- Learn about British and American word differences!
We had to pause for the pandemic, but now we can meet up with Super Agent Awesome again so here are another dozen words!
In this video we look at differences like rain boots/wellies and dumpster/skip and say what we'd call them in British and American English.
Some of the other words we explore in this video include rain coat and mac, frosting and icing, shaker and pot, drywall and plasterboard, anchor and rawlplug, dessert and pudding, pop candy and sherbet.

@@SimpleEnglishVideos l really really love this channel as I learned English in England. I’m always on your side Vicky but we also love Jay😉.Thank you for taiping my Japanese name ,that’s amazing!

I think the frosting icing difference is more just an inversion in use between Britain and America. Having lived many years in both countries, I find that Americans will usually refer to frosting on a cake but you could just as easily refer to it as icing without anyone giving it a thought. In the UK it’s the other way round. The same situation as ill and sick, Brits and Americans use both, but Americans more often choose sick and Brits do it the other way round.
Really good information Alex. Thanks so much for contributing to the conversation. And thanks for watching.
Been to the UK some time ago, and I'm struggled which expression I should use with other non-English speakers.
Is that boy your Grandson Vickie?
Yes, Marco. He is our grandson.
Brit here! I would use pudding for a dessert I would have at home after a family dinner for example. "Mum! What's for pudding!?". I would be more likely to use dessert in a more formal location or situation such as a restaurant!
Good point, David. Thanks for adding that to the conversation.
Loved to see a grown SuperAgent! Portuguese imported the English ‘pudding’ and it became ‘pudim’. Milk pudding, OMG!
That's so interesting, Claudio. Thanks for passing that along and thank you for watching our video.

Hi, Jay and Vicky! :-))) Thanks a lot for the previous replies!
I've found some interesting word pairs, that probably should sound the same or very simillar. The left words are pronounced with US accent and the right ones with the UK accent.
US - UK
hot - heart
god - guard
pot - part
bot - Bart
cop - carp
The dicktionaries give the same transcriptions. Do you find any differences in pronunciation for these pairs?
Also thanks a lot for your videos and your work!:))))))
Hi Robert. This is Jay writing back to you. I think you have a good understanding of some of the key pronunciation differences between British and American English. But here are a couple of other videos that might interest you on the same subject: Can vs Can't - ruclips.net/video/rpygq0h4Ql0/видео.html and Ah vs Uh - ruclips.net/video/kkSBXBSOyoc/видео.html
This was Awesome :))

I'm first. Have a good day!
Well done, Nguyễn Khanh.
British English is always known for its beauty and culture. The Grammar plays an important role in the sentence. I m an Indian n we all follow British English but at the same time American English is much more simplified and these days most of the people use American accent too. Thank You so much Mam . Love from India ❤️❤️
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this Sagnik and thank you for watching our video.
"Salt cellar" is an alternative to "pot".
That's correct, Árpád Farkas. Salt Cellar is another British term for what Americans call Salt Shaker, and Brits more commonly call a Salt Pot. However, there is a difference. Salt Cellars generally have only one hole at the top, where a Salt Shaker will have multiple holes at the top. Thanks for the contribution and thanks for watching.
Love this slot!
:-)
Dessert, Sweet, Afters, Pudding.
Thanks for the additions, Terry!
or just "the last course".
@@markbr5898 : But we'd normally talk about "courses" in a restaurant. Not at home.
@@terrydawson1153 Agreed. Unless entertaining and trying to do plan things out.
Thanks soooooooo much!
