Thank you for this! I used to see in high school, but lost the time and information I used to have. I bought a sewing machine a few years ago and was so mad at myself for not even remembering have to use it, that I set it in the closet and I just continue to hand fix small things and not even try. After you posted this, I am I going to bust it out now and re start doing things! Reminded everything I had forgot about the basics!

Some lady left everything in this video in the hallway today including a great sewing machine. She left a note saying someone could have it for free. What a blessing. Thank you for this video!
I sew full garments for fun and have been making shit tons of masks and things during the pandemic. Did I still click on this video for true beginners because it's April? ABSOLUTELY. Always learning something new

I know how to use a pattern, but I don’t know how to make one; I feel that I cannot use my creativity to its full extent when I have to follow someone else’s design instead of making my own.

This has been the single most helpful video I’ve watched. Thank you for clear, concise explanations and demonstrations of the basics that are completely new to this 56 year old dude who’s decided to try his hand at sewing. I can join wood, weld metal, solder electronics, and 3D print plastic but when it comes to fabric I’m limited to hem tape so I figured it’s time to add to my skill set. The needle isn't going anywhere but up and down, so if you watch where you are guiding the fabric edge you can sew straighter. @@kelleyamador8838 I'll try that. I think I always had the foot down since the last step was to thread through the needle and it was easier to get the thread through with the foot down.

At the begging of this pandemic I started sewing. Even though I knew a lot of things you’ve mentioned in this video, it was still a huge pleasure to watch!! I’m always open for new things to learn 😋 Thank you very much ❤️❤️
Omg! I thought it was only me. There are so many clothes I'd love to make but it would be too tedious to hand stitch. Its just some kind of irrational fear that i have against the sewing machine
Guys don't worry, I've sewn my finger before(if that is what you are fearing) and yes, it hurts like a bugger but it does heal in time. I just keep on keeping on with my machine. Live and learn and keep your foot off the pedal when you are moving things around with the foot up.
Thank you. My grandma has two old sewing machines that she doesn’t use and I’m hoping to make use of them someday. I also wanna alter my own clothes because not everywhere has my particular style and when they do, it’s expensive 🤧
Just an old man here trying to lean how to do something that keeps cropping up. Excellent vid. Almost not dumb enough for me, but I think I got it now.
Decided to learn how to use a sewing machine so I could help my mother in law make face masks for our community. I'm excited to practice with my new machine gifted to me by a neighbor! Thank you for your videos. they are helping me a lot as a beginner!
I highly recommend clips over pins! That was always the hardest part for me and the clips make it so easy. Plus if you accidentally drop it on the floor it's easier to find. Finding a pin with your foot is not a good time lol
Thank you so much for this video!!! I remember my grandmother fondly sewing clothes for me when I was a little kid. One of my biggest regrets is not asking her to teach me how to sew. She died in 2012 and she was not functional since like 2008. I’ve held onto her sewing machine and I’m just now whipping it out to try to use for the first time, in 2023. Your video really was perfect for me, a total noob. It was so informative and I loved the examples showing what happens when you make a wrong move. I’m also well aware now of what accessories are missing and that I’ll need to go pick up before I really start practicing. Thank you again!
Thank you so much. I never even touched a sewing machine. However, I got into camping and found myself longing for one. I have watched numerous videos, and this is the one I have been searching for. The perfect step by step how to.
Just my two cent tip, if you're going to sew complicated curves like the spiral, change to a darning foot and lower the feed dogs. You can also use this for other freehand sewing like making mending and repairs.
Can you make some tutorials for intermidiate sewers like how to sew darts or how to hem the edge of fabric and what stitch to use to give a t-shirt look? 😄 Love ur vids most or them are really advanced tho
I feel like I moved really quick lol. I got my machine last week and I’m already sewing my own grocery bag, when I got it the first day, my machine use to get jammed a lot but that’s no longer a problem, I feel like I can take it to the next level
Never knew that a sewing machine could be so cool. I have seen my mom use some old sewing machine all my childhood and vaguely remember seeing her do similar things but love how everything is so organized in this machine
Exactly what I needed! Just bought my first sewing machine after always hand stitching my ripped clothes. I was confused about securing the beginning and end of the stitch, but now I know about the backstitching feature. Thanks!
You're such an amazing person! I started watching your videos about 3 years ago and I've seen your growth and how talented you are. You really have inspired me to start sewing! sending love and stay safe!
Someone in a local fb group is giving me a machine with everything I need to get started and i was so exciting to look things up already 😁 great tips thank you!
I am just 2 minutes in, and I can tell you that this was the video I needed. Every other video for "beginners" blasts through 30 steps in under 3 minutes and assumes some level of knowledge and I have literally zero. So, I appreciate you breaking this down for me.
Omg I have tried to sew so many projects on my machine and have always run into issues. This little tutorial helped me figure out where I was going wrong. The camera views and instructions were clear, and I appreciated that the pace wasn't too slow or too fast. A+++++
This couldn't be better timing for this video.. I've been following you for a year and half cause i find all the transformations really cool and intimidating but never owned a sewing machine.. And i just got one for the Easter and it arrived 2 days ago.. So excited!! Thank you for all the tips and work... (i never really write comments but this was too good not to share)
Thank you April! I bought a sewing machine a few months ago and been doing some work on my thrift finds (mostly just taking them in and adding darts because omg nobody makes stuff for us hourglass shapes anymore 🙄) but this video helped me expand my knowledge beyond the stuff I read in the manual ❤️
My jaw remained permanently open through this whole video. Thank you so much for your wisdom and easy to understand instructions. I wish I had seen this before struggling with my machine for several hours 😅
Yaaas! Thank you for making this 💓 lots of us don't have mothers that will teach us this. I've been wanting to learn how to sew for the longest but Idk how to use a sewing machine or the basics of how to sew. Thanks for taking us step by step!! 😊
I have never touched a sewing machine before and with this video and my manual open I threaded the machine so easy! 10/10 would recommend this video to a friend
Thank God you made this video! The last time I used a sewing machine was in Home-Ec a million years ago and I’ve been wanting to pick it back up but I have been so intimidated. This video helped me to re-learn what I was taught and I feel comfortable with getting back into sewing. Thanks!!! ❤️
Everyone has to start somewhere. No one becomes an expert over night. When I took my first welding class, I was the worst one, and was far behind. But by the 4th week I was ahead of everyone else and doing the most advanced welds. Same thing with make up, I was really really bad at it but after a few months of practice I got pretty good. If you REALLY want to be good at it and you keep at it you will get better
I’ve watched so many videos and all of them have been rubbish until this one. This tutorial was so helpful! I recently got a sewing machine but the instructions are too confusing for my tiny brain so this really helped me out. Thank you!
Thank you! Finally know the name for a Seam Ripper. At home mum was always looking for her 'quick unpick' and would constantly rethread the needle for me. Your tutorial bought back lovely memories and thought me a lot! Perfect 👌
Yay my sewing machine is in!!! So excited... watch your videos for 7 days now ... they’re fun and you have a great imagination to redoing clothes easy ... so stoked it’s in 😁
This was seriously EXACTLY how hat I needed. I swear some of these sentences are straight from my grandmother's mouth and I hadn't heard them in over a decade. Thank you for this video.
This is great and so helpful! Can you do a video of the different terms used in sewing. Eg, top stitch, edge stitch, etc. and how to fix problems like bunching fabric, thread bunching, tension, etc?
Nice! I’m familiar with sewing, but just bought a new machine (Bernette 38b). I’m cracking it out this weekend and hoping it won’t be too difficult to transition to an electronic board. Hoping you’d have more of the electronic touches (stitch speed without a presser foot, etc.) featured-maybe next time. Thanks April!
This was incredibly helpful! I have been sewing for about a year and there was still things in this videos that I didn’t know that can make a big difference and make sewing much more easy and fun! Thanks!!
I started following you a long time ago, when I just got into DIY and wanted to learn more about altering clothes. Then I stopped sewing for a while, mostly because I just didn't really have space for my machine, and lack the patience for hand sewing. Now I started again, and was looking to refresh my basic knowledge, so looked up a video for beginners. Didn't really look at what I clicked, just looked at the title, but then after a few minutes I realized it was you! Here you are again, popping up with tips when I need it :) Hope you're doing well, and I'll be looking up some more of your videos to re-educate myself.
When you say you need two right sides together, are you referring to the outside print? And is it because you're going to turn the fabric inside out after you're finished? So that the raw edges are hidden?
Thank you so much. I have only used a sewing machine once in my life in HomeEc back in middle school and forget everything except my teacher's pet peeve. "Don't slam the presser foot!" That's all I remember. The first project I plan to sew uses stretchy fabric. I'm so glad I clicked on your video.
I've always had a knack for fashion and I have so many ideas, I know the basics of fashion design like sketching, fabric choices, structure, etc but I've only ever sewed when I was little with this plastic sewing machine I'm currently 13 years old and almost my entire family sews as a profession or hobby you can say it's in my blood. My mom has helped me with basics like threading my machine since it is an old and used machine and has special "techniques" and processes for threading. This video helped get into more detail and give a thorough explanation so thank you!!! :)))))
I'm curious on how many times you changed your sewing machine since you start sewing and is it because the previous one is broken or you just upgrading to a better version?
I'm not perticular skilled but have had my current machine for 7 years no issue though alot of broken needles🤫. before that I had two cheep/kid. One sewing machines 40$ no bobbin 3 settings fast extra fast, and God help me, or 60$ bucks one speed snail 5 and a bobbin winder sew mechanisms broke a few projects in kept for winder. I got from my aunt getting the bobbin in was hard, the wheel was this exposed band that spun super fast as I sewed she had it 30 years when she go married bottom thread jammednbut that might bey fault
the way you made it look no big deal is actually far way motivating plus you kept it for beginners, i.e no big hints. just simple and necessary tips. can tell you could be ma favorite❤
I’m only halfway through and you’ve already told me everything I needed to know and more. I legit tried this once before RUclips was a thing and I got the machine stopped up LOL. I’m going to try again.
This video was so perfectly informational, definitely deserves a follow and I’ll be coming back to this a lot. Thank you for not being the type to use words and terms we don’t understand without explaining them!!!

I'm getting tired of hand stitching so I'm going to get over my fear of a sewing machine. Hopefully the projects work out okay for me.
Have u gotten it?
@@Stranger_Than_Fiction299 well that gave me a visual i didnt want
@@Stranger_Than_Fiction299 wow. That sound. Scary 😃
Thank you for your videos. they are helping me a lot as a beginner!
me watching this even though i use my grandma’s old soviet machine that was literally made in the 1940’s: 🧐🧐🧐
Nikol Stoyanova sooo true
Sell it for money to buy a new sewing machine
That’s so cool
Omg saaame
@@queenvarmall6221 never sell a vintage machine unless for a ton of money, those things last forever
Bought a sewing machine last week and it literally came in today!! You’ve also inspired me to flip my clothes ☺️
I highly recommend clips over pins! That was always the hardest part for me and the clips make it so easy. Plus if you accidentally drop it on the floor it's easier to find. Finding a pin with your foot is not a good time lol
Oh i might try them my eye sight from what my husband says is terrible 😄
Who else has been sewing for years but still watched this video *just in case* you've been doing something wrong the whole time ?
Me
Always!!! 😂😂
🙋🏽♀️
I usually sew by hand so I’m a little rusty with a machine so this really is a just in case scenario lol
@@adrianna2062 oh shit we have the same name
@@aristojuan7926 why was it jamming? How did you fix it?
Yay beginner guides from the Queen!
I've had my machine for a few years, I'm still learning things (*screams internally* I'm still figuring out tension).
I'm currently making face masks
I know right i would do anything for a computerized machine omg
Bobbin tension is my problem! Ugh I returned my sewing machine because of it.
I'm trying to start making masks
Thank you April! I bought a sewing machine a few months ago and been doing some work on my thrift finds (mostly just taking them in and adding darts because omg nobody makes stuff for us hourglass shapes anymore 🙄) but this video helped me expand my knowledge beyond the stuff I read in the manual ❤️
Thank goodness you are so nice to take out your time to teach people
My jaw remained permanently open through this whole video.
So helpful! Can you make a video with common issues? Like tension/string breaking or why the bobbing thread could get tangled, etc.
I just got my first sewing machine today and this video was so helpful! Thank you so much ☺️
I have never touched a sewing machine before and with this video and my manual open I threaded the machine so easy!
Thanks!!! ❤️
What i've been waiting for my whole life 👩🏻🎤
Edit: Thxs for the likes 😍
I’m so delusional i wanna start a fashion brand and learn to sew and I don’t even know how to put the needle in the machine
you can do it! everyone has to learn from square one, no one starts out a professional in any field!
you can do it! believe in the process! no one starts out as a professional in any field!
+1!😭
Everyone has to start somewhere. No one becomes an expert over night. When I took my first welding class, I was the worst one, and was far behind. But by the 4th week I was ahead of everyone else and doing the most advanced welds. Same thing with make up, I was really really bad at it but after a few months of practice I got pretty good. If you REALLY want to be good at it and you keep at it you will get better
Hey it’s been a month, do you have updates?
I just borrowed sewing machine from my mum, how did you know :o
Literally same
Wtf same
Just borrowed my sister’s!
Haha I just asked my mom for her machine, she said: you don't even know how it works. I said, I'll check a RUclips video lol
Same😂
I’ve watched so many videos and all of them have been rubbish until this one.
So excited... watch your videos for 7 days now ... they’re fun and you have a great imagination to redoing clothes easy ... so stoked it’s in 😁
But I thought the 17 year got shot in the head in Israel 😭
This was so helpful! Thank you! Could you do a beginner sewing series?
if i can’t learn how to sew after this im cooked
😭😭
lol 😂
This was seriously EXACTLY how hat I needed. I swear some of these sentences are straight from my grandmother's mouth and I hadn't heard them in over a decade. Thank you for this video.
It's always nice to find the person who can explain things in a way you can understand. Thank you for your video! 😊
Thanks!!
I just received a sewing machine as a gift and this video just prevented so many headaches for me, hahahaha. thank you so much!
Camellia Ericales exactly! Right sides together. The stitching of the seam should only show on the wrong side
@@coolirpa ahh got it now!! Thank you so much 😊
This is awesome! Thank you so much, April. I'm teaching my daughters to sew and this video is just what I needed. 😊
Hello, how are you doing my friend?
This was perfect timing to upload this as mine got delivered today!
This video was SO helpful. I wish I had've watched it sooner!!! Thank you
Thank you so much. I have only used a sewing machine once in my life in HomeEc back in middle school and forget everything except my teacher's pet peeve. "Don't slam the presser foot!" That's all I remember. The first project I plan to sew uses stretchy fabric. I'm so glad I clicked on your video.
Awww this would've been so helpful years ago when I use to try to imitate your projects
Now I want to go get a sewing machine for real! Love the lessons! 💗🙏🏼💗
Hi, I've been waiting this video for so long, you encouraged me a lot. I really like what you are doing keep it up! - Filipina Subscriber
I’m watching all the ads..girl you deserve your flowers. Thank you for this!! ❤
It s perfect I just planned to start sewing during quarantine
OMG THANK U APRIL!!
This is exactly what I needed :D
yay!!!!
I’ve been sewing for 4 years but still learned a lot of stuff from this video!
the way you made it look no big deal is actually far way motivating plus you kept it for beginners, i.e no big hints. just simple and necessary tips. can tell you could be ma favorite❤
When you’re starting to sew should the needle be positioned right above the fabric, or should you manually poke it though a little?
It doesn't matter unless you need the stitches to start in a specific place but I always poke it through manually first out of habit
@@tigolbitti3s same, my teacher told that its better to do the first stich manually
came here after watching gossip girl and seeing jenny sew her own clothes and made me want to get into fashion
Sameee girl same
I was surprised to find that I actually knew some of these things, even though I consider myself very much a beginner.
SquidFiction me too!
