Movie was great and very unsettling. I think the lack of current politics was smart. If they just made this movie about Trump being Hitler or Biden being a commie it would have distracted the core message which is war is insane. I hear so many people talking about civil war now like it is cool. The snipers said it best “he is shooting at us and we are shooting at him.”
America wouldn’t survive a civil war as a country because we have to many outside enemies that’ll take advantage of our disunity like Russia, China, Isis, Al queada etc.

I think everyone in America needs to watch this movie, if only just to show WHY we should NEVER have an internal war amongst ourselves. Yes there are all these rumors of civil war, but this is a prime example of why this should never happen.

Actually, knowing how society seems to not heed the warnings of science fiction, I'd say a civil war is more likely after the release of this film. It's doing the work of making the idea mainstream.

I haven't seen this movie yet, but I figure it's a "be careful what you wish for" cautionary tale for those who openly call for civil war in America. What violence media shows us from other countries are sanitized versions of what could happen here.

The movie isn't what people think it's about. It's not about civil war. It's about Kirsten Dunst's character and her PTSD of coming to the realization of why she does what she does and how she has "lost herself". The civil war is just there. The mirror of her and the younger photographer and her path is the key. The marketing is off.
Not making this movie about some sort of culture war or left vs right was such a brilliant decision.
The studio probably wasn’t psyched when they heard that but the most interesting story isn’t that sensationalist bullshit. There’s a way deeper message at the core here for every American to ponder.
having a movie that's right vs left doesn't make it lacking in depth. There are tons of good movies out there that are social commentaries. In fact, that message war is bad is itself a political message. Now movies don't have to be controversial and talk about current events, but if you're making a movie about a modern day American civil war at this time in American history I think you're missing the potential of your premise.

I guess what I’m mostly trying to say is that the social commentary at play in civil war got more to the crux of the fundamental issue facing American politics which is would we unite against fascism or let our differences blind us to the ultimate threat? What would that look like? How many unforeseen twists would that horrific rabbit hole take?
@@bigpictureguys8415 but who is fascist and what is fascism? If we can't define these terms then uniting against it doesn't really make much sense. It's all kind of nebulous when you're not specific. And if you're too vague then you're not really saying anything. I just don't think it should have been called civil war and taken place in america. If you want to create something like Star wars that's fine or Indiana Jones were the bad guys are obviously bad and it's not really described with their motives are you can make an entertaining film just not a poignant one.

@@bigpictureguys8415 I think parts of it were pretty analogous to what's going on now and I think those parts are good and live up to the premise. However the California Texas alliance just doesn't make sense with what we know about America is there something different about this America than our own in which case I think that does need to in some way be explained. Just as the civil war itself is explained by a president trying to obtain power if we just had a dictator president in America but that wasn't explained I think the audience would be justifiably confused don't you? If there's something radically different about the United States as you're presenting you shouldn't ignore it.
Idont think it matters which side or who but illustrate what a civil war would look like. Showing how awful it would be it we allowed ourselves to devolve into chaos and war with each other,
I felt that the choreography, sound design and the set design for this film were the shine star of this film. All avengers jokes aside, this movie isn’t for everyone. This is not science fiction, this is not comic book based fantasy. This is close to a horror film. And some just aren’t ready for that.
I’m desensitized to this type of stuff 😅. But I throughly enjoyed it. THAT scene with Jesse Plemons made EVERYONE in the theater sit there in shock. But apart from that, I really enjoyed seeing the social commentary on ageism between Lee and Jessie and Sammy. These Older journalists got pretty rigid and have a hard time really supporting these younger people trying to develop their career. And I really like Joel’s character too when it comes to journalists and having to be in the eye of this storm. And how people process grief. I felt this movie wasn’t as good as Dune but it’s up there. Low full price, high matinee from me. And yes I saw it in imax. Absolutely groundbreaking sound
It's Cannon Film Group Bullshit dolled up to look Prestigious. You want to avoid Polotics, set it in a fictional country. You want to set it in America but still avoid Federal Polotics? Make up parties like The Founding Fathers from The Purge. You want to also ignore Regional politics too, FUCK OFF!
The funniest part about this movie to me was that the most unbelievable aspect of this movie is just Texas and California teaming up in the first place! 😂😂

There are many many veterans, and random ppl with guns are in the US with skills. People are just hung up on real life politics or red vs blue in the US like baseball teams smh. In actuality multiple people could want to fight on certain side of a war for multiple reasons.
A critique on journalism without a critique on capital isn't effective especially in the background of a civil war.

With that it’s not hard to fill in the blanks of literally any question one might have. Trivial right vs left petty grievances fall by the wayside in the face of real fascism.
Texas & California teaming up makes complete sense in that context. They both have huge independent GDP’s, populations, military & geographical capabilities built in, and populations with state pride.

I don’t know about the “military capabilities” of either state. They don’t have armies, air forces, or navies to speak of.

*spoilers* the cinematography was tremendous. My biggest gripe was with Jessie’s character. She’s literally the reason why all the familiar characters die. Her character arch is never explained. She goes from throwing up in the back of the car to taking pictures of people who are literally dying trying to save her and getting in the way in a matter of 10 minutes of screen time. Other than that this is an interesting watch. I wish they explained more of the war and the effects. Someone mentions how much more valuable the Canadian dollar is than USD because of the war and stuff like that would’ve been interesting to delve into.

I really appreciated Stephen Henderson’s (Thurfir the Mentat) role here. He was still the risk calculator but had a more active role. The elder Man went out like a legend.
I hope we get a directors cut of Dune. I heard Thufir Hawat had a more scenes/active role but they cut a lot of the parts that Stephen Henderson was in. . Yeah, he saved their asses and went out like a hero.
There was some genuinely shocking and great scene's and despite it not being perfect it's definitely a film that's going to stick with me for awhile

Im so glad i didnt watch any of the trailers and only knew the logline going in. Ever since I walked out of the theater Ive heard so many reviewers and found whatever criticisms interesting to hear but i do feel everything is on purpose. Considering how easy it would be to pick a side narratively in order to flesh out the conflict more, I feel its specifically designed to be in the periphery, distant enough to keep you focusing on the effects of a civil war rather than why it came to be. It allows the viewer to attach whatever political narrative they want, personal or otherwise, to what's happening around the characters. By doing that, It reinforces the ultimate cautionary tale and message on a different level that it doesnt matter whose side your on, that we should all aim to work together peacefully, cuz even if you think you want this, you dont.

I definitely thought it was. Movie was trash and boring. A24 truly dropped the ball adding their name to this project. I love all of A24s movies and how different and unique they are. This movie was not it. It just follows a photographer around taking shots of a rural America. Was not interesting at all

The characters I think are well done. And get that the movie is being politically neutral. But Martin has a point that it’s hard to get into it because I’m scratching my head thinking: how did this happen, what was the war fought over, if the wf is in the south near Texas and California while the US is further north. Then why are all are these towns in US territory so abandoned. Where did the people go. The movie is when you’re watching it in the moment, but if you start to think about it more and more it starts to come apart.

I cannot in good concious say that the trailers did a better job in exploring what this film presents than the actual film. The trailers did all the work in teaching us more of this situation than the movie as this is where exposition scenes matter to give more context

It was cool but couldve been better. Yall mentioned Saving Private Ryan, I wish it couldve been more like that- a great mix of Drama and Action.
There is NO WAY that the end battle scene was compared to the beginning ICONIC scene of Saving Private Ryan.

If you're on the right, you're probably going to take the wrong message, and this movie is going to piss you off. If you're on the left, you're probably going to take the wrong message and this movie is going to piss you off. If you think that is movie is going to validate your point of view, or if you think this movie is going to be antithetical to your point of view, it's going to piss you off.
That being said, I think it's a movie that every American NEEDS to see. There are still WAY too many people that are literally hoping for this sort of thing to come to pass ( mostly because they are certain that once the dust settles, they will be the ones in power), and I think that the movie is a visceral look at what it would really mean to have people slaughtering other people. The Gravy Seals love to talk tough but want to forget the humanity of other people, while the Ivy League wrings their hands over the state of things but can't be bothered to act outside of updating their Facebook status. BOTH sides, and everybody in between needs to be reminded of what is really at stake.
(And the idea of a California/Texas coalition really isn't that fanciful - there are more anti-goverment types outside of L.A. than you might think, and if a president illegally declared themselves in power for a 3rd term, I really think you'd see MORE states want to secede than we had in the film, red or blue)

They were trying to hammer home the "war is bad" message so giving the audiences sides they could use to justify the carnage would be counter to getting that across.
Because a lot of times in civil wars, peoples have these ideologies what they think will be a better world for their country and eventually they just become as crappy as the people they were taking down.
So fucked up at my theatre some parents brought a kid to that film who was no older than six.

Given the subject matter, the intention to stay as 'apolitical' as possible & well utilised $50m production budget & $20m marketing budget, I thought all its audience score metrics esp CinemaScore would be interesting to track especially as Alex Garland's movies typically don't have high audience scores with Ex Machina being the only one of the 4 movies he's both written & directed that both critics & audiences have loved! Currently has a B- CinemaScore, 77% RT (3.9/5), 76% PostTrak, 6.2/10 Metacritic & 7.6/10 IMDB audience ratings, so looks ok but not great overall in terms of its box office legs.
I think the fact that it doesn't take sides is more effective for the viewer. It's stating and showing that reasons or sides do not matter because the horrors of war reach everyone all the same, no matter your beliefs. Brother killing brother. And as viewers, we're almost the everyday citizens caught in the middle as we're entering this situation much like some state or city who simply found themselves caught in the crossfire because of some strategic advantage their location offers.
Also, thinking about how Kirsten Dunst's Lee seems like an analog for the typical voyeuristic American who's cold and apathetic towards war until it hits home and gets personal then she's thrown fully into it in a way she's unprepared for. Her and her friends are threatened then her mentor dies and she loses her composure and can't even carry on with what feels routine.
Then you have young Jesse who gradually loses empathy as she's inundated with the imagery of death so much that it just becomes normal.
Old dude Sammie as the older generation who tries to impart knowledge and give warnings, and is ultimately right but ignored. He's lived through it in many different ways. He even has a line when they're in that town with the shop that almost seemed like he called out Lee's shock at the people watching on top of the building as her whiteness protecting her and how he thinks this has always been the norm, like he's had to deal with it in many ways.
The dialog tells you exactly what the movie is about, it does lead you to make assumptions but it's not hard to imagine why California and Texas would come together. Jesse's character arc could easily be missed if you don't pay attention to her shock moment, once you do everything else makes sense in the end. It's an amazing movie, incredibly well done and worth the watch.
Also, something to note is that California and Texas are far more politically representative of each other than they let on through the surface. California has a ton of red districts and has historically been at the forefront of political unrest, with movements even turning violent. It just so happens that the major population zones of California are liberal, which tilts its scales in elections. Something else to remember is that during the peak of western settlements, a lot of racists and bigots made their way out west and into California. In the 1920s, places like Oregon were hotbeds for Klan activity and they spread like wildfire there. So, all that to give a little context as to why Texas and California might form an alliance.
This movie was less about making a philosophical point than it was invoking feelings for me.
I felt a variety of very complex sticky emotions that went beyond anything the movie itself spelled out in its plot or dialogue. For that I have to give it a VERY high full price.
There were about 2 things that happened plot wise that held it back from being a better than sex for me but with time I could see myself getting over those and going even higher in my book.
The movie definitely avoided these modern political issues that we see today on purpose. I don’t Alex garland wanted it to be social commentary that turned out to be this liberal or conservative agenda but to invoke the feelings these journalists were feeling along this “suicide mission” Sammy was talking about
I think the Writer/Director took the easy A Political way out of writing about the Civil War because he's British and didn't want the people giving him money to be mad at him. This is basically Capitalizing on Civil Unrest while hedging bets on who's gonna win.

There was a lot that this movie could have delved into as the reasons for a civil war. None of that was mentioned except that the current POTUS was on his 3rd term. This just became a very violent road trip by 4 journalists from NYC to DC with lots of random, violent situations thrown in. Even at the end, the WF and other rebel forces had all the tanks, attack helicopters and missiles while the defending Federal Forces had none? How is that possible that the US Army had no tanks or Apache copters left to defend the White House or didn't evacuate the President to a safer location?
That was confusing, for sure!
I seen this weekend not enough details to fake and a lot shooting with no explanations to fictional. I know it’s a fictional movie, but if you’re gonna be something off America and having a Civil War that make it realistic.

The first half of this movie reminded me of Matt Stone and Trey Parker's story structure comments.
It was very much a story where the words "and then" go between a lot of the story beats, as opposed to a story where "therefore" or "but" would go between the various interludes that occur during the driving section of the movie.

Loved the movie, but it would have been better as a 2 or 3 season show. Would have loved small pastiches photographing and learning about people caught in the war and how it has affected them. That would have given it a grounding, character driven context that would have gone a long way.

Been anticipating this review so much and honestly just the reception for this movie in general (almost more than the movie itself). Especially given it’s tackling a touchy subject and during election season.
By not picking a side, it said nothing.
Not to turn away some audience members, they used bread crumbs to tie it to real events today. References to "MAGA", "Antifa", "China", "Enemy of the People" (the press), are scattered throughout. Attacks on civilian cities (as threatened), nice things about Hitler (mass graves), are all bread crumbs. They did this to make the ties intentionally vague, and to keep the focus on the journalists. Great movie. Classic.
Malcom X said, "The chickens coming Home to roost" I believe most Americans understand the murder, death, kill...their government has spread across the world for decades.... the fact that any American can say this movie doesn't feel real, is literally because the fact they never were a victim of the Murder Death Kill American War Machine. There is a very specific reason why this movie is apolitical.....because both parties in America has been complicate in committing Murder Death Kill throughout the world. That being said I liked the movie. I understand why Americans wouldn't like it, because if it happened in their backyard, it feels different. Peace ✌🏾 ❤

The movie wasn't that great. I'd give it a rental. The "civil war" aspect of it feels like just a hook to get the movie made. The movie was about the war photographers. You could make up a country and tell the same story. But the the characters are so bland and uninteresting. You have to do one or the other, give me good world building or give me good characters. The movie does neither well.
The ending battle is very good but everything else was mid. Also the only photographer that has any common sense is Lee. Without going into spoilers, the other photographers would have been gone with their bone headed decisions.

I think the problem with this movie and in effect Alex Garland who directed it is that it is trying to be neutral and ends up not having a cohesive, thoughtful point. Alex Garland made some comments bout the movie When it premiered at SXSW earlier this year, saying that “left and right, just to be clear about it, are ideological arguments about how to run a state. That’s all they are. They are not a right or wrong, in terms of good and bad.” But that's simply not true, if it ever was.
You could have maybe done a both side take on things around the early to late 2000s but the political climate has clearly changed. There is only one side calling for a “civil war.” There is only one side stoking hatred by spreading conspiracy theories about the Great Replacement. There is only one side boosting baseless and widely debunked theories that elections are rigged. There is only one side whose presidential candidate is promising a “bloodbath” if he loses the election. Even Alex Garland using video from someone like Andy Ngo for this film, whos documented as not only lying about left leaning people but has ties to Nazi and White supremacist groups and has even given a list of real journalists to said groups, leaves a lot of ignorance on Garlands part and a very outdated and narrow view of what RIght and Left is now in America

Neutrality is not the same as objectivity. The problem with neutrality is that in some cases, neutrality favors the oppressor. Like, what exactly is the neutral perspective of the Holocaust or slavery?
That's the problem with the fallacious golden mean "enlightened centrism" BS ideology that is infused with this film, acting like it's above it all when in reality, it's just dishonest to the truth and reality and tries to create a middle ground between two sides that are not equally bad. All it does is give false credence to the obviously worse side.
Because it forces this unrealistic neutrality, none of the stakes of the films or the motivations make sense. Civil wars happen for reasons but we're not given any for the civil war that the film takes it's name from.

The fact of the matter is, a democratic president is responsible for funding a genocide. I agree there is a worse side, but things are not black & white. And if your goal is to address the issue of the polarization of current politics, attacking a side is not how you go about it. Also, the entire point of the film is about the nature of war, not the specifics of our current day.

I saw it in 4DX RPX. During the shootouts fog and smoke would arise and fill the theater. The seats would shake from left and right up and down while they were running or in a car chase.

This movie reminded of Apocolypse Now. (AN)..as Colonel Kutz was to the final mission, the white house was the final stop at the end of the river. The press SUV was equvilant to the boat piloted by the chief petty officer in the AN....and we the audience were like Charlie Sheen;s character. in AN..as the film progressed, it became darker and more dangerous like AN...Civil War was brillant..

Frankly, I thought the movie was kind of lacking in back-story and exposition. Also, the young girl as a photojournalist got on my nerves. She was just a little too much; too much getting in the way, endangering herself, endangering others, getting the Kirsten Dunst character killed, etc. Like she didn't have enough common-sense to keep her head down.
Yeah I really kinda just don't like journalists now. Kinda forgot about the whole war thing in the background.
dudes in the Hawaiian shirts were probably a reference to the boogaloo boys
Wagner Moura's character had a notepad and pen in a couple of scenes.
I enjoyed it overall. I had to chuckle how they threw Florida under the bus immediately in the intro.
I was annoyed by the young photographer....but I think that was the point....that ending....🤐

That ending was the only unsatisfying part of the movie…. The young photographer! But I guess that is the point to be a photographer in war zone.

I really wanted to love it but I just couldn't, mostly because of the decision making by some of the characters and how the story flowed and how some scenes were staged and blocked doesn't work given the supposed realistic "premise" and I don't mind the deliberate incoherence of the worldbuilding that's mostly fine, it reminded a bit of an old german film called Circle of Deceit
I had a similar feeling to when I first saw Man of Steel, where action and visuals are great but everything else is a bit iffy and It being something I thought I always wanted , then I realized nah I kinda don't
Same with this,ever since playing that Mass Effect 2 DLC and one level in Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 I always wanted to how a second American Civil War would play out but now not so much
Ultimately the good outweighs the bad but it's a shame it was held back by some what really felt like unforced errors in the writing.

I saw this movie a couple of days ago. I can't get it out of my head!
In the movie, President Ron Swanson has closed the FBI and opted to stay on for a 3rd Term. Though he is not a copy of any current SINGLE President... he's a future version of a Trumpist politician. Let's not ki ourselves. The movie does a great job of mixing up the factions, so it it doesn't directly parallel the way that our current political climate would look like if it fractured into open hostility. The movie, with its focus on the journalists, rather the political background, was made carefully and deliberately, and is very character focused. It is ultimately a great choice and makes the movie much more powerful. You almost feel like the journalists are in a foreign country, until it can't be ignored that this is the United States.

Personally speaking as a photojournalist, I loved the film. I felt like the war itself wasn't really a glimpse of the future, but more of a reflection of how we behave in the world right now. Especially with all the war that's going on, how most people pretend it doesn't exist because it doesn't inconvenience them.
The film was pretty much saying war photographers elevate themselves on the corpses of those they take pictures of. But also acknowledging the importance it is to capture these horrific moments, since they exist to remind us of the inhumanity that exists in the world. The movie itself isn't just about the images, or the Wikipedia pages, but what's left off the pages.
Movie was good, but didn’t go far enough. Needed more ‘Purge’ level of anarchy.

There's so much to talk about, but overall, there was really only one complaint I had. ** Spoiler Alert ** It was pretty stupid how Lee died. Not the fact that she died, or why she did it, but that over-exaggerated pause.
Other than that, the movie was heavy af and the sound was amazing. I already saw it twice, and I'll probably go at least a third time.
This movie was mad good. The hidden message was there too. The funny thing is how far off this movie is from reality. Living around the DC area and seeing the war was captivating. The detail was there. I didn't expect so much photo generalism depth. I did like it.
Same here. I live in Northern VA. Seeing Northwest DC getting lit up in an urban warfare firefight was crazy.
So let me get this straight.
- The movie is called "Civil War".
- The movie was marketed on the civil war.
- The Civil war part is what most people come to see the movie for.
- The parts with the civil war is the best parts.
Yet they barely show, focus on, explain or dedicate time to the civil war aspect and instead mostly focus on a small group of characters no one came to see?
What is this? Godzilla 2014?
If they truly believed that their story could stand on its own without misleading audiences then they would have just called it "War Reporter", but right now it feels like they are cashing in on the political divide in the country by marketing the movie like this even if the movie itself is ok.
I am glad the movie didn't make the civil war a result of the current political climate since it makes the movie more timeless, but they could still have explored the civil war a bit more and have it be a cautionary tale for future generations.

They could have made it as simple as Robots. One side likes em, other side hates them. Otherwise the only take away is "War is bad, M'Kay. Except for the Revolutinary War.... and the first Civil War.... and World War 2."

The civil war is shown throughout the movie. It’s just you don’t get the details or whose side you are encamped with. Go watch the movie.
Funny though the 2014 Godzilla is probably the best American Godzilla movie by a good bit

I saw this movie in 4d( my first 4d movie). Really good movie. I know this isn't a "war" movie, but i wish they would have explained how the war got started. More importantly i wish they would have explained how the hell Texas and California joined forces. You know stuff has to be bad for those two to get along.
Another movie with great sound is The First Slam Dunk. It makes you feel like you're there. Also it's up there with the very best of sports movies

I expected to see A24's take on a blockbuster war movie but I'm pleasantly surprised. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. It's a modern day war film set in US soil (in an alternate timeline) instead of being set in a far away country. Yeah, it's another "war bad" movie and it's overdone at this point. But, I think having it set in a possible future makes it different enough.
People are horrible. The one thing stopping hell from breaking loose and people showing how evil they are is the civil authroity. Once that breaks down, people are free to show what's deep within themselves
This movie was terrifying. The ending was not believable, but outside of the end, this was one of the best movies ever.
I did think that was Pedro Pascale, at first.

You didn't mention Alex Garland's directorial debut which he also wrote, Ex Machina. Up there as one of his best.
Watched this film last night and screamed at the theater when the big guy used his truck to hit the 2 dude. I screamed out " YEEEEAAAAH GET THAT MOTHERFUCKER!!!"
