    Have you ever tried making a Kelvin Water Dropper ? Takes a bit of room but is interesting how it creates a spark from drops of water. Would like to try making the set up someday.

    You forgot one other magical power, when a wimshurst machine rotates it's sectors, it's applying mechanical force tangential to the direction of the electric force. As a result, wimshurst machines only have to fight a small component vector of the electric force in order to complete sector re-alignments. This allows them to have an amplified electric potential energy output relative to their kinetic energy input specifically in regards to the portion of energy used to fight the electric force.
    This is because sector re-alignments are done against component vectors but the charges are propelled by the full force vector of the electric force.

    Great video. Have been trying to think of ways to use it that I have yet to see online. The spinning thing on a wire I have done with a 9000 volt neon transformer but is tricky. Seems to be under powered really. But aluminum foil will work.

    • @PlasmaChannel
      @PlasmaChannel  6 лет назад

      In my experience, DC high voltage works best for ionic thrust. Comes down to repelling the atmosphere, by charging it to a simillar charge. If there is AC present, you cant have full repulsion.

    I bought such a machine. The paper experiment works nicely. I wonder why I cannot get any hair standing up. I tried with several persons and setups. A Van der Graaf generator does the trick, but this Wimshurst machine does not. What's the reason?

    • @analog_guy
      @analog_guy 2 года назад +1

      The maximum voltage of this machine is not high enough to produce a strong hair-raising effect, but there will nevertheless be some effect. An easy way to observe the effect is to touch one electrode while bringing the back of your other hand near the other electrode (but not so near as to produce a spark!). You may be able feel the hairs stand up a little and you may be able to observe the hairs rise if you look closely. It may help to place an empty soft drink aluminum can over and in contact with the non-grounded electrode to form a larger electrode area of less curvature so you can approach it more closely without causing a spark.
      To raise the hair on your head, two things are prerequisites: One of the electrodes (the rods with the discharge balls on the ends) must be electrically connected to ground such as via a wire from the electrode to a cold-water pipe. The person must touch the other rod while being well-insulated from the surrounding environment. For instance, the person can stand on a clean plastic step stool or on a clean plastic sheet that is at least several millimeters thick. Once the machine is turned on, the person may observe a slight tingling effect as the fine hairs on the backs of the hands and on the arms stand up a little. The effect may be observable if you look closely at the hairs. The person may be able to get the head-hairs to stand out a little by shaking his or her head vigorously.
      Here's an explanation of the strength of the force: The electrostatic force is proportional to the charge times the field strength. For a given physical arrangement (a given separation of objects at differing voltages), the field strength is proportional to the voltage difference and the stored charge on the surfaces is also proportional to the voltage difference, so the electrostatic force is typically proportional to the square of the voltage difference. Thus, the force produced in a given situation using 30,000 volts is only about 9% of that produced by a 100,000-volt difference ((30,000/100,000)^2), and is about 2.3% of that produced by a 200,000-volt difference. Van de Graaf generators with top electrodes of about 3 inches in diameter can produce voltages exceeding 100,000 volts which will produce some hair raising, and the generators with even larger top electrodes can go much higher in voltage, producing the impressive hair-raising results you can see in other videos.
