    Dynamic mics (Shure SM7B, Shure SM57 or 58) are great for podcasts as well. In fact if your environment is roomy or not as acoustically treated, they’re probably better as they’re more forgiving and reject a bit of the room/echo sound. It won’t wipe it out, but it helps focus on the voice rather than the room.

    *Making Your Podcast Sound Professional*
    Making a podcast "sound" professional isn't something that is just about the audio quality of your podcast. Even though audio quality is certainly important, there are certain nuances that go into the delivery of your podcast.
    Sure, you can use audio editing software and edit until you're blue in the face, but this all comes down to how your listener views your performance and appreciates the end product.
    I certainly understand that what I talk about in this video isn't anything that you can plug in and apply to your mixing board or website (some of it is). What you're really "plugging into" is yourself.

    I believe that my 2016 Macbook Pro is creating some audio noise that's going into my Skype recordings. I've tried connecting via iMic and Xenyx302 but no difference. There are some RUclips videos that involve fixing code within the Mac, but that's beyond me. I'd rather pay for a solution. Any ideas?

    • @ShannonHernandez
      @ShannonHernandez  6 лет назад

      aaaaaah, yeah I've worked on that mixer before and it's just a cheap one. I had the 802 and after about a year, it started to give me the same buzz.
      Before recommend purchasing anything, I'll have to ask whether you have checked the XLR cables to make sure you don't have a faulty cable. Do you have an extra one to make sure it's not the cable?
      Likely it isn't the XLR and it's the board itself, but I just want to make sure.
      Also, check that the mixing board isn't plugged into the same circuit in the wall or on the same power strip too. You may have to run an extension from another part of the room to the board to see if that fixes the sound.
      If it isn't the mic, then it's the board because it's exactly what happened to me when I was using it every week.
      I know that you have the 302, but if you're going to jump into a new board, I would recommend getting into the one of the two that is recommended on my website. If you're not looking for all of that power in the MG10XU, you can go with the baby brother mixer. You can find it here: www.theshanman.com/pages/podcast-equipment
      Let me know how else I can help out if you can't get that sound to go away.

    Hey Shannon,
    Thanks for your videos..We have a difficulty in the flow of the speech being Indians while we have great technical content to be podcasted to the world. Though English is popular in India, I strongly feel flow should be fast enough to create energy and interest in the whole pod-casting experience. I see big difference between the native English speakers and Non-natives in the pod-casting arena.
    Sometimes I feel that I have to write the whole speech in order to avoid the missing of flow. But I don't like to do that as I am really good speaker outside the pod-casting environment.
    How to overcome this? Will this be a big problem for successful pod-casting? Please give some tips for Non-native English speakers.

    Thanks Shannon, but what I would say is that the kind of mic you should use will depend upon the studio and setup. Using a condenser mic with a group of 2 or 3 people in a studio can lead to poor sound quality as all mics will be picking up from the others. Directional dynamic mics (such as Shure 58) are perfect for a group discussion and they don't need phantom power. I use my Rode condenser when working solo, as I prefer the intimacy it creates. But there is a cost - using a condenser means you need a good studio and a quiet environment to record.

    • @ShannonHernandez
      @ShannonHernandez  5 лет назад +1

      Hi Peter. I have mentioned your sentiment in later videos that talk about the mics and how they pick up other sounds. There's no real way of drowning out other sounds unless the mics are separated from each other at a decent distance. I've played with multiple configurations and have come to the conclusion that a setup will determine how much a mic picks up. Thank you for the comment!

    • @ShannonHernandez
      @ShannonHernandez  6 лет назад

      Hi Mo! I don't know why I didn't get the notification that you had commented. I feel terrible! With regards to your question. I'm always a fan of reiterating points in the beginning and in the end. I look at a podcast like writing a paper for school.
      You start with an intro, body and conclusion. In your conclusion, you typically back up what you had stated in your introduction or thesis statement. So I am all about reiterating this!
      I hope this helps. --Shannon

    I just found this video and I’m super surprised at your Blue Yetti sounding so well. I have one, and it picks up any noise. I have two pop filters on it to try and block some of the noise. I have the gain set all the way down, but there’s a huge echo in any room and like stated before, everything is heard (AC, dogs, TV in another room, talking in another room, planes flying outside, etc.)

      @reylunajr 4 года назад

      Dont know what Shannon's take on this... I'm still learning myself. But from my experience, condensers by far produce a better quality sound, but because they're powered mice, they're super sensitive. You cant really use it in an untreated room. So throw up some acoustic foam tiles or moving blankets on the wall. That should help with the echo.
      If possible use an inner room of your house because noise from outside can and will get into your recording. If its completely unavoidable, then you may have to use a dynamic mic. But as Shannon mentioned, its probably not gonna sound as nice and crisp but it will eliminate the noise for sure.

    • @ShannonHernandez
      @ShannonHernandez  5 лет назад

      Hi Fatemeh. It shouldn't be an issue.
      It shouldn't be a terrible issue if it records into one track. I suppose it all depends on which program you're recording it into. What are you using to record?
      All of my podcasts record as one track. That's all you really need, really. When it comes to the equal quality, it will depend on the types of microphones. If you're using two different USB mics, there may be a definite difference in quality. I'd have to hear what it sounds like before I could make that assertion.
      If you're recording into a computer, I would recommend watching this video I've created here: ruclips.net/video/4QXyvPLCz58/видео.html

    • @ShannonHernandez
      @ShannonHernandez  5 лет назад

      There might be a bit of a difference in the sound quality because each mic has a different capsule for recording different sounds. But if both are for talking, you should be OK. There might be a slight difference, but you won't know unless you test it and put it into a program like Audacity or Audition. If you're using something like Voicemeeter, I think that's for mixing the sound live as you're doing the recording. I'm personally not too worried about live mixing because I do all of my equalization and mixing in Audition.
      It will all depend on your process and how you want it to sound. You can have a sweet live mix and have it ready to send to your hosting service or you can record without equalization and fix that in post-production. It will just depend on the process that makes the most sense to you. :)

    • @ShannonHernandez
      @ShannonHernandez  7 лет назад +1

      You're welcome.
      As for making your iphone recording sound more professional, there has to be a little bit of post-production when you record from an iPhone. Even at that, it's still not perfect. If you listen to my podcast, I'd say 70% of the interviews are done on iPhone.
      If you know how to edit in Adobe Audition, then, it makes the recording sound better.
      You have to also know where to place the mic and make sure you're putting the mic in range of your subject.

      Sure thing:
      1. I record my video with my iPhone or webcam.

      6. I mute the audio on video track and make sure the audio from the processed track is now running.
      7. I make edits, then export.

      Where do you want to see your podcast in a year?

    Is a blue snowball a good microphone cause I have one

    • @ShannonHernandez
      @ShannonHernandez  8 лет назад +1

      +Hungry Potato It's a good one, but it doesn't allow the podcaster to monitor themselves (or any potential skype/hangouts guest). It's best to use the Blue Yeti because you eliminate feedback into the microphone.

  • @beenz07

    I have a standard blue yeti but it doesn't have that sound. Will a mixer fix that? Currently it goes right into my computer.

    • @ShannonHernandez
      @ShannonHernandez  7 лет назад

      I have that same one and the Blue Yeti Pro. The one you have comes in silver, but some come in black and are USB ONLY. That's the one, right? Unfortunately the USB version won't work since you need the Blue Yeti Pro that has an input for an XLR cable. You don't need the BYP though. You can get just about any mic. Here's a list of possible options you can get: www.theshanman.com/pages/podcast-equipment

    What about using Dynamic Microphone 🎤 vs Condenser Microphone

    Why do you recommend condenser vs. dynamic mic?

    • @ShannonHernandez
      @ShannonHernandez  9 лет назад +2

      Cristina Favreau Condenser microphones are used for primarily in radio or voiceover studios. You tend to get more volume without vehemently over-speaking into the microphone.
      Dynamic microphones need a power source (so do condensers) and users need to sometimes crank the volume just to get any sound out of the mic by. It's also going to depend on your phantom power setup too. Condensers definitely sound great, but it doesn't mean that I haven't heard some podcasts that have a great sound out of the Dynamic mic.
      If I were in a live situation and needed extra mics, I would probably use Dynamic microphones. "Live" meaning that I would be recording at a restaurant, outside, or whatever. Plus they're easier to pack around.
      There are definite pros and cons, but if you're going to be recording in a bedroom, basement or garage, you can use something like the Blue Yeti if your recordings are all going to be done on Google Hangouts or Skype. You shouldn't be using Dynamic mics at that point because you'll need to purchase extra hardware. That can be a pain in the butt.
      I use the Blue Yeti for recording commercials, podcast interviews, etc. It's a versatile microphone and I have used it to record countless radio commercials.
      I hope that answers your question. :) Hit me up if you have other questions. :)

      ***** Awesome. Thanks for the very thorough explanation. I got a USB dynamic mic for podcasting, since I don't have a very soundproof environment. I'm curious to hear how my voice sounds with different mics!

    Shannon, if it is so important to provide a great sounding podcast, WHAT ARE WE ASKING THE INTERVIEWED PERSON USE ON THEIR END AS A MICROPHONE IF YOU ARE INTERVIEWING VIA SKYPE????? During the pre-interview...how can we optimize THEIR side of the audio if they’re halfway around the world??? How do we control for that?

    • @ShannonHernandez
      @ShannonHernandez  5 лет назад +1

      You can't really control what their mic does. This is why I recommend podcasters utilize a setup for Skype phone calls, not Skype calls. Calls should be normalized already and if you run those calls through a mixing board, you can adjust the Highs, Mids & Lows on the mixing board. If you haven't watched my Basic Podcast Setup, this will help you achieve a cleaner call.
      I've always had a problem with Skype calls because most people do them off their webcam mic and it's annoying to me.

      @ShannonHernandez  4 года назад

      I would recommend checking out this entire playlist that I've created here: ruclips.net/p/PLq0-2tkvKoErkF6g4RzpWU2jcgFF0ELwC
      It should answer your basic questions.
      With regards to an "easy-to-use" editing program, they are all going to need some level of skill in order to use them. The "easiest" to use is going to be the program that works best for you.
      The one that works best for me is Adobe Audition because I know all of the shortcuts needed to edit a podcast is nearly 15-20 minutes.
      If you need a guide to the equipment I recommend, you can grab it here: shanman.tips/quickstart.
      I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any questions.

    I have a dumb question. Should I script my solo podcast?

    • @ShannonHernandez
      @ShannonHernandez  5 лет назад +3

      That's certainly not a dumb question at all. It's a perfectly valid question for someone who is new to podcasting. IMO, if you script a solo podcast, you're basically reading an e-book in my eyes. To me, why would you script something that you could basically sell? So I recommend to all of my clients that they just bullet point what they want to talk about and become more natural in how they speak. I ask all of my clients to act like they're having a conversation with a friend and speak on the things they know the most about. Does that help?

      @@ShannonHernandez Yes thank you

      @@ShannonHernandez Also here is another question. Since I do solo podcast how do I make my podcast longer. If you see my videos they are short and I don't like having very short podcast so what is a way to stretch the time on my podcast without running out of things to say?

    • @ShannonHernandez
      @ShannonHernandez  5 лет назад

      @@sticklait Yep! You'll have to plan out what you want to say. Make sure that you prepare you program to a specific length. 30-40 minutes is a good length, but you'll have to prepare what you want to say, provide stories and examples that are meaningful for the podcast listener. You'll really be able to extend time that way, but don't do it for the sake of filling time. Also, I would be careful about posting your audio podcast on RUclips. RUclips doesn't really give you preference if you have audio only on their platform. In some cases they won't even show your video to anyone if it's audio only.

    RE20 is okay tho right?

    • @ShannonHernandez
      @ShannonHernandez  7 лет назад +1

      RE20 will work just fine. You can pick just about any microphone you want, but you need to make sure that you have solid equalization on the output. Then you can go into something like Adobe Audition and do some post-processing.

    • @snappytwig2446
      @snappytwig2446 7 лет назад +1

      Thanks! I fret for hours thinking about how to make my podcast sound better. I started with the levelator but found that made things sound ok but messed up my music tracks. So I dropped that and now I find myself compressing the final track and that messed up music. Now I'm planning to treat the spoken tracks separately for level and compression before mixing with largely unmolested music and give myself enough ceiling.

    Overconfirming when recording remotely by audio only is often the only way to let the interviewee know you’re there. When you can’t see each other’s faces, it can be hard for the interviewee to know you’re still there... especially given the risk that skype can drop out ...
