Let me guess. In Episode 9, Mariko rides on a dragon and burns down entire Osaka. Blackthorne kills her and Yabushige takes the throne in EP10. That is how it should end.
After rewatching episode 8 for a second time, I think that I better understand what happened in the pivotal scene where Hiromatsu committed seppuku. It now seems to me that it was NOT pre-arranged for Hiromatsu to commit seppuku to sell the ruse. I think that was a brilliant improvisation by Hiromatsu after he saw that the other vassals were confronting Toranaga about going to Osaka as being a ploy. To save the situation, Hiromatsu came up with the improvised brilliant idea of committing seppuku to crush any doubt that going to Osaka was genuine and not a ploy. When Toranaga tries to persuade Hiromatsu not to comit seppuku, he says to Hiromatsu: "Then die by my side at Osaka." There is genuine feeling in Toranaga's eyes and his manner seems to indicate that he is pleading with Hiromatsu not to do this ultimate act of sacrifice which Hiromatsu has just proposed. Hiromatsu then replies: "You are throwing away all that we have fought for." I think that this is Hiromatsu's coded way of telling Toranaga that there is no choice, but for him to die in order to save the secret plan from unravelling (all that they they have fought for) and to convince any spies that there is no secret ploy and that Toranaga is actually surrendering. Toranaga then looks over at the dissenting vassals (who might be spies), and sees that Hiromatsu is correct--there is no other way but for this tragic sacrifice to be made by Hiromatsu. Wow. Very powerful stuff.
Very well said... Great analysis... This is all for Crimson sky and for Ishido to lower their guard... Because by toranaga charging head on to Osaka is sucide

@@jayegeecorporate8788 he died for a cause far greater than his life and Hiromatsu knew that. He may not have died in battle, but his death is as honorable as those slain in combat. He is the epitome of "Honor and Duty".
So he understands her pain. But no one seems to get that she has denied him for so long. No one empathizes with him. He had already felt what it means to be denied. Worse yet he has seen the one who denied him give it to a barbarian. Her duty to her father was to live and fight YET she continually begs for death. Her duty to Bantaru was to be a good living and obedient submissive and fake it YET she goes it if her easy to tell anyone who will listen that she won't even fake it.
@@PopeyeSailor-wz7ewexcept they have a kid together soooo she didn’t deny him and “give it the barbarian”. Her interest in the foreigner was more of an escape than true love. You can tell Mariko thinks much differently of Blackthorne in the last two episodes.
The Buntaro and Mariko scene broke me--it was full of emotions on such a simply designed room, and the camera work really stood out showcasing the distance between the two. The seppuku of Hiromatsu really has that Japanese period drama feel to it--and the acting is superb! Also, the church going to be near the tea house. Priceless!
Amazing scene. The tea ceremony is my favourite moment in the book. It is beautifully described and Buntaro is regarded as a master of the ceremony. It takes place at night in the book, and he scrubs the paving stones, scatters water over the leaves leading up the tea room to make it sparkle in the torchlight, and they have a very calm moment together, reciting poetry. I also liked it in daytime and I appreciated how they opened it by reciting poetry.
Yes😊The kakejiku (Hand written words on the wall)said “the willows are green flowers are red “It means Beautiful as it is . Looks like Buntaro😊Buntaro wanted to Mariko transform into his ideal wife but she didn't.She is a wild horse type😆
The reason why the land given to the red light district and church was muddy is that Edo, later Tokyo, was originally a wetland which several rivers run through. In the course of development, the ground was filled. The scene where the castle is under construction probably indicates that the city is still under development. This drama is really well made down to the smallest details.
Hiroyuki Sanada’s acting performance is just moved me to tears in this episode, he does indeed deserves an EMMY AWARD for acting, such a beautiful and powerful acting from the legend!
He did such a great job of capturing the stoicism but also the inner conflict of him trying to hold it together at the same time know his old friend was going to kill himself as part of his plan
the official FX podcast clarified that Hiromatsu dying was not part of the Crimson Sky plan. The plan was to have lords who will not surrender to commit seppuku. It would have achieved the same effect, that Toranaga's clan was in shambles and Toranaga is committed to surrender. However, Horimatsu chose to sacrifice himself instead of the others. In a way, this was Hiromatsu's personal touch to make it all the more convincing. All the same, Toranaga's choice to let this happen shows his resolve.
It's awfully dumb sacrificing your best general to achieve what exactly? A ruse that isn't even needed? Drama for the sake of drama? A Queen sacrifice for no advantage is a bad move. Regardless Crimson Sky is happening and whether Ishida believes in the surrender or not is inconsequential. His hold on power is shaky without Ochiba but he did wisely place his cronies on the council.

At first, I thought Omi was just there to manipulate Nagakado, but I think he just wanted to save Yabushige from going back to Osaka. Seeing Omi's genuine mourning for Nagakado, I'd like to think that they are indeed true friends. Also, Sanada's acting is so brilliant in the part where Hiromatsu commits seppuku.
He use the death of his own son and a life of his life long friend to built a stepping stones to victory. that is cold as fuck but also require the strongest heart.
I wasn't expecting them to put so much depth into Buntaro's character but man, they have done a great job with his character. Also Nagakado's death wasn't completely in vain as it allowed Toronaga 49 extra days to prepare.
Yes. I think that it is clearly hinted in the final scene of episode 8 that Toranaga knew that his impulsive and simple-mindedly loyal son would do something rash and get killed, thus giving him 49 extra days. Toranaga didn't know that his son would slip and die, but he knew that his son would rashly attack Saeki and die in the process--and Toranaga was counting on his son's death so that he could capitalize on it.

Great episode! The acting in this one was superb. The seppuku was carried out beautiful and the expressions were so emotional. I am a huge fan of the 1980s mini-series but I must say this is truly a great telling of the story. Hiroyuki Sanada is absolutely great as Lord Toronaga. I think Toshiro would have been so proud to see him play that roll. The only thing from the 1980s mini-series that I miss is the banter between Fathar Alvida and Blackthorne. That was so entertaining. Otherwise, this show has past my expectations and I cannot wait to see the final 2 episodes but will be sad when they are over.
old man Hiromatsu was based on historical figure "Torii Mototada". He served Tokugawa (Toranaga) since his lord was still a kid. When Tokugawa was running from Ishida Mitsunari (Ishido), Mototada volunter to be the rear guard, Even though he can run, In an act of loyalty to his lord Tokugawa Ieyasu (Toranaga) Mototada chose to remain behind, honoring his friend & lord's request, and defend fushimi castle, which block the way to edo (His Lord's base). He defend it with only 1800 men against Ishida's (Ishido) 40.000. Their held for 12 days, killing thousands of enemies, until only 10 men remaining, including Mototada and then they do ritual suicide / seppuku. This sacrifice buyed time for Tokugawa to raise 90.000 troops and raise his army's morales to face Ishida (Ishido) at Sekigahara. Mototada's suicide at the fall of Fushimi Castle is one of the most celebrated acts of seppuku in Japanese history. In honor & battle, he is perhaps the greatest samurai. Mototada last words to his lord before they parted ways sadly knowing that they would never see each other again : "....I am resolved to make a stand within the castle and to die a quick death. It would not take much trouble to break through a part of their numbers and escape, no matter how many tens of thousands of horsemen approached for the attack or by how many columns we were surrounded. But that is not the true meaning of being a warrior, and it would be difficult to account as loyalty. Rather, I will stand off the forces of the entire country here, and ... die a resplendent death."
If u keep in mind that Hiromatsu son + grandson also died by seppiku, we have 3 generations of 1family bloodline died by taking their own lives in service to their lord
@ismayafaradillah1568 the father did seppuku, together with his infant son. The series didn't show how they did it. Later on Hiromatsu delivered their ashes to Fuji.
That scene was one of the most gut wrenching things I have ever seen on TV. I usually watch the episodes more than once just to pick up details but I m skipping this one. Felt like losing a grandpa.
People complain about the lack of action in the series but I think the deaths that we get are all impactful. Nagakado's got under my skin and this one hit even harder. I could not only feel for Buntaro having to second his father but also Toronaga sacrificing his longest and closest friend.
@@stevebubbie1126I suggest looking into the Onna-musha. Though I doubt that Mariko would have been one of them, there were women warriors at that time.

As far as I'm aware the plan wasn't for Hiromatsu's death to happen there and then. It was to draw the ones who disagreed into doing Seppakku. Everyone is playing checkers while Toranaga is playing chess, using his best pieces to checkmate Ishido once and for all. I feel like Nagakado's death is what led Toranaga to conjure this plan of his since he now has 49 extra days. Also if you noticed the end of episode 7 when Nagakado died, the pond where he fell turned blood red. The colour Crimson also symbolizes blood so in other words the pond turned Crimson and as we know, ponds and water bodies in general reflect the colour of the sky signifying that Nagakado's death is what led to Crimson Sky. Another masterpiece episode from this amazing show, eventough I knew Toronaga would never give up. I still thought he would due to Saneda's immaculate acting. Definitely one of the best shows I've ever seen.
This was a very amazing episode. The awe-inspiring loyalty and self-sacrifice of Hiromatsu to further the cause of his liege lord and friend was incredibly emotional to watch. The eye-contact between Lord Toranaga and Hiromatsu during Hiromatsu's seppuku was the best moment in the series to date for me. The unspoken gratitude and grief in Toranaga's eyes as his most loyal and trusted general sacrificed his life to sell the desperate scheme to Ishido brought tears to my eyes. And to add even more emotional impact to the scene, we see Buntaro have to act as second to his own father's suicide, and being refused the privilege of killing himself as well, and being ordered to continue serving Lord Toranaga, which Buntaro must in his heart blame for his father's death (as he is unaware of the greater scheme that is unfolding). The reactions of Yabushige and his nephew Kashigi Omi are also riveting to watch and really add atmosphere and complexity to the entire scene. Well done! I can not wait until episode 9 is available to watch!
I was hoping Torenaga would stop Hiromatsu at the last second before commiting sepuku just like when he stopped his son from opening that letter ordering his own sepuku.
Man… so many emotions in this one. I went through that whole seppuku scene talking to myself saying… “he’s not really going to let him do it is he? No way… can’t be… but it looks like he is… he’ll stop him at the last second… for sure he will… holy CRAP he actually did it!” Poor Buntaro… he’s really been put through the ringer.
I find your definitions and understanding to be exemplary in your explanation. Your spoiler surprises me, but I am a faithful to analyzing these episodes as well. Thank you for helping me get there.....waiting for the next episode breathlessly.
its crazy how the actor playing toranaga could convey so much by just staring at the camera, anyone that was paying enough attention to the show could see that he was not about to go peacefully into that good night and his friend also understood the assignment and sacrificed himself for the greater good of the cause. masterful show, its all I can say about it
There is a famous scene in the 1986 film "Mona Lisa", where Bob Hoskins is in a taxi. The camera closes in on his face, and for what feels like an eternity, he sits silently, his face awash with a mix of emotions, that says more than words ever could. Watching Hiroyuki Sanada (as Toranaga) witnessing the death of his lifelong friend, Hiromatsu, reminded me so much of the "Mona Lisa taxi" scene. Hiroyuki Sanada is a great actor.
As a foreigner for over a decade (curiously in Japan as well) I could really relate to John's feelings this episode. I don't know much of the author of the novel but he really conveyed the feeling we get when we live abroad for a long time, deep down we know we don't belong in the country we live in, but we also no longer belong back home. So we are stuck in a strange limbo.
@@drakko1635 honestly, I never got how real warriors back then allowed themselves to harm their own wife, their partner, their mother of their children. The true meaning of being strong is being able to have discipline of your strength.
I think the scene where mariko goes on board the ship and tells she has to escort yabushige to osaka means she has to escort them WITH the ship to provide assault by sea. Torunaga probably calculated they would be on the ship allied together so he just needed to send mariko to assure them they are not giving up and they are going to war.
The interesting question at this point: Did / how can Blackthorne convince Yabushige to give him back his cannons instead of bringing them to Osaka. At the moment his ship is defenseless. Is this really already a done deal? Being the guy he is, Yabushige might decide to take them with the ship to Osaka, so he can still decide what to do later.
Man Toranaga is the boss he is so clever and tactical he is very well guarded in the way he is thinking, plotting and finally acting...cant wait for the last two episodes 😎💪🙏
The tea ceremony did it for me. I have been waiting for this show to give more depth and insight into period Japanese culture, and the lack of the likes of a scene which allows viewers to experience Zen made this series too popularized and modernized for my liking. The contrast between the meditative and contemplative aspects of the ceremony, the exactitude of each moment in the making of the the tea, the body positions of the husband and wife juxtaposed by the depth of meaning in the in words softly spoken.....it is a very poetic moment in television history and the creators need congratulating. I especially appreciated the emotion shown by Buntaro yet steering away from over acting. It made the show more authentic and I will enjoy it more when the series is done and I can binge watch the whole series again.
Episode 8 is truly a masterpiece. It stands out as the pinnacle of the series, boasting unparalleled power, sharpness, and depth. I absolutely loved it.
i was blown away by this episode - the emotions of the actors were magnificent and deeply touching! very outstanding! although toranaga is my favourite, i was also fascinated by hiromatsu's performance here!
I agree! I have guess from last episode that the plan was for Saeki to pretend to "escort" a "defeated" Toranaga to the gates of Osaka, only to reveal his true allegiance. This was the only way for Toranaga to get to Osaka without being destroyed along the way, as the forces arrayed against him are too powerful for him to fight his way to Osaka. I hope that this is how it turns out!
Hard to believe how every following episode can get better and better.. but here we are! My blood froze at that seppuku.. Jeez! The writing of this is flawless. ...

Excellence personified with every beating moment. This has been one of the most fascinating and at times, quite brutal story but the cast and crew should be acknowledged for presenting an epic series for our entertainment. Love each character in their own right. Well done Shogun. 👏👏👏
If you're enjoying this series, you should read Clavell's novel. It is even more complex, deep, and rich than the series is. It's a bit unfortunate that the FX series has diverged so much from it. Sadly, what Shogun truly needs and deserves is at minimum a two season series. I'm not saying this series is terrible by any means, however it could have been so more.
I'm glad Toranaga thanked Nagakado, because I thought he would be upset with his son for dying in vain, but this proves that Nagakado's death was always meaningful.
What's curious is that when I look at the reactions of Japanese people on Twitter, there's no one who misunderstands Hiromatsu's seppuku or Toranaga's intentions, saying things like "Tora is a cruel dictator!" or "Hiro died in vain!" I've been searching in Japanese, and I haven't seen a single person yet. Perhaps we Japanese people, compared to Westerners, have been exposed to our own history and the fiction based on it since we were young, so Hiromatsu's actions are very easy for us to understand. In Japanese history, there have truly been many people who committed seppuku for their lords. We've been told such stories since we were little. Therefore, Hiromatsu's actions and Toranaga's actions don't seem tricky at all to us Japanese people. Rather, it seems like a very classical and straightforward portrayal. And that's precisely why it's so moving. Well, our constitution that leads to such understanding also led to the tragedies of the kamikaze and gyokusai (fights to the last man) in World War II. Anyway, what I want to say is that this scene is particularly Japanese in the series. So, I can understand that there are people who can't comprehend it
So do you think Hiromatsu committed Seppuku out to genuinely protest to his lord Surrendering or did he knowingly commit Seppuku to further his Lord's ruse? If the latter is true, was Hiromatsu informed of the plan by Toranaga before he got to the room, or did he figure it out himself during that particular scene?
Lady Mariko's words were so savage basically saying "I wanna die, but not with YOU. If that's what you want I'll rather live in suffering forever.". It's the greatest level of contempt you can have for anyone. ps. I love how the reunion scene with the sailors start of with the sound of flies, cus that level of dirtiness was what we associated with John in the beginning.😅

Hiromatsu's "Now you'll know what it is to be denied" was amazing, especially that whole scene

I wish Ken Watanabe was also cast on this series. It is still a great series worthy of multiple Emmy and Golden Globe nominations/awards.
@@MiddleAgedGeek Ken Watanabe should be the one playing Toranaga.
Omi is a seriously skilled actor. He can speak with expressions
So true! I thought the same about Hiromatsu
The face of the priest when he realized who the neighbor of the church will be. Well, fair play for me honestly. After going to the pleasure house, one can simply go to the church to ask for forgiveness....
In the Bible, there was a prostitute named Mary of Bethany who washed Jesus feet and asked for forgiveness. Jesus then forgave all her sins
Nowadays there are no more churches in Europe but bars and mosques...shairah law is coming
Toranaga is very thoughtful! It's like in my neighborhood having a gym next to a krispy kreme
After 20 years, Europe will be like Islamabad
Not really ask forgiveness, more likely ask protection against STD 😅
At first, I thought Omi was just there to manipulate Nagakado, but I think he just wanted to save Yabushige from going back to Osaka. Seeing Omi's genuine mourning for Nagakado, I'd like to think that they are indeed true friends.
Also, Sanada's acting is so brilliant in the part where Hiromatsu commits seppuku.
He use the death of his own son and a life of his life long friend to built a stepping stones to victory. that is cold as fuck but also require the strongest heart.
Wow! He took 'human sacrifice' to a whole new level??
Yes,Taiko hideyoshi said “It's so lonely to be on top“ befor he dies and he lost his friend Rikyu too.
I mean he didnt intended to lose his son. His son acted on his own idea. He just turned it into something useful.

Mototada last words to his lord before they parted ways sadly knowing that they would never see each other again :
"....I am resolved to make a stand within the castle and to die a quick death.

I wonder how Hiromatsu's baby grandson committed seppuku. Can you explain?
@ismayafaradillah1568 the father did seppuku, together with his infant son. The series didn't show how they did it. Later on Hiromatsu delivered their ashes to Fuji.

People complain about the lack of action in the series but I think the deaths that we get are all impactful. Nagakado's got under my skin and this one hit even harder. I could not only feel for Buntaro having to second his father but also Toronaga sacrificing his longest and closest friend.

He knew what needed to be done. So powerful!

For the first time I felt sorry for bontaro.
I felt for Buntsro, first rejected by his wife, then having to Second his father and worse, refused to be allowed to follow him.
An outstanding show that focuses on Japanese culture rather than putting it in a western theme. The acting is absolutely outstanding and I agree with earlier comments that the actors should be up for Emmy Awards for this show. It is the best show streaming at the moment and I will miss it terribly when it ends.
Damn, Marilo was so mean to Buntaro, all she had to say was "our Lord won't allow this, we have to uphold our duties for now."
So many explanatory blogs says it all.
Lady Ochiba, was the only one at Osaka, who questioned Toranaga surrendering... Ishido, is so confident he has all of his bases covered...an smite with Lady Ochiba..
Ishido are strong warrior, but he not that smart, thats why Ochiba pick him, a great warrior to control.
I find this series hard to recommend , its takes a certain type to understand and enjoy the suttle power and wisdom of this cultural era , here's to the profound.

Honestly, i am not entirely sure Torunaga is the good guy in this haha. Because rewatching the first couple of episodes, he is quite suspicious and i would understand why the other council members are suspicious of him and want to surpress him. He is the only one of them that can become shogun and torunaga seems to do things to kind of egg them on and once they attack him or retaliate to him he kinda turns it around and pins as an “oh you see, they are after me!” Scenario
@@kevinsmoon3257 I don’t think there’s a good guy in this show…but torunaga was asked by the previous shogun to take his place after death and he declined so i think he’s the most fit to be shogun
@@kevinsmoon3257 this just war, if he not cunning, all his generals and family just stupidly die, he try he best make a plan, even if it heartwracking plan.
@@samuelikhine1986 oh yeah i totally agree i think i used the wrong term. But basically i dont think anyone is black or white, i think they are all gray in terms of good and evil
I found this episode really interesting as my hope that Toranaga had a plan was confirmed and we learned that Ngakado’s death was not pointless as it bought Toranaga time. This along with the fact that we can assume that Hiromatsu’s death was not out of dishonour but actually quite the opposite, which relieved me but it was also emotional which Hiroyuki Sanada (Toranaga) showed amazingly through his facial expressions.
You explained it so perfectly.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed!
The actor behind the Hiromatsu role deserves every award.
Yeah he was great in this episode
Brilliant episode
Damn this show knows how to keep you locked in, am impressed. Toranaga is way smarter, this man is unpredictable. I don't know what's gonna happen.
Yeah he's such a great character!
Next episode about to be insane !
I knew that cough was bs 😂
Lord toranaga needs more than an army to help carry his MASSIVE BALLS
MIND BLOOOOOOWNNNNN! The bar is set high for episode 9 and 10.
Yeah it's gonna be epic!
