I like this a lot. The especially interesting part to me is that this system only achieves quasi stability because it *isn't* in a vacuum, whereas so much physics taught in the classroom assumes a vacuum to the point of borderline ignorance. Without the air to act as an ion channel needed to achieve negative feedback, it seems like this system would have exactly one unstable equilibrium point somewhere near the midpoint between the plates and getting it to sit there would be like balancing a pencil on its sharpened tip. I wonder if gluing some very small neutral mass (like individual grains of rice or something) would make the smaller foil even easier to control, since there will be a little more mechanical inertia in the system while the electrical side is relatively unchanged.

Fantastic application of using the human body as part of a circuit. I wonder if there would be any improvement if the foil was shaped like the star trek logo, though to have it snad up initially may need to be a tripod There's also a vid wth a guy levitating polystyrene balls and paper
Of course ! That's how it works isn't it ? Safe isolation ? Not a problem with the old one hand In the pocket trick 😅 Aaahh sarcasm. . . . Yeah nah yeah the internet is a fun place to learn fun innocence things
But the one hand rule doesnt make any sense when you are standing on the aluminum foil like in this video. The current will flow from your one hand across your chest to your feet. The one hand rule only make sense when your feet are isolated.
Ok I had 2 more experiences since I posted this 1. In the shower during a storm , I touched the handle and I felt a muscle in my left hand contract or expand , then I felt the lower parts of my muscles on my legs contract or expand 2. A slight shock from a motor I hacked open, there were a lot of arcs forming at the bottom of it, the motor is from a bullet blender and it was connected to 240V AC
Correct me if I m wrong Flow of Electrons is from negative to positive...As u connect the Aluminium foil to positive ...the cations or the positive ions ..spread to whole Al plate..while u connect the negative to ur palm ...which then anions float to your hand While the Voltage is equal to Work done in bringing a unit charge unit from one point to another point...so as the cations spread throughout the Al sheet...the Volatge makes more effort...and helps *Transferring electrons from ur hard to The Al sheet* As according to Charge by conduction method...The small Al sheet placed on large Al sheet..picks up the exact positive charge and by Unlike charge attraction law ... The Al sheet gets closer to ur hand and levitates..and as the foil moves up...Charge by induction method starts making the foil lower part Negative and foil upper part positive..but as soon as the Distance between them increases the Electro-static force decrease..and then the foil drops again...then the cycle repeats ...if during levitation the The foil comes on steady state ...then it's ions are adjusted by the fields....the hand as negative ...pushes electrons downwards and attracts the positive ones ..as u said from 4:30 (I guess) And by the Formula Voltage = Di electric constant multiply by Charge ...whole divided by Distance..so it levitates more quickly as the distance between ur hand and small Al sheet is reduced as Voltage keeps on increasing and increasing...making transferring of charge more quick😊😊 By the way ..great video...love from India 🇮🇳🇮🇳
I did this in 2005 I used a FBT from an old CRT monitor, I fashioned 3 hemispheres from alu foil suspended them above a round plastic sheet I covered in aluminium tape and grounded it to the earth, the three hemispheres were connected to the FBT and my sprites as I called them were fashioned from Alu foil again by wrapping them around a no10 drill bit and twisted off to a point at one end, they spin loads faster than flat pieces of foil, and in the dark as they spin and jump up and down you can see some small discharge, which adds to the sprite/fairy effect :) , the local kids thought it was amazing. GREAT VIDEO :) took me back 15 years
5:18 what if you charge your body up to 70.000 voltz Answer : you die and end up looking like darth Vader whit no cool suit but you'll still have the breathing noise
Funny thing is you already get regularly charged thousands of volts. That doorknob shock after wearing plastic slippers? Those slippers charged you couple of thousand volts. Enough to make an arc.
"Including the human body" Sure hope someone doesn't try this with their body as the levitating object. You won't just be a corpse, you'll be a levitating corpse!
Just one thing about safety: It is wrong to say that "if you keep one hand in your pocket electricity wouldn't flow in your chest". Actually, the current flowing in your heart is double than the right hand-left hand case! You can learn more by searching electrical safety and pathway on Google (i don't know how that factor is called in english, sorry)
Come on guys , it’s just a scientific video , he can’t learn safety rules in 10 second to people, he just show how it can be , any one interested to learn can search in google , just let the people to enjoy that video
@@mohsenaghdam3136 but i've enjoyed that! It was awesome to see the piece of aluminum foil following his finger! If i "rectify" a concept that some people can misunderstand it doesn't mean i didn't like the video :)
Hey, fair enough! I'll be honest, i've tested the one hand rule while doing this, and shocking myself. Honestly, across the chest is terrible. Absolutely terrifying. When I am shocked standing on the foil....no biggie. The arm just twitches is all. I dont know the numbers, I just know I tested it, and the one hand rule still protects you somewhat.
@@PlasmaChannel I can confirm that it hurts more if you take it from both hands (honestly, me and electroboom have similar experience with shocks xD). But more pain doesn't mean necessarily more current through your heart, which is the thing to care about. The one hand rule anyway has his pros, when i play with arcs i also use only the right hand, but for preventing to close a circuit with my body and because you are more focused on what you're doing with that hand (also because the right hand is a bit farther from the heart than the left). Have you tried doing the experiment standing on the plastic stool with the aluminum wrapped on your elbow? Sholdn't it work anyway? If yes, is the safest case, because current should flow only in your forearm
I came here from Mehdi's channel.. I love it! I guess I will have to peruse your channel a bit and take in the sites here.. I may just sub up this looks like another cool place to hang out.. And believe me when you 68 you need all the cool places you can get! carry on!
This might be the best video on your channel after Fire Bending. At 5:48, you showed your right hand inside the pocket. But if someone does that, it will cause electricity to flow through left hand or left side of body. I was relieved to see you using right hand for the experiment. That was really a cool and dangerous experiment to try.
Hey Tarun! Glad you enjoyed it so much. Yeah, the one hand rule, regardless of hand, will still protect your heart as opposed to a shocking going across both arms / chest. But, right hand is definitely better. Cool stuff right?
Jay, you continue to inspire, awe and inform! One of your coolest videos to date, and that's saying slot given how many great ones you've made! I have two questions. 1. If not too much trouble can you do a short video explaining/shoimg how you improved the power supply for the voltage multiplier? Or make a Patreons post with pictures and a bit of text describing, if that is easier. 2. When you stand on the plate, are you wearing shoes or are you barefoot/wearing socks? (Normally I'd swear you had to be barefoot, but high voltage can do some funny things with things that are normally insulating, like soles of shoes, lol
Hey Justin! That is really nice of you to say. I put a lot of work into this video, and knowing that you enjoyed it is great. as for 1) really great recommendation. I'm more than happy to do that for my patreons 2) I am barefoot when standing on the foil. Using socks results in my feet not being in complete contact with the foil, so sparks jump between the cotton and burn me. Full contact is a must!
@@PlasmaChannel there's also a bit of Michael in there from Vsauce in there too. ofcorse that isn't to say your content isn't original or good because it certainly is has someone lower pointed out I didn't realise that my comments sounded negative... I was excited when I posted this comment, ive found a new creator✌😁👍
At 3:00 or so, where the foil bounces around --- I'm quite sure we could capitalize on this effect/factor .. Could a containment perimeter be built in ring around the outside, to keep the foil on the bottom plate, and the power (voltage/current/frequency) and the weight/mass of the foil be controlled such that we witness some of the higher harmonics of this discovery?
This was one of the coolest science videos I've ever seen!! I also especially enjoyed your cold plasma video and thought it was inspiring! It would be nice if I could get half as many views someday for my ion thrusters with onboard power!
What was the modified power supply for the ladder? Looks like a battery and a circuit from what? A mini flyback xfrmr and SCR? where would one of those be found?
Great experiment. Please note that the "one hand rule (you put your right hand in your pocket)," 5:50 is actually the "Left Hand Rule" (which you properly followed during the actual experiment. Emphasis should be that you don't want current flowing "through your heart". If you're standing on the HV source touching with your right hand, the heart is not involved in the path.
Obviously, im missing something, but how does it remain quasi stable if when it gets too close to the top, the electrons are discharged out of the bottom? Wouldn't that make it more positively charged, and thus even more strongly attracted to the negatively charged top plate?
What if you charge the top plate with positive 70 kilovolts and bottom plate with negative 70 kilovolts instead of zero volts? Will the foil now float stable in the middle of both plates?
Nice demonstration Jay. Not sure that a hand to foot current path is much of an improvement over a hand to hand path though. If I was going to do this, I would stand on an insulated platform and connect the HV to the wrist or elbow of my "working" arm, probably through a current limiting resistor.
@@PlasmaChannel yes! Did you receive my last email? :D my next project is a small dual resonant solid State tesla coil. Have you ever built a sstc or a drsstc? I Think you will love it ;)
Jay, Could you answer a question of which I have been receiving conflicting unclear details.... Regarding charge in the atmosphere.... Where can I get details of the charge status of the Earth, Ionosphere etc.? Are they net positive or net negative? I'm assuming ground is net negative but is the Ionosphere therefore net positive? Arcing happens within clouds, so why is that if the cloud layer is mostly net positive??? confusing....
I've found NASA is a great resource for atmospheric electricity. That, and Florida State University has some great pages about it. Shoot, maybe it's Florida Tech. One of those two does lightning testing and studies electrical phenomena. The ionosphere is indeed net Positive charge, but, the ionosphere is not specifically the cloud layer. Clouds have mechanical processes at work that rub together particles and create separate charges within the cloud. Cloud-to-Cloud and Intracloud strikes happen do to this charge separation. The earth is Net negative.
Wonder if Matthew is thinking like I am. That if you knew the amount of atmospheric electricity in the area above the earth, at different levels, could you not build a craft using High voltage that would call on the different levels to levitate it by using a built in device like your voltage multiplier inside to vary the transfer of the neg, and positive charges to both the earth and atmosphere. Please don't chide me if I sound too crazy. I have no degrees per say in physics or other science, but I did stay one time at a Holiday Inn. :) Figure you would be talking VERY VERY high voltage though for any kind of mass, you would want to lift.
@@carmanharman3759 Yes, i am thinking along those lines... but also. harnessing those charges.... I was thing.. "Voltages increase the higher we go, but then that is the overall voltage between given heights and earth... the differential voltages might stay relatively the same the further up we travel... TDG, great seeing you as always! If I was a jedi, i'd definitely be on the dark side.
At first, I thought that he was making another electromagnetic device.
ElectroBOOM's response to this video brought me here. This levitation experiment is so beautiful and cute! And you're a great physics host: +1 subscribers.
Honored to have you in the family, Ron!
I wonder if there would be any improvement if the foil was shaped like the star trek logo, though to have it snad up initially may need to be a tripod
There's also a vid wth a guy levitating polystyrene balls and paper
ruclips.net/video/u-OXXKCLSQE/видео.html yes the shape affect the results.
Hi Gabe. I saw your comment about having done this before. It appears you are correct. Nice work.
1:31 when you say "perhaps it could be replaced by hand" you triggered ElectroBOOM
One hand rule
So that explains why I didn't die when I held contacts from a 240V AC mains
Of course ! That's how it works isn't it ?
Safe isolation ? Not a problem with the old one hand In the pocket trick 😅
Aaahh sarcasm. . . .
Yeah nah yeah the internet is a fun place to learn fun innocence things
But the one hand rule doesnt make any sense when you are standing on the aluminum foil like in this video. The current will flow from your one hand across your chest to your feet.
The one hand rule only make sense when your feet are isolated.
Ok I had 2 more experiences since I posted this
1.
In the shower during a storm , I touched the handle and I felt a muscle in my left hand contract or expand , then I felt the lower parts of my muscles on my legs contract or expand
2. A slight shock from a motor I hacked open, there were a lot of arcs forming at the bottom of it, the motor is from a bullet blender and it was connected to 240V AC
Correct me if I m wrong
Flow of Electrons is from negative to positive...As u connect the Aluminium foil to positive ...the cations or the positive ions ..spread to whole Al plate..while u connect the negative to ur palm ...which then anions float to your hand
While the Voltage is equal to Work done in bringing a unit charge unit from one point to another point...so as the cations spread throughout the Al sheet...the Volatge makes more effort...and helps
*Transferring electrons from ur hard to The Al sheet*
As according to Charge by conduction method...The small Al sheet placed on large Al sheet..picks up the exact positive charge and by Unlike charge attraction law ... The Al sheet gets closer to ur hand and levitates..and as the foil moves up...Charge by induction method starts making the foil lower part Negative and foil upper part positive..but as soon as the Distance between them increases the Electro-static force decrease..and then the foil drops again...then the cycle repeats ...if during levitation the The foil comes on steady state ...then it's ions are adjusted by the fields....the hand as negative ...pushes electrons downwards and attracts the positive ones ..as u said from 4:30 (I guess)
And by the Formula Voltage = Di electric constant multiply by Charge ...whole divided by Distance..so it levitates more quickly as the distance between ur hand and small Al sheet is reduced as Voltage keeps on increasing and increasing...making transferring of charge more quick😊😊
By the way ..great video...love from India 🇮🇳🇮🇳
5:45 yeah, tell @ElectroBOOM about the one hand rule 🙈
Yea, good idea :) but please use our right hand and not your left ^^ thanks
GREAT VIDEO :) took me back 15 years
Glad to hear you beat me to it! That's amazing....so, you found success with a symmetrical object such as what you used with the drill bit shape?
Hey Jay you should do some experiments with heavier objects and use show some formulas :)
I've only seen a few of your videos, and now I'm hooked. Random science things are cool as hell
Welcome to the family
I was soo confused when i saw this was uploaded 11minutes ago. I thought i have seen a video like this before.
The big difference in this one is that he's using his body in the circuit! Very cool application of his past video
@@mykulpierce yeah its pretty amazing.
I did it years before. The video is on my channel. On this account that i'm comenting. You can click and see. But nice version he made too.
I did it with my body too. And my system is portable. It's a bag and it is called eletrohand.
@@tty025x you did it 2years ago he also did it 2years ago, only difference is he didn't do it with his hand
Thank goodness for 2 am rabbit holes. Fantastic video.

Whoa! That's pretty damn cool man. Nice 1 👍
5:18 what if you charge your body up to 70.000 voltz
Answer : you die and end up looking like darth Vader whit no cool suit but you'll still have the breathing noise
Funny thing is you already get regularly charged thousands of volts. That doorknob shock after wearing plastic slippers? Those slippers charged you couple of thousand volts. Enough to make an arc.
It's the amps that kills
"Including the human body"
Sure hope someone doesn't try this with their body as the levitating object. You won't just be a corpse, you'll be a levitating corpse!
Just one thing about safety:
It is wrong to say that "if you keep one hand in your pocket electricity wouldn't flow in your chest".
And believe me when you 68 you need all the cool places you can get! carry on!
One day Time Travel will be possible with high voltage....😃
Mark my words....🔥
Time Travel may be improbable, but dimensional travel may be probable...
@@PlasmaChannel Electrifying and Awesome

Parabéns pelo bom rabalho
I from un poco de todo
Welcome to my channel, friend!
Wonderful, each and every video has one thing common *high voltage* yet I never get bored to watch your videos!

@@KeiranR Hey, I interpreted it not in any negative way at all. Again, i'm honored to have you in my Plasma Fam!
I actually found this channel though a "Electroboom channel" video and I'm so glad I did. This guy is my new electronic hero.
Awesome I love learning about this as I am currently studying and practicing telekinesis.
This was one of the coolest science videos I've ever seen!! I also especially enjoyed your cold plasma video and thought it was inspiring!
It would be nice if I could get half as many views someday for my ion thrusters with onboard power!
Nice man!!

I don't understand why this channel is so underrated
Thank you. That means a lot.
Thanks for the video. Worked just you as you described. Fascinating!
What was the modified power supply for the ladder? Looks like a battery and a circuit from what? A mini flyback xfrmr and SCR? where would one of those be found?
You outdid yourself once aqain Jay! Cool stuff. I guess this works kinda like " Paul Traps " ? Always glad to see your new videos. : )
55Ramius! Thanks dude. This one is my personal favorite.
I came just because the electroBOOM's video but this was pretty well explained and cool to see.
You have a new subscriber 😉
Hi Angel, welcome to my channel! Thanks for the compliments. Just wait till you see my next video 🙃
Man this channel is just great and you deserve much more.
What if you charge the top plate with positive 70 kilovolts and bottom plate with negative 70 kilovolts instead of zero volts? Will the foil now float stable in the middle of both plates?
The voltage is always 0 until a Potential current is established...
Just discovered your channel because of Mehdi's video. You have very good and interesting content! Subbed!

Your channel should have much more views!
This looks super cool
Me here to support ElectoBOOM's friends ;)
btw nice vid mate!
Legend! Thanks!

Nice demonstration Jay. Not sure that a hand to foot current path is much of an improvement over a hand to hand path though. If I was going to do this, I would stand on an insulated platform and connect the HV to the wrist or elbow of my "working" arm, probably through a current limiting resistor.
That is awesome Jay!
Thanks!
Excellent demo. Thank you

Hi Gabe. I do think you doing it first was cool. I had no idea you did this before, so props to you.
I'm still experimenting... Thanks for the comment.

So.... can you have the foil ' foam coated ' ( alllowing points exposed for the discharge ) so it looks like it isn't conductive?
