    In 2013, it's a toy and/or a tool for learning about positive and negative electrical charge.
    In the 1800s when it was invented, it was a groundbreaking tool for generating electrical charges for medicine and scientific experiments.

    Great video and explanation. What I am missing though is the impact of the fact that the two perpendicular bars, one on either side are electrically connected. At least they are connected in the two commercial Wimhurst machines that I have.

  • @paulfogarty7724
    @paulfogarty7724 9 лет назад +7

    The machine is built to resemble an antique lab machine, thats why it has no motor, also you have more control over the speed of the discs by hand cranking - its not because they never thought of powering it with a motor, thats hardly " thinking outside the box "

    Clear explanation, thank you. But I have a question:
    This process needs some charge on a plate at start, right?
    What if we grounded the plates so that no charge is on them?
    After grounding, if we turn the wheels again, would the process happen again or fail?
    Do we need to provide some starting charge by ways like connecting a battery on opposite plates in order to make this process work again?

  • @JulieStardoll
    @JulieStardoll 11 лет назад

    Yes. As I have learnt you can create an an initial charge on the disk by using the tribo electric effect (bring a charged rod close to the disk and turn it for a few seconds).

  • @AbelACastelao
    @AbelACastelao 10 лет назад +1

    In the first step, the negative charge in the back wheel induces a positive charge in the front wheel and the brush, and then induces a negative in the other end of the brush in the front wheel. In the second step, the negative charge (at left ) flows through the air and the untoched electrode becomes negative. I mean, the negative charge in the left of the disk, must induce a positive charge in the untouchin elctrodes, and then a negative charge in the leyden jar. Why is not the same in the two steps???

    how hard was it to crank? would a small electric motor work? i figure a small voltaic pile could output a useable amount of electricity to amplify using one of those things and use 2 timing relays or a double sided timing relay switch to output squarewave ac, which could be trimmed with a capacitor and maybe a resistor for smooth sine waves and output the high voltage with a transformer tuned right figuring the windings.

    You actually don't need to use brushes, just having plates in close proximity will be enough (instead of brushes). The electric field exists without physical contact. Testatika machine doesn't use brushes. Awesome video, thanx for posting :)

    There is one thing i don't get. Why does the brush induce an opposite charge on the other side of the wheel?
    If a negative charge for example is caused by an excess of electrons, shouldn't the brush distribute this excess equally, making both sides less negatively charged but still negative?
    Thanks for your answers.

    I can't understand. At the beginning of the explanation it is said "suppose", and the negative charge appears at the top of the back plate. What happens with the negative charges coming from the bottom? Can that happens at all? Also, what happens with the front plate at the beginning? Isn't it interacting with the back plate as well just from the start? I feel something is missing. I really need an answer; it is for an important project.
    Thank you very much.

  • @Galv140577
    @Galv140577 10 лет назад

    So if you replaced the hand-crank kinetic input with a fly-wheel of some sort with magnets or solenoids on it & used the charge from the electrodes to pulse some solenoids on a stator around the fly-wheel the resulting magnetic force would attract-repel the wheel in such a way as to make it spin & possibly make the entire set-up self-running. Would it run itself & provide free excess energy output?

    • @fidelcatsro6948
      @fidelcatsro6948 10 лет назад

      the amps produced are tiny contrary to the high voltages induced on the capacitors.However its worth trying out to see if those high voltage discharges could be somehow stepped down to lower voltages and better amps as result of the conversion with some form of step down transformer. The testatika has some strange similarities with the wimhurst machine but the similarities stop there and other unknown secrets added to it make it an overunity machine!

    • @oscarwylder
      @oscarwylder 9 лет назад

      You have to take into account losses - Every time you step-up or down you incur these losses. - One day when a whole circuit can run as superconducting it will still never create power, only run even and even then there is no excess to take advantage of. - Regards and kudos.

    • @Galv140577
      @Galv140577 9 лет назад

      Oscar Wylder In a transformer the energy loss in the primary is due to the back-emf from the secondary bringing the power-factor to 1. There is a type of transformer that has 2 secondaries & the back-emfs go to each other & assist the primary instead of going to the primary, the power factor always remains at zero, & the efficiency is well over 100%, typically over 300%, because it works like a flux-diode only allowing flux from the primary to the secondary but not allowing the back-emf to draw real power from the primary, instead the real power comes from the reversal of negative feedback turning it into positive cross-feedback between the 2 outputs. Just look up "Bi-Toroid-Transformer"
      Have a nice day.

  • @pacerodi

    Would, two perpetual motion apparatus, mounted as the disks of a Wimshurst Machine itself, against each other, give enough positive and negative charge, in order to be collected by a tesla antennae or to be harnessed by capacitors ?

    • @david203
      @david203 8 лет назад +8

      +Pacero No such thing as perpetual motion, period. Would violate laws of physics. Nothing has ever violated the laws of physics, which is why they are laws rather than hypotheses or theories.

    • @cjames2925
      @cjames2925 8 лет назад +1

      All motion is perpetual, which is why we have never achieved perfect zero and no vaccum or closed system exists to test the basic laws, period. Which is why laws are broken, they're models of an ideal. Facts are models and models aren't factual. You know nothing

    • @JasonLin1
      @JasonLin1 7 лет назад +1

      Because it takes energy to pull apart attractive charges. The attractive forces of the charges will slow the disk down. Same as David said above and conservation of energy.

  • @aracknidd
    @aracknidd 10 лет назад

    So, would this charge process fail if there was't any starting neg charge? Is it the brush that creates the boundary for the triboelectric rubbing effect by exchanging electrons with the plastic and metal plates?

    • @electrostaticionengines4579
      @electrostaticionengines4579 10 лет назад

      No, there is no triboelectric effect used to start the generation. The spinning of the disc causes the metal sections to pass each other and starts generating by induction. That is why it is called a influence generator. The Wimshurst machine can and does reverse polarity from time to time.

    • @aracknidd
      @aracknidd 10 лет назад

      ELECTROSTATIC ION ENGINES when induction is describe on wikipedia there is a starting charge used to cause a separation. Are you saying the opposing movement of 2 pieces of metal induce the starting charge?

      if rotated in the opposite direction the charge builds up on the top and bottom sectors of rotation instead of left and right. There are no charge collectors to collect the charge, but you can hear the disks crackle with static and feel it if you put a finger near..

      thats the original design of the machine

    • @emikoussi14
      @emikoussi14 7 лет назад

      You can do it with gear. Its up to you. The only problem is, that a gear can be noisy while this solution is silent. I tried when I was making my Wimhurst.
      This solution is the easiest version to build.

    So if one wheel was a starter motor and the other wheel a alternator by making them turn opposite to each other the interlinking exciter wire if placed onto the water and oil by relays off there sender units would make the whole engine a closed loop static field and then tee off on to the aluminium head to make the capacitor/condenser which would keep discharging as the valves open and close by magnetic attraction repulsion.

    • @Dethleffff

      There are brushes on the things left and right that reach over the two plates and have the black caps. You can see them at 0:43 , they are the contacts that charge the Leyden jars.

    Does static "ARC or "FLASH"

    • @sparkitelectrostatics5825
      @sparkitelectrostatics5825 6 лет назад

      because static electricity sources are usually of low current, they cannot sustain an arc. The current will charge up any capacitance until there is a flashover (spark).

  • @CUBETechie
    @CUBETechie 6 лет назад

    What would happen if the disc has a diameter of 1m

    • @sparkitelectrostatics5825
      @sparkitelectrostatics5825 6 лет назад

      you can get more voltage with larger disks as the distance any leakage or flashover (usually between sectors) has to go is longer. 1m could probably get around 300,000V.

Used a wool sweater to charge it and then discharged it to my homemade Lyden jar. Do this 20 times and the lyden builds up quite a ZAP! One inch long spark......Such fun days!!!

      Wimhurst and Van de Graaff machines are similar, but the Wimhurst is older and has a significantly lower breakdown voltage. The sparks are similar.
      Leyden jars should always give you pause. They were the first electric device capable of delivering a lethal shock. Benjamin Franklin used them to slaughter turkeys and survived a nasty shock himself.
      While a demonstration machine should be safe, it's a good idea to dig deeper into the safety engineering if you're experimenting with Leyden jars or any other high-voltage capacitor.
