- Anyone who expected a big narrative of a bloody final battle or a major end-game will surely be disappointed by the Shogun finale. Nothing really happens in the episode except for a few things, like Yabushige’s seppuku and the fate of John’s ship. But there is a deeper meaning behind everything that we saw on screen, which proves why Shogun Episode 10 was perfect. Let’s talk about it.

Tadanobu Asano's expression at the moment of his character's demise is one that will stick with me for a long time. It seemed like he was trying to catalog ways of dying so he could ultimately choose an best one, arbitrarily placing a value on how one dies. His choices were devoid of duty, honor and loyalty with no real regard to anything outside of his own survival. I think once his blade plunged to the point of no return, he assessed where his own death landed on his list. His expression to Toranaga was the one of finally getting the joke. So good.
That scene was sooo good! Toranaga with the little delay and smirk to let Yabushige suffer just a couple moments longer was cool but cold-blooded!
I love how Yabushige called out Toranaga’s hypocrisy. That scene was gold and Yabu killed it… literally 😂
The man who played Yabu was phenomenal. All the cast were, but the way Yabu was portrayed was simply wonderful. The way he reacted to what was going on around him, it just felt so honest and real...never have I come to like such a duplicitious character. There really wasn't a weak link in this entire cast, not one. Sanada knocked it out of the park as Toranaga, I even liked his performance over Mifunes in the 80s version... Even the secondary characters like Fuji or Buntaro were well written and wonderful. The very fact that I can name them speaks volumes. Well done everyone. Don't get me started on the costumes and 90% of the set peices...awesome.

I not really enjoy episode 10, unlike in episode 8 and 9, i know it not about war scene like The last Samurai 2003 Tom Cruise, but at least show some, ;like the starting of battle, fight, and the end, and from begin to middle of the scene are good, but not after Yabushige second by Toranaga, episode 10 or ending are to rushing for my opinion. No battle, no Ishido lost and fled, later captue punish and parade at Osaka, He was beheaded no honor death to Ishido, Not showing story about of 2 of regent switch side, Toranaga half brother and 1 Christian regent Kiyama except leprosy Ohno, Ohno will lost and beheaded by his vassal after he know battle was lost, and later Ohno vassal committed seppukku, Toranaga become shogun bless by Emperor in Kyoto. and show not show Blackthorne rebuild his ship and build navy fleet for Toranaga in European/English style ship along with Japanese style ship. Battle of Sekigahara is very important to Toranaga(Iesyu). in real even, the reason Ieasyu win because many switch side and European cannon and gun tactics(in Shogun it thank to John Blackthorne, very sad that episode 10 are just to simple. story can tell about half brother swich side and apologized to Toranaga, and Kiyama angry to Ishido and expand the story. maybe they rushing plus no more money or budget to made more scene

After the death of Mariko-sama, I could have said, "Who cares what happens next," and I partly felt this after Episode 9. At the same time, I believe we witnessed a fitting conclusion. The duo of Fuji and John, as well as Toranaga and Yabu, worked exceptionally well in their scenes. When the fates of Fuji and John intertwined in mourning and letting go, it was emotionally a very strong and touching scene. I'm glad we got to see Fuji's character several times in the finale. It was also good to see when Buntaro showed respect to John and joined the work at the end of the episode. This short scene also indicated significant character development. Many mention that we didn't see a battle. In my opinion, there was no need for it. In this series, the true value often lay in the unsaid, implied, or non-verbally expressed aspects. For my part, I congratulate the creators and thank them for the experience!
Well she killed herself by running towards the explosion. Stupid. She whined every episode asking to be killed and she got it.
I also believe there was no need for a battle. The conversations between the characters in the finale and realizing their overall journey was more satisfying to watch in my opinion

The finale may not have been what everyone wanted or expected, but it was the perfect ending for the series.

Nothing happened. 5 filler episode of complete nothingness with Toranaga absent, he's a coward who is only tough enough to kill his own people and innocent villagers. Throughout the entire show he didn't kill a SINGLE enemy, only his own people! Coward and a psychopath.

I think the 9th episode was the zenith of the show, while the 10th episode served as an excellent epilogue with plenty of deep content and conclusion.

It is childish to think one side can win before the real battle hapoens. It is a drama about plots，that means the letter can be a trap as well.
Yabushige's Haiku was the best out of the everyone IMHO, he found humour and at the end - acceptance on his death when he glanced at Toranaga with a smile.

The acting by all cast members was superb. I felt a surge/tingling through my body during many scenes that seemed very real! I wish there were more episodes.

It was a brilliant ending for all of the reasons you spoke about. Yabushige was such an amazing character - hats off to Tadanobu Asano, who portrayed Yabushige perfectly (he also starred as the lead role of Genghis Khan in 2008's epic movie, Mongol...which he was brilliant in as well). This adaptation of Shogun is going to live with me for a long time - the acting, plot, character development, costumes, set, cinematic beauty, poetry...sublime.
You really don't need a battle on the scale of helm's deep or a dragon toching an entire city to bring closure to a story. Shogun will be regarded as one of the best shows of the decade.

I agree...I think a lot of viewers were indeed looking for a slam-bam ending centered around Blackthorne .... ummmm....the Show is called SHOGUN not Anjin. The restraint shown regarding battle set pieces with priority instead going to character development and genuine, believable political intrigue leaves me hopeful that studios will learn their lesson and start making shows that entertain grown-up folks. Some other shows centered around 14th to 18th Century Europe and North America (White Queen, Outlander among others) were to sexed up and tried to sell small-screen "spectacle" but just devolved into anachronistic pablum. This made them predictable and boring.
I disagree. A larger battle would have suited it better and wrapped the entire show in a perfect bundle. It was a good build up, only to find episode 9 was the climax. Episode 9 felt more of the perfect precursor buildup to the bigger battle to come. I felt cheated and baited. I never got to see Toranaga like how he is in His full armor like how they advertised him in the main poster with his sword out ready for battle. I feel cheated… the show lacked that big bang climax that made me feel like the show never really had an ending. It feels like I’m still waiting for more. It doesn’t feel resolved…

@@user-pv2sl2nq2d Conclusion is showing who won the battle at the very least, like it is in the book. All this scheming was to prepare for the upcoming battle and then they end it by assuming he's going to win. Well, maybe he loses.
In the original series the actor who played "Lord Yabu" which is how I always remember this character was a comedian by trade. Here, Yabushigge successfully melds the serious and the comical, always trying to walk a fine line between Ishida and Toranaga but in the end, he is undone by his own actions and even in death, there is something lively, even magical. A high honor when Toranaga himself deals the death blow. Yabushiggae always had this hilarious sense of humor each time he rewrote his will.......knowing the sunrise of each day would be his last.

Every episode has been a better episode than the last.
I thought I was the only one who caught that phrase from Fuji but, you also forgot the phrase from Toranaga to Yabushige before he beheaded him that also came full circle. In epi. 1, Omi asked his uncle if he was going to tell Toranaga about the ship. Yabushige replied, "Why tell a dead man the future?"

I thought both of those verbal callbacks were covered in this video. In any case, they work so well in such different scenarios in episode 10! It’s such a mic-drop for Toranaga as he prepares to second Yabushige, as Yabushige gives Toranaga that subtle body language indicating, “Well played.”

I like how the fisherman spy remained in character all the way to the end..even Toranaga had to tell him to snap out of it

Your review of final episode is the first one that doesn't say I'm disappointed. You nailed it! everyone was expecting bloody battle of 10 of thousands samurais like in GoT, but this series is not about battle scenes its about showing emotions and how complex people are, how different and at the same time similar we are even if we come from two different sides of the world.

I'm an idiot. I thought the dream was real and Mariko's cross was teken to the ship by the current and he found it during the rebuild. I have failed. But I'm rarely surprised and I like that.

Tadanobu Asano as Kashigi Yabushige is the best in the entire series, it's very possible that he will receive some award, that someone will appreciate him
I think the Climax was in episode 9. Mariko was the Hero whose sacrifice saved lives by avoiding a full scale war. I was disappointed in episode 10 because I was expecting a climax, but didn't realize I'd already seen it. Episode 10 was more of an epilogue closing plot lines and reflecting on themes of the show. If I were to watch it again, I'd likely enjoy it more knowing what to expect.

To be honest, I was glad they didn't share the war. Maybe one day they will make a movie about it. Wishful thinking lol
I am adamant that Toranaga is the true villain. The brilliance of the story is in not portraying him as the villain, when in actuality, he was. He's the one that wanted to break peace, and he sacrificed so many people around him, played with their lives, to get what he want it. After being offered condolences about his son's death in this episode, he even said that it was a good thing that he had more sons. That shows that, to Toranaga, everyone has a certain degree of expandability.

Toronaga was just the most successful villain. Ultimately, he prevented the child of an upstart peasant from becoming Japan's hereditary most-high leader.

Fuji's line on the boat with John, helping him let go of Mariko, suggests she knew about them all along. Which casts previous episodes in a new light. That actress, (and the writers of her character), made that relatively small role unforgettable.

Great analysis Sure I wanted a big battle & for Ishido’s head to be on a pike but this finale was far more poignant with exposition over action. This show was phenomenal & the actors crushed it. Everything was amazing from the sets to the costumes to the cinematography, etc It’s sad that it’s only 1 season, but what a season it was.
Yes the conversations and all the callbacks to the previous episodes were incredible. Great storytelling doesn't need big battles sometimes

@@thenextseason Loved Episode 10 & again great analysis. I’ve watched some reactions to 10 & almost all of them share the same glowing sentiment. I’m surprised since I thought there might be disappointment being voiced about the lack of a big battle & gaudy special effects given that studios like Marvel has inundated us with over the too cgi spectacles. Overwhelmingly it seems like most people were emotionally moved by this powerful episode as most seem to have enjoyed the exposition over action
@@shakeyfly Yeah, that’s crazy What a horrible way to go In fact, the battle is modeled after the historical Battle of Sekigahara as much of the book & the characters are based on real historical events & people. In the real battle Ishido’s army numbered 120,000 to Toranaga’s 75,000 but after defections the numbers about evened out which helped turn the tide. Of course the names were different but the real battle is close to the Shogun’s book’s battle. IIRC the name of the opposing regent was Ishida so it’s really close. Apparently he really was buried up to his neck where he lasted for 3 days until he died. Reading about the battle is fascinating. The Wiki entry is quite good as it describes the prelude & lead up to the battle, the battle itself & the aftermath. This lead to two centuries of peace & prosperity even though Japan chose to remain insular. It wasn’t until the 19th that Japan started to open up to foreign relations.
Episode 10 was incredible but that’s where it ends. It’s a bummer there will nit be another season.😕😭😢
The battle of Sekigahara was probably a month after and even though being out numbered, Tokugawa Ieyasu won and became SHOGUN.
Yabushige was the one I rooted for the most to come around to being loyal to Toranaga. Tadanobu Asano was one of my favorite characters and actors, but EVERYONE did a great job. We need Hiroyuki to do more of these, the attention to detail, tradition and overall mindset of the Japanese of the time were executed immaculately.
The ending had the shape of haiku. It was beautiful.

The last episode is so amazingly deep and profound, that one funny scene of John stopping Muraji from translating his full words caught me off guard LOL

So many wanting big battles. _Godzilla x Kong_ is out there for a reason. Anyone who’s familiar with the source material of _Shogun_ , and/or who’d noted the emphasis on political and interpersonal intrigue driving this show, would set aside expectations for a big battle in the finale.
I liked how Yabushige's "last" last will wasn't revealed and read in the end.

Best show of 2024 and been some pretty decent other ones too. And will be one of best limited series, ever.
Don't be sad that Shogun is over. Be happy, it was such a big hit they'll have no choice but to do a re telling of Tai Pan. James Clavel's other Asian Saga.
Believe me, you won't be disappointed. Shogun is basically a tragic love story, with a Samurai Theam. Tai Pan is an epic adventure full of intrigue, action, adult themes, betrayal, tons of East meets West conflict, and a good bit of history.
I read both, Tai Pan is a better story with a wider appeal, and a much bigger climatic ending.
This telling of Shogun was very good, and I am going to have to re watch the '80s mini series to help get past my post show depression.
5 first episodes were amazing. The second half of the show 100% filler, nothing happened.

4:40 - I would argue that he is both. He is selfish in his desire to keep Blackthorne in Japan for no good reason, and in his belief that he alone can bring about the Japan he dreams of. He is definitely ruthless and ambitious.
But I would say that his desire to bring peace to the people and his dislike of needless bloodshed is genuine. If you think about it, every death he orders or causes has a deep and unavoidable purpose. It's not really conveyed that well in the show, but the Ajiro villagers he had executed were Yabushige loyalists. After all the lives that had been lost, he cannot afford to have them undermine what he's achieved, because then Mariko, Hiromatsu and Nagakado would have died in vain. Not to mention that we see him genuinely mourn those who gave their lives, even when he's alone and there is no-one to deceive. In spite of what he told Kiri and Shizu, he did mourn Nagakado's death. But in his eyes, his son had a good, purposeful death in service of what Toranaga considers the greater good.

The ending is brilliant. People are conditioned to want the big climax and battle. Even the characters in the show. They showed up to battle not knowing that they had already lost a long time ago. It is refreshing to see great writing and refreshing to know that the show is over. Good stories end.
It's not about a big battle, it's about conclusion. If they had just shown the moment after the battle, making it clear Toranaga actually won, that would have been the pay-off for all his planning. Now it's just "He's probably going to win...maybe. He seems confident he will win but we will never know for sure".
@@MustardSkaven We know he won, this story is loosely based on a real story of Miura Anjin (William Adams) and Tokugawa Ieyasu (Toranaga). Tokugawa has won, and Anjin never left Japan, he died in 1620 in Nagasaki a wealthy and powerful man.
A big CGI battle is something we’ve seen many times and would have detracted something here. Instead we have a much more intimate & satisfying conclusion that shows Toranaga as the expert politician having manipulated everyone into doing what he needed them to do. Nobody was really good or evil - just people doing the best that they could in the circumstances.
This was indeed a beautiful show. I would have loved to see the battle but I’m overall extremely pleased with the final product.

I thought the exposition between Yabushige and Toranaga worked but didn't have near the emotional pull that the letter from Mariko to John did in the 1980's miniseries. This was by far the better version, but there were moments in the older version that excelled as well...

All I hope we understand we are stranded on a little pebble of stone in an infinite Universe, fighting for scraps of resources at an ant level... Maybe there is a hope for us? I think think the final message of the show is a pacifist on, a message for mutual understanding and cooperation? Man, we are fighting for scraps and mud...
It was great and beautiful. But I felt baited and teased… there was no big battle scene. Episode 9 felt like the climax and episode 10 felt like an after-story… Episode 9 was perfect setup and buildup for a larger scale battle. I never got to see Toranaga march into battle like how he is in the main advertising Poster of Toranaga in full armor adornment and sword out. I feel cheated…
Because of this, 8/10, could have been 10/10….

I have read the book and the original 1980 miniseries. Although Fuji ( Fujiko in the book) died in the novel. She never died in the 1980 miniseries nor she became a nun. I think she changed her mind and later became Anjin-san's wife. She was becoming a Nun more so for her husband and son. Not just for Mariko-san. However Blackthorne didn't want her to leave him. So I think he wanted to show her a sailor's funeral. In which is believed by sailors that a person's soul and spirit will be around forever. By showing her this and together they buried her family and Mariko-san. She later decided to stay as his consort and perhaps later his wife. Because of this act. They moved on and became a couple. As for Toda Buntaro, he lost not only his wife but his father. So besides his son. He acknowledges Blackthorne as family. Great review. ❤. I think the miniseries although be it being different than the one of the 1980s it was fantastic ❤

I was disappointed at the finale and there was elements that made no sense. They show John on his death bed holding Mariko's cross, yet there is a scene where he literally throws her necklace in the ocean to let her go SMH

I started the show expecting (hoping) to see loads of Samurai duels…and although enjoyed the first few episodes was still losing patience; “where’s the f*ing sword fights?”…I’m ashamed of myself; still a kid I suppose; the show is incredible, and I’m very sad it’s over.
yeah yabu definitely was a character. throughout most of the show he caried a bit of a weird sinister/ jester kind of feel, but like u said his facial expressions and overall portrayal were captivating . his and blackthornes characters both i think showed a curtain genuine ignorance that isnt normally seen in a series or various forms of entertainment. i think the overall theme of this conclusion ( and really the whole series) is BALANCE. as u eluded to we learn that Toranaga isnt this pyric leader, but also makes morally wrong moves for the common good. like him every other character in some way or another came full circle and was humbled

The ending was brilliant. It created the perfect set-up for a blockbuster of a Shogun movie. btw I'm into chess. The way I see it, Lord Toranaga is the Magnus Carlsen of feudal Japan.

薮重||Yabushige 's dying expression reveals that he sees that his doing throughout the season has not only servered 虎永||Toranaga 's scheme but also fulfilled his own soul searching effort, which is "To be bigger than life" (not one's own living and dying, but to belong to something greater)
It fits to the character's background and standingpoint, and provides a spiritual movitation for him too.
On the other side, I'd say 虎永||Toranaga 's final smile to 薮重||Yabushige is not only to show the lord's cruelness, but to reveal a sympathy to his own kind of people, people who always trying to climb the ladder in order to find a place they belong, to be part of the bigger plan.
虎永||Toranaga takes the upper hand at the moment, but he too is only reading the wind\trend. Thus, he is the one who thinks he has found the place for him and looking down on 薮重||Yabushige as someone didn't have the luck, who is actually reflecting 虎永||Toranaga 's own doing, for not the luck, 虎永||Toranaga could all possibly be just like 薮重||Yabushige.
So, 虎永||Toranaga is kind of enjoying killing part of himself in the process, making him the one who controlls "live and die, nothing eles"
Its a dream within a dream, in his dying bed, he dreams of being back in England. The real John never made it back. It is open to interpretation. I believe it is just a dream, of him back in England!
It seems like comic book movies have fried the neurons of a lot of the Western audience and killed their ability to appreciate subtlety. This is not that kind of series, the true battle is fought with double-edged words and not swords, meaningful looks and body language. If you don't like it, then this show is probably not for you.
I agree! A lot of people expect action-packed scenes to call a show great but sometimes less is better

Agree. In chess, when it’s clear who’s won, the game is over. Also, in this series they contrast the butchery involved in Toranaga’s first victory, including Toranaga’s poor sword skills, with his sublime strategic deftness and clean final sword stroke to become shogun.
really captivating serie, BUT, not sure i would like a second season, without Mariko, who we all fell in love with, she made this magical, to me, without her, course i would watch, but i don't see some magic coming back😪

関ヶ原の合戦以降、将軍の座に座った虎永がその権力を私欲を満たすのみに使ったなら、それはただの権力を欲しただけの男と見なされて良いと思います。実在した虎永のモチーフとなった徳川家康は、実際日本に300年近い比較的平和で戦争の無い時代を築いた人です。
大切な人を死に追いやりながらも、最小限の流血のみで紅天を成し遂げ、泰平の世を築き上げるには自分しかいないと思い、将軍の座についたとも読みとれます。
Although I thoroughly enjoyed this new version of Shogun I still prefer the original. But my compliments to the actors and costume makers that worked so hard to bring us this updated version. Beautiful show.👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

In the podcast episode, they confirmed that it was all in his head, a vision of one way his life might turn out. The destruction of the Erasmus and Mariko's death has forced him to let go of all that and begin a new life in Japan.

Real warriors win the war before they set out to fight it, warriors who set out to win a war not knowing the outcome will invariably fail. Toranaga set out to win the war without fighting a battle, surely the best way to win a war.

...which viewers are still debating today. In the end, life is mostly chance and ambiguity. That's why people crave happy, fairy tale endings. Helps to make sense of the world.
I disagree with part of your take. Regarding John, Toronaga dismisses his significance but at the time he was still not being honest with his intentions or feelings. It was only through the hint of using Yabushige's own line that he indicated that he had been strategizing from the very beginning of the show, and the smile to Yabushige gave a glimpse of his "secret heart" or true intentions. I think everything else that was said to Yabushige could be chocked up to still hiding his true feelings or intentions including his feelings and intentions regarding John.
Give Sanada the budget for the epic battle, FX!!! You cheaped him out! We want the epic battle and the betrayal

Only two nitpicks of mine. The fact that John’s crew was a deep motivation for him for most of the show, and then he only meets 1 of them and has physical altercation, and then just essentially forgets about all of them and gives up on them. Felt a little rushed and definitely could’ve been flushed out more, but I understand it’s only one season and the show isn’t really about John and his crew more about the Japanese “game of thrones”.
Speaking of thrones Shogun is only the second most powerful position in the country (at least on paper). Very odd to have a show about all these top-level nobles scheming and fighting over power but yet the actual Emperor himself doesn’t have any part at all in the story on any level. The man has never been seen or heard from or even alluded to even existing in general. Even if the Emperor doesn’t usually exercise any political power all that often in their culture still very weird that the show never even acknowledges that man even exist.
But with all that being said aside from those two somewhat nitpicks of mine excellent show and I give it a solid 9 out of 10.

Must be really low budget. Building up for war the entire season, then nothing. The entire end of episode 10 was narrated by Taranaga. Everyone should have just read the book. Studios now try to tell a story without spending any money.
I know this seems like I wanted some big climactic battle sequence, but I feel like having a scene of Toranaga victorious over the battle and Ishido bowing on his knees with all the other generals would’ve made this a little bit more satisfying. It’s still a great finale but damn all that build up and for what? Just a quick wrap up of what’s to come?

what's up with all these 'Explaining the show' getting it all wrong. LOL! This is the THIRD one I've seen that does not understand what the Yabushige dialogue part and/or what the final scenes were about. How are you all missing so many important clues?

Nah the finale was lacklustre, fine they wasn’t a big action scene i can make peace with that but idk the finale didn’t make me excited for season 2 in my opinion the series could end here and I would be content with the story as a whole

i enjoyed the show, but i didn't really enjoy the ending. i think it needed more episodes to be satisfactory. however, i agree, Yabushige was awesome. him and Mariko carried the show.
imho, they were both awesome but they dwelled in Toranaga's haunting shadow.
Extremely disappointing from someone who had watched the 80s and have read the book.
