity. Working on a project like this is a dream job.
Thanks - one minor observation - Friar Domingo of the Sacred Order of St. Francis was a minor hero from the novel Shōgun by James Clavell who was jailed by the Japanese Christian’s at the request of the jesuits. I believe Domingo was Spanish which is why he and Blackthorn spoke Spanish in the prison.
Friar Domingo was Spanish. He himself mentioned that he was a conquistador who spent many years in South America. He went to Japan from Manila. The Spanish had a trade relation with Japan. They took the silver from Mexico to Manila, bought whatever would sell in Japan, trade in Japan, and return to Acapulco via North Pacific.
They raided Spanish, not Portuguese, settlements. Blackthorne ship came around the Maghelan straits, went up north together with 4 other ships along the western coast of South America, and then went west directly to Japan.
In the book Ishido is anti foreigner/christian Blackthorne is a potentially useful weapon against them , he's only really paying lip service to the Christian Daimyo at the moment once he defeats Toranaga he will probably turn on them .
Cause although their countries are technically enemies, Father Martin is still an honest man. That & with Mariko also in the room, she would've known if he lied.
I’m kind of confused while watching the show. Could you please help me understand. The Portuguese are catholic and I thought lady Mariko is catholic as well, along with the guy on the council? So why does blackthrone and the others mention them as christians? Thanks in advance!!
Technically Catholics are Christians. Christianity has different branches, one branch is the Catholics & another branch is Protestant but they're both Christian religions. The Portuguese represent the Catholic side of Christianity & Blackthorne represents the Protestant side.
In 1600, no Japanese knew of the Reformation. To them, there were only Christians. And the Catholics did not accept that Protestants were Christians; they were heretics. So, to everyone in Japan at that time, except Blackthorne and his ten surviving shipmates, there were only Christians, people believed in Jesus and practiced this set of religious rituals. In fact, later in the book, Mariko used the term Catholic. To those who heard that expression, it was evidence that Blackthorne had poisoned her mind. The word Catholic implied that there were two churches in the Christian world. To Protestants of 1600, Catholics were Christians; they just belonged to a corrupt church. Blackthorne's job was to survive, not to explain to the Japanese the Reformation. Your question reflects a mentality that evolved later, after everyone accepted Protestantism as an equal branch of Christianity.
hey just a quick question, why did toranaga agree to send john to prison? ishido was ready to execute him so how would that create a divide between the catholic regents?
That question crossed my mind as well. Toranaga seemingly wanted to use Blackthorne to sew division but didn't hesitate to lock him up. Maybe it was Toranaga's way of convincing Ishido that he didn't have any interest in Blackthorne when Ishido asked what Toranaga wanted with him. But yea the motivation there wasn't 100% clear
@@JeremyIceAndFire33 So Toranaga believes Blackthorne can be used to create delay in the impeachment vote by sowing discontent on the Council. But I was a bit confused as to how Blackthorne would sow such division. Yes, the two Catholic regents would want him dead, as they are in bed with the Jesuits, but why would Ishido not hesitate to order his execution immediately especially since he didn't know his true value until later during his conversation with Yabushige? And in fact he did order his execution anyway.
After re-watching the ep, I figure Toranaga, being a very shrewd tactician, may have anticipated that Ishido would eventually find out (from a traitor like Yabushige) that Blackthorne is an enemy of Portugal, has a ship and many weapons, and would see value in the pilot as someone he needs to war with the Catholic regents after Toranaga is dead. This would put him at odds with the Catholic regents. Of course, it didn't work out as Ishido ordered the execution anyway to facilitate the impeachment vote but it all demonstrates Toranaga's cunning. Sorry for the rambling on and hope this makes sense!
In the book, Toranaga was a man who had great thirst for knowledge. Blackthorne was the first European he got his hands on and therefore a great source of knowledge. Toranaga NEVER had any intention killing Blackthorne. Toranag knew of this Franciscan priest for a long time. One reason he sent Blackthorne to prison was to let Blackthorne get some information out of this priest. Toranaga knew the history of bad blood between the Jesuits and Franciscans. How could Blackthorne divide the Catholic regents? Blackthorne's ship far outgun anything the Portuguese had and could destroy their trade in East Asia. The Catholic regents and the Catholic church naturally needed this trade. Blackthorne's very presence was a huge threat to this setup. But Blackthorne came with a small number of survivors, not enough to crew his powerful warship. What would happen if Blackthorne get his ship repaired, provisioned, staffed with a samurai crew? If Toranaga died, or lost the upcoming war, all his samurai would become ronin, Neh?
@waichui2988 is correct, the Anjin was sent to prison to hopefully gain knowledge from the Franciscan friar who was prisoner but also to hopefully keep him safe from Catholics who wanted the Anjin dead. Also, there was no maid assassin in the novel. Don't know why this was necessary to the series. But anyway...So far not a terrible series.
At 8:10, the Portuguese didn’t sign a treaty to divide “ownership” of half the world, but to have exclusivity of TRADE with the new regions. Of course a Nation with 1 million people could never conquer half the world. Also the Macau base was not “secret” it was negociated with China. Japan didn’t know thats not Portugal fault they decided to isolate themselves from the universe. @@matchlesspixie6643 the English and Dutch were equally if not more ruthless, history is well known.
