  • Jay shares his tips for successful online meetings and we look at some useful English phrases you can use to handle the technology.
    For example:
    Can you unmute yourself?
    Can you put yourself on mute?
    Can you adjust your mike?
    Could you speak one at a time please?
    Can everyone see me now?
    I'm pulling up a poll now. It might take a few seconds to load.
    Tell me in the chat if you can see it.
    How can I share my screen?
    I don't know how to stop sharing.
    I think she's frozen.
    I think she's been kicked out/booted out.

    Aghhhh my everyday reality with online classes.
    Anyway, there were some problems you haven't covered, like when the other person's connection iusn't very good and as a result you only hear bits of words or they start sounding like a robot. Do you say "you're breaking up"? Is that the correct expression?
    And something else, doesn't it happen that you're constantly speaking on top of each other due to the delay? Do you call that "overlapping"?
    Thanks a lot for this video. It's super useful :-))

    • @SimpleEnglishVideos
      @SimpleEnglishVideos  2 года назад +1

      Su Tash, yes "You're breaking up" is a good way to describe the circumstance where bits of words disappear due to a users poor internet connection. As for overlapping speech, I think we addressed that in the video, but you are correct, sometimes that occurs because of the delay some users experience. Thanks for writing to us and thanks for watching our video.

    I wonder about 2:50, isn't it an American way of saying "schedule"? Dictionaries usually point out that in the UK it pronouced with "sh" in the beginning and in the US with "sk" in the beginning, although I've never heard the UK "sh" variation (maybe I've only listened to American speakers though)

    • @SimpleEnglishVideos

      You're right Aryan. This is Jay writing back to you. That does happen and when I'm hosting a large meeting I have to scroll through the list of attendees to see who is unmuted and mute them as quickly as possible. In the meantime, sometimes they say the most embarrassing things.

    Sorry that I talk about something completely different! I always said that I need to understand English, but don't have many need to talk and that all I need to be able to say is to tell a tourist the way to the next metro station. But in fact, that isn't true. Two days ago I had a difficult communication with a man who just moved in, and the issue was the "Hausverwaltung" (luckily he already knows this word in German, my dictionary says the English word is "property management"). And I realized that I also talked about that issue with a woman who moved in some time ago and already moved out. In fact, we have some new neighbors from different countries, some of them staying only for a short time, and it would be nice to be able a little more to get to know them and to talk with them about the things that we have in common. I always try, but it's difficult because we don't learn the vocabulary for that at school. Can you help with that?

    • @SimpleEnglishVideos
      @SimpleEnglishVideos  2 года назад +1

      Maiva, one good method a lot of learners use to improve vocabulary is to watch English language movies and television programs with the English captions turned on. If you watch these programs online, you can pause them and study words and phrases and repeat them so you can learn their meaning and learn how to pronounce them. Give it a try and let us know if that helps.

    • @maivaka3863
      @maivaka3863 2 года назад +2

      Thank you very much for your kind answer! I already watch a lot of videos in English and turn the subtitles on, of course in English. I was a little surprised that it had helped so few with being able to speak, because I always understand the videos and already thought it might be good to watch them without subtitles. Well, two reasons why it might not had helped with the neighbours: 1. I didn't focus on new words and watch scenes again. I just thought that it's okay as long as I understand the overall sense of what's being said. 2. The videos aren't about the "Hausverwaltung" (property management) and stuff like this. Perhaps I should look if there's something about gentrification or issues like this in English.
      And a third idea: It looks as if I need to start speaking training... Well, I was very open to the idea that you just need a lot of input, because it's so relaxing and speaking is so stressful. But this big gap between understanding videos and troublesome communication says it doesn't work good enough.
      Well, and I can write about the issues I might wish to discuss with the neighbours.

    • @SimpleEnglishVideos
      @SimpleEnglishVideos  2 года назад +1

      I think you've got a good grasp of the issues and it seems that you're developing a plan to move forward. Good luck and let us know what you decide to do.

    Is it Mike or Mic (as in microphone) may I ask?

    • @SimpleEnglishVideos
      @SimpleEnglishVideos  2 года назад +1

      Today, 'mic' is used more often as a shortened way of saying microphone. But 'mike' was first introduced in 1924 and remained in use until 1961. Later on computers came along with microphone inputs. Labelling them as 'mic' instead of 'mike' saved space.
      But using 'mic' instead of 'mike' presents problems when you attempt to turn in into a verb. "is the zoom user miced up, uh micced up?" The Associated Press wire service agency now uses 'mic' for shorthand for the noun 'microphone' but uses 'mike' as the source of the verb 'miked' or the gerund, 'miking.'
