Old cars, especially diesels, are built to last. This car may even see 1000000 km.
There's a Volvo, still rolling, after 5000000 km. And if you look at trucks, it's even longer lasting. An 80s Peterbilt clocked over 8000000 km, and even a 60s Kenworth clocked a whopping 17000000 km, destined to live into the 22nd century (with proper maintenance).

    • @FlyingPastilla

If you want to see crazy mileage in decently functionning cars, go to Morocco.
White taxis operate between cities and do pretty long steady routes on the highway.
I once rode in a taxi with 900k+ km and when I asked the driver he told me he's had the car for more than 15 years and the odometer had already stopped working.
Some of these cars have multiple drivers so they run all day, who knows how many kilometers they have seen.

500 000km is completely OK for this generation of MB diesel. Just change oil and oilfilter often. As a matter of fact it is a taxi in Greece with more than 5 000 000km. Also a diesel. But that one is a W123, not a W124.

  • @danielfulop

about the fluid: wind chill is different, so even when I drove at around -5C, my -40C rated fluid would freeze on the window if you spray it right away. It rather means that it won't freeze inside the watertank

    • @coldfire4369

Man, I LOVE this era of Mercedes and this is coming from someone who swears by Lexus. I really feel that in this era of German cars, they were showing off what they can do by bringing out products that were just bullet proof and would last forever. Nowadays, I feel like most car manufacturers show off what they can do by just loading up their car with as much tech as possible, regardless if you actually need it...and by the time the warranty expires it's ripe for the scrapheap

Hope the w124 heater is doing a good job. I own a 1995 Opel Vectra A that had a clogged cooling system. It wouldn't make ANY heat at all. Got it all flushed now but Im 1000% sure at temps like -30 my Opel would be unable to heat up the inside. The outside air would be too cold for it to heat up. Meanwhile the 1999 VW Bora 1.6 from my grandma can heat up really fast and if you put the heater on max it gets like a sauna inside the car. Its incredible how well the heater works in that 1999 VW

I've started my journey into reviving one of these.
I got ahold of a "Junk" 94 E320 Sedan that was essentially abused from what I can tell. It was considered "Junk" because of its transmission, the suspension bushings being heavily worn, and several electrical issues. I think all its issues are from a combination of abuse and lack of maintenance, someone dressed it up like the E500 AMG car and clearly thought they were very cool while they drove it into the ground.
Regardless I picked it up for 3k, with only 180k miles, a stellar interior and decent options, while it still somehow was running and driving despite everything wrong. The transmission made it terrible and unsafe to drive however since the 4 speed auto would eventually just get stuck in 2nd gear after 10 minutes or so of driving.
Right now I'm waiting to get the car back from a transmission specialty shop I took it to for a full rebuild, and after I get it back with a rebuilt transmission, it'll be onto steering and suspension problems, replacing rubber lines all around the brakes and cooling system just because those look sketchy and dry rotted, and then I have to sort out the electrical issues, some cosmetic stuff here and there, a door seal or two, probably the hood liner, and some new tires, then I pretty much have a refreshed E320 for probably in the range of 6k to 8k depending on how expensive the transmission actually ends up being.

2:44 haha, classic. Over here "winter" washer fluid goes to -20C, but we used to have -30C winters, so occasionally you would have this happening and no way around it short of pouring ethanol in the container. A few times my summer fluid froze solid when a cold snap arrived without warning.

As soon as snow falls I jump out the house or bed and drive. It is so rare in northern Germany. Everything I drive sideways, always in a relaxed and smooth way. Snow is just great, I love it. Granted I drive heavy Audis so it's easy, but still. Even in my V10 Touareg I drive sideways, it feels so natural. The RS6 C5 is nice and controllable, but really the A8 D2 is such a suprise. Maybe the weight distribution is better.

Oh I recognize that road! It's the route from Kiruna towards Narvik. I drove there when I went to Nordkapp in September 2024 and want to go again in the winter sometime.
How do old cars handle really low temperatures? Any starting or power steering problems? Do they salt the roads in this sort of cold? I heard salt isn't very effective at these sort of temps. Are studded tires widely used?
