Check out this behind the scenes video of the Luxor light! Travel inside our world famous beam of light for a close-up look and special facts from our beam experts.
1:47 Yeah, he should have said what does that mean, "more importantly". It's meaningless just stating it without explanation. So what if UV and IR are "off that chart"? Yeah, that dude needs to think harder (unless they edited out the continuation or something).
@monaco74 I think you are thinking of the Skytracker Four Beam Xenon Searchlights they used for special events. I have never seen the Luxor lights move.
I am a bit surprised they didn't replace these bulbs to use LEDs which uses alot less electricity and longer service life. And probably even brighter than the originals!
@jay611j No, I know it was the Luxor. I say it in person when I stayed next door at the Excalibur and my room faced the Luxor. I remember reading a story about complaints from pilots about the light so they comprimised by making it stationary. True, the beam has been pointed straight up for 15 years now, but when Luxor first opened I swear the thing used to follow a circular path in the sky.
monaco74, I've been to Vegas many times in my life, including the year this hotel was built. I've read a lot of information about Vegas and the Luxor as well. It's one of my favorite places to be, hence my handle, and a place I know very well. I have never known the beam on the top of the Luxor to move. I'm not sure if it was ever discussed, but every photo and every time I've ever actually seen it, the beam was always straight up.
I'm fairly sure, not being a doctor, that if you stared at the beam you would permanently go blind. Or should I say as long as your eyes would be eyes.
@@electrictroy2010 He's talking about the metal structure and catwalk above the lights. The fact it is blindingly bright inside tells you how much light is not making it outside.
If this runs 24/7 365 day a year and their electricity rate is $0.15 per kwh; then this would cost them $358722 a year just for electricity not counting the replacing of the lamp and man hours. Nearly a thousand dollar a day. Crazy. Meanwhile the light of the world goes unnoticed by most. Sad.
@Daniel G. re: "The light is so pointless but very cool. Waste of energy at the end of the day." We do because we can. These 'beams' could be our salvation if spotted by extraterrestrials.
True.....that light half makes casino! They got tired of payin for it n who can blame tbem..Ppl decided the light stays though.....👍👍Is funny, biggest waste o power but light stays, albiet dimmed.....
I was at the Hacienda Hotel next door for a family reunion for a week in June, 1994 and I know that wasn't happening. Plus, if you look closely in this video, it doesn't seem like that would have ever been possible based on the setup.
Minecraft beacon block lol
lol
Lol
Las Vegas residents actually use it as a point of reference when navigating around. Their "North Star."
not true???..
Noooo we do not. Most of the time you cannot see the light, because it’s blocked by other buildings. So we use our phone maps, or memory
The UV and IR are off the chart and you would have more than retina burns.
How about, blistering 3rd degree burns ...
So it's basically a death ray.
@@twistedyogert More like skin cancer ray. That whole area becomes a skin cancer zone when that light is turned on.

Luxor sure looks cool without all the in-your-face ad billboards they now have plastered on the side of the pyramid.
could grow some mad chronic...um, i mean tomato's up there. EPIC!!!

Jay yeah the lights don’t move anymore for some reason. Sad. Looked cool when it moves.

MAKING OF LUXOR DOC from its first year says the light points straight up. So that means it never moved
.
After many complaints from aircraft they did dim it down from what it used to be.
If they want to reduce energy cost why don’t they change to LED lamps?
Pilots actually enjoy it. The light doesn't move, and pilots are warned when it powers on by strobe lights.
Surprised that thing dont attract ufos!!😆
How to ruin a pilot's day 101

What's the point of the big light? To disrupt aircraft and waste electricity?
Because it's cool.
Attracts all the bugs in Vegas.
1991 they didn’t care if electricity was wasted. In 2008 they turned the light to half power.
Waste electricity,yes....😆Otherwise,play w ufos!!!😆😆

What's the things flying around the beams of light at night?
Insects mostly. Bats also.
Birds,ufos...😆
@tom357 Technically, you're not wrong.
Wow
⭐Luxor⭐
thats my teacher lol =)
luxor is sooo large

Aliens want to know your location
The lights should have been placed in circle ⭕️ formation. I’d look into more alternative lights LeD intense cooler cheaper to operate
They chabge the light bulbs every 83 days
Gta san Andreas
That structure probably blocks half the lumens! WTF
Not really. It’s designed to transmit the light. Plus they need some kind of protection for the lamps

Netherite beacon
Those people look exactly how I would imagine a guest staying at the luxor lol

Amen Re Quiem, amen
Divide your estimate by 3, because the light only operates 8 hours per day
What's sad about it?
Crеtin. It's for Las Vegas (and around) to enjoy.

Yeah, the thing is so bright that aircraft cannot fly over it at night.
Helicopters fly over it all the time.
Am I the only one who remembers when the light beam used to rotate around in circles? I think that was around 1994.
