For me, as a huge history buff, this scene with the depiction of the Spanish and Portuguese zones of control is amazing. It showed very well what superpowers Spain and Portugal were in the 16th century after the Treaty of Zaragoza in 1529.

Here in Brazil, its a basic school lesson (one side portuguese, the rest of america as spanish, and british, duchts and french as "invaders"). But we never study about the Tordesilas line on other side of the globe, because Portugal loosing control from indian ocean soon. So rarelly here they mention about portuguese in Japan (and i'm japanese descendant).

At the time when Portugal, Spain, and England tried to colonize Japan, Japan already had a high literacy rate, even among the lower classes.

      @@aloneahamo
We never colonised Japan, nor did we even attempt to. Well, England didn't anyway. Remember that this is set in 1600. England hadn't even set up colonies in North America yet. Jamestown would only be established in like 1610. Japan was just too far away and lacked the natural resources to make colonisation worth it.
Europeans were interested in Japan for trade, not colonisation. Same reason why we never colonised China or Korea. It's way too much effort to colonise a civilized people on the opposite side of the world.
Christianity did spread in Japan, but eventually Christianity was banned and Christians were persecuted and hunted down. Literacy has nothing to do with whether or not you'll accept Christianity. The very nature of Abrahamic religions, especially Christianity and ESPECIALLY Islam makes them spread very quickly, especially among people who don't have a monotheistic religion with strong rules, like the Japanese in 1600 or English people in 700AD.
All non-Japanese and half-Japanese people in Japan were forced to leave the country in 1633.
It's quite likely that the Anjin's children were among the half-Japanese people who were forced to leave Japan.
Japan remained closed until Captain Perry strong-armed the Japanese into opening themselves to trade with the West in 1854.

    • @ew21st23
      @ew21st23 5 месяцев назад +3

At that time, Japan had a large amount of silver, and many merchant ships came from Europe in search of silver, and Japan bought a large amount of weapons. Taiko Hideyoshi dispatched troops to Korea and headed for China in order to keep Spain in check, and he also declared war on the Spanish-controlled Philippines, but the leaders of both countries died and a world war did not materialize.
By the way, even before that, during Nobunaga's time, it was thought that it would be difficult for Portugal to subdue Japan militarily.
Therefore, Portugal had a plan to take advantage of Nobunaga's ambition to expand into mainland China and encourage Christianity to spread to China.

5:25 So, the hair styles. For the Christians, the baldness started as a tribute to Saint Peter, whose head was shaved by people who didn’t believe his teachings about Jesus and wanted to ridicule him. And it just became part of the “uniform” for monks and some clergy. I don’t know if it was ever considered “a nice look”, but especially if it wasn’t, was definitely a sign of piety and commitment if you went for it. It’s a statement, in the most literal way.
As for the samurai we see with half-shaved heads, I think that was more to do with practicality and staying cool when wearing helmets. Once again it’s also a bit of a statement; “yeah, I’m samurai, ready for battle”.

The "dark thoughts" Mariko has confessed to the priest (being a good Catholic, she would go to Confession) are about suicide. Remember, that for the Japanese at this time, suicide is an honourable form of death, (to release them from great shame for example), whereas for the Christians it is a mortal sin. You can see how this would create conflict for Mariko who is essentially Japanese yet trying to be a good Christian. In later episodes you'll discover more of Mariko's family history and maybe understand a little more about what drives her.

Which isn't an issue since they never claimed to depict actual history, rather the feel of it, but it's not a source to learn history. A good stepping stone to get interested in the topic, but that's it.

The "Unless I win" line carries even more weight in the original series. Anjin tells Toranaga that the Dutch fought a war to overthrow their Portuguese overlords. Toranaga says that it is unforgivable to raise a hand to one's rightful rulers, to which Anjin replies "Unless you win". Toranaga is smack in the middle of trying to overthrow his rightful rulers, so naturally he agrees with Anjin.

The reason why TAIKO, who was in his hospital bed, proposed to Toranaga that he should be the "sole regent" was to test Toranaga, and if Toranaga had agreed to be the only regent, he would have been killed for being ambitious. TAIKO also anticipated that Toranaga would decline this proposal, and had prepared a five-person regency. TAIKO was well prepared even on his deathbed.
Historically speaking, TAIKO (Taiko is a job title. Historically, Toyotomi Hideyoshi) was originally from a farming family and became a vassal of Oda Nobunaga, an outstanding genius in Japanese history. There he flourished and rose through the ranks. Toranaga (historically Tokugawa Ieyasu) at that time, like Nobunaga, was a local party leader. Ieyasu was in an alliance with Nobunaga, and to Nobunaga Ieyasu was like his younger brother. In other words, Nobunaga and Ieyasu were each local party leaders, and Hideyoshi was just a vassal of Nobunaga. Nobunaga died one step before unifying Japan. After Nobunaga's death, the positions of Hideyoshi and Ieyasu were reversed.
By the way, Nobunaga's niece had three beautiful sisters. The third daughter survived by marrying Ieyasu's son. The eldest daughter became Hideyoshi's concubine. In other words, Hideyoshi made his former boss's bloodline his concubine. She then gave birth to Hideyoshi's child. He doted on this girl and his only child.

The war (1585-1604) was an intermittent conflict between the Habsburg Kingdom of Spain and the Kingdom of England. It began with England's military expedition in 1585 to what was then the Spanish Netherlands under the command of the Earl of Leicester, in support of the Dutch rebellion against Spanish Habsburg rule.
      1587 The Bateren (Padre) Edict
Toyotomi Hideyoshi, Taikō, got furious when he found out that the Jesuits were selling Japanese abroad as slaves and breaking down Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples in Nagasaki area.

      1596 San Felipe incident
On October 19, 1596, the Spanish ship San Felipe was shipwrecked on Urado in Kōchi en route from Manila to Acapulco in the Manila-Acapulco Galleon Trade. The local daimyō Chōsokabe Motochika who ruled Tosa province seized the cargo of the richly laden Manila galleon, and the incident escalated to Toyotomi Hideyoshi, ruling Taikō of Japan. The pilot of the ship suggested to Japanese authorities that it was the Spanish modus operandi to have missionaries infiltrate a country before an eventual military conquest. This led to the crucifixion of 26 Catholics in Nagasaki. Six Spanish Franciscan missionaries and 20 Japanese Catholics were captured in Osaka and Kyoto, and sent to Nagasaki where they were executed on February 5, 1597. Martino de la Ascencion, one of the 26 Catholics wrote in a letter to the Philippine Governor about his own execution and Hideyoshi's plans to invade the Philippines.

These events, and others that happened later, led to the expulsion of Portugal and Spain from Japan, and the Tokugawa Shogunate, established in 1603, limited entry into Japan to the Protestant Netherlands, which promised not to propagate Christianity in Japan, and the Chinese Qing Dynasty. Japan still was trading with Portugal and Spain through Southeast Asia such as Macao and Manila.
      1612 Tokugawa's Ban on Christianity
Many Christians were exiled to Manila and Macau.
1624 Ban on Spanish ships coming to Japan
Portugal had secured a high share of the transit trade of Chinese silk (in exchange for Japanese silver) to Japan, so it was difficult for the Tokugawa Shogunate to cut off this trade. The Shogunate saw Spain as having stronger Catholic missionary and colonial intentions. Portugal later lost this role to the Dutch and was expelled from Japan in 1639.

The thing about the Priests hair is interesting. IF i remember correctly, they shaved their heads in that pattern because of some belief that their prayers would be more effective if they shaved like that. I guess the hat is no impediment but the hair is?

I think a declining quality show is an issue for a reactors.
First season good, good quality, good engagement and views. But when comes the time to react to s**ty season 3 you end up with a loose-loose dilemma :
Spending time and ressources (watch time, editing, uploads) for low engagement and poor views OR stop reacting stone cold and have an unfinished TV show on the channel playlists (not very appealing)

Have you watched the Australian man democracy manifest video? If you have, try to compare Blackthorn's way of talking to his, especially the part "a succulent chinese meal?" It's very fun

The "our countries are at war" thing is annoying. England and Portugal have NEVER been at war. England and Portugal have been allies since 1386.
