Don't struggle! The way subtitles get used in this story carries a lot of the cultural subtlety. You will miss out if you just skim over them. Better to pause your recording whenever you feel you've missed something so you can watch it again. Nobody will mind. In fact. your reactions will probably be better for it.
a dubbed version makes sense for almost any show but this one. the viewer is meant to share the englishman's confusion at not being able to understand the language (and the culture). you might miss some finer details of the game of thrones style intrigue, but the show does a good job making the broad strokes loud and clear.
After all the kicking and screaming about not watching anything with heavy subtitles like anime, I am glad you are giving this a try. Hope you both enjoy it.
My thoughts exactly! I was afraid they weren't going to react to it because of the subtitles. I'm visually impaired so I had to take a break between the back to back opening episode release but it was worth it! Just like Society of the Snow. I'm learning Spanish though so I wanted to watch it with subtitles. Squid Game ruined dubbed series for me, although Dark is pretty good dubbed.
Shōgun, the novel this is based on, came out in 1975. There was a miniseries made based on the novel in 1980. The Last Samurai came out in 2003. So if anything, Last Samurai borrowed liberally from Shōgun.
I deeply enjoyed the 1980 miniseries and loved it as much as this one. I can't state the why because it would spoil this one and the original. I love the reactions Steven and Nikki share with us too much to ruin their experience and our opportunity to share in their journey.
Tadanobu Asano, the actor that played Yabushige (the local Lord that fell from the cliff) was part of Thor’s Warriors Three! But seriously - They got top tier Japanese actors for Shogun, can’t wait for you to meet them all.
A rutter is the equivalent of a pilot's log, it contains all of his charts and notes. Blackthorne was able to get into the Pacific because he got his hands on a Spanish rutter telling him how to get through the Pass of Magellan at the bottom of South America.
I am SO HAPPY you guys are doing this show! I know subtitles aren't your thing, but I KNEW you guys would like it! So excited to take this journey with you. Also LOVE seeing Barney from Peaky Blinders in a role where he's not crazy, LOL.
Dear Nikki & Steven. Thank you very much for reacting to this amazing show. You could go above and beyond if you found the 1980 version of this series and did a contrast and compare viewing. Just FYI - this series take place while Europe is embroiled in recurring wars and periods of unrest due to conflicts between the Catholic and Protestant faiths, amongst others the Protestant British wars against Catholic Ireland (1529-1603) and the Eighty Years' War in the Low Countries - a series of conflicts and wars from 1566 or 1568 to 1648 between Protestant Netherlands (which in late 1590'es allied with Protestantt Britian) and Catholic Spain. This is why the British pilot Blackthorne is piloting a Dutch ship raiding Spanish settlements in South America.
If you watch some of the making of and behind the scenes videos, they talk about how it was a priority for the show to present historical Japan with as much authenticity as possible. So every detail - from the costumes to the language (1600's Japanese is not the same as modern Japanese) to the way people move and the ceremonies and on and on - was carefully represented. The show had the largest ever Japanese crew for any TV or movie production filmed outside of Japan. Actor Hiroyuki Sanada officially had a role of producer on the show, so when not acting, he spent his time on set making sure every detail was correct. By the way, the FX network's "Shogun Viewers Guide" web site is excellent. It has all kinds of features on the characters, episode summaries, the historical background, the making of the show, etc.
This show is based on the 1975 novel by James Clavel. I have read it 43 times. I have fond memories of the mini series made in the early 80's starring Richard Chamberlain, John Ryse Davies and the incredible Toshiro Mifune. I love this new interpretation. P.S. just finished rewatching your SOA reactions. Classic!
Rodrigues was the Mayor of Gotham City in the Christopher Nolan Batman films. Played by Nestor Carbonell. (But I know him best as Richard, the eyeliner guy, from "Lost"...well, and as "Batmanuel" from "The Tick".)
Rutters were books of notes taken by navigators, describing landmarks, weather at times of the year and which direction currents flowed. They even made notes about the type of sand/terrain at the bottom of seabeds, which was ascertained by using a lead tube with wax in it, that was on a long rope. Sailors "swung the lead" (a phrase used for an easy job nowadays) and made a note on how deep it was to the sea bed and what kind of sand, coral or gravel stuck to the wax. They had compasses, of course, but before accurate and reliable clocks were invented there was no way to measure Longitude. These rutters were top secret, priceless, and jealously guarded by navigators.
Honestly my favourite show of 2024 💯🙌🏼this came out of nowhere can't wait for season 2.. you really feel the passion and effect put into every scene, every dialogue and every set design, Shogun is more like a celebration of Japanese culture 🔥🗾
@@boxmulla Yes there will be, apparently. Just found out 30 minutes ago from another comment lmfao. They renewed Shogun for seasons 2 and 3 because of how successful it was. What's it going to be about? I have no idea, but they definitely are making a few more seasons. I'm not complaining though lol.
@@boxmulla Apparently, there will be now. The creators had intended it to be a limited series needing just one season to complete the book, but now they are looking to do a Season 2 (probably using real history to dictate the story).
One more thing, I'm not sure if anyone else pointed out that when it comes to names, the surnames are written first. Yoshii is our guy's surname so it's written (and subtitled) as Yoshii Toranaga. His son is Yoshii Nagakado. Just an example to make getting names down easier. He'll pretty much exclusively be referred to as Toranaga-sama in the show and simply Toranaga to us.
The english ship wasnt out to be dangerous to Japan. England and Portugal were at war. Portugal controlled the Japans overseas trade. England wanted in on the action. The english were only attacking Portuguese bases and ships on the way to japan. They want to weaken the chokehold they had over Japan and the money possible to be made by getting in it themselves.
It is not an English ship in the story; it is Dutch. This follows the actual history of William Adams who was an English pilot who was on a Dutch ship called De Liefde (The Love). John Blackthorne is an English pilot aboard the Dutch ship The Erasmus.
The title sequence doesn't show until episode 2 since it was a 2 ep premiere. But the opening was designed by the same team who did GoT and HotD's opening title sequences. Love the pun that Anjin means pilot and it's what they called the pilot episode.

Really excited to see you guys go on this journey. Easily my favourite show of the year and it's no surprise that it's got by far the most Emmy noms of any show. Cinematography, characters both male & female, storytelling...everything was stellar. Also, since you guys just finished Peaky Blinders, I think it's worth pointing out that Blackthorne was in season 5 of Peaky Blinders and the old man in the ship at the start as well, He played uncle Charlie.
Incredible show! The actor who you guys found familiar is Cosmo Jarvis. You're probably remembering him from Peaky Blinders where he played Barney, Tommy's former sniper.
Being privateers and not pirates, John and his dutch ship and crew are basically mercenaries at sea for The Netherlands. As a protestant nation it gives them not only the permission but the order to fight catholic - spanish and portuguese - ships and plunder their bases. These official orders are written in the so called 'letters of marque' John mentions. This is important because privateers are considered combatants and have to be treated as prisoners of war when captured by the enemy. Pirates are outlaws who kill and steal for themselves and not a crown and country. They are hanged immidiately in costudy. This is why the catholic priest in the fishing villiage Ajiro paints John as a pirate. He wants to manipulate the Japanese to kill an enemy of his state Portuhgal and get rid of him by circumventing the rules of war. The 1600s were the century when the war between catholic and protestant nations in Europe was at its peek. As they fought it around the globe at sea, in colonies and foreign countries it was kind of a world war.
So glad you guys are doing this show. It's really incredible. Y'all are in for a real treat. It's the best show of 2024. It deserves all the Emmys it was nominated for.
Just finished watching this series last night…. I was so late watching this, but this is so great…. You pick the great show to watch… enjoy your watch 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
This show is incredible. Blackthorne and company aren't pirates. They're privateers. Authorized by Dutch and English royalty to plunder Catholic Portuguese and Spanish settlements. On languages, Blackthorne is fluent in English, Dutch, and mostly fluent in Portuguese. With his sailors, they speak Dutch. When he's talking to Rodrigues (the pilot), the priests, and the Japanese translators they're speaking Portuguese. The Japanese is (almost?) always subtitled.
@@eodyn7 Not exactly. A pirate is an outlaw attacking and plundering anyone at will without limit by any authority. A privateer is a mercenary sailor/ship hired by a government bound to a code defining who they may attack and defining what is allowable plunder. Plunder which will be divided with the government that hired them. It also would act as request any captured sailors be treated as lawful soldiers rather than as criminals. The Dutch are in rebellion against the Spanish Crown who don't recognize the Dutch government or its mercenary soldiers but they are not pirates. Pop culture since Robert Lewis Stevenson has conflated the words to mean the same thing but in terms of this show's era they are distinctly different.
John (Cosmo Jarvis) was in Peaky Blinders, he played the sniper that had shell shock, I knew I knew him from somewhere I couldn't place him until episode 2 and I realised lol
I'm SO excited to see what you think of this show! This intro is a heavy and character-packed opener, but it does a great job of giving enough background on each one, and sets the tone brilliantly! Sanada is great in this - hope you enjoy the season!
John Blackthorne (the guy you thought looked familiar) was Barney in Peaky Blinders, the guy who was the sniper for the assassination attempt of Oswald Mosley.
Oh yes! Such a great show! I hope this opens up more shows for you in other languages ❤ You saw the actor who plays Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis) recently in Peaky Blinders. He was the sniper set up to kill Mosely, Barney i think he was named
Yes finally. So great zhaz you watch one of the best series last years. I cant wait to see your reactions in the follow parts. Thank you. Great content
This show does a very good job of dishing out the necessary info for the audience and answering questions in a pace that is exceptional. You’ll learn the character names of the important characters fairly well by maybe 3 or 4 episodes in. Just a behind the scenes note that is super cool is that Sanada is a producer on this and used that station to really push for the production to bring on actual Japanese experts to handle as much as possible to make sure the historical sets, costumes, language, and manner were as accurate as possible. One thing this show REALLY exemplifies is how much the people making it truly cared about making it great
Please watch Godzilla Minus One, with subs. It's much less dialogue heavy than Shogun and you'll want to experience the original performances. Very emotional.
Zweite und dritte Staffel wurden bereits bestätigt. Drehbuch für Staffel 2 wird bereits geschrieben und es wird gecastet und Locations gescoutet. Sanada hat als Produzent bereits unterschrieben.
I didn't think you would do this show because I know Steve is not a fan of subtitles but this show is intense and addicting. I couldn't stop watching it. Great acting and story telling! And visually pleasing to the eye! You won't be disappointed. This isn't Squid game!
John Blackthorne is played by Cosmo Jarvis, who played Thomas Shelby's crazy sniper friend that he broke out of prison who was supposed to take out mosby but got killed
@@MFBloosh yeah but the book was based on real events by real people just had some changes and different names.. so technically a lot of true source material is there to continue the show.. plus a third season would not have been picked up if there wasn’t a planned out story already in place to have had it be green lit that far. With the first season’s production having already been so high and the success it had combined with the investment for multiple more seasons the production should only get better
Series was good but the book is much better. Read it 30 years ago as a teenager. I respectfully disagree with you and hope there never be a season 2. It is impossible to match the source material, book with a thousand pages and the story has ended. If there is a season 2, it will be 2 steps back from quality at its best. Some franchises have been ruined because of greediness and I don’t want this franchise to be another one. Let it rest in peace
The story is one of feudal subterfuge where the gradual revealing of the different parts is deliberate because of the cultural differences which existed then. The whole series is magnificent

You are my favorite reactors on RUclips, and this is such a cool show. It’s a very subtle, detailed production and the attention to detail with Japanese culture and language is unparalleled. Sanada apparently insisted on a level of care that most other American productions would not have taken. I’d say it’s the most accurate depiction of feudal Japanese culture portrayed by an American show. It’s a gorgeous show and as soon as you finish it you’ll have to rewatch. 😊
entire set was built for the shoot in vancouver canada , village and castle was built . 95% filmed in canada, set was 30mins aaway where i live , it was someting else .
Hiroyuki Sanada isn’t just the lead actor he’s also one of the hands on producers on the show. He wanted an absolutely accurate depiction of 1600 Japan, so he brought on historians and experts in Japanese etiquette to make sure everything was absolutely perfect for that era. Plus, Hiroyuki is not only one of the best and most charismatic actors around but with his world class sword fighting and martial arts skills, he’s practically a samurai in real life. They literally couldn’t have picked a better person for the job.

@@benn454 Catholics had privateers as well. A privateer is a pirate with government approval.
I hope this opens up more shows for you in other languages ❤
You saw the actor who plays Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis) recently in Peaky Blinders. He was the sniper set up to kill Mosely, Barney i think he was named
Wasn't sure you were going to do this because of the subtitles, but so happy you're giving it a go. Great stuff. Great show.
You guys are gonna love this show more and more with each episode
This is such a great show. Definitely one of the best I've seen in the last few years. I really hope that you find it well worth the effort.
Yes finally. So great zhaz you watch one of the best series last years. I cant wait to see your reactions in the follow parts. Thank you. Great content
i'm SO HAPPY they renewed it for season2!! I was so hyped when i finished watching it, can't wait!
The captain at the very beginning of the episode is uncle Charlie from Peaky Blinders!
8:33 "is this a structure they built?". The while set was shot in British Columbia, Canada. Yes, they had to build all the movie set houses
You guys are going to FUCKING LOVE this!!
I love you're guy's reactions, thank you for taking the time to do them. I look forward to your videos ❤
Yes!!! I have been waiting for you guys to react to this awesome show 🤙🏼
You may recognize the actor who plays Yabushige - he played Hogun, one of Thor's warrior friends in the first few Thor movies.
TY for giving this a chance despite the subtitle barrier. Appreciate you both! Also John's insults are absolutely hilarious.
For some reason I thought you guys already reacted to this lol. If it wasn't for Chernobyl, this would be the best mini-series ever made.
It’s not a mini series since it’s been renewed already for season 2 and season 3
@@Kevin_Lazar Really???? That would be great because they weren't going to do that originally, since there's no more source material.
@@Kevin_Lazar Yeah just looked it up. Money and ratings talk, I guess. Lol. I'm not going to complain, though. Just hope they do it right.
Great reactions guys! You did a good job with the subtitles.
So good to see y'all watching this series! ♥
Guys, the way i'm screaming of happiness to finally see you react to this masterpiece!
Didn't know what to expect when I started it but Shōgun absolutely blew me away. Hope you guys enjoy it!
This is one of my favorite shows ever. Can't wait for season 2.
I can't believe you're just now getting to this show!! I'm dying waiting for you guys to react to ep's 9 and 10!!!
Awesome surprise from you guys
Yae, so happy you two are reacting to this awesome show! The series soundtrack is beautiful, too. 👍
Great choice !!!!!
This is a Tearjerker and a Game of a Throne in Japan without a stupid ending
The story is one of feudal subterfuge where the gradual revealing of the different parts is deliberate because of the cultural differences which existed then. The whole series is magnificent
I thought that if you guys were going to watch this show it would've been sooner, so I am both shocked and excited that you guys are finally watching it. I know you'll love it
Schedule was just jammed up for a good amount of time. That’s really the only reason we didn’t get to it sooner. Glad we finally started.
A lot of people forget Yabushige was in the Thor movies.
entire set was built for the shoot in vancouver canada , village and castle was built . 95% filmed in canada, set was 30mins aaway where i live , it was someting else .
36:20 FORGED IN FIRE SHOUT OUT 🫡🔥🍻
Ayo! I know Steven doesn’t really rock with subs so this is a super pleasant surprise! You’re gonna love it.
Ooooooooh it's about to get crazy. And crazy deep. I think you're going to go through every emotion with this series. When you guys finish this you really really need to check out Blue Eye Samurai.
The Spaniard that helps John is Richard from Lost
Cosmo Jarvis was the Sniper Tommy Shelby freed from jail, maybe that’s why he looks familiar.
This is such a good show. I didnt care for blackthorn's character BUT he is very beloved by most people that watched this show, so I know you will like him. The rest of the characters and so latered and just fantastic.
So glad you guys started this!!
