What did you think of Shogun Episode 5? It was definitely a tamer episode but wow... Ochiba is here to cause some trouble! The sinister laugh and tone that she had showed that she's going to take no prisoners whatsoever! I can't wait to see where it's gonna go next!
I see John standing the garden stone as his way of honoring the gardener, finally starting to understand how those around him value life and that his words have weight. it was a really powerful moment in his character.
At first he tried to blame everyone else for killing the gardener bc he buried the pheasant. Mariko told him it was his own words of "anyone touch is death..." that caused the death of the gardener. He finally got the aha that it was his casual words, which were the law in his home, that led to the death. He finally took responsibility for it which shows he's learning about this new culture he's in.
@@BrainPilotThe Shogun director mentioned this show is more comparable to Succession and House of Cards, than to GOT. The tense dialogue scenes with long, awkward pauses can sometimes be more intense and cut deeper than mere sword fights.
@ssotkow - I’d say it’s more EARLY season game of thrones where they didn’t have the budget for big scale battles and had to rely on story and characters. You wouldn’t find a conversation like the “Earthquake” and “Death is in our air” post Season 4 of Game of Thrones
I was actually filled with emotion when John went to place the rock back in the garden and took his time to smooth the pebbles around it. This show deserves an award already.
The death of the gardener had an impact on Blackthorne. He realized then he had the literal power of life and death over them. It tempered his thinking as a Samurai from that day on.
I was just writing my own comment to say how I teared up at that moment. It was in that moment that John found meaning in that object out of his reverence for the Gardner... Just as the locals put the Gardner to death due to their reverence for John.
My takeaway from this episode was that John realises the nature of Japan. Death is in the air as Mariko said. Seeing it firsthand with the earthquake. Change is constant. So the stone in the garden is a symbol of bringing some stability and order into the chaos that surrounds them.
7:28 I interpret that scene a bit differently. Buntaro blame his behavior on the sake, and while it was shown that he did consume a considerable amount, the fact that he still maintained enough control to shoot his arrows that accurately means that at the point when Buntaro hit Mariko, it wasn't the sake that make him out of control, he knew exactly what he was doing, Buntaro intentionally wanted to hurt Mariko.
True, while Buntaro is basically a master at all traditional Japanese activates, he's actually quite a thick person prone to fits of anger, you add that to the fact Mariko's father murdered Nobunaga and its a recipe for disaster.
Hirokatsu is a fierce warrior, a superlative archer, and a master of the Cha noh Yu: the tea ceremony. But he's brutal and stupid. In the novel, while everyone fears or respects him, nobody likes him. His father, Hiromatsu, detested him. He killed his own mother due to some contrived act of infedelity or disloyalty. Toronaga keeps him around out of respect for his father and his usefulness as a "gosh hawk " well suited for hunting from the fist. Interestingly, he feels that most of the male characters are Hawks : skreeking, willful violent creatures, ( Naga in particular, though hes very fond of him and in the book hes only 16 ) and best suited for the direct kill . However, there's only 1 or 2 falcons and only 1 peregrine . .....
Being drunk can make someone violent. Even if they keep their fine motor skills. It's more to do with your mood when you start to drink. That's how I see it. If you are in a childish and bad mood, drinking will only elevate those traits.
@@gggz420he knows the husband can hold his sake well enough to shoot straight, meaning if he pushed him either john or both of them would die that night
My take away was that it made John realize just how powerful an adversary Buntaro truly was… his marksmanship while inebriated was an eye opener for John for their inevitable clash down the road.
Mariko's story of her father reminds me of Jaime Lannister a.k.a "The Kingslayer", since they both broke their "oaths" of protecting their Lords and now Mariko and Jaime are taking the consequences.
But Jaime never really suffered the consequence of killing his King, he wasn't stripped off his position of Kingsguard and no one really hates him for killing the Mad King for being such a terrible human being
@@chaosomega623 yeah true. But knowing you'll only be known as the Kingsguard who broke his oath sucks and is a consequence in of itself. This can be seen in the scene where Joffrey opens the book of Kingsguards and their deeds and seeing Jaime didn't have any notable deeds. Also, it doesn't help that "The greatest" swordfighter alive lost his good hand. That's why I love the bath scene with Brienne. One of the few chances we're able to see what he feels.
Very much enjoyed the episode. The last bit amidst all the chaos and destruction was when Blackthorne hurries to see an injured Fuji was my favorite scene. Fuji upon seeing Blackthorne tries to look away as she is still ashamed of disappointing and failing her hatamoto. Before she looks away, Blackthorne doesn't say a word and briefly clasps her hand to ease her sense of shame and to show his genuine concern for her well-being. She looks back at him slightly bewildered but also at ease. Blackthorne lets go of her hand and steps to the garden to place the rock back up, and carefully tends to its foundation--he then looks straight at Fuji while his hands are still placed on the rock--as if to convey a message. What that message is can be many things--that he doesn't fault her for the death of the gardener, that he recognizes it was he who disturbed the harmony of the house for his cultural and linguistic misunderstandings, etc. Regardless of the message, you can see that she immediately understood what he was trying to convey and is able to look at Blackthorne's face without shame. All of this without a single word said in this scene--perfection.
The importance of the scene with Mariko's husband is that he's clearly lying about the sake being the reason for his behavior. If he can shoot arrows that well, then clearly the Sake isn't why he behaved like that. He's definitely up to something. If i had to guess, he's a spy for Ishido. How else can we explain him still being alive.
Thats such a good catch. It didnt make sense he would have survived. It would also explain why he doesn't take to Anjin and has all this aggressive hate towards him. If he is a spy thats how he survived and he is taking out his hate on Anjin because its the only one he can take his hate on.
As soon as his survival was confirmed, I thought the same thing. The reveal that he was unhappily married to a wife from a "despicable" family also comfort that idea. Despite the image of what people have of Samurai "honor", betrayal and side switching was extremely prevalent.
I have read the books more times than i am proud to admit. Seen previous adaptation, good for its time , budget and technical limitations. This show is good, the adaptation is good. The actors are well chosen.
100% agree. In my opinion she's a much better actress than the woman playing Mariko, the small expressions she uses and the body language are amazing and she has a better chemistry with John, while Mariko just seems to be either bored or forcing a crying face whenever she's on screen.
I think you were off the mark (pun intended) with the arrow symbolism. Buntaro blamed it on the sake but the fact that he can do that with so much alcohol says that his behaviour still under his control. He knows what he’s doing even under the influence.
i agree. It was way of him communicating. Actually it was considered to be non mature to talk too much as Samurai. This still somewhat exist in the society today for male.
There is a hidden meaning to his words which Blackthorne didn't realise but eventually did... Why he called Buntaro a cowardly bastard and left. Buntaro said tales of bravery are for the dead. And he would say none. Mariko heavily implied that Buntaro got out of that battle by less than honorable means. Then when Blackthorne confronts he takes the cowards way out of blaming on the sake. Then Blackthorne realised Buntaro is a fucking coward and hence his anger
There were many reasons why Mitsuhide betrayed Nobunaga. One of them is that Mitsuhide made a peace deal with a certain clan by sending his mother as a hostage. However, Nobunaga suspected that the clan sent someone to assassinate him so he stormed the castle of that clan, causing the lord of the clan to execute Mitsuhide’s mother. Mitsuhide never forgave Nobunaga for that and with the constant abuses he received from Nobunaga, he snapped and betrayed Nobunaga.
That's a debunked fictional story that arose several decades after the event. Reality is:- 1. Mitsuhide had ties with the Chosokabe through his vassals and retainers. Oda was poised to attack the Chosokabe once the Uesugi and Mori clans were subdued. 2. Mitsuhide was one of Oda's most trusted and powerful vassals. Whilst acts of disrespect to Mitsuhide by Oda are documented, the rewards and honor given to him for his service were far greater. During that period, all lords were ambitious and wanted to expand their holdings, wealth and influence. Mitsuhide was no exception. 3. The fallout of betraying and killing Oda were undoubtedly huge and risky to take unless given certain assurances thus the theory of greater conspiracy involving other influential lords emerges. 4. Were we to dismiss the notion of a greater conspiracy, whether premeditated or not, if Mitsuhide wanted to overthrow Oda the conditions were ideal. Oda was isolated and virtually defenseless whilst expected retaliation in the form of Hideyoshi and Shibata were both engaged against the Uesugi and Mori clans. Secondly, Mitsuhide had a marriage pact with the Hosokawa, an influential, powerful clan from Kinki/Kansai and good relations with other nearby Oda vassals such as Junkei and Takayama. In other words, he was surrounded by "allies" whilst his opponents were far and engaged. Unfortunately for Mitsuhide, things didn't quite play out as he had hoped.
@@justanotherviewer1867 The imperial court might got involved as well, considering there was an anti-Nobunaga coalition because he burned a great temple on Mount Hiei.
@@nont18411One theory suggest that anti-Oda coalition in the imperial court were concerned that Oda with his infinite ambition would try to depose the emperor. How valid were their concerns I don't know.
So what you guys are telling me is Shogun season 2 (let's keep watching and make this show a phenomenon) should be a prequel and tell the story of Mariko's family and Kuroda (Nobunaga)? I'm all for it so we can also see Yasuke, the African samurai who was loyal to Kuroda too.
I love this show but EP5 has to be a stand out episode and the best so far. I was glued to my screen from start to finish and there wasn't even much action. I think we needed the deliberate pace setting to make the action all that more impactful and meaningful. Brilliant show so far.
8:26 William Adams was given permission to leave Japan in 1613 but choose not to. After 13 years, he'd become fluent in Japan's language and customs, and even took a Japanese wife.
@@wadepsilon01For historical perspective, this was also the same year of the founding of the colony at Jamestown. Putting these two events together (check out the timeline of Musashi Miyamoto also) really helped me realize when I was younger that all history is happening all the time.
The production value of this series is so high. It's like we're getting 10 hour long feature films, not a tv series. The earthquake scene was unbelievably well done. Can't wait for Ep 6
Literally on the last page lol, when Toranaga reveals his whole monologue. “It’s my karma to be shogun”. The ending of the book is on a level of its own.
The Earthquake and the landslide, and the multitude of death it provoked, was also an emphasis on Mariko's statement in the previous scene (we live and we die, "shouganai") and shed light on the impact on how an unforgiving environment can shape a philosophy that can de-value life itself (and not just the architecture of their homes). There is a bit of a contradiction between Mariko's desire to commit seppuku to join her family and her Catholic faith (she probably joined as a reaction to her horrible situation, as people do) that forbids suicide. I hope they will come to explain it.
@@bennygerow I have read the book and seen the previous series... None of this is true. Nobody knew or suspected it. Except for Toranaga. But he chose to ignore it as he saw it as one more chain to keep the Anjin in Japan forever
Man, im having such a blast with this show, it keeps getting better and better! This episode focusses mostly on the traditions the Japanese have and how seriously they take them and the viewers learns about this trough the eyes of blackthorne, which is captivating. The dinner scene was incredible from starting rather funny to becoming really serious and emotional very fast. Probably the best scene of the show thus far. Besides that the plot keeps unfolding and keeps getting more exciting, I already can't wait for next week. This show is so good, the actors, music, beautiful scenery are all incredible. It is truely history in the making!
The dinner with Buntaro was so well executed and so tonally disturbing. I was waiting the entire time for things to go south… Technically they did, but it was gripping. The writing and direction were on the money. Can’t wait to see what happens next with the mariko/blackthorne debacle.
Mariko and John's "relationship" does't seem to come from actual romantic feelings, for John she's the only person who can understand him and she's the connection between him and everyone else, and Mariko seems to be interested in him because he's something foreign and new and different from the men she knows, it's just curiosity and lust. I think something more genuine can be already happening between John and Fuji-sama.
u just said the reasons why they fell in love with each other. U didn't say why such love is bad. U just like Fuji sama and she is really cute, not gonna lie
@@tonok_g8873 I said what they felt was curiosity and lust, not something genuine, feeling attracted to someone just because is new and foreign is just to fetishize the person, and genuine love cannot be born from that.

It was a serious health concern, especially when anyone who dispose of the dead bird will die. Medicine was way backward too and people back them probably don't have the same immune system as modern day people.
@@korawitbuttramee618people back then almost certainly had better immune systems than us modern people. With the lack of cleaning products, antibiotics and the like, you either developed an immunity to certain things, or you got sick and died. These days we have medicine to cure these things, so our immune system’s never really have to deal with that much in comparison
One thing I want to see more is the members of the council being explored more as characters, there’s still so much we don’t know about them and so much potential to expand the world of shogun.
This episode was epic.. how you ask: I got emotional with Mariko's story and the story with the fantastic acting from the actors is just beyond awesome. I gonna watch this episode few times 😄
The scenes about Blackthorne trying to bring some european taste into the house was also nice. It reminds me of the the book series named the young samurai by Bradford. You guys would love that for sure!
I can't wait for the season to finish so I can fucking rewatch it again that's how I love this series so much! No high budget bullshit effects and it doesn't need a season 2!
I’d say this show is relatable to the first few seasons of vikings..very grounded and as we learn pieces of their culture it makes the characters become more charismatic as time goes by…a masterpiece so far!
Vikings was special, way better then anything like that ever made, GOT or Shogun etc. The anime Kingdom about China is way more action packed then this book adaptation.
I didn’t think that the Clavel books would ever be filmed with comparable quality of story, image, history, &character to the writing. I was wrong. This Shogun is exceptional film. The cast are terrific. Sanada and Sawai deserve Oscars.
I don't think that buntaro is being honest here. I think that he was captured and given an ultimatum. the whole "20 days to return" thing makes it seem like a lot could have happened in that time. So he is now playing a double agent within toranagas clan. I think he will be a big player in the end of this season.... if he makes it that far XD I honestly don't know the next move in this series, honestly, its one of the best seasons I've watched in a long time! long live toronaga sama!
To me the arrows meant more that he was just lying about having too much sake and lashing out on Mariko. He did it all intentional to provoke John. Like he was taunting him or something.
Toda Mariko is the daughter of Akechi Jinsei, who was a general under Goroda (a.k.a. Oda Nobunaga), and the last of her entire clan, . She only survived because when her father led his rebellion against Goroda and of course failed and the entire clan was executed, she was already married into the Toda clan (her husband Buntaro's clan), but even then to ensure the safety of the Toda clan, her husband had to send her away into a form of exile for a few years. Bunturo and her relationship is full of turmoil because on one side he doesn't want to give her up (when she was introduced to the court by her father years ago, nearly every noblemen, including the deceased Taiko, in the realm want her as either wife or consort and Buntaro's father, Toda Hiro Matsu managed to secure her hand in marriage for his son) and on the other side her being married to him brings dishonor to the clan as she is the daughter of the traitor Ju-Sen Kubo. Her feeling towards Buntaro are also affected by him killing or threatening to kill her foster mother and maid(s).
Good episode with the difference in cultures being an interesting focus. Disney+ did have some technical issues with this episode, in Denmark, resulting in a delay in subtitles.
You misunderstood the significance of the arrow in the post shot. it shows tat the excuse of sake and being drunk made no sense. it was merely and excuse and misdirection.
I just started watching your breakdowns, i truly love them and appreciate the depths of the story im getting as i enjoy this show. You have a new subscriber brother 👍🏿
I liked your review... Seen from the point of view of someone who has probably not read the book or watched the mini-series, it makes me appreciate the little details all the more. Thank you
7:33 I don't think that was the point of that shot. I think the main point was that he was blaming it on the sake but then again he can shoot clearly even after drinking all of that sake so he was definitely lying when he blamed it on the sake.
Agreed. He was using the Sake as a cover for showing his ass. When John saw the arrows he realized he was in “total control” even as he was emotionally out of control. He used the Sake to save face.
While the landslide scene was the shocking moment of this episode, I find the domestic scenes to be the highlight. It shows how each value system has it own reason for existing. I wouldn't say giving absolute value to order is the right way to live, but there's always a weight to what one said, especially as a leader. For a country with so much uncertainty, words need to feel like a stability. John is learning things the hard way here.
That dinner and drinking scene at Anjin's house was so good... Fuji-sama facial reaction were impressive. I love how they slowly develop the Fuji's character 👍🏼👍🏼
In later book, it confirm that John live on and has a descendant. Consider that how cute they made Fuji, I said she likely to become mother of John's child. Fuji is John's wife, like it or not his lord made it, it permanent thing.
@@Phattara-n4e Watch episode 4 again particularly the exchange between Mariko and Fujiko. Her husband had to commit seppuku. And her infant son was executed. She doesn't want to be Blackthorne's consort for more than 6 months.
I know im a week late to the discussion but... 1. The arrows hitting the post twice shows how unaffected Buntaro was to the sake. It means his abuse to Mariko is under his control after all. 2. I don't think the idea is "the rock symbolizes beauty" but if its "without a stone a garden is just a place of growing" reflects the society John is in. John believes in true freedom (like his freedom in the highseas) but the society believes that 'more rules and more constraints' is how life should be. But John doesn't understand it yet, at best he's just guilty and is grieving and trying to put meaning to his actions. :(
In the book, Lady Ochiba was in love with Torunaga. Always had been but she was wed to Taiko. She hated Ishido as he was holding her and her son hostage to keep control of them. Perhaps Ochiba hopes Torunaga will kill Ishido.
Yeah I feel like she could just be wanting them to almost take each other out. That way there's less opposition and not as much of a threat to her son's claim to Taiko.
@@BrainPilot I think she wants Torunaga to be Shogun so that they can marry. If He does become Shogun, her son can be Shogun after Torunaga. But I don't think Torunaga feels the same about Ochiba and has several sons of his own. This is going to be interesting.
I still remember watching the original series starring Richard Chamberlain. I loved it then and I am loving this remake even more. Thank you for your insights!
Episode 3: ima fan of buntaro fighting the whole town scene, great samurai sacrifice. Episode 5: buntaro drunk off sake playing Arrow Roulette with Mariko. Im not a big fan of Buntaro anymore. Lol
The battle of sekigahara won't happen before Blackthorne attempts seppuku in front of Toranaga... And then Toranaga says the ominous words to him. 'You are no longer William Blackthorne of England but Anjin Miura Hatamoto of Tokugawa Ieyasu. And i command you to live'
6:45 Some say that if Buntaro (Tadaoki Hosokawa) had sided with Akechi, Akechi might have won. There are many anecdotes that Tadaoki was extremely fond of Gracia, but he did not take sides with Gracia's father.
I'm really liking this series. I didn't see the previous series, but I've read the book several times -- some details are changed, but they are mostly sticking to the book.

@BrainPilot can you also tell me why mariko is so angry to blackthorne and not wanting to speak with him anymore? also their conversation at the sea was interesting. would have loved more inside view of this :) thanks for your reviews! i enjoy them
I think its because she really likes Blackthorn but now her husband is back, she has to break it off with him because if her husband finds out about the two of them, they will both be killed.

I read that Tokugawa eventually granted William Adams the opportunity to go back to England but Mr. Adams ultimately decided to stay. It involves an English ship captain named Saris.
showing us the post being hit in the same spot two times right after the scene of John yelling at Buntaro means that he lied, it wasn't because of sake that he hurt Mariko, because he was in his senses enough to hit the post two times, thats why that was shown, not to tell us what an impressive warrior he is, we already know that from past episodes.
Last episode was 1 step forward in my liking Blackthorns character and this was 2 steps backwards... He had me raging mad the entire time with his lack of understanding and willingness to try to understand. So caught up in his own traditions and self-interests that he ignored everything around him😡 And Toranaga is definitely pulling the strings. He used the artillery promotion to pit Yabushige and Omi against each other. He cant have those 2 unified especially with his idiot son proving to be a handicap rather than strength. Gave him one simple job... Again, loved this episode, loved this breakdown, cant wait until next week!
Well I can understand his rage when they killed the gardener. The few words he does know, he used to say, let the bird simply hang. If they then proceed to literally kill the guy that tried to solve the horrible stench.... And when Blackthorn is horrified they simply tell him, well what's done is done, that doesn't work for people outside of Japan. You will feel guilty and frustrated and then the girl apparently offered him a solution......sacrificing her. Tragic. It would be very unrealistic if they wouldn't clash, especially when John thinks he comprehends certain parts and words.

In his world there are horrible people, kings and masters that torture people. But now imagine someone randomly gives you a title, you're not a king that can decide to burn a village. But, without knowing, you can order someone to be killed with no question. This is incomprehensible, not simply ignorance from a poor foreigner. Can't be a season 2 as the story is as it is and ends in a definitive manner ( victory of a certain daymio , death of a certain central caracter). There would be no point in creating Blackthorne 's adventures after that as his status and position would be clear.
It’s based on a novel. How can there be a 2nd season? However Tokugawa Ieyasu (on whom Toronaga is based) odyssey doesn’t end for another several years after the Battle of Sekigahara (which is where the book ends).
Series 1 will cover the entirety of Clavells' book. Clavell never wrote a direct sequel. Clavell wrote another book on Japan, but it takes place ~260 years later.. So there's no source material for a series 2. If FX/Hulu were very ambitious, they could make mini-series of Clavell's entire Asia Saga which covers specific time periods over 400 years.
@@bani_niba Roots was made into a TV show even though it takes place over multiple generations. They could do the same with the Asian Saga if they wanted. For the most part there wouldn't be direct links between Shogun and the later books but there would be a few connections, such as Blackthorne's descendants showing up in Whirlwind, for example. It seems like they probably won't continue the series since they named the show "Shogun" and not "Asian Saga" and it would seem odd to include the storylines for the books taking place outside Japan in a show titled "Shogun," but I think it would be really cool if they did cover the whole series.
The real person that Lady Ochiba was based on is Yodo Dono (the name is quite similar to John Lennon’s mistress) She has a quality of both Cersei Lannister and Catelyn Stark.
I think it would be interesting if James Clavell's entire Asian Saga series were made into a show instead of just book one. I read it a long time ago but it was a great series. It was the first series I ever read that would kill off major characters seemingly at random, such that no one was inherently safe due to their importance to the plot. I found that really irritating at first but came to like it since it made the books unpredictable and made me appreciate characters' survival, since the chances of them dying were always present.
I loved the ENTIRE series so far. It represents the book wonderfully and does it justice. It is so much better than the original 80's version. It does so much more deeper dive into the side characters, which give it a great depth and richer. What was your interpretation of the look that Fuji gave John as he left her?

John wasn't glad he didn't get into a fight with him. He realised that blaming it on sake was bs. He knew exactly what he was doing.

Mariko's story of her father reminds me of Jaime Lannister a.k.a "The Kingslayer", since they both broke their "oaths" of protecting their Lords and now Mariko and Jaime are taking the consequences.
Me too, is really good comparasion.
It’s based on a true story where Akechi ambushed his lord Nobunaga and killed. Later Taiko (Hideyoshi) chased Akechi and after ruled Japan
But Jaime never really suffered the consequence of killing his King, he wasn't stripped off his position of Kingsguard and no one really hates him for killing the Mad King for being such a terrible human being
@@chaosomega623does the derogatory title “King Slayer” mean anything to you?
This show is the best production shown on tv in decades. Absolutely magnificent. Thank you so very much!!!!!!
Smart
Thats such a good catch. It didnt make sense he would have survived. It would also explain why he doesn't take to Anjin and has all this aggressive hate towards him. If he is a spy thats how he survived and he is taking out his hate on Anjin because its the only one he can take his hate on.
As soon as his survival was confirmed, I thought the same thing.
The reveal that he was unhappily married to a wife from a "despicable" family also comfort that idea.

Moeka Hoshi portrayal of Fuji-san is terrific. Hard to believe only 5 more episodes.

100% agree. In my opinion she's a much better actress than the woman playing Mariko, the small expressions she uses and the body language are amazing and she has a better chemistry with John, while Mariko just seems to be either bored or forcing a crying face whenever she's on screen.
Her acting, the subtle control of her facial features, is simply at another level!
She sexy
@@ryanh2479 She and Yabushige are the best portrayed characters imo.
The sake didnt effect his behavior, thats why they show the arrows.
@@caniblmolstr452 how did he survive the battle then?? I never understood how.
Reality is:-

I have never been so excited to see two people speak to each other in a TV show.

It seems to me that every word spoken has an implied threat.

I don't think that buntaro is being honest here. I think that he was captured and given an ultimatum. the whole "20 days to return" thing makes it seem like a lot could have happened in that time. Yeah it is a great show!
Fuji is my favorite character so far.

So far this was my favorite episode
This is going to be interesting.

showing us the post being hit in the same spot two times right after the scene of John yelling at Buntaro means that he lied, it wasn't because of sake that he hurt Mariko, because he was in his senses enough to hit the post two times, thats why that was shown, not to tell us what an impressive warrior he is, we already know that from past episodes.
Last episode was 1 step forward in my liking Blackthorns character and this was 2 steps backwards... He had me raging mad the entire time with his lack of understanding and willingness to try to understand. So caught up in his own traditions and self-interests that he ignored everything around him😡
And Toranaga is definitely pulling the strings. He used the artillery promotion to pit Yabushige and Omi against each other. He cant have those 2 unified especially with his idiot son proving to be a handicap rather than strength. Gave him one simple job...

I also felt that giving the swords away meant that he was okay with Toranaga protecting him as well.
The real person that Lady Ochiba was based on is Yodo Dono (the name is quite similar to John Lennon’s mistress)
She has a quality of both Cersei Lannister and Catelyn Stark.
Not mistress, wife.
Who is she? What family tree ? With no big spoilers?
@@BackToWar100 She is the wife of previous Shogun
I think it would be interesting if James Clavell's entire Asian Saga series were made into a show instead of just book one. I read it a long time ago but it was a great series. It was the first series I ever read that would kill off major characters seemingly at random, such that no one was inherently safe due to their importance to the plot. I found that really irritating at first but came to like it since it made the books unpredictable and made me appreciate characters' survival, since the chances of them dying were always present.
Honestly speaking .. a great concise review!:)
Glad you liked it!
Great breakdown
Thanks!
I loved the ENTIRE series so far. It represents the book wonderfully and does it justice. It is so much better than the original 80's version. It does so much more deeper dive into the side characters, which give it a great depth and richer. What was your interpretation of the look that Fuji gave John as he left her?
That pair of swords was far from "worthless"- they were good swords, just not given for bravery.
Awesome episode. My heart actually brakes for the gardener
Yeah so sad!
