Love the color, Beautiful ride. I personally agree, less is more, but i do hate the black plastic on my STi so im working on putting carbon fiber in those areas.
Came here to find 5 things I should never do with a wrx or sti. :Changing the intake without a tune. Excellent. :Putting lights on the front of your car. Personal preference. :Fully venting bov, bad. Don't do this. :Carbon fiber. Personal preference. :Catless exhaust system. Personal preference. But good advice if you aren't getting tuned. I would have liked to hear your thoughts on why with these 5 specific things to never do. 1.Intake without a tune is bad because the ecu needs to know what the new Maf scaling is because the metered air coming into the engine is being changed. Therefore your fuel needs are also changed. 2.Swapping your blow off valve which recirculates the air that has been measured by the Maf is bad. This means that if you vent the air to hear that sweet swish sound it isn't going to mix with the fuel that the maf asked for causing the engine to run rich momentarily. You can get an aftermarket bov that has recirculation function kept in. Go fast bits offers an adjustable bov that allows you to partially vent and also recirculate. All the way to fully venting. 3.Catless downpipe can cause boost creep because you are increasing the flow of exhaust out of the turbo and allowing the turbine to spin more freely. The stock waste gate and boost controller can have a tough time managing this. But that also applies to high flow cat down pipes as well. So it comes down to personal preference. If you change the stock downpipe at all you should be upgrading the boost control solenoid and getting a tune done. 4.Too many lights on the front of your car. While completely personal preference, it can lead to issues in the charging system. Having too many things drawing a load on the charging system can lead to issues with engine performance. The more voltage drawn away from your fueling and ignition system the more likely you can run into injectors not pulsing correctly and weak spark delivery. This isn't likely with oem lighting, but if you're slapping those giant light bars on adding rally style fog lights, a sub woofer and 3 amps, you can see how this can lead to issues later on. 5. Carbon fiber. Completely personal preference. If you have the money and want to slap carbon fiber everywhere that's up to you. This isn't something you should never do. If it were me adding one more to the list. Never launch your wrx or sti without slipping the clutch. The awd system isn't likely to spin the tires and you're just going to shock the shit out of your drive train. Also roll into boost after 3k rpm. Don't just jam the throttle in low rpm as it puts a lot of load on the engine. Super clean Sti, appreciate the content. 👍
Hmm… I agree with having an access port and tubes ready. But.. doesn’t the stock bov leak with even 3lbs of air pressure? I’ve seen so many people take them off new blow into them manually to show a leak I see a lot of pro racers ride with some of the items you complain about I prefer a lot of suspension and chassis upgrades first then stage 2 to 3 “For me personally” I think your advice is for everyday drivers vs race weekend daily drivers
Love the look of your STI. I agree with everything you said. Mine is a 2017. I’ve had a few minor adds, Invidia Gemini R400 exhaust, which admittedly is a bit loud but too late now. IAG air/oil separator, and the COBB accessport. I was considering changing out the stock turbo for the COBB 20G turbo but I have a lot of questions still. Great video. Thanks. 😊
What’s your opinion on the single exit exhaust on this car? My 2018 sti has the tomei ti titanium single exit with the catted downpipe, I think it looks pretty great and gives a clean sound without being too obnoxious and ricer sounding
Just recently got a 20 STi. Looking into some mods. I’m just wondering who’s the go to tune for these cars and the best for basic mods like intakes and stuff?
I agree with much of what you said. I like more subtle tasteful mods. Different but it looks stock or that is, something Subaru would have done. I see so many mods that really don't do much or even makes the car even slower/worse. (see mighty car mods videos) Cat-back exhaust doesn't do anything if you keep the small stock headers. It's said you need to increase HP by 15-20% in order to feel a difference and be truly faster. That's a 45-60 Hp increase! You will never use it on the street so don't bother unless you do regular track days. Doing any engine/exhaust mods will need to be tuned on a dyno. To make an STI faster takes a crapload of money. The best way to be fast is to sign up for racing school at a local track.
My 19 sti is stock other then the Cobb 3inch catback I want to but the Cobb sf intake from what I have read it will be fine as long as I run the ots map stage 1+93 on my accessport and I want to also put the same bpv as u is this ok?
Thanks I wanted to tripe check because I see all these videos saying as long as it's a Cobb SF intake and u have the Cobb access port it will be fine so a protune just for a Cobb intake I can't use the OTS map on my accessport?
Hi Scooby, been watching many of your tubes and they are very helpful for STI newbie like me. 100% agreement that keeping clean and simple and enjoy the car the way it was designed to have fun. thank you for your good works
My coworker had 2015 STI. First his trans blew now his engine blew. Barely making 300HP. Too much money for blowbru. He did catless downpipe with tune.
I would love to know what modifications he has on the car when this happened. My guess is he went stage 2 (possibly with an intake and catless) and didn't have any supporting fueling mods to accommodate the increased power. To blow a transmission on an STI is pretty uncommon. I would assume this fella launched the car 10 times a day and/or a very inexperienced manual transmission driver. I could be wrong though. There are instances when cars have had issues completely stock. However, that goes along with any performance car.
This is a very clean and simple looking STI- well done! I have a 2020 Type R but I I wish I had looked into an STI before committing to buy so I can feel the difference between how both drives. I don’t like the ugly looking 2022 models. Where can one still find a fairly new previous Generation? Just curious to know in case I want to switch out my current ride. Thanks!
Thank you! Check the used market. Unfortunately, dealers aren’t bringing in many more new ones if any at all. There may be some new ones on the lots though, but it’s slim pickings these days.
I currently have a 2014 gli 6 speed on stage 2 with bolt ons, I’m looking to trade up for a 2015-17 wrx later this year but I want to kinda do the same build with the wrx that I have with my gli now. But based on your video they seem super finicky lol, it would be my daily driver so I need it to be reliable. Cobb has the stage 2 package but would I need anything more than that for reliability concerns? I wouldn’t want to spend more than 4K on mods after purchasing the car and definitely don’t want to blow it up lol
I heard running an OTS map on accessport for AEM CAI works. I'm not looking to do this myself, but just want to hear people's thoughts on this matter. I'm waiting to put a few things on and then getting it dyno tuned in one shot. Has anyone else heard about this? Sounds sketchy
Wether I like your car look or I don't, really doesn't matter. I will respect how you do the look of your subi.. Mine is catless 656whp 2011 wrx with some tough stickers..
At the 1min mark, you talk about needing a tune for a CAI. In general I agree but you go on to say there no way around it…that’s not accurate. I have a 2017 STI with a PERRIN CAI. I’ve had the car for the entire life of the vehicle thus far and had the PERRIN CAI on since like week 2. I’ve never tuned it, it’s my daily/farm car. Runs perfect. Fun fact…PERRIN is the only company that made their intakes to Subaru spec’s and as a result you end up with an intake that doesn’t require a tune. I’ve spoken to PERRIN myself to confirm (4 times, 3 different people). Like I said, in general I agree with the “CAI needs a tune!” sentiment but in this case there is no need.
That is very interesting. I don't want to tune my STI for fear of needing the engine warranty, but this could be the ticket. (Unless the intake has the same warranty drawback)
@@nthgth I wouldn’t know as I’ve not had to take it in for anything since I bought it. Nothing engine related anyhow. I know Subaru can be rough when it comes to that sorta thing but they still gotta prove the intake caused whatever issue you might have. @@dreambigaerialimaging9125 cool. Does it feel any different? Or just a different sound? I'd think that if it doesn't need a tune, it doesn't significantly alter airflow so it shouldn't drive differently, but maybe the sound itself can be felt
@@nthgth no noticeable difference in my opinion but I’ve talked to guys that swear it feels like it has more pep. I disagree. Now when I swapped my exhaust out, I felt like it made a little difference maybe. Perrin stands behind the “no tune needed” for their CAI. I’ve checked and rechecked just to make sure. As far as I can tell, they are literally the only one. I never wanted to tune it but wanted it to sound nice and this was really the only way to go when researching the topic. if you want to run cat-less just be prepared to cough up money for a pro tune. if you have a good tuner you will be fine. but I completely agree with everything else. pretty car

I got a 2016 a few months ago. Whoever the previous owner was spent a lot of money under the hood, including BOV. Been wondering if it’s around that 400hp mark at least on e85 since he also did that upgrade as well

@@Autofreakgarage my plan down the road is to push around 400whp but I didn’t know if I should upgrade like the fueling system or just wait until I really need to do it and just get the intercooler and the stage 2 kit for my block (jpipe, cold air intake etc.) and build up after that

I try to always say it’s my own opinion anytime I’m speaking about a subjective subject. People take whatever people say as the end all be all. As long as you convey is your own opinion, people tend to accept it a bit better. Yes I have 2 kids. My wife has known me since we were 18 and has known my hobby and what I do. Can’t get over how clean your subie looks. I’m interested in picking one up but not sure whether to buy now vs wait for the next gen. but if the next gen sti looks like the leaked images on the web... hard pass.
Your STI is super clean. Are you having rock chip issues or is your paint flawless up close too? My paint is getting wrecked. I’ve added gravel guards but the hood and front bumper are starting to look rough on my 19 STI. Do you have tips/experience with paint correction?
I love that you point out stage 2 NEEDS fueling upgrades cause those (650?) cc injectors are depleted with the quickness and wonder why shit blows up. Good call - I really don’t know why there’s not a lot of resources covering this
The 2015+ STI tolerances are a bit higher than previous gens. My stock injectors are nearly maxed with a stage 1 tune and intake. Just adding a down pipe would completely max them out and would cause serious issues. Fueling is a MUST if you go over stage 1+.
@@Autofreakgarage can I upgrade the injectors and fuel pump and retain the stock fuel lines and fuel rail. I’m basically going to be putting on intake and downpipe, I know I need the fuel but do I need the full thing
What bpv do you have?? I was gonna go bov but dont wanna get a costume tune just yet too expensive for just that. Should i get an intake and a cobb accessport or what would be the best option?
The only mod I’ve got on my Bugeye WRX is a full TBE (catless). I’ve been experiencing boost creep I think? I’m not really sure. Sometimes it pushes up to 20 then will bounce back down to 10, then 15 and back down to 10. Is it recommended to get a tune to fix this or is it sounding more like a boost leak?
You’re not running a tune? You have to have tune on the car if you are not running the stock downpipe. If you are catless and tuneless you are asking for trouble.
Yes you can run a burble tune with stock cats, but wouldn’t recommend running it 24/7. Doing so will end up blowing the cats out. It can also cause premature turbo wear if running all the time. No you do not need fueling upgrades for stage 1.
All I plan to do on my '21 Base is add C-lights, swap incandescents for LEDs, tint windows, MAYBE swap taillights, and maybe swap exhaust. Oh, and rainguards and a rack.
@@Autofreakgarage thanks for the reply man, I'm guessing i should go to a tuner to see if it's tuned for it? Any signs i can tell it's not tuned for that bov
Did it come with an accessport? If so, most likely tuned, but you can run some data logs to send to a tuner to read. You can tell if the car is running rough or cutting if out under wot. There’s a lot of issues that can present themselves when driving. Nothing you can physically see other than the part itself.
Absolutely would. But wouldn’t recommend them for a daily if you live in an environment that sees all types of weather. They could withstand it, but it would be a sad day if they got damaged from inclement weather.

If anyone has suggestions i'd love to hear em, gonna run out this current tank of gas and put in the good stuff to see if it helps. Car is stock
Going CATLESS on the S209, but with all the supporting mods like you said: 1300CC, E85 full kit, TGV Delete, FMIC, and Tommy Kentner Protune.
Good video, good points on not going OD on visual mods. Tasteful is key.
+ ETS V2 headers, EWG, uppipe to manage boost creep
You’re intake does require a new ecu tune. Not all aftermarket intakes require that same tune.
I highly disagree with the lighting topic. I run the OLM Halo fog lights/ with the DRL Bezels plus LED turn signal lights, nothing too crazy. But the car looks definitely more modern. I think the stock look, specially on the front end looks outdated compared to similar cars out there. Either way, I respect your opinion, and your videos are great.
No worries! This is just my version of what I prefer on my own car. I get others have opinions and parts they like. That is the fun of modifying our cars!
Scoobyfreak86 Exactly! That’s why I like this channel so much!
Hey man I got a question would I need a tune for a intercooler?

Thanks for the lengthy and detailed reply!
Hmm… I agree with having an access port and tubes ready.
But.. doesn’t the stock bov leak with even 3lbs of air pressure? I’ve seen so many people take them off new blow into them manually to show a leak
I see a lot of pro racers ride with some of the items you complain about
I prefer a lot of suspension and chassis upgrades first then stage 2 to 3
“For me personally”
I think your advice is for everyday drivers vs race weekend daily drivers
i like how you built your sti. very clean with tasteful mods. nothing excessive
Thanks. 😊
So happy the RS05rrs are here to stay.
Me too!
Depends on what you want but Cobb is always good choice for exhaust, intakes, HKS has good stuff, invidia is good, take your pick
Your thoughts are pretty spot on. Too much carbon, and gaudy lighting, yuck. Catless downpipe, definitely asking for trouble, plus smell Lol !
Do you guys think I should get a old blobeye or a new STI?
Love me a clean blob eye. But I’ll always recommend getting a new STI over a used one.
I think we have the same mindset 😂 keeping it clean and simple 👌🏻
Beautiful interior, looks like a good car for a night drive
The best way to be fast is to sign up for racing school at a local track.
with your logic i am very happy i went with a wrx versus a sti. the fa is a great platform and i hope one day i can get to the point i want to get to.
Do not modify your sti if you aren't going to do it right.
And do not chase every last hp, it will end up being unreliable
Agree. Very wise words!
2018 sti here catless 360 wheel on E and I live in Florida so I hope I don’t run into boost creep it’s been running fine since I’ve pro tuned it
Love the channel, pretty much the same page with you, keep it clean and don’t over do it, great car
My 19 sti is stock other then the Cobb 3inch catback I want to but the Cobb sf intake from what I have read it will be fine as long as I run the ots map stage 1+93 on my accessport and I want to also put the same bpv as u is this ok?
Yea you need a tune with an intake.
Feel like a carbon hood looks great with the right color, if it’s the only thing carbon on the exterior it looks great
Keeping the Carbon Fiber as accent pieces is the way I prefer as well, well said, keeps it tasteful
My mishimoto intake never did that, it did say no tune required soo idk
Where’s is you tail light made from? Reminds me of the fast and the furious Altezza tail light on the early 2000s.
Subispeed
I currently have a 2014 gli 6 speed on stage 2 with bolt ons, I’m looking to trade up for a 2015-17 wrx later this year but I want to kinda do the same build with the wrx that I have with my gli now. But based on your video they seem super finicky lol, it would be my daily driver so I need it to be reliable. Cobb has the stage 2 package but would I need anything more than that for reliability concerns? I wouldn’t want to spend more than 4K on mods after purchasing the car and definitely don’t want to blow it up lol
Thank you, I am a new WRX owner. I greatly appreciate your advice!
What seats are in your car and we’re you able to keep the factory heated seats running ?
ruclips.net/video/yEqC1GCdwbo/видео.html
I heard running an OTS map on accessport for AEM CAI works. I'm not looking to do this myself, but just want to hear people's thoughts on this matter. I'm waiting to put a few things on and then getting it dyno tuned in one shot. Has anyone else heard about this? Sounds sketchy
Yes you can, but I wouldn’t recommend. It’s better to get e-tuned or dyno tuned to get it tailored to your specific car.
Wether I like your car look or I don't, really doesn't matter. I will respect how you do the look of your subi..
Mine is catless 656whp 2011 wrx with some tough stickers..
What is the offset on your wheels? Or what spacer are you running?
+35
Hello sir can I have the wheel setup for this WRX STI it have a nice look😊
As stated though, I’ve literally had zero issues with my engine…runs like a champ and I do indeed drive it like I stole it lol
Sorry for taking so long to respond, notifications are off for some reason.
@@nthgth the sound for sure give the impression that you’re movin faster but realistically your not lol.
I have a 400whp sti full cat less and never have had a problem.
if you want to run cat-less just be prepared to cough up money for a pro tune. if you have a good tuner you will be fine. but I completely agree with everything else. pretty car
Guys, my favorite RUclips right here
🙌🏻
What setting should i leave the c diff on for normal daily driving? Thanks
Auto
I personally use manual all the way back (loosest setting). I feel like auto implies that adjustments are being automatically made from time to time as you drive, causing wear on the parts involved with making the adjustments. (Servos and stuff)
I ran a intake on my 16 sti with no tune for 70k miles and no issues what’s so ever.
I have mine about 3 weeks now and I didn’t think I had to get a tune
Spot on video. When less is beautiful, clean spec STI. Amazing job.
In most states running no catylic converters is illegal
Hey Jersey boy. I am also from New Jersey. I’m in South Jersey. Where did you go to get your tune done ? I have that same exact car in the same exact color.
Your tastes are pretty similar to mine, keep it simple and tasteful, though if i get one of these id probably stick a sports cat in since ill want it running around the 430 hp mark as well as pass emissions with one.
Agree with everything you mentioned. I do almost exactly same with mine. Just catback for slightly different tone and remove tht nasty rasby cold start
sick ride! where did you get the STI intercooler cover? thats a must
It’s from intertek fabrications. However, they don’t make them anymore.
Hey, I had a question. Can I add an exhaust and everything be fine?
Yes, doing just a catback and you’ll be fine.
what about going catless just for the noise? say I go catless and dont tune the hp up too much, would that be reliable?
Definitely don’t do that. You need a tune if you change the downpipe (catted or catless).
@@Autofreakgarage Oh thanks bro 👍 I’m still learning
Where can I get that spoiler on your trunk
What suspension are you running? Sitting so nice.
Fortune auto
1:03 I have AEM intake on my 2015 wrx without a tune. no issues whatsoever and daily driven for 2 years.
Would love to hook an ap up to your car and see the feedback knock you are getting.
@@Autofreakgarage problem is not the intake. it's the whole stock tune 😂😂😂😂 you'll get the feedback either way.
I got a 2016 a few months ago. Whoever the previous owner was spent a lot of money under the hood, including BOV. Been wondering if it’s around that 400hp mark at least on e85 since he also did that upgrade as well
Get the car on a dyno and see what it’s pushing. Just because one car made xxx power doesn’t mean the next car will make the same power with the same mods.
Great video! i really liked your tail lights - whats their name please? i have a new S209 and this video helped me to keep it simple!
Thanks! ruclips.net/video/KMNBGaXgbRs/видео.html
apparently the auto transmission cant be tuned? its apparently to fragile and all im wanting to get an intake and exhaust on mine and i was told that by a tuner
The cvt is very fragile and most tuners won’t touch it.
Man I love the way you keep it simple. Nuff respect.. it is true what you say about a lot of addons.
Modding these cars seems like such a troubled. I’ve never own on it I’m looking into them. It’s seem like every mod you do you could break it. Do example the air intake. I had a genesis and obviously my first mod was the air intake and I never had an issue. Is modifying this car really hard? Need help guys
ruclips.net/video/gfUTD5hmhm0/видео.html
I got a 2014 wrx limited, engine blew up shortly after I got it from the dealership so I went with a IAG Stage 2 block and got it built and tuned what do you think the best next step would be (Currently Looking at Getting the IAG stage 2 kit, and the IAG Front mounted intercooler) or should i upgrade other internals first? I’m pretty new when it comes to Subarus. Just wanted your opinion because I don’t really have anyone else to ask.
When you get an iag block, the internals are already upgraded. It depends on what your goals are.
@@Autofreakgarage my plan down the road is to push around 400whp but I didn’t know if I should upgrade like the fueling system or just wait until I really need to do it and just get the intercooler and the stage 2 kit for my block (jpipe, cold air intake etc.) and build up after that
@@Autofreakgarage I appreciate you responding so fast 💪
Do everything you need to properly do it the first time. Doing it half way will not yield the long term results you’ll want overall.
Agreed! Key words "me personally" "daily driver". For me personally I do have c-light switchbacks, but kept the stock front turn signals as a safety back up in case the switchbacks fail. Couple ques. I see you're married, but don't know if you have kids. Either way how do you go about budgeting & convincing your wife not to hate you for your mod purchases? Also I see you have side skirts & rear spats but no front lip. Personal choice or in between lips? Thx! Fellow Jersey 2015+ GBP Rex driver via the shore.
Oops just saw your end of video link for the Bayson R lip. 😎
It’s nothing new to her so a few boxes of car parts that show up at the door step is something she doesn’t question haha. She enjoys cars as well so she understands my passion.
Yes I was in the middle on converting to the 2018+ front bumper so I stripped my 17 bumper down to stock and sold all the pieces off. Looks like you found my recent video on my kit I’m running.
👍🏻 local. Bennies go home.
Can’t get over how clean your subie looks. I’m interested in picking one up but not sure whether to buy now vs wait for the next gen. but if the next gen sti looks like the leaked images on the web... hard pass.
You might find this video useful. I go over if someone should wait for the new gen or not. ruclips.net/video/qrajb3QDOKg/видео.html
Like your seats. What are you using?
Recaro sportster gt
I got to say lapis blue looks really great! Especially yours! Just a rare color at least where I'm from lol!
Not as common and one of the best things about it!
Looks even better in person, photos and videos don’t do justice
I wanted a lapis blue so bad but a deal popped up on a 2018 black limited I couldn’t pass up.
Your STI is super clean. Are you having rock chip issues or is your paint flawless up close too? My paint is getting wrecked. I’ve added gravel guards but the hood and front bumper are starting to look rough on my 19 STI. Do you have tips/experience with paint correction?
Mine has a few but not many. I don’t do much highway driving so that helps a lot. Take a look at my detailing videos to see how I protect the paint.
Yes, I recommend doing it all.
Hey, does your STI burn any oil? Just wondering! And what miles is the car at currently?
No oil consumption at all. Just hit 31k today.
mine did, get a oas
What bpv do you have?? I was gonna go bov but dont wanna get a costume tune just yet too expensive for just that. Should i get an intake and a cobb accessport or what would be the best option?
In this video I have the turbosmart kompact. You do not need a tune for an aftermarket fully recirculating bpv.
Scoobyfreak86 gotcha, just bought the car last week and the exhaust was the only mod done. I’ll look into getting an AP. Thanks for the feedback!
What about catless cat back and catted down pipe?
For my 2020 sti:
Accessport w protune
Cobb intake kit
Catless dp
Exhaust cutout
BOV
Adjustable short throw
What's your thoughts?
Don’t recommend going catless as I explained in the video. You would need proper fueling upgrades as well.
You will need a fuel pressure regulator, fuel pump, fuel injectors and a ebcs if you want to run safely
As well as rails and lines.
Scoobyfreak86 okay, if I were to run with cats would I be able to burble? And I don't need those fuel upgrades for stage 1 right?
Yes you can run a burble tune with stock cats, but wouldn’t recommend running it 24/7. Doing so will end up blowing the cats out. It can also cause premature turbo wear if running all the time.
No you do not need fueling upgrades for stage 1.
I just subbed
Nice sti and nice channel, mature videos not busting and running like a teen.
Question, What wheels are those sir?
Thank you!
ruclips.net/video/u7tglnKXvl0/видео.html
What's your wheel and suspension setup? I'm very curious. Great looking ride brother.
In this video, Enkei rs05rr and fortune auto coils.
All I plan to do on my '21 Base is add C-lights, swap incandescents for LEDs, tint windows, MAYBE swap taillights, and maybe swap exhaust. Oh, and rainguards and a rack.
Oh, and an F1 light. GOTTA have the F1.
I said the same thing when I first got mine haha.
I actually love how the rims match the paint on mine, so no plans for new wheels; MAYBE a diffuser, but I don't know if I'd really put it to use. 😄
do you have tints on ur window?? If so what percent are u running? i want something that won’t be getting me inna lot of trouble
Yes 30%
Hey man just got my 2018 sti, and it came with a blow off valve unfortunately.... Am i in deep shit?
I’d be fairly concerned. It could be tuned for it, but even so. A pretty much stock ej25 should not have a bov on it. Asking for trouble.
Up pipe with ewg to prevent boost creep.
My subie is the same color! I really like it I wanted her in red but this blue is mint!
Is the Intercooler Guard custom made? I like it....
It’s made by intertek fabrications.
2018+ sti with that black cover is a nono for me I hate how it looks ...
Very good points. Keep up the awesome videos!
Whould you have carbon fibre skirts and lip or do you think it will look crap
Absolutely would. But wouldn’t recommend them for a daily if you live in an environment that sees all types of weather. They could withstand it, but it would be a sad day if they got damaged from inclement weather.
@@Autofreakgarage live in Australia so weather is very hot and dry in summer and winter the lowest it gets is 16 degrees.
I might get them. BTW i have a dark blue (lapis blue) so i think the carbon will look ok...now to find them.
Thanks for the advice i will take it👍
