- Here's another video in our series with Super Agent Awesome on British and American English word differences.
In this video we look at differences like drapes/curtains and barrette/slide and say what we'd call them in British and American English.
How do Americans pronounce the word gyro? And what about the word mandatory? I was surprised!
Some of the other words we explore in this video include shot/jab, pit/stone, mono/glandular fever.
Many thanks to Fernando Butcher for the image of the learner driver which appears in this video.

This channel is so underrated. You should have millions of subscribers! I was watching some of your videos from 3-4 years ago and they're amazing. It just gets better, really! After all these years that I've been learning English, there are still a ton of differences between AmEn and BrEn, it is endless, I hope Brits understand me when I speak to them haha. Please never stop making videos, you deliver the finest content ever. I always hit the thumbs up button and leave a comment so that you get more and more viewers. Let's spread the world, everybody!
Renata, thank you so much for your kind words and your support. We really appreciate. What's most important is not the millions, but you and all the people like you who can benefit from our videos. Take good care and thanks for watching.
Wow! What a wonderful lesson!💖💖 I really love you because you are so kind and cute . Thanks for everything . Continue to show us more about the difference between both accents....
We certainly will, Ms. Jamila. Focusing on those difference is a lot of fun for us. You may have already seen them, but there are many videos looking British and American differences. You might want to go to our website, www.simpleenglishvideos.com and type 'British American' in the search tool. You'll find more if you then type in 'tricky.' Good luck!
Another amazing video
Good to see Super agent awesome again
I wish to see a video in which Miss Vicki speaks American English and Mr Jay speaks British English can you make that video?
Saad Ali, I'm afraid we'd be laughing so hard at each other the video would never get finished :-) But thanks for the suggestion.
Hi, Vicky and Jay! Is the boy your grandkid?:) he’s grown up since I last saw him
He is our grandson, SiberianMARVEL. And you are quite right. Because of the pandemic, we couldn't bring him into the studio for almost 2 years. And he grew a lot on that period. Thanks for watching.
It's nice to see the Agent back. 👍 His grandparents are very proud, I reckon.
We are indeed, very proud of him, Gabor.
@@SimpleEnglishVideos Sorry for referring to him as "her" originally (now fixed). My bad! My excuse is in my native language we don't have grammatical genders at all. Still it was a rookie mistake!
Hi Gabor. This is Jay writing back to you. It reminds me of when I was studying German and had to learn the gender of nouns - three of them - Der, Das and Die - where there is no gender associated with nouns in English.
@@SimpleEnglishVideos Thanks for the reply! I can sympathise with that problem, too! Learnt some Russian and Spanish as well.
super agent is the best of the best as always !!!!!!!!!
That's so kind of you to say, Pat. Thanks for watching.
You are so sweet God bless you all + greeting to mr.Jay☺️👍🏻
Greetings to you Kdramas. This is Jay writing back to you. We're glad you enjoyed this video. Thanks for watching.
Gyro is more Greek and Kebab is more turkish.
Exactly, FreeEnglishGrammarProject. :-)
A few days ago I spoke with a UK friend about such differences, like trousers-pants, lorry-truck, rubbish-trash, etc... was funny. Now I have a couple of new worlds. Thanks!
You are welcome DiGi. We're glad we could add to your vocabulary. Thanks for watching.
your boy has grown...he's very nice.
Thank you Alejandra. He has grown, indeed.
Thank you, you both are adorable.
That's very kind of you to say, Ronnall. Thanks for watching.
We have a lot of gyros in Hungary, and we call it: Gh-ee-ro-s with a g sound like in Gobblin.
Thanks for sharing that Robert.
I am gonna write down all the words in this whole series!
And can you please make a video about how The Queen speaks and her accent? That would be incredible! And thank you for the videos
Aryan, we'll put it on the list.
In Greek gyro is pronounced “yee-ro”.
The8th Gemmer, this is Jay writing back to you. Super Agent Awesome had to teach me to say 'yee-ro.' I'd always pronounced it as it's spelled in English - gyro as in gyroscope.
Some kinds of barrettes (esp. those that have teeth) are called ‘piranha’ in Brazil.
Oh how appropriate, Claudio. Thanks for sharing that. :-)
In Italy we call the venetian blind Tende Veneziane. That's italian for venetian curtains
Hi Stone Face 222. Tende Veneziane has an almost romantic ring to is as it rolls of the tongue. Thanks for sharing that.
4:29 i just call it hairclips lol
Hi Bulan. I remember when I was growing up, the girls I knew spent a lot of time finding barrettes that matched different clothes, or added spark to their looks. Hair clips would be appropriate but too general since barrettes generally are more artistic and complex than simple clips.
Your lessons are the best in the world. You speak slow and everything is understood.
Thanks for the kind words, Robert.
So incredible how I mix your countries😱
:-)
Clear, the American English language is comprehensible so much queue the British English language!
Numerous American words, as to scribe so read...
For favor, respected English-lingual linguists, it is necessary to obliterate these two words as "than" and "then" because they complicate comprehensions!!!!
It is necessary to alternate them which are similar to the Latin origination.
You can invent these words similar to "QUE" or "QUEUE" [conjunction]; "ENTONCE" or "ENTONQUE [adverb, adjective, conjunction]".
For convenient comprehensions!!!
Can’t really say very much. I really do love your videos and the postings. As I am from Sweden my knowledge of English is rather good. When it comes to British English and American English I have sometimes problems. Here we are so much into English and American
Yes Robert. We're always impressed by the level of English so many Swedes have attained. Thanks for watching our video.
When translating some words into English from Spanish, the translations are the same as British English. 🥰😊 Or when we listen to British English it is easier to assimilate the words being Spanish-speaking. 😊📚✏
AleAventuras B.R , that's really interesting to know. Thanks for writing about it and thanks for watching.
@@SimpleEnglishVideos It is a pleasure. Thank you. 😊
Hi Jay and Vicky, thank you for your work. It’s such beneficial channel. Would you please help me with pronounce regrets and express. I couldn’t pronounce 2 this world together. Thank you and take care
Nice video.. but.. there is something different on him.. he's speaking out differently, I mean, as if he wasnt keen to do it.. his face is off.. and he doesnt look to be nothing happy.
I wish him the best. I hope in the next one, he may be better and happier. Whats his name?
Hi Pedro. We'll continue to call him Super Agent Awesome. And I can assure you he was very pleased to participate in this video, but he is a growing teenager in a complex world. Perhaps that's what you're seeing.
@@SimpleEnglishVideos great!!! What are your insta address? Do you all have it?? How can we speak to Agent Awesome? Whats his insta link address? I am from Brazil, and, most of brazilian schools use your videos to teach us English. All you do is great. Send my best wishes to the boy. Hes under changing. Hes a very funny lad!
@@SimpleEnglishVideos Ahhh.. and.. thanks 4 replying me back.
Omg it's almost like you guys read my mind!!! I was just talking with my students (5 years old ✨) about the differences between American and UK English, and this is so useful, thank you very much!!! Greetings from Peru 🇵🇪
Edit: Still getting used to that gentleman and his voice!! Kids grow up so fast :)
We're really glad it helped with your young students, ReN Ro.
very cool, Thankyou so much
:-)
Thank you so much for your useful English ❤ Love you guys ❤
You are most welcome Min Black Cat. Thanks for watching.
What a very interesting video as always.
We so glad you think so Shafeek. Thanks for watching this one.
I just woke up, and got a notification! what a great video to start the day-! 😁
:-)
This boy is so cute!! : ) I just call it tape, not Scotch tape
Really Canada Dry. Are you in Canada? I hadn''t remembered that from my days working there. (This is Jay writing back to you.)
@@SimpleEnglishVideos French Canada my friend! ; )
C'est bon. :-)
Sellotape, and not cellotape?
Hi Ann. This is Jay writing back to you. I had the same question because one would think Cello made more sense since tape is often made of cellophane. However, the product name is actually 'sellotape.' Take good care and thanks for watching our videos.
English,why u no good😭
I'm afraid i don't understand , European Productions TV. Could you explain?
Thank you so much !!
You are most welcome, Tamie.
Thank you, very interesting! (by the way, we pronounce as "geeros")
This is Jay writing back to you, Micah. I was surprised too. But Yee rohs is the correct pronunciation apparently from Greek.
You can put words below, when you're talking about them. Thanks for the video👍
Thanks for the suggestion, Богдан. And thanks for watching.
Wow 👏🏻❤❤🤗
Angela Merkel should be so luck :-) (This is Jay responding to you.)
A beret - is a type of hat which you put on the top of your head.
Really interesting! Love it!
This super agent is great!
:-)
Wonderful and thank you!
For me "Venetian blind" is associated with a famous bug in Doom 2, when it crashes and leaves periodical bars or stripes on the display.
Well, Алексей Рукин, you've taught something entirely new. Thanks for that and thanks for watching :-)
Amazing as always!!! Gooooood job guys!!!
Thanks Gaetano. We're really glad you liked it.
It is so touching to see Awesome Agent in the video. He gives a nice vibe to the lesson. Hope to see him more!
Hi Roxana. We'll be bringing him. You can be sure of that :-)
@@SimpleEnglishVideos even in arabic we say kebab
A sticky tape.
Sellotape is also a brand.
Thanks for pointing that out R B.
@@SimpleEnglishVideos Just a wild guess but it may have originated from "cellophane tape".
R B, that's a logical assumption. I made that same assumption but was stumped when I learned the spelling was 'sellotape." (Jay writing back to you.)
so smart that boy! God bless him! Super agent awesome is really awesome!!!
That's so kind of you to say, Marco. Thanks for watching.
@@SimpleEnglishVideos not at all,I love watching simple English videos.
I'm glad you mentioned shot/jab. Over the past year the British "jab" has become a popular synonym for an injection in American English due to the coronavirus vaccination. It's one of the rare examples where Americans have adopted and embraced a uniquely British word. I'm glad since I love the word "jab" and have adopted it myself into my everyday vocabulary. 😀
Hi RD M. This is Jay writing back to you. I have noticed the same thing. It's not widespread yet, but definitely gaining ground. Thanks for watching our video.
Great work, thanks (:
Thank you for watching, Zhanybek!
Super Agent 🥰 what an awesome team!
Thank you Simone. We think so too.
🇷🇺 We also use "scotch" in Russia - "скотч" and it has the "o" sound simillar to the British one in this word.
:-)
lovely content
:-)
You are epic❣️
:-)
Hmm, what's the difference between Mandatory vaccination and Forced vaccination, please? In any case i wont recommend to do it for any person on the planet. Thanks, love your lessons!
Oleg, this is Jay writing back to you. That's a really good question. In my mind, a forced vaccination would be one that takes place in a controlled environment like a prison, where inmates have little choice but to obey. When an employers says you can't come back to work unless you are fully vaccinated, that would be mandatory, but I'm sure it would feel forced to some people. Your comment is something we've heard from Russians we know, but it is the opposite of the scientific and medical opinions here. Everyone is encouraged to get vaccinated in the US. Take good care and thanks for writing to us.
what about a kernel?
Silvia, did you "Colonel" which is pronounced 'kernel" in both British and American English? However, the one rank that is spelled the same and pronounced differently is Lieutenant. In American English, it's LOO - TENANT, but in British English it is "LEF - TENANT." Also, we discuss Colonel in this video: ruclips.net/video/Xx9NvsZ1Alg/видео.html
Simple English Videos I wasn't talking about colonel, but about the difference btw stone, pit, and kernel, for example the kernel of a nut, etc
Oh, got it Silvia. This is Jay writing back to you. I'll mention it to Vicki. I hadn't heard kernel used that way, but that may be just me :-) Thanks for clearing that up for me.
I really love when you guys do this! The “mandatory” pronunciation part was very good!
Vinicius, we're so glad you enjoyed this video. Thanks for letting us know and thanks for watching.
You make a nice pair.
Great work!!!!
That's kind of you to say, Dorothy. Thank you and thanks for watching.
