In Italy we also have two different ways to use the "kettle of fish" expression like British English does!
We have *"Una bella gatta da pelare"* , so "A nice cat to peel" and it works like "A nice kettle of fish"!
Then we have *"Un altro paio di maniche"* that is "A different pair of sleeves" that works like "A different kettle of fish"
Your videos are so interesting, love from Italy :D

How cool food idioms are! I'm happy, I was able to spot all the idioms and knew the meaning of 7 of them. And I'm a sweet tooth! What a coincidence, I've finished making a lemon cake, about 20 minutes ago. It is made of crust, lemon curd and chocolate. And just because of that I thought "why do they use lemon as something bad in that idiom, if it can be delicious :D" But of course I understand what was the reason of creating of that idiom. And about hot cakes, I know, a lot of foods are better when still hot, but I prefer cold cakes and hot pies. Thank you for the video! That's a great beginning of my weekend! I hope yours will be wonderful as well!

Great video! Just asking if you could make a video for A2 lever words to C1 level words, so we can use more advanced words of english? For example the A2 level is “I’m afraid of spiders” and the advanced level is “I’m scared of spiders” or something like that. I want to see that kind of video because when there is a speaking part test, I can talk more advanced!

    • @baharehgolpour5674

You could check out Cambridge or Oxford dictionary websites . In some cases , Cambridge tells you the level of a word. For example while the ' beautiful' is at the level of A1 , the word ' exquisite' is the kind of vocabulary that students at the C2 level should know

There's also this phrase ' earn peanuts', which means making little money.
    Earning megabucks is the opposite.
So if you earn peanuts ,you make little money. If you earn megabucks , you make a lot of money.

Hi Natalya. Great question! Yeas, it's an idiom. Something that takes the cake it's the most remarkable of its kind, usually the silliest example, so we often use it when we're surprised and annoyed. For example, you charged me for the soup you spilled on me? That takes the cake!

The meaning of 'The best since sliced bread ' is fairly obvious , and it's easy to guess. The idiom has the word ' best ' in it and 'Best' is the superlative of Good , so you can definitely speculate what the idiom stands for with the help of the clue , which is the word ' Best'.

Yes, we talk about plants bearing fruit but bear can also have a more metaphorical meaning so, this example of experiments bearing fruit would mean that the experiments have produced or brought about good results. There are a lot of similar meaning idioms in russian. Something like "easier than a steamed turnip", "selling like hot Pirozhki"
And why do we use "selling" not "sells"?

    • @SimpleEnglishVideos
      @SimpleEnglishVideos  3 года назад +1

Hi just a student. I love your _easier than a steamed turnip_ example. That's fun! I think _selling_ might be a gerund in 'selling like hotcakes' - so a noun made out of a verb, and that's why it's selling rather than sells. The reason I'm hesitating is the rules about what's a participle and what's a gerund can be complex and grammarians sometimes disagree. Other readers may have other thoughts. Let's see.

Hi Inna. Oh I hear you! The quantity of vocabulary is generally the biggest challenge everyone faces as their English gets better. And we, as native speakers, find we're constantly learning new words too. On the bright side, there is more tech to help these days. Typing OALD or LDOCE into Google takes us to some great free online dictionaries. There are free apps like Memrise and Anki that can help us remember. And there are accessible free corpus tools like SkELL Sketch Engine where we can see words in context. It's just as well though because there are so many words!

This is so helpful, and fun. I think I have a food idiom. If someone says, "I'm in a pickle," or "that's a bit of a pickle," I think it means a difficult or complex situation. Your videos always make me smile. Thanks!

Hi, I see @DorothyFratoni has just given an excellent reply! WE can use it in the positive as well. If we get around a problem we solve it, or avoid a difficulty that it's causing.
