Hi! I am from Argentina, where the 504 has thousands of fans. My dad had in the 1990s a 504 diesel, 2.3l with hydraulic assisted direction, and He told that It was the most comfortable car He never owned. Since last year, I have a 1997 XSD AA (diesel, INDENOR engine, 2.3l , Air Conditioner edition). I made a 1500km trip, stopping only to get fuel, go to the bathroom, and buy coffee and food (We had lunch "on the road"). My wife does not drive, so I did all the driving. I got out at our end of route and found that I was ...like new! No pain, no cramps....really like being in your living room´s coach! I enjoyed your video a lot! Hugs from Argentina!
Great. Diesels were few in Kenya but once in a while one pops up. I only know of a couple of organisations that bought fleet of pickups from the dealer. I hear the diesels are particular on coolant used, which one do you use/recommend?
@@vs6300 I never heard that diesels need a particular coolant. I use in my cars a good one and always use demineralized water (NOT distilled water, because It's ACIDIC) Demineralized because IT has no minerals in it, so the will not deposit in the cooling ducts or the radiator's interior.
Peugeots were just outstanding. This reminds me of my old man's 505 SW, KAJ 883Z. That car was simply amazing. One fine easter while travelling to the country side, i was dead asleep in the last row seat like a king...kidogo kidogo mzee steps on the brakes and i find myself against the center console. Anytime I think of the impact from back then, i still feel the pain. Mzee lashed out in kikuyu that i should remember hiyo ni "fai" and not my bed.....mambo ya kulala kwa gari yake niliwacha.
My dad had one of these. That noise was iconic. We could hear him coming home and be on our best behaviour. Then those headlights! Very bright. Towards the end of had a lot of oil leakage problems
Thanks for you wonderful video paying tribute this iconic vehicle. In our family we have owned about 7 Peugeots and I still own a 404 from 1969. The 1618cc (1.6) was in the 404. 504 was introduced with the 1786cc (1.8) engine, which was similar to the the one in the 404 but with a longer piston travel. Then later, around 1970 came the 1971cc (2.0 liter) engine with included the longer piston travel of the 1.8 but now also with an enlarged piston, thus giving the engine and enlarged capacity but actually based on the same fundamental architecture of the 404 engine. In fact the 504 was fundamentally an improved 404 as it was largely based on the same mechanicals but with a more modern and larger body, improved suspension and higher capacity engines. The gearbox was also carried over from the 404. The nice thing about this is that you can quite easily put 504 engines into a 404. This will transform the light 404, for example put a 2.0 liter 504 engine into a 404 and you have a very fast car, as the 404 is lighter and you are now adding about 20% extra power.
Had a Peugeot 504 for almost twenty years great car, we did a trip with the wife and daughter Melbourne to Queensland after half the roads were in real bad condition after floods the 504 left the hot hatches for dead just sailed over these rough roads no problem.
What made me fall in love with this lion was one occasion in 1997 during the El Nino rains. We were coming from upcountry and the roads were slippery. Then a 504 pickup came to our rescue and we were like 20 of us. After boarding and taking off, we reached a place where it was clayish with some pot holes and vehicles got stuck. This beast did not even struggle. Ilipita kupita mpaka watu wakashangaa coz it was loaded. Even I was amazed and I was a small boy then... Long live 504.
My father bought these Peugeot 504 and 505 brand new when he worked as Veterinary doctor for the Unite Nations during the mid eighties and early 2000s, when we were in Southern Africa lovely cars. Peugeot were able to build these brilliant cars because the roads on the countryside's of France used to be as bad as those in rural East Africa. Thanks Mr Carnavasion
The Peugeot which came from France had a 5 stud hub, like the sort my father had, they also came mostly with Air conditioning , they especially the SR came with the rubber strip round the sides and the horizontal short bars on the front bumper.
Just finished watching this and I look out through the window only to see a 504 police car near thr view point just before Lari. It looks rugged but iko na thrill! Good job Team Carnversations
Muruthi, Ngatia, Faai ... The African legend. There eill be faster cars, there will be safer cars, but none of them will much the spirit, the longevity and the versatility of the 504
The sound is everything, then the comfort. I remember our neighbour getting a brand new one back in 95 KAE. Weirdly it was the only peugeot my dad never bought juu ya mafuta he had a 404 and a 304 . @@sammiemwangi5728 The first KAAs-A came out in 1990/91 after KZZ 999. Another neighbor had a KAA Toyota corolla 90 bought new from Toyota Kenya in 1991and that being the start of the era of gari za importation, the plate numbers took about a year to a year and a half to change form KAB to KAC for example with KAEs being put on newly registered cars in or around 1995 and 1996. There will never be another vehicle like the Peugeot! The 404 is the one i learned how to drive with having the column mounted gear lever below the steering next to the dash board. Then the 504 with its acceleration power and famous roar was a joy to hear! As for the 504 when it was taken to the garage for service, the mechanic would only be satisfied that he has done his job after tuning the engine until it roared at that high pitch sound! The 505 was another masterclass too. The 405s looked posh but were very problematic always having mechanical problems especially the ones imported from UK!
As always, every episode of the redriven series are a pure joy to watch them. The 504 in particular bears praises from old folks all over the country. In particular, this car had very few mechanical problems unlike any other from the 60s to date. One important thing you didn't mention was that overhauls were very easy on this model; replace the pistons and sleeves, then the vehicle resembles one from the showroom. 😂🙌🙌 Keep up the "alluring" motor vehicle experience.
The pickups were actually 1800CC as well as the newer salons. The older saloons were the 2000 CC and way more comfortable than the newer ones coz they had all round independent suspension as well as disc brakes. The injection ones were the 504 Ti. The 3 speed gearboxes were actually by GM. The ZF transmissions were used in the 505's. Great and hilarious review!!
The older 2000cc peugeots were also way faster they were the only ones with a 200kph speedo. The newer ones were 160 and 180kph max.I know someone who bought a South African modified 404 saloon at an auction back in 97' that had been converted to a pickup than had a 2000cc 504 engine and a 5sp box with a floor mounted shifter. That car was very light and would fly mpaka the guy akajimwaga nayo destroying it.
I still love the hum of the 504's engine. Kikuyus called it Muruthi meaning Simba, or fai, for five, in the 504. Hii gari ilikuwa mwendo kasi, na ya wadosi, not so long ago.
My Dad had a Peugeot 305 back then and that thing was super comfy and fast. It was one of the 1st saloons back then that came in Front Wheel Drive. Only problem of the Peugeots back then was the instrument cluster. Most failed especially the speedo. I've heard you saying the speedo ain't working and I wasn't surprised 😂. Another problem was that the monocoque chasis wasn't bullet proof. The body tended to warp over time and it would affect the functionality of the car doors. You needed either to bang it so hard to lock, or sometimes it wouldn't lock properly. Most of their car door handles got broken as a result of tryng to force the door open. Apart from that it was a gudu one.
The only 504 engines I know are the 1.6L (1618cc), 1.8L (1796cc) and 2.0L (1971cc). For the 1.6L, it was used by the GRs and the first pickups. Actually, they shared the same engine with the 404. Nice review, you can also add the genius diagonal mounting of the shock absorbers to deflect/ cancel the up and down motion on rough roads. It also comes with big cushioned seats with lots of material and springs adding up to the comfort. You would have mentioned technicality of switching on the lights alongside the left ignition key operation.

there was a motion in perlament to ban them from being packed near banks but it failed because politicians also used it. Matiba infact said "You do not throw away all apples because one is an orrange"
The original engine was 1971cc. The pick up initially came with a 1618 cc engine. This was was later upgraded to 1971cc. There was an injection engine and TI version. A fairly good review.
Mannu my guy Sego Bay is your number 1 motor vehicle dealer. I would recommend anyone needing to buy a car. Sego Bay is the place, Honesty at it's best!
This car run on only two pistons and you only need spanner no. 11,13,15,17, and 19. 21 was for wheels. Tuning you needed a bonnet, screw driver, a nose and set of ears.
The 504 Gearbox outlasted every other Component of the Car. It is almost impossible to find a mechanic who repaired or Overhauled a Peugeot 504/Gearbox.
Some times back I was driving from Mombasa to Nairobi in a Toyota townace Kuna PEUGEOT 504 ilikuwa ina ni overtake kimchezo inafika mbela inapumzika nifike before he pulls another despairing act in. This car was worth the name.

there was a motion in perlament to ban them from being packed near banks but it failed because politicians also used it.
Matiba infact said "You do not throw away all apples because one is an orrange"
I remember my grandpa's 504 KNG, we used to call it Kuna Nuru Gizani
That is heavy deep knowledge and research
Thanks
such a majestic car gone are the days
The original engine was 1971cc. The pick up initially came with a 1618 cc engine. This was was later upgraded to 1971cc.
There was an injection engine and TI version. A fairly good review.
Pick up was 1796 cc not 1971 cc
Mannu my guy Sego Bay is your number 1 motor vehicle dealer. I would recommend anyone needing to buy a car. Sego Bay is the place, Honesty at it's best!
The suspension is still so soft on these rough roads, driving it is so engaging, you can't sleep on the road 😅
i always loved the peugeot 04 series!
most beautiful cars ever😁
This is a Must Buy for my collection 💯✔️
Hi Fani. Get in touch have something for you.. a blue 504 saloon.
My dad had three at different times between 1998 and 2003.
This car run on only two pistons and you only need spanner no. 11,13,15,17, and 19. 21 was for wheels. Tuning you needed a bonnet, screw driver, a nose and set of ears.
It’s funny looking at Mbugua on the back seat, very attentive when u guys are talking about tuning the carburetor 😂
By then Mbugua wasn't even an egg 😂😂😂😂
What a coincidence my Toyota 100 is KAJ401W

Loved to ride in the backseat in a 504 when I was a kid (here in Sweden). My father has 2 in the period 1969 to 1975. Then he got a BMW.
Learned to drive on these. They had 4x4 by Dangel as well.
Those were very rare in Kenya. I remember seeing one in Eldoret but a 505.

I learned and perfected by driving skills with my father's Peugeot 504.
The 504 Gearbox outlasted every other Component of the Car. It is almost impossible to find a mechanic who repaired or Overhauled a Peugeot 504/Gearbox.
That's correct.
Some times back I was driving from Mombasa to Nairobi in a Toyota townace Kuna PEUGEOT 504 ilikuwa ina ni overtake kimchezo inafika mbela inapumzika nifike before he pulls another despairing act in. This car was worth the name.
