I think the colour of the coolant doesn't really matter. It is just a dye that companies use to identify with their brands. A coolant is a mixture of 80% water and 20% additives (Anti-corrosion and/or anti-freeze additives). The anti-freeze (glycol) additive is not necessary in the hot climates such as Kenya. The quality of the anti-corrosion additive is what matters in an engine coolant as it needs to have a high boiling point and specific heat capacity.
Some coolants come as concentrates which need to be mixed with water at a specified ratio (on the packaging) and most of coolants in the Kenyan market come as premixed from the blending plants so no need for mixing with water.
I couldn't agree more. 👍
Awesome chemistry class
In Kenya there's no need of using coolant it's just a business thing someone came with . Corrosive part you talking about that will only happen when you drain water but why would you drain water from the Engine?
Thank you so much for make this guy to know his technical knowledge we only have two types of coolant brother Ethylene glycol and proplyn glycol only what this guy needs to know is that the colour is just a marketing brands die that are used but he should not confuse people saying that pink and green
@@stevebenzmcogare Hahahaha. Chuma na maji kwanza ya chumvi itakuumiza bro. You might have to change your whole radiator.
Mr. Wokabi.I think you got your facts a bit mixed up on this one. Coolant is simply a water and antifreeze + + mix. Firstly, impurities, generally, raise the boiling point of water not lower it. Secondly, inorganic coolant is better suited for the older engines made from cast iron because they have chemicals that better inhibit corrosion as compared to organic coolants. Organic coolants are better suited for newer engine applications because the alloys used,(generally alluminium alloys) are less susceptible to corrosion by water and organic compounds. They are also a lot more friendly to the environment at time of disposal or accidental spills. Finally, the colours are a guide with pink or blue indicating organic acids and phosphates and greed indicating inorganic additives (mainly silicates)
This explains the pink coolant you generally find in newer cars.
So yeah, if your car has an aluminium block, stick to the pink coolant (organic) and green for the cast iron lot. (Inorganic).
Tell him...you choose your struggle 100 or 100+
Wrong tittle. It should have been why a wrong coolant can damage your car engine. On the contrary the right coolant prolongs the life of your car engine.
I agree 👍🏿 on this one 👌🏿
Buda, next talk about recommended batteries for various cars. The type of fueling(v-power/unleaded)
The optimal pressure for them tires.
The levels of fueling and whether it is ok to park your car without fuel for longer periods like 3 - 4 months like when you travelling out of the country.
Finally talk about the different fluids and when to replace them..like brake fluids, steering fluids, etc
I second you
Coolant do not damage the car engine “coolant” keeps the engine from overheating putting water in ya engine is what cause parts to rust then break stop giving away cap 🧢
He is a bull shooter.
Green coolants are for cars from 2011 downward
I think you need to watch the video first before commenting. 😂😂
@@bensonmutuku3278 honestly I think you should watch the video first before commenting I think u put water in your car to which is bad for the engine it rust parts
Wewe tafuta chanel yako upige show yako 😂😂 what he says is final
Green,Red, Pink, orange, yellow, purple, blue…. Can never rely on color. Your owners manual will guide as to which coolant to use.
Conventional (oldskool) is propylene glycol based, Organic acid technology is the new type and Hybrid has both properties. Only mix with distilled/deionized water to avoid mineral deposits.
@bw you are very correct. You cannot rely on color to determine type of coolant! Erick please get all facts right
I agree colour shouldnt be the main feature to look at but the composition of the coolant. Even on the car manufacturers manual it doesn't say use orange, blue etc
😂😂 wokabi umeanza kutupea stress, listening to you is like googling your symptoms it will tell you unakufa kesho. Anyways, so do you mix the coolant with water ama you buy 20 litres of coolant when flashing?
Ratio 1:1
Pink is what I use.
Thanks Wokabi. I am now well informed. Could you do an episode on cleaning engines. I have always grappled with the question on whether to wash my engine or not.

Watu wa ORANGE COOLANT twende wapi
Wokabi ,am still waiting for Nissan xtrail review coz am interested with buying one.
Battery water is a great coolant also because it’s ionized and hence won’t make your engine rust.
Impurities increase boiling point, they don’t lower. They lower melting point.
in areas like Netherlands, the temperature goes as low as -15 . it is good to use coolant since it does freezes
THANK YOU FOR TELLING US NOTHING.
For Japanese cars the best coolant i'd recommend is Toyota's Super Long Life Coolant which you can buy from Toyota Kenya, Toyotsu or any shop that deals with genuine Toyota parts. Yes it is hybrid coolant and its the stuff they use from factory from the smallest petrol Vitz & Passo to the bigger diesel V8s and Prados. And Toyota themselves claim its good for 5yrs or 100,000kms.
I really like how comprehensive your channel is...moving beyond car reviews to provide us with maintenance tips, which help us make more informed decisions and question our mechanics for better results. Looking forward to more great content! 🙂👍

Wale wa water coolants hit like
What of Blue coolant, is it organic/inorganic or hybrid?
Good question 🤔
Point of correction impurities do not lower boiling points
Impurities lower the boiling point.
Correct. Impurities increase boiling point and lower melting point
It lowers
Hehehe, usiseme "it is a mixture," watu watazichanganya. Sema "it is a blend of the two."
😂😂😂😂 true
Boss, This one you got me, I had no Idea, I could use any as I thought the contents were similar, green and pink was just colour and is really not significant. Lesson learnt.

I have an old VW Golf MK3 1995 that am currently using but needs several things. Paint work, Suspension, Interior re-do and some engine touch ups though i recently serviced it with new plugs, Total Semi synthetic oil, all filters and changed the piston rings. Can your garage do these things and where are you located?
Good info as usual. Coolant was invented mostly for use in those regions in the world that experience winter to prevent the cooling system that used water from freezing into ice and cracking the engine block. It has a very low freezing point. It is better than water due to its anti corrosion ingredients but it can still cause it if left for too long and in the wrong mix. It will accelerate galvanic corrosion which is the corrosion of different types of engine metals that are in contact like steel, iron and aluminium. Another way that it can get corrosive is if the engine and by extension the radiator is not grounded well. It can become an electrolyte and promote metal corrosion by electrolysis. By ingredients the coolant we use is almost 90% percent water and 10% "coolant'( anti freeze) while in winter countries the mix is 50/50 .
There's a difference between antifreeze and coolant
@@bortstanson2034 Coolant is the mixture of antifreeze and water. You can use 100% antifreeze in an engine but it will just be an expensive exercise for nothing.A 50/50 mix works perfectly to prevent coolant freezing.
You will certainly destroy your car's engine way faster running just straight water; even distilled.......Like serious overheating problems, premature water pump wear out , to name a couple.
Water cools an engine better than coolant, the problem is rust and freezing
@@pharezknights5467 ...and lack of lubrication.
Very informative!!! My vehicle is using the green coolant which I never thought much about apart from checking the levels regularly... after watching this video, it turns out that I have been using the wrong coolant - I should be using the pink coolant instead of the green one because my vehicle has an aluminium block. The things you learn!!! Glad I have known earlier than later.
Good content. Can you keep the videos shorter though?
Dip stick party of Kenya, ingiza dip stick Pima oil😁😂iyo ni kali sana

It's for the views,. Most RUclipsrs do it to attract viewers so they have to put an attractive headers
Mr stop misleading public....been using my golf mk 5 only with coolant....no problem whatsoever.
For how long?
Very misleading video title.. :) ..but yes, the content is a helpful guide. You can also add distilled water to the list of acceptable coolant types as it has a high(er) thermal capacity to most.
Was told ati you can dilute coolant na maji for better performance. Ni ukweli??
The guy is correct. Infact very correct. Most guys are talking of distilled water which is very wrong. Older engines where distilled water was used had a thin layer of zinc oxide on the inner part of the engine that's why distilled water with nil hardness is calcium and magnesium sulfate was allowed. Right now your modern coolant is a designed multifunctional liquid of. Ethelyne glycol which acts as an antifreeze and nitrite based corrosion inhibitor which acts as an oxygen Scavenger once, the oxygen in the closed cooling system is consumed to turn the nitrite to nirates, reason you sometimes might see which suspension in your coolant in the radiator. So using distilled H²O is a no for my engine. Use the above only
You are doing a good work bro but becareful about the videos originated from Scotty Kilmer
Ok. Thanks
Scoty is an alarmist proper
Those in search of information, here you need to trend carefully. Just know there is coolant in a car and in different colors and different from each other. They have antifreeze, antirust, .... Do your homework. Nice eye opener Erick.
Excellent content. I've experienced burst pipes in the cooling system after some mechs claimed to have flushed the radiator.
It looked clean on the outside. But since that job, it was downhill. Saa hii the engine is getting rebuilt.
Can you demonstrate the outcome of a flush?
Also, kindly review additives in the market and their claims.
We shall be talking about additives soon

Wow! Thanks for this like you said it’s often overlooked. It literally just happened to me. A corroded pipe caused leakage. I just got it fixed and I’m using water to test out any leaks before flashing and doing coolant. I was definitely using the wrong coolant and will switch to the correct one thanks I love your content ntacheza pale tinypesa 😂
Remember the ratio of coolant to water is 1:1 do not use coolant alone otherwise
If you put water alone in ur car it will cause the water jackets around the cylinders to clog as well as the radiator because of rust. Coolant is a mixture of Ethylene Glycol andater. Ethylene Glycol has anti rust properties. You need to add coolant as well
as water in ur radiator for ur cooling system of ur car to perform well.
Hello sir , can u do something on mechanics please , mechanics have become the biggest letdown and rogues in the car repair industry , brokering spare parts to clients , harvesting parts , overcharging , wrong diagnosis etc , thanks
Water has a bp of 100degrees while coolant bp is 450 degrees

Kindly rectify this to prevent people from making mistakes
Impurities don't lowere boiling point of liquids but increase their BPs.
Impurities in the solution increase the boiling point. This is because impurities decrease the water molecules available for vaporisation during boiling. A greater amount of heat is needed to make the same amount of impure solution to vapourize than the heat that is required to make a pure solution vaporize. Therefore, leading to the rise of the overall boiling point of the solution.
Depends on the impurity.
Can go either way
Hello. My bluebird sylphy came with blue coolant. Seems blue one is difficulty to get around. Which one do i replace with. Just as you have said, mechanics tell me colour doennt matter , that i put any. Which one do i use
How did u solve this coz am also stranded..blue is not found
Pink or red coolant and mix 50% with water
What People don't know: These coolants take longer to reach 100C the temperature at which most cars are programmed to turn on the fan. The coolant will stay at about 95C for very long without hitting 100C leading to actually an overheating car . Your temp. gauge won't indicate it's overheating though because it's just slightly below 100C
Water heats up faster and turns on fans faster to dissipate the heat.
The car's cooling systems are also programmed with the thermal properties of water not some random cooling liquid no one knows what it's made of.
People like you should be banned from giving any automotive advice.
Woow Great Advice ..Makes sense ..
Omondi Fredrick : re-read your essay n see if you are making any sense :you ve written a whole novel yet you ain't saying anything.
Even a class 4 drop out will avoid such nonsense takes
You need to carefully read what the bottle says. It’s not safe to rely on the colour, as there's no regulation on what colour to use on specific coolants.
Always double check your owner’s manual to determine the type of coolant your system needs....
I wish he could have mentioned this..but it seems he didn't do his research comprehensively

I had an overheating issue with Nissan Elgrande 2012, I wanted to install the CVT cooling system but on opening the gearbox cooler; The cooling pipes had blocked with a green coolant, which was a relief as the external cooling system would cost alot. The mechanic washed the radiator pipes and gearbox coolant part and the car runs smoothly now. Though we added water, I will top up with 50% pink coolant for proper cooling and engine performace.
Erick there is a green coolant with dark green that damaged my car in 2019 so they should buy that light green coolant

Coolant in anything thats made of steel is highly recommended because it reduces plain water from rusting components, but alloy engines you can get away with just using water as aluminium doesnt rust like steel does. But generally coolant is recommended in all engines thesedays regardless of their make or model or year of manufacture.

Coolants we used it in Lathe machines to cool down the heat when machining cast iron steel etc. So it will help engine to cool down when running. I used mixed pink/orange coolant with 50/50 distilled water.
I think you are on crock maybe only in Africa I don’t know where you get this from.
Am a woman pls dont give me a sleepless night..A disease you dont dont know does not kill you.
Using the wrong coolant is bad news on an engine, it can create a chemical imbalance, cause sludge, leaks, inefficient cooling, and clog up your cooling system, using the wrong coolant is bad. That's why it's best to use what the dealer recommends but some people say some aftermarket coolants are better than original coolant but if in doubt then just change it with original oem stuff on a normal basis.
I agree with you.

Mine is using blue coolant, which is rare to find in Kenya. Can I flash it and use the red one?
I have been to Europe and while I was there I discovered that they have 4 different coolant colors namely green, orange, pink and blue. I recently saw a common brand used in Europe called shield at carrefour shelves and all those four coolant colors were available. I think it would have helped if you focused on all four.. my two cents though 🤔
Mostly green and red or pink has been widely used to distinguish the two differences in alkalinity but as I stated there are hybrid or synthetic versions that may come in different colours what is important is to carefully analyse the quality, standard and specifications of your car before you purchase one
