  • The cheapest way to start a podcast can look differently to everyone. To some, it might look like using your phone with an app like Anchor. To others, maybe it's just a USB microphone with a Zoom account. To others, it means spending a little extra money that doesn't go beyond $500.
    At the end of the day, when it comes to starting your podcast, you can start out by testing the waters, but you're going to end up having to pay for either equipment or services if you want to do the really cool things with your podcast.
    Just remember that you can start at your own pace and you don't have to spend a lot of money to get started, but my channel is intended to help those who want to get serious with podcasting and make significant strides to turn their podcast into something more than just a hobby.
    The following links are affiliate links to the equipment that I use here at my house. This is about as affordable as it gets when it comes to having decent equipment that doesn't go beyond $500.
    Any purchase of products through these links does provide me a commission for promoting the product.

      I'm glad this helps you out! I really made this video because I continue to get asked this question and the honest answer is that you can do it on the cheap, but it's not going to help you grow the podcast. But if not growing or going beyond what you want to do is what your goal is, then I have no problem with how anyone does it, but they will want to grow eventually. Thank you for watching this! 🤓

    Lipsyn has been very good so far, They have added new destinations, and a podcast page, which is darn good to start if you need to save on a website page, and just do your social media pages to get a running start. Stats are great even in The 'cheaper ' plans, and comments interaction is there as well. Ps Shan Nan is correct, I did not start this RUclips channel! I got lucky and got picked up by this one.

    • @ShannonHernandez

      You're welcome. I don't have a legal disclaimer page. I would think it all depends on your niche. I know for lawyers they need to have a legal disclaimer page because they have to be careful as to what type of advice they are giving. The same could be said of educators too. So, it depends on your niche. What do you need a legal disclaimer for?

If people consume content are they consumers of the idea or of the quality production. It's not a matter of good or bad, I'm just trying to understand what value is being transferred while consuming content on these sorts of platforms.

    Great vid. Thank you. My issue is my podcast will be heavy remote guest driven. I'm not clear on what minimal technical requirements my guests will need in order to participate easily. Most of my guests will be low tech. If the world was mine I would love to be able to just call them from Skype to a regular phone, they slap on some ear buds and we go. I realize that may not be the best. Do you have a minimal low tech check list I can give potential guest? It's a tough balance between securing the guests and not wearing out my welcome. Thanks in advance.

    • @ShannonHernandez
      @ShannonHernandez  5 лет назад

      There is definitely a solution depending on which OS you have. I recently discovered Ecamm for Mac and I was able to test some phone calls yesterday on a RUclips live. All you would basically need is a Skype phone number and that gives you the ability to patch the call into a video if need be. There's more to this but that's the basics of it. Your guest would only need their phone. You can see the example here at the 43 minute mark: ruclips.net/video/c6clQUwAZdE/видео.html
      The PC solution will require you to pick up equipment. But it serves as an equal solution, except you have to get a mixing board and the normal equipment. All your guest would need is their phone and you would need a Skype number. I have a video here that solves the Skype solution: ruclips.net/video/JWWXhei44Oo/видео.html

    Quick question, so I'm starting a podcast I'm confused as to how to record.. do I use this zoom h6 thing? Use a DAW? Both??? Also I need a mixer, would you recommend using a Rodecaster Pro and recording everything on there? I'm going for the least post production work. Should I do the Rodecaster to the SD card? Or what would you recommend

    • @ShannonHernandez
      @ShannonHernandez  4 года назад

      You can use the Zoom recorder and then dump the audio into a DAW. That's how most people do it. But you can also record and edit in a DAW too. If you can afford the Rodecaster, then I say do it. But if you're more on a budget, I'd say go with this setup: ruclips.net/video/4qfIVMBGmmI/видео.html

    For the podcast that I do with my buddy, we have three Marantz MPM-1000 mics which are currently $50 (the third one is if we have guest with us), we record on a Zoom H6 that is around $399 (this saves the 2 or 3 tracks separately), then we edit in GarageBand which is free. We are looking to upgrade soon though.

    • @ShannonHernandez
      @ShannonHernandez  5 лет назад

      What is the size of your SD card?

    • @iplaywithmyself211
      @iplaywithmyself211 5 лет назад +1

      It is a 32GB card. It records in .wav. Just the two of us can record for about 2 hours and the two separate tracks leave plenty of space. We could record with a third voice and use up less than half of it.@@ShannonHernandez

    • @ShannonHernandez
      @ShannonHernandez  5 лет назад +1

      I believe there is an ability to record into that player combining the two separate tracks into one. It's how I record all of my interviews. Because it only records in .wav, I try to optimize the recording all into one wav file. But it also depends on the bit rate too. As long as it's not recording at 320, you can save some serious space.

    Shannon, thank you so much for making video that are real informative. I watch your videos everyday now. I have a question. In your opinion, what is the most annoying thing that poscasters do?

    • @ShannonHernandez
      @ShannonHernandez  5 лет назад

      Hi Danina, this is an interesting question because it's not necessarily "annoying" things rather, things that podcasters can improve upon. Ultimately, this is a personal preference but I can give you my take as a professional radio broadcaster:
      1) Unless you create a storytelling podcast, podcasters script way too much. Scripting requires a podcaster to read. And when a podcaster reads, they sound stuffy and "perfect". There's something to be said about small imperfections and natural speech.
      2) Podcasters who act bigger than what they are. Sometimes I'll pop on a podcast and the podcaster tries to be a Howard Stern or over excited. I ask myself, "is this really how they act in person?" Sometimes it really is how someone acts, but most of the time no one is THAT excited. My biggest advice to podcasters is to just be themselves. They should sound interested and somewhat excited, but they don't have to act like there is a party always going on--unless that's the theme of the podcast.
      3) Podcasters have no concept of clean segways. In other words, there is zero flow in the podcast from segment to segment. This goes for making transitions from topic to topic or music bed to music bed. Everything is abrupt. For instance, I've heard many podcasts that have music running under their voice while the podcaster makes their point. After the podcaster makes their point, they'll let the music bed run out--which is like 5 to 10 more seconds. It sounds awkward and has zero flow or transition. Podcasts could be more listenable if they understood and knew the importance of segways.
      Those are the top 3 I can think. These are my opinion and aren't necessarily aligned with many, but I'm almost certain that if podcasters employed and practiced these skills, they would improve the quality of their program significantly.

  • @explorecreateshare9714
    @explorecreateshare9714 6 лет назад

    If it's your time starting a podcast, I'd recommend using some really cheap equipment, like your own cell phone or maybe an ART2100 7 Samson Q2u. If your expectections are fulfilled and you decide to keep growng your project, you could consider more and better equipment, like an audio interface and even a dedicated room with sound treatment. BTW, any chance that you can mane a couple of videos on mic technique and breathing technique? When I record I run out of breath and then, when I inhale, it sounds as if I had been about to suffocate, hehe..

    • @ShannonHernandez
      @ShannonHernandez  6 лет назад +2

      I understand that there are some podcasters that are out there that won't have the funds and I realize that it may be something they are exploring, but I personally don't like telling people to get the cheapest because they always want to upgrade into something more from the start. Although I don't care if they get cheap stuff, but getting cheap equipment, hosting, etc is really more of a disservice down the line. They have to remember that hardware is a one-time purchase and hosting is a recurring purchase. I'm not saying this to you specifically, but mainly for the comments so that people can see where I'm coming from.

      Hi Dale, thanks for watching the video. Your phone mic should be pretty decent. Most Android and iPhones have great mics. As for doing interviews you would just need to do those in person. What do you think of using SoundCloud as a podcast host?

    • @ShannonHernandez
      @ShannonHernandez  5 лет назад +1

      I personally don't like using them. I decided that I would use them for a podcast after I had used Blubrry for another podcast I did. Soundcloud is cool in theory, but it lacks a lot when it comes to creating a podcast. I don't believe they have a scheduling function on their platform and that was a big time deal breaker for me since I want to always be ahead of the game when it comes to developing a podcast. Their statistics aren't that great and they still haven't figured out how to make a profit as a company. I could be wrong, but I believe they are still using investor money, so there is always a risk of them shutting down. Two years ago when I signed on with them, I had dropped a bunch of podcast episodes then there was all this talk that they were days from being shut down. I just can't live like that. This is why I stick with Libsyn or Blubrry.

    • @frankierodriguez4785
      @frankierodriguez4785 5 лет назад +1

      Yeah I could totally see why that would draw some concern. I just started recording episodes for my podcast and I have a SoundCloud set up so when I have a few episodes under my belt I could upload a few. I also have a free Buzzsprout account however it is a little limited with how much you can upload for free. I know SoundCloud has an unlimited pro account for $15-$16 a month which if all goes well would be awesome cause I could upload tons of content. I will explore my options before I pick a dedicated host for my podcasts. I really appreciate your feedback and quick response!

    • @ShannonHernandez
      @ShannonHernandez  5 лет назад +1

      At the end of the day, if you really want to optimize everything that podcasting has to offer, I would go with Libsyn or Blubrry. Those two are ALWAYS set up to keep the podcaster optimized inside of iTunes. They always have their platforms set up for the updates and proper tagging. Soundcloud is very limited with this. I was willing to pay an extra $5 for a plan ($20/mo) on Libsyn if it gave me more than what Soundcloud was giving me. Soundcloud is cool in theory, but it just isn't something that I would ever recommend a podcaster spend their money using. It's too frustrating to migrate from Soundcloud to a new service.

    3:03 The story I'm telling myself is the people that find my podcast valuable, will vote accordingly. I could be wrong but if I spend my time making it sound crazy perfect, I will miss out on content that was only available at a certain point in time. Studio sound is great dont get me wrong but how do I clean up audio recorded outside walking around with a 20 dollar lapel mic?
    It better be one good podcast if it's going to get any votes.

While I appreciate your comments on the channel, I just feel like you are not in alignment with the style of podcasting that I produce. I've had clients who have used lapel mics for their podcast and it has a different feel. When I recommend they upgrade their equipment AND mindset, they always tell me it was the best thing I could have ever recommended to them.
      People who come to this channel want to make quality podcast content all around. They are not interested in creating podcast content that delivers half of the time--whether it's content or production. Even if they are taking pieces of what I have to say and using it, they are also working toward implementing more.

      Yea literally like from one hr to the next. It has been a crazy long night.
      I like that you mentioned mind set because I think that's the value you bring to their content, and they in turn appreciate it. Best form of payment there is..until we start using something like the Internet of Value. Like I said, you know your shit on equipment and technical's. When it's broadcast quality I want to make and hear....best believe I know who I'm coming back to.

    11:30 I hear what you're saying but I'll take the risk of passing my 20$ lapel mic around to anyone that wants to add value to my story.

      If that's what you're comfortable doing, then that's great. Value is important for people. But sound quality is sometimes important to people who want quality. You don't have to take my word for it at all. Do what you want to do because ultimately it has to work for you.

      Yes, and thank you for this learning experience. Having listened to my self with and with out the external mic.....the one on my phone sounds better. Go figure.

      If you don't like the video or other videos that I post, you're free to not comment or move into the next thing. Otherwise, your comment is just a trolling comment.
