I'm not an expert in the language. But I've seen Japanese speakers note that not only are they speaking Japanese, but an archaic form of the language that would belong to that time period. If so - very cool.
hiroyuki sanada said in an interview, it's akin to being in a Shakespeare play
Yes. According to the official podcast there is a sort of game of telephone going on in creating the dialogue. Those lines are written in English by the all American writers and then sent to a translation team in Japan, who are turning the dialogue into modern Japanese. The translations are then passed to a Japanese playwright with a background in writing period pieces who rewrites the lines to use period accurate language. He is working strictly from the translation. The rewritten dialogue then goes to a third team translating back into English for subtitles and to check that the original meaning is preserved.
@@larseich5796 Woah, that's so cool! :)
@@larseich5796as a translator, i am very impressed with this information
As an intermediate learner of Japanese, the way they speak in the show is basically unintelligible for being both so formal and so archaic.
Wasn't sure if anyone else mentioned this, but the whole thing with him not wanting to bathe again is actually because the water quality was so poor in England that bathing too frequently would cause dysentery (the Flux). Of course people in England didn't understand what was actually causing it and just thought the act of bathing itself was the problem
This show does such an amazing job with the historical bits
Another fun fact, almost all of the spoken English in the show is meant to be Portugese, except for when Anjin is cursing, when he is actually speaking English
Toranaga is playing above masters chess. He 10 moves ahead of everyone else.
He is. He is playing everyone and I mean everyone.
@@BrokenNoah lol based on his actions, I'm quite sure he is the true villain. He always use both sides to work for him first, then he reacts on them later. He said he didn't want to be a Shogun but actually he just pretended it. So when the time comes, he would take a Shogun title pretending that's just his move to defend himself. 😂
@@liamlvp3886 oh sht you're onto something and change my whole perspective
"The Society of Jesus" is the official name of the Roman Catholics priest order known as the Jesuits. All Jesuit priests use "S.J." after their names on official documents.
19:19 "The one that just died right?"
Yep. Exactly. That Elizabeth.
We KNOW! lol
@@SeanTanktop She had a good run.
@@JaapZeldenrust-ks9ek damn i cant believe she ruled for 400 years lol
Mariko is beautifull, damn
She was a pop idol in Japan (part of a girl group called Faky)
19:05 The year is set in 1600 so it would be Elizabeth I of England (1533 - 1603).
12:36 "unless he wins" woah
mariko’s face in the thumbnail 😍
Ikr?
@@SeanTanktop crushing BIG time over here lol
Really love the relationship between Torinaga and Kiri, and that Toranaga just casually lets everyone know she has an absolute dump truck ass.
This show is at it's best when it's Blackthorne and Toranaga in a room together. So good!
"Murder Feathers on " .. made me laugh.. because if you didn't already know.. a group of Crows is called "A MURDER of CROWS " .... XD
Toranaga is the coolest guy!
19:05; 😂 Given both the high critical & audience reviews plus high viewership, will be interesting to see if FX tries to get co-showrunners Rachel Kondo & Justin Marks to adapt at least one of James Clavell's other books in his 'Asian Saga' into its own mini-series?! Wanna give a s/o to the 'Max' Tokyo Vice show from Michael Mann & Destin Daniel Cretton which is another good Japanese show atm!
@@Search0Settle So maybe Gai-Jin then as a spiritual successor to Shogun instead of either Tai-Pan or Noble House?!
@@Search0Settle 👍
The Jesuit Order during the Sengoku period in Japan played a significant role in introducing Christianity and Western knowledge to the country. Founded by Ignatius of Loyola in 1540, the Jesuits, or Society of Jesus, were missionaries who aimed to spread Catholicism worldwide. In Japan, they focused on converting local lords and elites, establishing churches, and providing education. They also engaged in cultural exchange, introducing Western science, medicine, and technology. However, their influence was met with resistance from traditional Buddhist and Shinto authorities, leading to persecution and ultimately the expulsion of Christianity from Japan in the early 17th century. Despite this, the Jesuits left a lasting legacy in Japan, with their efforts contributing to the country's early modernization and cultural exchange with the West.
19:40 this actually was news to them at the time, the popular theory was the Earth was square with a domed sky.
very fun, love the bants
7:55 "The Society of Jesus" is actually the official name of the Jesuits.
Best Eastern. Good one.
Morgan put an image of a Dick Peacock in my head, so... Thanks for that, that's a thing I can imagine now.
Haha! Haven Reign saw yall on and yelled at the tv “Hi Sean, Hi Dustin, Hi Morgan! Mommy they’re my friends.” 😂💚💜
Omg get that child off of this channel! lol 😉
@@SeanTanktop Haha, she wasn’t watching yall on her own! Haven Reign has her own YT Kids on her tablet! Sheesh Sean, she just gets excited to see your faces and thinks you’re friends. 🤦🏻♀️🤣👧🏻
If anything, Jon Snow in the books might be a good comparison for Toranaga (age and experience aside) like he’s not a great fighter in the books but he is a good leader and he’s making schemes and plays while trying to keep his morals.
Btw Toranaga is based off Tokugawa Ieyasu the Shogun who unified Japan
Beautiful democracy manifest reference in there
26:30 It's really more of a Papist plurality.
Dude in the yellow glasses looks like the kinda guy who probably has to suppress a stiffy at the part where Yabushige makes Blackthorne say, "I'm a dog."
No. No fleabag issue here. Mariko is better than that
Beast Eastern Inn
Morgan lookin great. (Respectfully)
That’s not a bald cap
The man of God that was in the jail with Blackthorne was actually a fellow protestant.
No he wasn't. He was a Catholic priest from a different religious order than the Jesuits. He prays in Latin, asks Blackthorn if he wants absolution, Blackthorn refers to him as "Father, " and does the sign of the cross. How in the world did you think he was a protestant?
.
Think you guys would like 3 Body Problems
I love you guys but do you understand how disrespectful it is to deny my faith but talk kindly about kamikaze as better
“For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ.”
Galatians 1:10
OMG 12:36 that yellow-green hair girl said "Unless he wins"
then Anjin said :" Unless I win"
that girl is the prophet
