Hiroyuki Sanada is such a charismatic actor, too bad that Hollywood often gave him a role that somehow overshadowed by another character, even when his character is placed on the front of the poster like Mortal Kombat Scorpion
Glad that when he choose to take his role more further here with becoming the producer of this series, audiences did a great positive response

they didn't just speak Japanese. Sanada made sure they have people to help them to speak the actual court language of Japan at the time, which is very different than modern Japanese. It's like all of them speaking in Shakespearean English. Also the costume, mannerism, it's just like a NHK Taiga drama. This is so impressive that most Japanese are enjoying this production.

All this attention to detail but then they kinda ruin the illusion when they keep mentioning being fluent in portuguese, etc, but carry on talking in english. They even have portuguese actors in some of the roles and don't take advantage of it. I get why they did it that way, but still, it's a shame.

@@numberoftheword that was actually confusing af - he asks the translator how she got so good in Portuguese and then I was like, are they SUPPOSED to be speaking in Portuguese? rodrigues speaking with a spanish accent and then john speaking with a heavy English accent kinda contradicts them supposedly speaking Portuguese, unless that was intentional to let the audience know the characters are from Spain and England. but then John speaks to the other English sailors from the boat in English and there's no mention of him supposedly switching to Portuguese when speaking to any of the Japanese characters. the only way I could justify it is that john was just asking her how her Portuguese got so well with English being an unmentioned language she knows as well...tbh I'm still not sure if they were supposed to be speaking in English or Portuguese.
great show nonetheless but ya, this was hella throwing me off.

@@jyrrin so there's a movie technique that the first time I saw them do it is in the mummy. So it's a way to let people know that this person is speaking at different language, but it removes the need for subtitles. So the camera will zoom in real close to the person. Speaking of different language, so in this case Japanese and then it will slow. It was zoom in and we will start to hear them speak English and as it zooms out they start speaking English where we can understand. This technique is to show that we are hearing this character speak English, but they're actually speaking in their original language in this case Japanese. It is a very subtle but effective way to express someone speaking to different language but us the viewer are hearing English. I love the interpreter because her being there lets you know that hey, even though we may hear tanagas speaking english, he's actually speaking Japanese and that language barrier is still there. So I know it seems confusing but that's why you have to pay attention.

I love how they handle the language in this and not just the period accurate Japanese. There's a scene where the Jesuit translates for Sanada's daimyo and Blackthorne is naturally distrustful of him misconstruing his words. But as they all develop a modicum of trust, the show edits out the translator and the dialogue between Blackthorne and Sanada just flows as if it were a natural conversation. Reminded me of what John McTiernan did in 13th Warrior

It wasn't the first, but it did set a new standard for what you can showcase and discuss within fantasy or historical fiction in live action entertainment....especially with medieval influences. Plus, it did help personify that we don't need to just rely on one-shot big budget Hollywood movies to tell epic stories. Hate to say it, but that concept is going to be around for awhile until the next BIG epic series "Dethrones" it. prove me wrong.

I am loving the new adaptation, but don't dismiss the original mini-series out of hand. It was filmed on location in Japan using special built locations as well as using some of the historical buildings. The acting was great and it was groundbreaking in the use of having coordination with the Japanese film crews along with American. The music may be a little dated and of course the cameras were not to the level they may be now, but it was and still is a masterpiece. Also, the masterful performances of John Rhys-Davies as Rodriguez and the legendary Toshiro Mifune as Toranaga are hard to match.

It was made for tv so the budget wasn't as good as what films got and it was tv for all audiences rather than like cable series which include violence, sex, drug use, cursing, etc. I was a young girl when Shogun came out, so I didn't really watch it, but saw it later after reading the book. Quite frankly, it was great, but it had too much to sqieeze in for too little time, so the pacing was off. The book was over 1000 pages. Maybe 1200. That's a lot to squeeze in to a few hours.

Feudalism in medieval Europe was also basically just organized crime families sanctioned by the Church. When for whatever reason modern-day rule of law isn't present, it just seems to be filled in by these kind of hierarchical structures based on the ability to inspire the loyalty of ruthless killers.

My favorite part of the show so far: You get the vibe feudal Japan didn't fuck around. There's a reason Japan pushed back the Mongols and laid waste to Korea. These dudes hard as hell. However, it's not overly romanticized like many Western depictions of Japan/samurai.

When is there going to be big series or film about Yasuke the first foreign Samurai, who was vital to the First Emperor of Japan and helped formulate Japan as a country, who was black. Japan has buried this history because they don’t want to admit a Black dude was vital to formulation of Japan and western media and historians ignore him because he isn’t a white hero. So knowing this true epic story Hollywood has ignored, makes me not want to give anything chance about old Japan with European inserted into the story when I know a more epic story exists is being ignored.
I feel the same about world war movies now too after Hollywood loves to whitewash the second and first world wars. Like Dunkirk where there was not a single person of colour in that movie when real records show there was so many Indians there during that battle. During the First World War more Indians fought than British, yet in all the first world war movies with the exception 1917 show Indian soldiers. The Bridge Over The Kwai not a single black face even thought the real war in Burma battles during the 2nd world war the majority of the soldiers were black African soldiers.
The I read the book called Another Man’s War about Britain recruiting African soldiers during the Second World War to prevent Japan invading all their Asian colonies including India and I have never read a more epic true story about the world war 2 and I was actually angry Hollywood had never made a series or film about this epic true story and realised why, because the hero black and Asian and and not white

@@kingbullyrock8739 Japan didn’t exist before Yasuke, after his time it was one country and he helped create it. Williams Adams did nothing near that important as he didn’t create Japan, he is just a white avatar for western appropriation and Asian fetishism. So we get endless films and shows about him. Like when Bruce Lee made the show Kung Fu and wanted to star in it and they said he could star in his own show about Chinese art of Kung Fu because white people want to see themselves as the heroes all the time, so cast a white guy to be kung fu master, or Bass Reeves the famous Marshall and when they made the story of his life they white washed it and he became the Lone Ranger. White people do this all the time burying the achievements of people of colour and appropriate them as their own achievements. Yasuke predates Adam arrival 30 years ago and in that time he fights wars that lead to the creation of Japan. Objectively he is more important to Japanese history than Adams, but Adams whiteness gets him more coverage in the white bias western media and culture

He probably thinks Larry Bird is the GOAT the NBA Michael Jordan was a bench warmer, because it will help his fragile ego. The concept of bouncers didn’t exist in 16th century Japan. So don’t listen to his white racist stereotypes. He was the right hand man of the most powerful man in Japan at the time so he was said to be the best Samurai in the country and his war efforts, because bodyguards are not sent to lead wars as Yasuke did, led to the creation of Japan. His time in Japan coincides with the unification of Japan. Williams comes after that time.Don’t listen to his nonsense.

I am intrigued by the show and the visuals are certainly impressive and modern (for whatever that’s worth… not much imo some things I absolutely love others bore me… just not a fan of modern CGI🤷‍♂️). Those lenses with all that distortion are a puzzling choice to me. Love the lighting/dynamic range we’ve come to expect from these types of productions.
I’m disappointed by all the changes to the story and characters. I’m choosing to be patient and allow them to do whatever it is they’re trying to do here, but Toranaga, Ishido, Blackthorne, Yabu (even changed his name for some reason), Omi and especially Mariko are all different people that what we get in the book and the miniseries.
I suspect this is their attempt to modernize this story. But this is a story set in feudal Japan. There are things that just wouldn’t have been in that setting. I’m hoping they don’t go too far.
Some things feel like they were messed with just because. The original fishing village “Anjiro” was changed to “Ajiro.” Why?
I assume there’s a good reason. It’s getting critical acclaim. So I’m intrigued. Curious where this goes. The score (if you can call it that) falls flat in the way that is so common today. No dynamics, just droning on and on. I get that’s just a fashion thing so I guess it’s ok. The miniseries had very late 70s, tv western music that didn’t age well either.
As a fan of the book who grew up watching the original miniseries, I was so excited. Now I’m on the fence but still hopeful. If this ends up being its own thing but still good, I’ll be happy with that.
