- The American Transportation Research Institute in 2019 published research on marijuana legalization and impaired driving, and how it impacts highway safety. Now, four years later, ATRI has released new research about how marijuana legalization at the state level is impacting the trucking industry.
ATRI’s new report aims to quantify the impact of the legalization of marijuana on the trucking workforce. Joining us this week is ATRI Vice President Jeffrey Short, who talks about the study and its findings, including how legalization has impacted highway safety, the number of drivers disqualified because of marijuana since FMCSA’s Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse took effect in 2020, and carriers’ and drivers’ perceptions of possible future changes to federal marijuana laws and more.

That's the problem. A guy can go home and smoke a couple hits of weed and lose their job a week later from a drug test. Another person can do a bunch of coke on a Friday, and get tested on Monday without testing positive. It's a rigged system.

once there is a system to test on the spot for weed, figure out what is a good limit for the average person like they did with alcohol and don't operate anything over that limit. Smoked a ton of weed and drove 750,000 accident free safe miles, besides the weed in your opinion. We are not all built the same. it is ridiculous you can work hung over as fuck at 0.00 bac and that is legal. I too have smoked many many miles, and drove. I am more than 60 years old. I still am one of the best drivers on the road. In the olden days, old drivers would tell me how much alcohol it would take to get from here to there. It never was a drug to them. ALCOHOL IS A DRUG. Their are signs that state " Dont drive high or you'll get a DWI".. Thats the obvious .. You shouldn't consume anything while operating vehicles or any type of machinery.. but why cant i partake on a friday night after work like everyone else???.. I can drink a gallon of liquor on a friday night go to the hospital Saturday morning.. Get my liver sown up on Sunday.. Marijuana need to be legalized federally. Until then trucking will continue to fail. A lot of ppl are making money on the drivers including SAP Programs which is keeping good drivers from hittin the road.

I love cannabis and I love driving a Truck. But not at same time. Only do it when inget home to relax and be stress free. Do they not realize how stressful it is out there on the road looking out for all the crazy 4wheelers.

They don’t test you alcohol impairment before you drive , and nothing is stopping anybody from doing so, people choose not to , so why test marijuana ? Simply test if you have an accident, you will be tested to see if at that time you were impaired, which can be tested through the blood , so simply test the driver if an accident happens and the blood test will tell you how long ago the driver smoked
A person is either impaired or they are not. Having a different test for each different drug is asinine! An impairment test for marijuana shouldn't look any different than an impairment test for alcohol, opiates or OTC allergy meds. I'll say it again, you're either impaired or you or not impaired, it shouldn't matter why.

Firemen in pa are exempt from having to get a cdl. Which i believe is bullshit. I myself drive for a city public works. And i have a cdl. I also failed a test from not smoking on the job. But had to pay lots of money for sap program. This whole system is messed up. I don’t smoke no more now. Just because i need my job. But go figure now i drink like a fish. But thats ok. I really hope they can change this so i can quit drinking and go back to smoking. Makes me a way better person

One day I’ll be blind, I have glaucoma. I’m allergic to the pills that can help. I have a cdl-A and I do otr. Because of regulations I don’t smoke weed. I’ll be one less driver on the road one day because there is not even a medical exemption. This needs to change. I wanted to grow old as a trucker. But I’m going to have to leave way earlier than I wanted too. There is nothing wrong with smoking a joint after work. Especially, when you have a prescription for it. And can’t use it.

There is no reason to try and make a cannabis impairment test because it's a) impossible, and b) not the issue.
Cannabis is like a spice. It's just spicy in a different way. Everyone has a unique tolerance. Some people can consume huge amounts of cannabis with no noticeable effect.
The underlying issue is simple: Impairment. Regardless of whether it's weed, or booze, or coffee, or prescription pills, or a cell phone, or a dog in your lap, whatever. If you're not focused on the road, you shouldn't be driving.

I'm going to be honest, I have an medical Marijuana card and I've been a daily smoker for over a decade and I've driven 18 wheelers and operated heavy equipment without any problems. I will say that you have to pay attention and not get distracted, I can see how some people would be a danger to themselves or others because it affects some people differently. I know for a fact that some of us can use cannabis and safely operate equipment.
I've been going through the return to study sap program. Getting a driving job with this on your record is a complete joke, almost impossible. I wasted my money and should have just went into a new field that actually appreciates it's workers.
It's not impossible there's plenty of companies that'll higher you im in talks with a local company wanting to hire me as soon as I get my RTD status.

In the United States, cannabis is legal in 38 of 50 states for medical use and 24 states for recreational use. At the federal level, cannabis is classified as a Schedule 3 drug now

This was very concise and should be heard by everyone involved in the industry. We need better statistics, as drivers we deserve an impairment test. As always drive safe and keep the rubber-side down.
It’s not so much if the federal government takes it off of schedule one more so your company has the right to refuse you employment if you’re caught using. That’s the worry. Marijuana can be legal AF in every state of the country but if your company says, sorry you can’t drive if you are a user, then that’s their prerogative and you’re looking for another job.
i live in NYS and it is recreational legal here. i have made decent money in trucking (local milk hauling) and i can easily make 100k+. im going to pay off our 2 credit cards and my car loan, so all i have left is my mortgage and living expenses. if at the point im paying less bills and if the government doesnt STOP making me piss in a cup, i think i will be done with trucking. i do believe change is coming soon, but if it doesnt im not going to stay in this industry forever. i got my CDL in 2016.

I've been smoking for 46 years. I hadn't smoked marijuana for 8 months and still testing positive. I do walk in volunteering testing with lab Corp. Even though it's voluntary, if they find out i have a cdl, it goes on my DAK file. Crazy

funny i have been high as hell since i started driving i just recently quit smoking to be a truck driver. i have never ever ever been in a accident. i have actually drove my way out of other stupid drivers fuck ups while high as a kite. are yall looking for bad drivers to get them high and test their ability to drive while high? i've been doing it for over twenty years. only one time that i ate a hemp bar that i was actually too high to drive and i got the hell off the road. on my own accord. safely may i say. learned my lesson not to eat a eatable while driving after that. but smoking blunts and bowls and joints never had a problem.
I’ve been smoking pot and driving for 20 years and I was in 1 accident when I was 18! Pot affects each person different. 2 years ago I gave up my cdl because I’d rather get high than deal with the fmsca and all their bullshit!

I was shocked to see this video. People first need to learn how to drive all types of vehicles. I sick of fighting for my life on the road for no reason. Also. My brother was over the road trucker in the 90s. One company he drove for ran all drives hard. Today, drivers couldn't handle it. Everyone in that company was on Cocaine. He himself. Never touched it. Yet. My dad, my brother, and I. When we all had our CDL. Driving truck. Running not a log book. 3 log books. None stop driving. Taking a nap here and there. None of us to this day, even. Has touched narcotics.

Every driver should know that driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol is stupid and irresponsible, but if I'm at home on my time off I should be able to pour myself a drink or smoke a fat one if it's legal.

This is such bullshit. “Currently no tests to determine marijuana impairment.” It’s called Saliva test man! Detects THC 1 to 24 hours of use, which also means a driver would have to be responsible as far as when he or she uses it before going on the road.
There has to be a way truck drivers can fight this. The effects of marijuana wear off after a couple hours, and it is not fair and you should be able to sue your company if they fight you.

Impact on drivers and companies? I know once it was finally legalized in my state, I found other work. I don’t like that other work, I’d rather be driving. I’m excellent. High work ethics, I would never drive impaired by anything.

Today there was a recommendation for marijuana to be changed from a schedule, one drug to a schedule three drug. It is up to the DEA to change it now I believe.
