    Badd Medicine here and its reaction time
    Shōgun follows the collision of two ambitious men from different worlds, John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis), a risk-taking English sailor who ends up shipwrecked in Japan, a land whose unfamiliar culture will ultimately redefine him; Lord Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada), a shrewd, powerful daimyo, at odds with his own dangerous, political rivals; and Lady Mariko, a woman with invaluable skills but dishonorable family ties, who must prove her value and allegiance.

      The threesome scene explanation: the lord is probably impotent or a eunuch ("formerly male" - common punishment apart from seppuku) and can only 'get off' by brutally murdering people. The courtisan, being a pro, saw through that and 'offered' "watching" as maybe a potential substitute, since as she said, 'here to please' him.

      The theresome scene explanation: the lord is probably impotent or a eunuch (former male - it served a social function in those times in the east and possibly west). And probably 'gets off' only by brutally and slowly murdering people. The courtisan, being a pro, saw through that and suggested 'watching' as a possible alternative.

    This limited series is going to win ALL THE EMMYS :) Very happy that Hiroyuki Sanada finally takes centre stage in a Hollywood production & has a very important Producer credit on the show with all the crucial behind-the-scenes work he's put into the exquisite production! In case you didn't notice, John Blackthorne is a Polyglot. He speaks several languages but they are showing it in English, hence he can easily pick up Nihonggo as well. He was speaking Portugese and Spanish to the Catholics and he was speaking Dutch to his crew, but they are just doing it in English as a creative choice.

      @@GhostWatcher2024 Toranaga is also kinda based on Tokugawa Ieyasu

    • @kenjutsukata1o1
      @kenjutsukata1o1 16 дней назад +2

      @@GhostWatcher2024 I'd say it's a little more than just inspired by. Adams did sail with a fleet of five Dutch ships across the Pacific ocean, of which only his ship made it to Japan (the rest were lost or ended up having to go elsewhere). He also had a couple of run-ins with both the Portuguese and the Spanish. He and his men were also imprisoned by a local lord in Japan after a Jesuit priest convinced him that Adams and his crew were pirates. And once he was brought to Osaka to meet Tokugawa Ieyasu the Jesuits tried to convince Ieyasu to have Adams executed but Ieyasu denied them on the grounds that Adams hadn't done any harm to him or his country.
      So just like with all the historically inspired characters (Toranaga = Tokugawa Ieyasu, Ishido = Ishida Mitsunari, etc.) there are a fair few parallels between their stories and the actual events that happened to their counterparts.

    The translation that they did was specific because of the language that they used in Japan before and during the Edo period. A good majority of the actors are from Japan, the fight scenes and choreography are all from Japan. The costumes, the cloth used are all from Japan. The way the women walk the way the men fight the way that women fight are all choreographed done using Japanese stunt people.

    The Minowara bloodline reference refers IRL to the Minamoto family/clan, which was 1 of 4 great family clans from 794 to 1185. The Minamoto became dominant after beating the others. Minamoto Yoritomo was the first shogun from 1192 to 1199. So when Toranaga claims Minowara bloodline he is showing his family claim to be named shogun. A person could only be appointed shogun by the emperor, the Tokugawa shogunate ended in 1868 and there has not been a shogun since.

    • @brendanmystery
      @brendanmystery Месяц назад +2

      To be a Daimyo (local warlord), one had to be one of the four great family clans (or at least originally, as they all originated from the imperial period of Japan). All originating from the imperial bloodline. As any of the emperor's children that did not succeed the the emperor's throne were sent out to the outskirts.

    It is based on a novel by James Clavell, published in 1975, roughly a 1,000 pages. They made it into a TV miniseries in 1980 that aired on national network TV starring Toshiro Mifune as Toranaga and Richard Chamberlain as the anjin. It was a BIG deal at the time. I have it on VHS, DVD, and Blu-Ray lol, I love it. I was 10 years old when it aired and I watched it all and then read the book. It sparked my interest in Japanese history, language, and culture.
    Clavell wrote a series of 6 books based in Asia, called the Asian Saga. Others of note are: Tai-pan (1965), which takes place in the mid 1800s Hong Kong/China around the time of the first Opium War and the founding of Hong Kong. It is my second favorite Clavell book after Shogun. It was made into a movie in 1986, but I did not think it was too good.
    The next best novel IMO is King Rat (1962), which takes place in a Singapore prison/POW camp (Changi) during WW2 (Clavell was actually a prisoner in the Changi Prison camp during WW2). The book is great and they made a movie of it in 1965. I love the movie and I recommend you react to it.

    Okay, so real important distinction. The Emperor is just fine. We're fighting here to make sure that the dead Prime Minister's heir lives long enough to take over the hereditary role and assume Rulership over all of Japan. The five Regents were appointed as a way of preventing any one of the main threats to the Heir's life and future reign from deciding to just take the power and declare themselves Prime Minister, or in Toranaga's case because he alone had the "necessary bloodline" and ancestry, Warlord/Generalissimo (Shogun).
    The Emperor be just fine. Never in any danger. We're not even anywhere close to Kyoto.
    I saw the original on TV for homework assignments in 4th grade when it was on in the 80s. My parents didn't realize all of the content. Probably still don't, 40 years later. It was such an alien cultural depiction I immediately read the novel, and I ended up re-reading that novel a neurospicy amount of times until it got replaced with the Wheel of Time novels. Just stating that because FX did a tremendous job with this adaptation. They hit the main quest faithfully and all the side quest character arc beats they've managed to at least give a nod to, even if they don't give it screen time directly. It feels like they coded an easter-egg love letter to the book lovers, because even when a favorite scene or interaction doesn't appear, they nod to it enough that it's like a respectful nod to the need to cut some things, but also recognizing that no matter what gets cut someone is going to feel disappointed by that, so it's like a subtle little "We see you, our bad, but isn't the rest of the story great?" And that's such a lovely touch. They haven't needed it much, but when certain scenes ended up cut, it still felt like they were acknowledged, and nobody else does that yet.

      They assumed the "heir" is an heir to the imperial throne, and the deceased "Taiko" is an emperor.

    This series is actually more centered toward whole dynamics of the Shogun and the Council and their families than the 80's show. That show was more focused on Blackthorne and his experiences in Japan. I need to read the book now. This really looks into what actually is was to live at that time in Japan. Awesome!

    I just started watching this last week, hard to ration it, but still a few episodes left.
    Make sure you take in the culture shift, you have to break your mental, it is completely different in the east. You can lose your head in the middle of the street for not showing enough respect for upper class and noone will bat an eye.
    In reality it was exactly the same in the west back in those days, but the media kind of propagated this dillusion that we were more 'civilized' - we weren't (invention of guillotine, public executions etc.). But the respect for upper class, for elders, for your 'senpai' is still going strong in the east and if you're not an avid anime fan this is a mental shift you need to get with and get with fast to properly take this show in.

    Mason hit the nail right on the head. James Clavell, the author of the novel, wrote it that way so the reader would see Japan through John's eyes.
    In the original TV series, subtitles were purposely omitted so the viewers were also in the same situation as John: they didn't know what the Japanese were saying.

    I'm glad you guys are getting to this show. The book is one of my all-time faves. I loved the 1980s mini-series with Richard Chamberlain & Toshiro Mifune and I'm really enjoying this one. The differences in the adaptations are fascinating. Both are excellent takes on excellent source material. I'm very eager to see the finale tomorrow and then will watch you make your way through the eps to continue to savor it. :)

    They filmed these in Canada btw, in an interview with Hiroyuki Sanada, it was suppose to be filmed in Japan, but they don't have a wide area for view or good flat location because of lots of buildings and electric wires...so they shot all these in Canada, they also use some practical effects and practical locations...
    Hiroyuki is also a producer of this show...
    Game of thrones in Japan... can't wait for them to reach episode 9!

    In the mid-17th century, Spain had hegemony in Europe. Philip II, whose territories included Christianity and Portugal, controlled the world's maritime trade with a powerful armada.
    And he was trying to conquer China (Ming Dynasty) by using Japan's military power, which had succeeded in domestically producing guns. The method of increasing the number of Christian feudal lords through Christian missionary work, increasing their political power, and controlling them as territories was a specialty of Spain's world conquest strategy.
    At that time, Japan's silver output exceeded 1/3 of the world's trading volume, and the Netherlands, which became independent from Spain, established the East India Company and exported cannons and gunpowder to export Japanese silver. It was successful. By teaching Ieyasu about Spain's conspiracy and driving out Christianity and Spain, only the Netherlands, which pursued only profit, continued to trade with Japan even during the Edo period of national isolation.
