Thank you for this video. You really take the time to show where to put your hook and where not to put your hook when creating stitches. This is really important when someone is learning the different types of stitches.
Excellent excellent excellent. Clear crisp clean verbal instructions, good explanations for all the terminology and translations/alternatives. The visuals are outstanding. It’s really is like being in a live class. The addition of subtitles across the screen ensures complete universal access to anyone interested in crochet. Well done, it’s no mean feat to get all bases covered, and to do so in such a professional manner. So congratulations, and thank you very much. You offer an immediate and effective service. Just perfect. Much love, light and peace people, wherever you may be in the world, be kind to yourselves and each other. X Be the change you want to see.
I've read it, I've seen it in the hook and in patterns and now I can finally say I understand it and can make it. Thanks for your videos! They are brilliant.
Brilliant! I hate making chains and having to go back and stitich into each chain and realise at the end I hadn't counted correctly! This is so much more efficient
Your tutorials are always so clear and easy to understand - thank you. I get very confused with the UK and USA terminology, so it's great that you explain it.
I see a few "dislikes" selected for this video and I have NO idea why anyone would have clicked that! This is, literally, the clearest explanation of how to do foundation stitches that I've ever watched. Thank you so much, Laura!! I honestly think I can master this now. :)
Hi!! I hope you'll see this. I've watched the other videos (like, 3 videos) on single crochet foundation stitch and they ALL turned out wonky. I was like this isn't right, so then I watched yours and its perfect! I can work on my second row without thinking "ummm this is definitely not right" 😂 THANK YOU so much! Xx
I’m just starting a new project and almost all my past experience has been in the round. I may have to watch it a few more times, but this is going to make things so much easier! It may be serendipity, but thanks for the timely assist.
Thanks Laura for explaining how to do the foundation stitch. I always get confused to where I need to put my hook after I had created the first stitch. Now I know where I was going wrong and will use this more often.
Thank you so much for all of your videos! You explain things so well and you have such a calming voice. I see where I was going wrong with this in the past. Can't wait to try it out again! :)
First off, I LOVE this video. I wanted to find a tutorial that included instructions for how to do all three types of foundation stitches and this video hits the nail on the head. Just a question, is there a reason to insert under only the back loop for the very first chain (as opposed to going under the "v" like you do for all of the other stitches)?
You are more than welcome Joy!! I do in written form on my website www.happyberry.co.uk but no video tutorials as of yet, except a knitting one lol on my other channel.
I find it easier to pinch the foundation chain after making it so it is easier to find after doing the stitch portion. I use the foundation stitches wherever possible as I hate working into the chain! Added bonuses - the chain side is more attractive and it is stretchier than with a regular chain stitch.
You explain this SO well...thank you so much. Can you please tell me the advantage of using this type of stitch? Does it create a better foundation row? Neater? More professional? Many thanks. Sandra
Thank you for your kind feedback Sandra! This technique is great if designing a headband for example as it creates a stretchier softer finished edge, which is less tight than just working with normal chains. It also allows you to measure your project easier after the first row, say if you measured a head circumference, it is more accurate. With chains you can sometimes over crochet and it ends up too long. :)
Does this have any different affect then the normal beginner’s method where first you make a chain of however long you wish, then go back and add the first row to it rather then doing both steps in one go like your showing? Also, is the chain two at the start kind of act like the height? Now I know the 1st chain you made is for the foundation chain, but is all the other chains made prior to creating the foundation chain used as the turning chain for that first row?
I understand how to do this. You really do a great job teaching. My only question is what is this used for? Also, why would you want to use this technique? I'm only asking because I have never actually run across it for any of my projects. Can I use this for anything? Thank you so much for sharing your talents and time. 😷✌🏻💙
It's excellent for edges that require more ease, sometimes basic chains can be rigid and tight, foundation stitches are softer so good for hats and cuffs etc
What kind of yarn is that? It looks interesting. 🤔 How do you get your stitches so perfect? I have tried everything and I just can't get it right. I'm so frustrated I could just cry. 🥺
Question: can a cluster stitch be made while crocheting the foundation chain in this manner? First row of pattern (normally worked in chain) calls for 5 hdc and a cluster of three in 6th chain, then 5 hdc and a cluster of three in next chain, etc.
I'm fairly new to crochet....can you help me understand the benefit of doing this versus a regular foundation chain and then a row of another stitch? Does it save time once you get the hang of it?
I wouldn't say it saves time, it probably works out the same, but the benefits of this technique is the finish, it gives a much stretchier beginning row, which is like the rest of the project, which is useful for hats or any items worn. The normal chaining method though I would say is still quicker. It really is just a preference :)
You're my favourite crochet instructor on RUclips. Very clear and concise. Thanks.

Now that's fantastic! saves all the misery of a chain being too loose or tight and all very fiddly. Thanks so much!
It does indeed! :D

Thank you, I have been struggling with this, but I see now what I did wrong.
Getting back to crochet after 30 years. I've never seen this foundation chain before.
Great instruction video! Please do a tutorial on how to in-the-round with foundation stitches. Thank you!
Hmm, you probably would never need to do them in the round, interesting idea though!

Oh me too he he, I'm hoping to persuade more people to learn it as it creates such a nicer finish! :D
Thank you so much for sharing hugs Shelley 💝
Thank you Shelley!! :)
Really helpful video!!
thank you for this tutorial. I had problems understanding the foundation stitch, but not anymore :)
That's great! :D

I know it’s been a year but I’m pretty sure that would be doable. I see no reason why that couldn’t work.
Yes, I needed this!
Yay! Glad it was useful :)
On the single foundation chain it looks like I have more chains than single stitches?
I'm fairly new to crochet....can you help me understand the benefit of doing this versus a regular foundation chain and then a row of another stitch? Does it save time once you get the hang of it?

You are more than welcome :)
How do you do a chainless foundation for the moss stitch
Question:- when a pattern only gives you the number of chain stitches but not the number of dc/tc/dtc how do you know how many foundation dc/tc/dtc?
when first starting to try and do this can a stitch marker be used to know where to go?
That is a great idea! After working your chain 1, you can use a stitch marker to mark that area :)
tfs
No problem! :D
👍👍👍😘💖جميل
Thank you!!
