Ishido is insulting Toranaga during the regent meeting because he’s hoping Toranaga reacts to the insult and Ishido will have a reason to execute Toranaga. Toranaga realizes this and doesn’t take the bait. But his samurai is angered by the insults. Toranaga denies that he’s been insulted (since honor would demand he respond to the insults which would mean his death). Such an incredible scene.
Regarding the comparisons to Game of Thrones... George R R Martin said that he was inspired by James Clavell's novel "Shogun", when he was writing his "A Song of Ice and Fire" book series.
I would like a link to that quote. I've been following Martin's blog for more than a decade now and I've never read any mention of him to either "Shogun" or James Clavell. GRRM has mentioned a lot of influences when writing ASOIAF. "Memory, Sorrow and Torn" from Tad Williams was the main influence, because it was the saga who made him realise fantasy and political intrigue could be intertwined. "The Accursed Kings" series by Maurice Druon is another monumental influence. GRRM named this saga as"the original Game of Thrones". "I, Claudius" and "Claudius the God" from Robert Graves are another acknowledged influence.
If FX keeps taking big swings and producing shows like Shogun, I'm all here for it. I love historical films but, I think they're dead now. It's way better to tell the story in a mini-series. Band of Brothers comes to mind. It's what they should've done with Napoleon.
LOVE Hiroyuki Sanada finally getting his flowers from the industry and culture at large by getting to lead in this and the all-around fantastic reception it’s receiving. A great bookend to this is The Twilight Samurai, a 2003 film where he’s the lead that’s 🔥. The closest we’ve had to a Toshiro Mifune in decades.
I started reading the book. Blackthorne was lead in the street by samurai guards. along the streets were houses and fences and the road itself all staggeringly clean. He has no idea where the wastes go. How did they do it? Blackthorne asked himself. lol
Don't think Toranaga has honourable intentions for the kid. He is playing the game and is primarily interested being the Shogun and all other things are chess moves to lead to that outcome. Protecting his legacy almost demands the kid be removed if he is successful. This isn't our time or morality and most of the council are in the same mindset too.
The reason why Blackthorne hated the Catholics was b/c he was a Protestant. Europe, at this time, was going through the Eighty Years' War b/w the Dutch Republic (allied w/ the English Kingdom) and the Spanish Empire (allied w/ the Portuguese Empire). A large cause of the Eighty Years' War was the Protestant Reformation which the Catholic Church considered it as heresy. Christians (Catholics & Protestants) were basically going through a religious civil war at the time.

The writers for Blue Eye Samurai said they felt that the British Empire were worst than the Portuguese Catholics, which is why they ignored historical accuracy by making the Europeans in their series British instead of Portuguese and Spanish. During the time period depicted in Blue Eye Samurai, the Europeans that were kicked out of Japan were all Portuguese and Spanish. The Dutch were granted permission to take over the European trade to/from Japan, because the only Englishman, that was in Japan and has befriended the Shogun, sailed/worked for the Dutch. The British Empire began their involved with Japan in 1854. Approximately 200 years after the time period depicted in Blue Eye Samurai.

This is a fictionalized account of real events regarding the rise of the Tokugawa Shogunate, just with some details and all the names changed. "Toranaga" is Tokugawa Ieysu, "Ishido" is Ishida Mitsunari , etc. "Mariko" (or Maria) is Hosokawa Tama (or Gracia.) "Blackthorne" is William Adams, an English pilot washed up in Japan when his Dutch merchant vessel was shipwrecked. He went on to become one of Tokugawa's only friends (because he was an outsider and had no interest in Japanese politics, and also had alien world views,) and went on to live the rest of his life in Japan as a samurai. "Goroda," who was killed by Mariko's family, is Oda Nobunaga, the first "Great Unifier," of Japan. The "Taiko" is Toyotomi Hideoshi, the second Great Unifier. The third, and last Great Unifier was Tokugawa Ieysu....sorry if you consider that a spoiler but we're talking about a historical event that took place over 400 years ago. Also, historically we know that Tokugawa Ieysu planned every single moment of these events from the assassination of Oda, the manipulation of the council and provocation of Ishida to war, all the way until he was Shogun, and at every step of the way he kept saying he, "didn't want it." Remember, the falcon conceals herself against the sun until the very last moment when she strikes.

James Clavell basically wrote a history textbook on the beginning of Edo period Japan by changing the names of historical characters and certain circumstances but kept the overarching historical event that will birth the Shogunate to rule Japan for hundreds of years to come.

But he's much more so main character of the book and the 1980 miniseries is def Blackthorne and it has the same name, it's likely more of an IP thing. People are gonna call it a white savior story. It's loosely based on a historical event. I wouldn't call the circumstances around Blackthorne's (Adam) story that category but I can see why this story looks that way as it was written through the eyes of a westerner observing Japanese history and culture. The juxtaposition of Western and Eastern culture is always amazing to explore.

Even though she's married, she still retains her father's status because she's a direct descendant, BUT because she's married, her son is now considered from her husband's line, therefore his status comes from his father, not his mother.

Read the books in high school more than 20 years ago, and they rapidly became my new favorite thing ever (tm). Lots of other content has hit that top tier for me over the years, but this was one of those first ones and holds a nice place in my heart. Looks like the show is doing a good job of carrying that.
I'm glad you guys are reacting to this but just to give some context, Blue Eye Samurai takes place about 60 years after this. The Japanese have been manufacturing guns for about 100 years. Blue Eye is as close to Japanese History as Samurai Jack. Shogun, although based on a book, is far closer to actual history and culture.
This show is awesome! The first episode was excellent and very intriguing. Sanada and Cosmo were excellent. Anna is beautiful and yes, the courtesan was sexy as hell! Great show!

2:23. To be more precise, this show is based on the novel of the same name by James Clavell, published in 1975. The miniseries from 1980 was merely another adaptation. Clavell was known for his Asian Saga, which included Shogun, Tai Pan (taking place in Hong Kong at the height of the British opium trade), Noble House (about the distant, modern-day descendants of the trade rivals in Tai Pan), and King Rat (taking place in the Middle East). The success of Shogun could potentially open the way for modern adaptations of Clavell’s other works (there are already movies of Tai Pan, King Rat, and Noble House but they were released in the 1980’s).

As a Japanese person, let me tell you a historical fact: After Anjin and his friends were stranded in Japanese waters, all the survivors were rescued and the villagers took care of them, and they returned to their village. I cured it. Among them, Anjin and another sailor remained in Japan, had a Japanese wife and child, and served the shogunate. Japan's response is the same as when the Turkish ship Ertuğlu ran aground. Both have historical records and monuments. The response was not as cruel as in the drama. In fact, it's the opposite. The beheading was too cruel. This is not true. There is a process to behead someone. Japanese people can't like the first episode. It's not even boiled in a pot. It's a Kabuki dramatization of a punishment story about a great thief named Goemon Ishikawa, who once existed. After all, it is an original work written by a British person. Hiroyuki Sanada assembled a veteran crew of Japanese period dramas to create all the movements, sets, costumes, beautiful Japanese, and samurai language, so even Japanese people can enjoy the production. If previous Hollywood movies and dramas set in Japan are 20% accurate about Japan, this one is 80% accurate.

This is a one and done season. They should adapt the other books in the asian saga using the same production team.

This show is awesome! The first episode was excellent and very intriguing. Sanada and Cosmo were excellent. Anna is beautiful and yes, the courtesan was sexy as hell! Great show!

2:23. To be more precise, this show is based on the novel of the same name by James Clavell, published in 1975. The miniseries from 1980 was merely another adaptation. Clavell was known for his Asian Saga, which included Shogun, Tai Pan (taking place in Hong Kong at the height of the British opium trade), Noble House (about the distant, modern-day descendants of the trade rivals in Tai Pan), and King Rat (taking place in the Middle East).
The success of Shogun could potentially open the way for modern adaptations of Clavell’s other works (there are already movies of Tai Pan, King Rat, and Noble House but they were released in the 1980’s).
