For some reason our Australian copy has worse subtitles than the default US copy, very annoying, sorry for the inconvenience.

Toranaga called out the Catholics immediately to test John's words. He knew they would try to take his life if John was telling the truth and they knew John had talked about Portugese intent to Toranaga. So it proved. He then switched rooms to test for spies. If there was a spy in his houshould then news of the switch would get relayed back to the assassin. That didn't happen, the assassin went to the wrong room where Toranaga was waiting. No spy. Multiple different plays at once by Toranaga. Very smart man and very smart writing.

It's funny that most viewers side with Blackthorne because we're so used to seeing a character in his position as the hero in the story. We mistrust Father Alvito even after he was 100% honest with his translations, has shown us absolutely no reason to distrust him, and we even learn that Blackthorne is indeed a pirate. The journals show that the crew of the Erasmus "sacked, slaughtered and pillaged their way through Manila" yet we still side with the Englishman. On paper he's a horrible human being but the writing is so clever that we're lulled onto his side. Such an fun ride.

I'm kind of wondering at this point, Spartan and Pudgey really are convinced that Toranaga and John are the good guys at this moment, but why exactly do they think that? After all, the evidence the Portuguese have for John plundering and slaughtering settlements is John's own diary. The Portuguese have their own schemes, but Alvito in particular does seem to have some integrity. He translated John's words truthfully, would John have done the same if their roles had been reversed?

Spain considers him a pirate even though they also employ privateers as well.
In Japanese terms, he would be closer to a mercenary which, admittedly, they don't view as having much honor.

    • @jmaitland5709
      @jmaitland5709 Месяц назад +7

@@rossrreyes Not quite, it is a grey area.
On the one hand, he's a privateer in Dutch service, with letters of marque issued by the Dutch government, so in the eyes of the Netherlands he is a legal combatant in their war against Spain.
On the other, as the Netherlands is fighting Spain for it's independence, Spain (and by extension their Portuguese allies) view the Netherlands as just a rebellious province, therefore the Dutch government is not legitimate, and those letters of marque they issued are not valid legal documents. Thus in the eyes of the Spanish and Portuguese he is a pirate.

Exploit is kind of a heavy description. He's there to trade, which the Dutch did without adding any religious entanglements nor any attempts to conquer.

@@corvuslight You are missing a point. During the era of colonialism - every single European nation exploited other nations either through direct conquest or a bunch of unequal treaties. Semantics? Sure, ok, but in this specific case, the Dutch were just seeking trade without the aim of conquest that the Spanish and Portuguese were doing with the aid of religion. One could argue that it's because the Dutch didn't have the power to do so and that if they did have the power, they would. Likely, that would be true.
But there it is. They didn't and therefore weren't looking to exploit, but were in fact looking for fair trade amongst two nations.

0:38 That's great, but it's important not spoil. Did Lady Ochiba even make an appearance in E01? Because if she hasn't, showing her face is spoiling.

Yup, they are brutal. In fact the show only shows a fraction of the capital punishments in the book. Which, in itself, only shows a small fraction of the death orchestrated by Toranaga (Fictional depiction of Tokugawa Ieyasu). Borderline genocidal. A lot of people in the comments call Blackthorne a horrible person for his actions. All I have to say is - Who is more evil, or horrible, the man who follows his orders for Queen and country or the man who gives the orders? Toranaga whilst portrayed as the pseudo protagonist. He is no better than the other Regents - Just more conniving and brutal. Akin to Palpatine from Star Wars just minus the force powers and meglomania.

This isn’t a show that goes heavy on the white savior complex. The Japanese in the 1600’s are the advanced nation. The colonizers do not win in this. It’s heavy on the rich cultural history of Japan and eastern culture. If you think John is here to “tame” and educate Japan you will be disappointed. He’s there to be tamed and humbled.

How is he "poisoning" her mind? You think Blackthorne has come to Japan as a tourist? You think the English have any other reasons to be here as the Portugese? Jez...

For some people (as Pudgey stated in the first video) they don’t follow the show as well as they could because when their eyes are focused on reading they miss out on what is happening on the screen. It is the same actors speaking in the dub version and even then not everything is completely dubbed. Just saying…

@@Big8SirCash the point you made, i give it to you. BUT do i want to to understand, observe and connect everything there is in this show? Or is it even more intruiging and immersive to be a bit like the Anjin, in a foreign country, not getting everything whats going on around you. I think this thoughts surely were considered when making the decision to have so much japanese and translation in this show.

I think I see why I drifted away from this channel. Honestly, I just can't take the black and white logic applied to shows like this. There's the good guy / Spartan's avatar in the show, there's the snake. Everything is reduced to this cartoonish outlook.

interesting you feel this way, while in the moment we get excited over certain characters we discuss in quite some depth in the discussion the nuance behind each characters and their situations as well as learning from insight from comments as we go along. very rarely if ever do we conclude black and white analysis, but in the moment yes we may get excited over certain things and irritated by others.
