Fascinating history about the "Mad Hatters." I had never heard the story about the hatters being poisoned by mercury. So sad. The other expression "cut to the chase" actually has family ties to me. My father's family is from Oskaloosa, Iowa. I'm related to Chester Conklin, the actor who played the head Keystone cop in every Charlie Chaplin movie. Chester would smack Charlie Chaplin with the billy club. Chester was from Oskaloosa, Iowa, too. It's a small town. 😀

Hi Pussy cat lover. These phrases have very similar meanings. One by one means separately and in order and one at a time means in sperate parts or stage. So a lot of the time we could use either phrase. eg. Learn English irregular very one by one (first one, then the next, and then the next) or we might learn them one at a time. (learn each one separately)

I guess "cut to the chase" is most usefull of the idioms in video xD I like english idioms, they are generally very nice. And there is one english idiom which I like most: "it is not my cup of tea". It was very surprising to realise how polite the "I don't like it" can be in english. We have idiom like this in my language, we say: "it is not mine", but our version is more spoken (informal) and it sounds more passive-aggressive like "stop offering it to me, I am not interested in it". Describing one idiom with another is cute, but certainly can be confusing. This is Jay writing back to you. I did that by mistake with some Chinese aviation students who were watching one of my training programs. They asked me what the narrator meant when he said 'You're not off the hook yet" referring to the steps in an aircraft emergency procedure. I improperly replied "it means you're not out of the woods yet."

In Russian, we have an idiom "на коня" ("on the horse") with the same meaning as "one on the road" I've never thought about how our languages are similar NEED THE SERIES!

“One for the road” in Brazil is “a saideira” (the last one, the one before exiting). There’s also an old tradition consisting in dropping the first sip on the ground (usu. cachaça) “for the saint”.

Hi! haven't seen you for a while, because of my busy schedule. A very interesting topic. Thank you very much. It is funny about the "one for the ride" because we have the an idiom "to drink on the horse" usually used in a short form "on the horse" which has close meaning and comes from the rite to serve the last drink to a departing guest when he is already in a saddle. Sometimes it can be used when the feast is in its most drunk phase 😂 and buddies cannot leave each other either because of deep friendly feelings or because they just can't walk any more 🤣 then we joke that "this was the fifth on the horse". Love from Ukraine and all the best wishes!
Many english idioms are very close to ours. I can't understand why, but it is a fact (maybe we just have no much difference at all :-) ) for example 1. "it is not my cup of tea" (english) and "it is not mine" (russian/ukrainian) 2. "I want to sneeze at it" or "we can sneeze at it" (russian/ukrainian) in meaning "it doesn't matter", and english "There is nothing to sneeze at" in meaning "it does really matter". It seems like one of them was caused by the other one xD Or there is some real connection with sneezing xD 3. "One for the road" as you already mentioned 4. "Hang in there" (english) and "Hold on there" (russian/ukrainian) 5. "Let the cat out of the bag" (english) in meaning "to show some hidden fact", and "to buy a cat in the bag" (russian/ukrainian) in meaning "to not know some facts, to accept something you don't understand" and so on...
