Shogun is the new FX/Hulu historical drama based on James Clavell's 1975 novel of the same name. In episode 7 Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada) wants to move forward with Crimson Sky but needs more troops. He meets with his estranged half-brother Saieki (Eita Okuno) who ultimately double-crosses him. His vassals, followers, and closest advisors spend the majority of the episode waiting for him to reveal his plan John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis), Mariko (Anna Sawai), and Buntaro (Shinnosuke Abe) continue to have tension regarding her having to work so closely with the barbarian.
We also get a flashback to a young Toranaga and Hiromatsu 46 years earlier in his first battle.

I have so many things to say about this show. It’s crazy. The actors in this show are on another level and I sometimes forget that I am even watching a show because they are so good at what they do. When I watch it, for an hour and 20 minutes, I feel like a fly on the wall and not many shows can do that. This show is something special.

ALSO, Saeki questioning what the beauty was in Nagakado’s death connects back to their encounter in the hot springs when Nagakado says, “If it’s my fate, then it will be a beautiful death” then dies a slow death painful deal after slipping and smashing his head on a rock trying to avenge his father.

It's possible but not likely as the way it played out it doesn't make sense evil brother was in on it as Toranaga himself says his time is up. Also evil brother is in it for himself to grab power so no reason he would align with brother for nothing.

It’s so hurried and immediately disturbed by Mariko’s entrance that very few people noticed it.
I bet next episode a lot of people will be reviewing episode 6, and wondering how the missed it ….
Toranaga never lets his enemies see what's truly behind his fence. They're taught to protect their most inner desire, in his case to be Shogun, so he manipulates everyone into thinking he doesn't want it, and allows them to act in haste and make mistakes.
Toranaga thinks like Ned Stark. Hopefully he doesn't share the same fate.

One thing this episode did was to completely push aside the white savior trope which is so common in these kinds of stories. Blackthorn is mostly ignored.
The episode’s focus is on the Japanese characters in their medieval culture and how they are trying to deal with fate and customs. They are all under tremendous pressure. Some wish for death and Toranaga is frustrated with that. He wants to live and wants his vassals to focus on survival.
Heroic legends tell one story but the episode reveals that real events are often not beautiful or noble. Toranaga sees that actual people are not godlike as in a Noh play. They have doubts, fears and realize their lives hang in the balance. Toranaga does not want to quickly accept death as the lord did in his first battle.
There’s no white savior here. Blackthorn wad always manipulated by toronaga. Ffs. Create your own story why don’t you.
Don't worry the white saviour is coming. John Blackthorne is a key character and the book tells it from his perspective so he'll play a key role in Toranaga redemption. No way John Blackthorne is going to stand on the sidelines doing nothing but play historian. But don't count Toranaga out yet. He's got a few more cards to play and I'm willing to bet John Blackthorne will sail the sea blasting his cannons and likely Toranaga will kill his brother and command his army.

Story is resolved literally around BlackThorn is the "wild card" of Toranaga. An Englishmen that confidently say he can blast Osaka to rubble. Which is true. Although guns are more known to Japanese, Canons artillery are not.
And if you look at East/South east asian history coming to the industrial age, is literally a "white man" go against his own kind to serve the native.
I personally want to see the Anjin walk around with a gun and be this "white saviour". Seen so many samurai kill each other with 1 swing and acting as if they the strongest.
Its a trap. Our local madame knows its a trap.
Toranaga used the earthquake as a way to make his enemies THINK he lost his army.
He hid them. I also think he deliberately had our Anjin blacktorne throw a fit on purpose during his surrender. That allows blackthorne to either sneak away and help set the attack on Osaka, OR its so that his brother and ishido would seek him out as the ally. That way he is position to get close to them.
Toranaga will say his son was working on his own at the end. Which i think he was.
I think toranaga surrendering is the easy way to get him and his troops inside the castle. Knowing that his troops will also commit suicide, they might allow his troops inside the castle.
Thats when crimson sky starts.
It's possible but it would be weird to beg his brother for help if he has a large army still. But nice twist if true. I think we'll still get Crimson Sky and John Blackthorne will get to use his cannons to storm the castle. But it doesn't look good now that evil brother has betrayed him. Pretty sure he will end up killing his brother and command his army.

True but due to the timeline it's possible that he heard 5th council position is gifted to his evil brother before they gather. If he knows this is happening, creating an illusion of he lost his entire army to the earthquake is very suitable to seem weak. All but he and Buntaro's father should be making this plan and know about it and of course there should be a spy who's powerful enough to learn Ishido's secrets fast enough. @@jonfreeman9682
I feel the same. It’s Toranaga’s Trojan horse. They said earlier in one of war discussions that Osaka castle is an impregnable castle. This means they need a good way to get in - and it’s false surrender which needs to be super believable.
I also suppose the Yabu’s generals head is a hoax reply from Osaka and it’s crafted towards giving the impression that Yabu shouldn’t shift when Toranaga surrenders.
Although Pete Peppers take more time than BrainPlot, his videos definitely analyze the deeper meanings behind every episode's quotes and pivotal scenes. Cheers for your quality videos Pete.
They really conveyed the fatalism of ancient Japanese culture better than any media ive seen before. Toranaga not reprimanding Buntaro more harshly was suprising.
Old Japanese culture and samurai way is ridiculous but that's why it's so fascinating.
They reverted back to Hollywood unfortunately. Now nothing makes sense. They try to portray the Japanese culture as senseless, which simply isn’t true, and overthrew many core valuable features of Japanese (and East Asian) culture in general. For instance, in East Asian cultures (China, Japan, Korea as the major ones), a favor or debt is of a life long commitment. The fact that Anjin saved Toranaga several times means that Toranaga would be severely in Anjin’s great debt, as in: a life saved is worthy of a life repaid. So Anjin should be untouchable at this point, unless someone can give evidence to any treachery he supposedly commits. So it’s absolutely ridiculous for Buntaro to petition for his death AND going away unscathed.
Several other stupid things: Mariko’s brazen behavior, many times mistranslating Anjin’s words or omitting things on purpose in front of Toranaga. There is such a crime in old East Asian culture called the “great disrespect,” in which lying to your sovereign is a crime punishable by death. Yet she just brazenly behaves, many times disrespectfully, in front of Toranaga, and Toranaga is just totally okay with it as if he’s her loving grandpa or something
The samurai’s code is also completely disregarded: Buntaro almost killing Anjin when he was weapon less and on the ground. This would be a completely shameful act of a samurai.
Toranaga somehow not having a leash on his idiot son and keeps allowing him to shame him with stupid acts.
And to make things even worse, they somehow created this storyline that the brother of Toranaga can just hide behind a piece of paper to threaten Toranaga, and Toranaga, or his men, not immediately arrest him and hold him prisoner, like any common sense lord would do. This was somehow dressed up in “muhCulture.” Sorry, it’s not in the Japanese feudalist culture to be stupid.
@ luceafarul579 I agree. Back to Hollywood it is. The Zataki argumental change made no sense. I also really dislike the casting of Blackthorne. Chubby and fresh faced for someone who crossed the globe losing most of the men with him, lacking of nuance or finesse for the character with silly outburst at a point where he should have a good grasp of Japanese culture as per the book. And no chemistry with Mariko.

bentaro too saved toranaga many time and is clearly one or if not the best fighter he has and prob top tier in all jap in that time and is one of the most loyal
as for mariko is true he is her lord but to me toranaga is still loyal to her and her father (he was one of her father generals i think) and try to put her and her family back in power,
cause to me toranaga is deeply loyal to her and that kid emperor who is in osaka and don t aim to be shogun , he is doing all of this take revenge for mariko and keep the kid alive from the regents who after dispatching toranaga will strip the kid from any power
@@ugofoscolo2811 yes but Buntaro is his subject from the get go. Anjin OTOH is his prisoner and always wants to leave. So he did much bigger favor toward Toranaga than Buntaro who merely did his duty. In East Asian culture people would understand that and how big of a favor this means. Buntaro just go and demand his head is friggin ridiculous, and if you don’t see that then clearly you don’t know the culture well enough (or old feudalistic societies in general)
As for Mariko, no in feudalist East Asian culture the way she behaves toward her lord would not be okay under any circumstances. Even if she’s a princess and Toranaga is her father it’ll only be acceptable privately. Mariko in the show basically behaves like an entitled American modern feminist housewife.

I think the madam has some of the best plays in this episode! Some of her moves are subtle but she really understands her soft power in each moment and the Actor portrays this amazingly. The exchange with Toranaga is heightened but her clever use of humility and huborus. She straight up calls him out, like "you don't know me. But I know you."
I truly felt the respect(??) when he adds her to the will.

Near the end during the stick time talk, the lady of tea house had me thinking she was goin to offer up some secret "Willow world" hidden ninja army as a 'u scratch mine il scratch urs' deal for the proposed edo tea house idea.

Okay. So, I do not agree that this episode didn't move the action along. It's the opposite. It's obvious from the courtesan scene with Toranaga that her wisdom, like Toranaga's craftiness, are similar, and she points out that no one in *his right mind would not have known about the approaching army. Toranaga DID know, and that's part of his plan, Crimson Sky. The only consistent thing Toranaga has done is to delay by saying he would consider the Council's request, then delaying again saying that he would leave in a day to face the Council in Osaka. This is to buy time so his army in Edo can attack Osaka, and all the while Toranaga's brother will unwittingly take Toranaga straight to where Toranaga's troops will be. This is all planned.

I feel like toranaga plan is to act like he surrendered to his half-brother and go to Osaka with his full army and his half-brother's full army uncontested, Similar to a Trojan Horse tactic, and then do a full surprise attack on Osaka with Anjin ship on the side to penetrate the walls. But Nagakado kept acting like a fool since episode 1. Even Madam Gin knows Toranaga has a trap card lmfao
Toranaga is no fool. The show kept insisting on why does toranaga kept putting his weakend garrison exposed. Like Toranaga wants to show to the spies and his enemies that after the earthquake, he lost his army and is being betrayed by his brother.

I love the individual and collective tension that’s built up within and among the main characters! Gave up reconciling this series with the novel and 1980 series and am instead thoroughly enjoying this series as the standalone masterpiece it continues to unfold as.

I haven't read the books so I could be a million miles off here.
But my theory is blood runs thicker than water and the brother signed onto the council of regeants as part of toronagas cunning plan.
Hinted by the tea house owners own cunning detecting it and asking him why he allowed his Garrison to be taken.
His son dying is potentially an unfortunate price lord toranaga will have to pay for keeping his hidden heart away. All the son wanted was to impress him. Yet lacked the insight and cunning his father had to detect the plan.
I'm assuming toronaga arrives at osaka under the guise of his brothers prisoner therefore a easy way of having two armies inside the Osaka walls.
I'm likely wrong but would be a cool way for it all to go down. Either way, wrong or right I am loving this show
Yea that's plausible although it doesnt make sense that the regents allow both their armies to march into the capital. Escorting a prisoner is usually via a small detachment

Toronaga sets aside a bunch of land for Gin in Edo when he is dictating his will to show he took her seriously and perhaps needed something from her.
Toronaga is stalling. He seems to buying time for the rest of his forces can assemble.

The beauty comment was not in reference to Kiku's beauty, but Nagakato's comment earlier in wanting to have a beautiful death.
The unification of Japan and even the meji restoration very exciting
it’s interesting that in the episode the gardener mentioned the stones and rocks were needed to contrast the life and here they contrast death.
This last episode while beautiful and moody was really frustrating narratively, we're supposed to always keep in mind that he's a wily one, always with trickery up his kimono, so they sell the "surrender" angle hard. I'm really enjoying this production overall, but the episodes only begin to really ramp up near the end of each installment, and I feel they're edging us all a bit too much. The end of the last episode left me depressed and lost, much like all the players not named Toronaga, which was it's intention, and I don't like feeling that way.

I really thought his brother was in on some sort of deception until the final scene. I figure T’s plan involves Anjin and his ship, but other than that I have no idea. I read the book but that was like 40 years ago.
Damn, this series is good. Best things since Chernobyl IMO.
Brother is in on it. The final scene actually showed a little sadnesd from the brother. He wasnt mad that his nephew tried to kill him but rather showing emotions that what the boy did was pointless. A pointless death. As if he wouldnt have died if he only knew what his father and uncle were planning.
Maybe Toronaga still thinks there’s a spy so he and his brother are planning to make it look like surrender - that way they can safely get him and the army right up to Osaka and then enact whatever plan they’ve hatched. I hope that’s it haha
I think Toranaga is counting on the babarian’s stubbornness and strong will to come up with a plan of his own . Reason being he’s still not defined his role in all of this, leaving the window open for John to come up with one when things go south. And we’ve seen this happen before in their escape from Osaka when he was abandoned in the smaller ship.

When child Warlord Toronaga prepares to make his slice, when he is talking to the doomed warlord Misaguchi you can clearly see his ponytail is blocking the slice, no wonder it took him 9 hacks. I think Misaguchi did this deliberately, hoping to leave Toronaga with psychological scars was his only possible revenge.
Also, in episode 3 Toranaga said he "will keep it mind" in response to Yabushige's request to let him in on the plan next time, may foreshadow either a red herring to misinform the double crosser and foes of true intentions, or entrust Yabushige the actual play action that may swing the momentum of their fates.
I just hope to see Fuji show a bit more affection to Blackthorne, even though she knows his heart is with Mariko.

Nice catch on the robe, but besides missing the beauty is a reference to the hot springs and not fucking a sunset, you may have missed the main thrust of the episode.
The episode start and penultimate scene are the same (a surrender to a conquerer in front of his army) and there is a constant reference to fate, in which Toranaga remembers his time as the boy king and his enemy resigning himself to it. This implies that unlike in the first scene, Toranaga is doing everything in his power to avoid the fate that his enemy had: engaging in a fruitless war spin which he will lose and have to commit seppuku. Fate is a sword in Toranaga's hand while most of the other characters are resigned to it (as he seems to be). A lot of delaying is going on here which may also be part of a plan
It's likely this implies that he knew at some level Crimson Sky would fail in the same manner. This may imply he knew either his half-brother was not going to side with him, or, even if he did, that in itself is not enough. By going along with Crimson Sky he has tricked his vassals into losing while appearing to accept their bloodthirsty demands that he wage war directly on Osaka. All in all, something else is going on here.
Unfortunately, I never finished the book, nor remember the miniseries well because I was quite young at the time (
btw the stick of time expression also apply to Chinese literature, the Kung Fu Genre or any historical drama like this one , as it was used like hourglass back in the days before clock was invented

The reason I believe the theory that Saeki is in on Toranaga's plans is because Toranaga refused to tell Saeki the strategy and kept trying to push it to another day. But when he surrendered he explicitly said "oh by the way we aren't going to do Crimson Sky". Was that code to his Saeki? Toranaga's men looked defeated. It could also work where Saeki believes Toranaga is surrendering then Toranaga uses him to get into the castle and implement Crimson Sky.
They probably working together to get to Osaka with their full combined army.
Show, don't tell. Perfectly mastered in this show. Take note Hollywood.

something tells me the showrunners are going to diverge significantly from the book and the 1980 miniseries - there are so many events remaining in the book after this point - plus the fact that nagakado doesn't die in the books - and i can't imagine they could cover all the events in only three episodes left. also the pace of the show so far means that a lot of book action will have to be left out.
Can't help wondering if they are trying to leave themselves a way to have a season 2.
A personal theory I have about Saeki's wardrobe in this episode: Many of the characters in the show have a sort of color coding to them - Toranaga is often dressen in gold or yellow, Mariko almost always wears pale blues and greys, Kiku is always in red. Saeki, no matter which outfit he wears, is always in white. In Japanese culture white is a color closely associated with death, a bit like how black is the mourning color in many western countries. Considering the significance of Saeki's robe and how often his conversations revolve around death and dying, I'm almost certain this was fully intentional and that the color of his clothes was a subtle forshadowing that his arrival signals a turn for the worse.
Toronaga immediately left by boat when he first reached Izu. Then he intentionally placed his "army" in the way of a landslide even after the baby earthquake first hit. He then mouthed off about his plan to invade Osaka castle in front of everyone, even those he knew were communicating with the enemy, only to later call it off in the same manner. Last but not least, he intentionally showed his supposedly decimated army camp to his brother whom he almost certainly knew had been bought by the queen mother.
So my bet is his army was never decimated, and the bulk of his forces were relocated prior to the landslide and ordered to prepare for an attack, and he organized everything when he first left after reaching Izu. He's just manipulating everyone around him to make his enemies believe he's out of moves by keeping even his most trusted servants out of the loop. At least that's what I would have done, because I'd be outnumbered and the success of my plan would hinge on absolute secrecy and unpreparedness of my enemy.

Saeki’s character seems to parallel Lando in Star Wars. He’s supposed to be Toronaga’s ally but Ishido got to him first. What if seeing his nephew die makes him feel bad, so he betrays Ishido and joins his brother? What if…::shudders::…that was toranaga’s plan all along and nagakado didn’t die in vain but was sacrificed to turn Saeki
Well Lando was forced to or his sky city would be taken over while evil brother was in it for power and greed. In the end Lando turned good to save his friend Han but this evil brother seems beyond redemption. Don't think Toranaga planned this and likely he'll end up killing his brother and maybe take over his army.
Or what if Nagakado acted independently as he did before, seeking honor and his father's approval only to wind up slightly less bloody but just as dead as Jozen? Saeki didn't "see his nephew die", he saw his nephew trying to kill him. Who do you logically suppose he'll think ordered the hit?
The last few episodes have been slow, I'm not sure exactly how they will play so much out in the last next and final 3 episodes. I also hope the colour palette changes from grey and orange, I feel like we've been in the same forest and room since the escape from Osaka. Other than that, enjoying every moment!

I don't 100% totally remember the books, but I feel like although Crimson Sky has already been declared, we are still getting some of the events (or at least the vibes) from a time in the book where Crimson Sky had not yet been declared.

I agree that scene between Lord Toranaga and Mariko was a powerful one. IMO, Toranaga loves Mariko like a niece. He was close friends with her father and saw her grow up. I'm a fatalist and I think I understand Lord Toranaga's character. He's said goodbye to close friends and has no desire to see any more death of loved ones. However, he accepts his and the fates of loved ones. I suspect he will find vengeance. He just hasn't seen it, yet.
I don't see why they needed Blackthorne-focused episodes if they never planned on integrating him or utilizing him at even half the pace the original show and book did. Also, this show seems to be going precisely against the narrative-elements they've already introduced. For instance: Buntaro causes a ruckus at Blackthorne's house in the evening and then puts himself through public humiliation in apologizing- which Blackthorne does not accept, as far as I could tell.
He then decides to put a sword up to Toranaga's Hatamoto's neck, in public, in 'broad daylight' (it's always raining in Vancouver) and has absolutely no repercussions from any of his liege lords.
Worse, every opportunity they have to show Blackthorne integrating in any way- such as perhaps making a small response to Yabu during his beach-side confession, they instead have Blackthorne stupidly and blankly stare at all the actors. Chamberlain's rendition of the Anjin had him picking up even the physical cues of the Japanese actors and reacting to body-language. Here, it appears Blackthorne is told by the director to 'stay quiet and stay still.' If this show had 2 seasons, this episode might be looked back upon with favour. Since it's a mini-series and time is precious, I feel like this episode's contents could have been done in 30 minutes, not 55. The 'tensions' established and the 'rules' of Japan established in prior episodes seem to be waved away when it's useful to move characters around.
When The uncle asks "where is the beauty in this ", I think he's more referring to what The young guy who bangs his head said earlier. The two young guys were in the bath and the uncle is giving them some trouble. The kid says his death will be beautiful. I think the uncles words at the end where about that comment.
I'm really curious to see how they wrap this entire show with only three more episodes it's sad that it's almost over

What happens at the end doesn’t prove his brother isn’t in on it. I could just prove that reckless Nagakado wasn’t in on it.
I mean considering Toranaga knows how reckless his son can be and considering he showcased how much he cares about him one would think that he would at least give a hint to his son to not behave recklessly if not put him up to date with his plan ? Doesn't make sense imo .
In scene with Toronaga and Gin, Gin says that its not smart to leave an army in the open because spys are everywhere, insinuating that Toronaga's army is secretly larger. He surely may have made more allies around Japan that disagrees with Ishidos machinations.
Toranaga may have a cris cross in his pocket.
I may be wrong of course, but my current theory is that Blackthorn leaving at the end was not a spontaneous outburst but something he and Toranaga planned together.
Earlier in the episode Blackthorn explains to Mariko how he could get the ship ready to sail with only a handful of people, before Mariko shuts him down. A recurring thread between Blackthorn and Toranaga especially in this episode is also that Blackthorn doesn't know WHY Toranaga is keeping him around - he is not a soldier, so useless as a general or warrior. He is a skilled sailor who knows naval warfare, but Toranaga repeatedly refuses to let him get on his ship. So...what exactly does he want from him? There is also the exchange between Blackthorn and Yabushige where Yabushige shows him how to properly hold his sword. Again Blackthorn reiterates that he is not warrior, he is a sailor.
Blackthorn has also in previous episodes talked about just how much damage just his ship alone could do in the bay of Osaka.
When Saeki demands the formal response from Toranaga, he takes all or at least most of his men (who up until this point had kept the area under surveillance) with him. This would leave the Erasmus unguarded, or perhaps only watched by a skeleton crew that Blackthorn and a few others could eliminate.
When Toranaga speaks to Gin, he says he doesn't have enough time left to grant her the means she requests to build the teahouse district in Edo, yet a few scenes later he EXPLICITLY has it noted in (what I assume to be) his last will that Gin will receive a plot of land in Edo, hinting that he may not be as resigned to his fate as he pretends to be.
And of course there is the scene between Blackthorn and Toranaga where Blackthorn tells him that "he is ready", for whatever his Lord may ask of him.
This would also be a brilliant use of Blackthorn's role as the "foreign barbarian". At least twice in the episode he is told to watch his conduct, even though we can see he has grown much more adjusted to Japanese customs, like when he greets Saeki. It's not perfect but far from how he acted at the start.
getting up at the meeting and talking smack there is of course completely unacceptable behavior, but nobody berates him because they don't expect him to be able to behave. No one stops him either when he leaves because he is just the rude, dumb barbarian right? If any of the other Hatamoto would have attempted to leave they would have been cut down.
Its also important to remember that Toranaga was always planning on going to Osaka; that is after all what "Crimson Sky" meant, a tactical assault on Osaka. The earthquake disrupted his plans because it killed so many of his men, but Gin points out he could easily have found out about Ishido's deal with Saeki and the army moving in.
If Toranaga had attempted to reach Osaka with the sad remains of the army he has currently around him (I think Omi mentions there is another force in Edo that he wants to message before he is shut down), he would never make it. Osaka is in control of the council, Ishido and Lady Ochiba and heavily fortified.
But how convenient! With his "surrender" he and all of his men are now being escorted directly to Osaka by Saeki's forces, isn't that a neat coincidence.
Toranaga always plays on drawing out conflict. Had he refused, he and all of his forces would have been decimated by Saeki. Going from Izu to Osaka will take days. Days he now has to adjust his strategy.
This would satisfy Blackthorn's desire to have a more active role in the war, and also be another way to showcase just how much of a tactical thinker Toranaga is.
We do not yet know the details of 'Crimson Sky.' How many of Nobutatsu's men will enter Edo with him and will they be instrumental in defeating the castle's defenses from within while Toranaga's army is at the gates? I have not read the book. But these are my thoughts.
Its been a long while since I read the novel but I believe there's been a major deviation from the original story
if you can't defeat them from the outside, start it in the inside.

1. Toranaga knew he was about to be “betrayed”
2. He left himself vulnerable anyway
Either:
A) he is taking a huge gamble that he can manipulate his brother into not killing him immediately; or
B) he is confident his brother will play along but not actually kill him immediately
Either is possible; tv shows often have illogical plots. But I think this show is smarter than (A).
You might have something there, so when he shows up with his army and Taras army comes along, his army can get inside the castle then it’s a win-win that it’s a win
And also why he’s so sad when the sun fell, and broke his head for nothing really
I kind of wish they had added a little bit more drama to Nagakado dying than just a botched assassination attempt. While fitting given his behavior, there was room for so much more tension if he were, say, captured or simply ran away.
I think that's the point. Sometimes, there's no glory behind dying. Nagakado wanted a great death, but died an idiot.
It seemed very tragic and sad to me. Him just bleeding out in the rain. didnt need drama

The fact the famed samurai who flies pigeons for Toranaga as spy is hovering below the radar this episode, you'd think the writers of the show is setting him up for a deus ex machina. Perhaps Toranaga's walk of shame back to the Regents' castle in Osaka may be the opportunity for Crimson Sky to sneak up from the looming dark clouds.
The most action from the past 2-3 episodes was the geisha house.
I'm also confused by Gin's comments to Omi. First, she tells him she cannot discuss the details of JB's nite at her tea house. Then, she gives him the juiciest piece of gossip from last nite. Everything she does is tactical, but I cannot fathom any tactical advantage she'd gain from stirring the pot btwn Buntaro and JB. I doubt this would please Toranaga to hear that she had done this and I'm sure he had spies in her tea house that gave him a full report. And yes, she was correct at the end to question why Toranaga would leave himself so vulnerable to his brother. Altho the fates have thrown him some curve balls with the earthquake and the stupid actions of his son that were unpredictable.
Well.... if this is going to go based on the historical events. Mariko about to die, and in the books, they shaped it that it was in Osaka castle barracading a door. This is a setup for a kamikaze mission. It's probably gonna be a big explosion like the great Sept in Game of Thrones... instead of dragon fire, they got gun powder.
Shouldn't Yabushige and Buntaro be punished for attacking Blackthorne since he's their Lord?
Something happened in episode 6, 44:15 ….. hurried and fleeting …
I watched this episode feeling like a compass needle swinging around wildly trying to determine true north. Even after repeated viewing, much is still unclear. For instance, if Blackthorne has cottoned to Toranaga's no-plan plan, at what point did he reach that understanding? At the beach, Buntaro about to slit his throat? He placates Buntaro by 'submitting' to his fate, just as Toranaga puts Saeki and the regents off their guard by his submission. Mariko's reaction to Blackthorne's breaking decorum is noticeably restrained. How much does she know?
It’s time to stop both the comparisons between this show the novel and historical accuracy. It’s a far departure from both. Especially with this latest death

It's a great thing Yabushige challenged Blackthorne because I assumed he knew how to use the swords. Why give him all these gifts and titles and he doesn't know how to use a sword? He's been there for over 6 months training the army, that was plenty of time to at least learn the basics of sword use.
They wrote him to be dumb on purpose. It's 7 episodes in he isn't going to get any smarter.
Blackthorne isn't trained to fight Japanese style, but he's effectively an educated naval officer from a well-off family. Of course he should know how to use a sword, they are writing him to be a bit dim.
