John Starks Talks Knicks-Bulls Rivalry, Michael Jordan, and The Last Dance | MSG 150
John Starks proves what true sportsmanship looks like. Respect!
I didn't like Starks as a Bulls fan back in the 90's, but that changed through out the years I have nothing but respect for him he never back down even if you were NBA icon, Starks was a scrapper he had to fight for everything he got, he went from bagging groceries to the NBA guarding the greatest athlete in Michael Jordan and he never backed down or was in aw of him. Michael Jordan respected that, imagine if the Bulls had Starks along side Rodman.
@Ulysses432 Ehh ... that 'snapping' you're referring to was more media driven than anything. Starks was ALWAYS a good dude and an even GREATER competitor.
And I'll always believe that if the moment wasn't too big for him in that Game Seven of the '94 Finals vs Houston, he'd be immortalized in NY.
@Ulysses432 Too bad there isn't an eye-roll emjoi on this thing ...
This isn't politics I'm talking about so chill with your 'ignorant' talk. Sports media DO spin things (just like regular media) and YOU'RE saying that he was 'prone to snapping' which is what everybody wanted to label on the guy. The Reggie Miller incident was as dumb as he got ... and that's about it, is all I was saying.
The point I was making is that Starks always WAS a good dude and a great competitor. Period.
True sportsmanship 0 rings
Bro he just changed my way of thinking about him, no doubt about it if I see him I ask him for a pic 4sure.
John Starks - from bagging groceries to starting PG for the NY Knicks. Much respect.
Totally.
Yes ..Safeway..in our hometown Tulsa,ok....
the two best to ever go from grocery store workers to fan favorite pro athletes, John Starks and Kurt Warner, thats the ultimate rags to riches come up!
Not only that but a 94 all star & faced off against the goat in the later rounds of the playoffs. Talk about underpaid he made 120,000 in 91 & 93 while scrubs made much more.
Natalie Panaro Stack - Smush Parker made just under $2M in his two years with the Kobe-centric Lakers.
Don’t care what nobody say John Starks still one of my favorite Knicks
Tough guy and didn’t back down from MJ.
Starks,Ewing & Oakley 💪🏽💪🏽
Starks an mulberry
I’m a Bulls fan and Starks is my favorite Knick. I was heart broken when he missed that 3 in game 6 in the Finals, and then went on to lose game 7. He was cold in the Finals, but Riley stuck with him. He was a tough basketball player and is a very humble person. Respect.
The best era
John Starks - respect sir. you made MJ work on offense AND defense.
The thing I loved about John Starks was his heart.
That's why his last name is starks. Ironman
The Dunk over Michael and Grant as a Knick fan i will always remember that dunk. Thanks for that memory John Starks
You see why New York loves John Starks. He never got the respect from media because he didn't have the college background of the big names, but he played hard every time he went on the court.
Very true. Why do you think when the great centers are mentioned Moses is the man often omitted?
Fukc the media John Starks was the STAR🌟 of the NYK🏀
As Bulls fan I got a lot of respect for John Starks !✊🏽
Same here.
Grew up watching John Starks and love the man. He had toughest job in NBA against the bulls.
Starks was really good back in the days, I hated the Knicks so I hated him by proxy but I always respected him as a player. And he seems like a good person.
Same here. As much as I hated the Knicks in that rivalry, I less respected Starks play. He was a great defender. How bout that dunk over Jordan n Grant
Fabian Parra Dunk over Jordan? 😂😂😂 You need glasses...
Damir Hadzic Jordan reached. If you reach your part of the play. Go on Google and see before and after the ball goes in images and you’ll see Starks and Jordan almost clap hands.
@@gsxawd981 Damir obviously needs the glasses. Horace Grant was also in it.
Word you had to respect starks for how he played
MJ drop 60 points on Pippen after being off a year! Don't wanna hear Anybody in any era can stop Jordan ever again! 💯
On pippen?
At 5:00 minute mark. Darrell H. is talking about a charity game that Pippen hosted.
@@JuanVega-ns5ok and everyday in practice for 7-8 years. Pippen could never gaurd Mike. My point is if you can abuse one of the best defensive players ever, then nobody could stop him
@@darrellhardy90 Pip could guard jordan. Not shut him down every game. Gary payton shut him down before
Darrell Hardy that was a charity game. It's for scoring
John Starks to me will always be in the category with Ewing, Frazier, Monroe, Reed , King and alot others as Great New York Knicks players 💯
As a teen from The Bronx in his early 90s I can say John Starks was a real dog. I love this guy.
Michael Jordan faced 7 of the top 10 all time scorers. 9 of the top 10 all time block leaders. 7 of the top 10 all time assist leaders. 8 of the top 10 all times steal leaders. Faced a much tougher era of defense with hand cheking allowed & harder fouls etc. MJ is still considered the 🐐 by most people 2 decades after his retirement, that says it all...
Facts.
Factoids. Preach
Stop it he never faced them on the same team
He never beat magic Worthy Kareem Lakers
Never beat Bird McHale Parish Celtics
Never beat Dr. J Moses Malone Sixers
.its not a rivalry if you loose everytime
Jordan got Pippin top HOFr Rodman HOFR
Knicks had Ewing and average players
Starks was a shooting guard who couldn't shoot
Oakley frequently missed layups by himself no offense at all
Charles Smith old Derek Harper
Lies he was always guarded by players not his height .... 6’1, 6’2 etc
@@andyreynoso4454 LeBron plays the point guard name a point guard that guards him at his height? Outside of KD nobody that plays its position is his height or has his stature..STFU if you don't know what you're talkin about.
Knicks vs bulls playoff series was one of the most intense n fierce gamesl in the history of the NBA.
Bulls Knicks series was a cake walk for the Bills because nothing the Knicks could do to MJ and Scottie that they didn't see from Detriots Bad Boys
Yes it waa. I'm from ChicAgo and that Was a great Game. Not like todays trash.
Pacers gave Bulls their biggest challenge.
yes. i explain why this defined our era of the 90s. this type of basketball. "D-Up!" is free on Apple. last two episodes have been bulls and Mj
@Melo Bryant that makes no sense. it was just a jersey. team sucked. and NOBODY was left in the coaching staff or players. just a jersey and a contract dude.
I can't believe John Starks has somehow made me almost like him all these years later, ugh. Always hated his guts as a Bulls fan, but Starks seems pretty chill and humble when speaking about his battles with MJ & Reggie Miller.
Same here. I actually respect him now. Back in the day. I hated him so much. He was so dirty and at the same time, he was soooo good!!! It killed me.
He's so small compared to the rest of the guys but damn that boy can jump. He's quick to reach and steal the ball.... And man, do you remember when he starts shooting threes when the Bulls would double Ewing down low. Oh boy!!! I can't...I can't.... I'm having flashbacks right now.
Oh no! I've opened up an old can of worms. Here we go again...jk...
The Knicks were great man. Starks played tough and hard, but the league was hard and rough back then as well. The Knicks played great basketball with heart!!! Full of emotions and they went full on with it.
But, Michael Jordan knew how to lead his emotions. Therefore directed his emotions and teammates towards the right goal. That's why...... History is the way it is.
ps. Starks is a "great player" regardless. From the way he looks in this video. He looks like he could still drop 20 plus points tonight.
Yep same here
Starks was like a east coast Vernon Maxwell both were streaky shooters physical &gritty defenders with very competitive attitudes and dynamic in the opencourt but Starks was more athletic .
@@abrahambemar9530 starks would have still been a better version of JR.Smith if he played in this era
The thing I loved about John Starks is that he wore his emotions on his sleeve.
John Starks is by far my favorite Knick of all time. He never backed away from any challenge
Starks represented New York to the fullest from bagging groceries to guarding MJ. MJ respected him so much even had him in his hall of fame speech. Big ups THE DUNK
Mj literally played grocery store clerks😂😂 😂No way can he be the🐐
You mean the dunk on GrAnt🤨
@@camdenboy5846 i swear people just make up things to fit in their reality. How is it a dunk on MJ when mj wasn't even at the front, smh
@@roahnosh I no I don't no y you telling me that.i said same thing
ALL I said was Jordan was around he DUNkd on GrAnt 🤨 wtf was u reading
John Starks was a good player! An awesome defender and truthful about his years competing with Jordan and the Bulls.
There are no end to these Michael Jordan stories. Everybody has a Michael Jordan story, but I guess we shouldn't expect anything less from the greatest of all time.
It's nice to listen this with tear in eye. ;)
Can't be the greatest if you were playing against grocery store clerks
@@scoringmachine4694 He played against any and everybody, he didn't care, that's part of why he's "The Goat". Michael Air Jordan!
@@wv8071 but how did he play everyone if all his finals opponents were not that good
@@scoringmachine4694 He played whoever was in front of him. Anybody that says the teams Jordan faced weren't tough is just ignorant about basketball. There was more top talent throughout the league then than now.
John Starks was one who didn't back down from Jordan- he played him tough. I disliked him at the time of course being from the Knicks but had a lot of respect for his game! Great player!
JS is such a class act. Mad respect ✊🏾
I love the 90s basketball. The competitiveness and drama on the court.
Aka National Plumbers Association
I sure miss the league of that time as well. League full of superstars
those qualities are nowhere to be found in the current nba
So many good teams and squads unlike today. NBA is garbage today. No competition. A handful of teams or less that could win the championship every year.
I realize from watching the Last Dance, there was actually so much drama. The rivalries, friendships and players who genuinely disliked each other. Nowadays everyone is friends, like Isaiah said in the documentary. It takes out all the drama and it's boring to watch.
Much respect to Starks... he always held his own and played hard!!
This just made me miss the good old 90's nba. John Starks is one of the few players who posterized Horace with MJ on that spectacular dunk. An honest to goodness dude. Respect!
@Ulysses432 yeah i got that mixed lol
@Ulysses432 He 100% dunked on Jordan as well. I have the poster. Horace and Jordan.
@Ulysses432 So if Jordan's raised hand had blocked the shot he wouldn't get credit for the block because Horace Grant was in front of him??? GTFO! Your boy got posterized. Get over it. Everyone gets dunked on. Guys who play defense well get dunked on the most.
Love Starks; from a MJ, 90s Bulls fan. Gotta love a player who played hard and gave his all.
yesssssssss
Much respect John Starks!
Knicks Bulls playoff games were so🔥epic I walked out on many jobs in my early 20's to see them. Nothing was getting in my way!
Wow, first time I ever heard John speak. Being a Bulls fan, I couldn't stand him back in the day. I'm wrong, and have been all these years,....... a real class guy. I'm so glad to have learned this. Its never too late to open ones eyes.
John Starks was truly underrated. He was such a crucial part of the 90's Knicks. I'm a Jordan fan but I miss the 90's Kicks. They were fun to watch
Starks was intense .
If Starks only hit 1 open jump shot against Houston Knicks would be champs
@@big-l5771 He was the reason they stayed in Game 6. He brought them back in the 4th quarter!
@Krazie Genius I wish he got that last bucket in game 6, game over! NYC Knicks NBA once again. Haha.. I'm still working on my time machine, haven't given up yet. Lol
John Starks was the man! Amazing back and forth battles between him and Jordan back in the day! Respect!
full respect to Starks!! i loved watching him and the Knicks vs the Bulls back in the day! Love hearing what he had to say about MJ and his respect for him 😊👍
I thought John Stark was arrogant when he was still playing specially against MJ. I am wrong, he appears to be a nice guy this interview. And he still looks young.
He was passionate
Players are different on the court than they are in everyday practical life. On the court, it's a war and you can't be soft or you will get ate up like Lebron in the Finals.
I had the same perception.
If you like the bulls and that era check out my free show on Apple "D-Up!"
my man, john starks jersey is all i'm wearing when playing 'hood ball
Starks, oakley, mason, ewing, johnson! Damn dat was a good team!
not to mentioned Childs and charlie ward... 6th man awardees with incoming sprewell and houston
Dam good team.
This is good interview. Good to hear from John Starks.
Starks was my favorite player by far growing up a Knick fan watching him was so enthusiasm he brought so many people excitement and happiness from his spirit I Love John Starks God Bless him continually for his work here
As a Bulls fan from the 80's and 90's I got mad love and respect for Starks
The type of guy you'd love to have on your team.
My respect to John Starks
Man listening to John brings back all the childhood memories of the BEST ever decade of basketball. So glad I was able to experience watching those games live!
Starks always made me laugh back in the day because he had such a temper lol. Didn't take much to set him off
Game 4 ECF was likely MJs greatest game mainly because of how hard John Starks played him. He made MJ work for everything he got.
I still wear my starks Jersey miss watching him play as a kid.Thank you for that Mr.Starks
Please do more interviews with John Starks. He speaks well and tell good stories.
Dude had energy like crazy .played hard and with determination. I actually liked his game
Thank you for giving Mr Starks his flowers now with this interview. My Favorite player Growing up no one could tell me he wasnt the best player. And he will forever be a legend. And has the most iconic dunk in nba history much respect and love. The orginal #3 Second favorite would be Iverson✌Ultra
My favorite Knick player of all time.
Super facts !
Anyone who’s from Chicago and was raised in the 80s and 90s knows the hate we had for Starks lol .... now I miss those damn 90s knicks and those battles we had with them. Good times New York
Starks is the definition of New York basketball. He never backed down and he went at the best of the best in the 90s. Used to hate him cause of him missing those free throws. Lol but i respect him glad he was a knick
Jonh Starks Huge Respect to you and Thank you for does Amazing games and memories!
Those Bulls vs Knicks match ups, greater than any netflix series!
People forget starks locked people down .. but he couldn’t stop mj
No shame in that though, no one could shut MJ down! Starks was a damn good player though, i loved watching him and MJ going at it...
Only because he was too small...
@@RAPSNINO MJ could be faster than the big men and stronger than the small men. He beat you in every way. Starks had no chance.
@@mav1877 He did dunk on him! Nice play for a little man.
Nobody stopped MJ
Every time I throw a paper in a basket, to this day I still say....."Starks.....for 3.....YES!!!!!!
@Great Guy
Lol....yes....!!!!!
I was going to add that to my post....but those who know.....know.
Maybe it's because he was the MSG play-by-play announcer for all those years..but Marv seemed to say "John Starks" more often than just his last name on t.v.
kayzehn enas he did that with a lot of players but it might have been more with John Starks. To me I think it’s because Starks was full of heart and energy and everyone fed off of it. Even when saying his name after he hits a 3. It always seemed extra special when HE did it. I remember it was one announcer, maybe Trautwig who even admitted that. It’s even a fun name to say lol.
@@kramermile114 IMO, you're 100% right about everything you have said. Plus, his first and last name does have an extra "spark" saying it..especially Madison Square Garden's PA announcer in the 90's, Mike Walczewski.
@@Dangic23 Starks for 3? That didn't happen to be that playoff game where he missed so many 3's that he actually cost the Knicks the game...is it?🤔
😅🤣😂
Hated this guy when I was growing up, but it's obvious that he's a class act. Excellent discussion. He was a great competitor, and made you work for everything you got. He clearly has a lot of respect for MJ.
I may get some hate for this, but I'd rather watch John than one dimensional scorers like Melo, Nique and Iverson. Any day of the week.
MJ respected Starks, and wouldve killed it as team mates if they had the chance
Shoutout to JOHN STARKS man he’s one & the few dude’s that played in that era that’s not all emotional like ISIAH THOMAS, CRIAG HODGES, HORACE GRANT, CHARLES BARKLEY, Etc....STARKS was a baller he went at MJ relentlessly....These new fans look at STARKS & look down on him but STARKS was a baller I respected his game...
back then players played with heart n loyalty. meaning whatever team im on this my family and im do whatever it takes for us to win.
I’m from Chicago, grew up watching the Bulls and was able to experience the Bulls winning championships during my college years. We hated the Knicks and especially Starks. But honestly would have loved to have had him on the Bulls. He worked harder than anyone and was a bas a**. You only hated him cause he was such a fighter and not on our side. All this last dance coverage brings back such great memories. In fact the more i think about it, that 90’s Knick’s squad could probably beat our Bears if they put some pads on.
Technically, we had him for 4 games in 2000...
Me as well buddy. When you were watching him you realized you were watching something you may only see once in a lifetime. Something generationally special. Turns out we saw the best player ever.
So agree with Starks, Michael being misunderstood for his pure mental resilience to win at all costs. So much respect for MJ as a person and how unapologetic he is for who he is. Like he says if you don't like what I do then maybe I'm not the person you should be following. GLOBAL ICON!
Dear John, you were one of my favorite players when I was a teenager and you were doing your thing! It was an unbelievable feeling watching you competing against MJ and Reggie Miller! Them were the good ole days!
Respect to this guy John Starks! He's good player, fighter and fought alot of battles againts Jordan and the bulls. He never back down againts MJ and the goat respected him for that.
John always played good defense when it came to Jordan and his love for the Knicks and when he kissed that Knick logo at the garden that’s why he’s my favorite Knick.
John Starks was a bulldog as a player and a gentleman as an opponent. I loved his heart and competitive fire. Starks is someone you loved to hate. But as a Knicks fan Mason, Starks and Anthony are forever in my heart
I love John Starks. My mom is from New York and my dad is from the south side of Chicago. I was born 6 miles outside Chicago and I’m a Bulls fan all the way. But my mom’s favorite player was by far John Starks. And Starks was fearless, never backed down from MJ. I loved that no matter who won a particular game or how emotional it was, Jordan and Starks always greeted each other and shook hands. Starks was a great player with an unbelievable passion for the game and a class act. Much respect to Mr Starks.
MJ respected a few players. Starks is one of them.
John Starks doesn't even looked like he's aged since the 1990s...lol
Starks had his moments against Jordan, he actually played him really well at times. The refs actually wouldn’t let anyone play Jordan too close
Jordan would throw bows across they face and everything then get fouled and cause a scene
@@Doloblack just like lebron but we got to understand thats business to protect the league franchise players. that they got to protect them and make them look great to help make the league more money n expand
@@jacqverdin1488 that's true. I kind of wish would be able lead league in free throws that way he goes to the paint but his bad free throw percentage bad
Dolo Black....., As great as Jordan was he was equally as great at whining when he lost

The Knicks/Bulls series’ were were 100% pure competition... maybe even best series’ all-time
John Starks you a champion in my book bro even tho you didn't win the Chip That KNick Team was the Best
As a HUGE Bulls fan. I always loved the way John played. He gave MJ some in 92 and 93 as a starter.
One note * Scottie had a monster series in 93. That was the Knicks year to get to the finals.
Hey, I like John Starks as a player.I even tried to imitate how he shoots 3's.Those Bulls vs Knicks playoffs series through the years were already the NBA Finals during that time,Ah the 90's!The Good Ol'Days!!
John Starks and Joe Dumars, Mitch Richmond. The 3 best to guard Michael Jordan RIP Bobby Phil’s. All great sportsman and tough as nails
Respect to John Starks!
I miss those 90s Knick teams. They made whole seasons feel like the the playoffs to me.
I’m fan of Bulls, but I really love when John Stack play against because the competitive player that always was and the show and bravery trying to stop Jordan! Long live and good health, thanks for memorable player!
The best decade ever the
I think it was a compliment for the knicks when in the interview MJ mentioned why he was so tough on his team mates and he got emotional at that point, that when you play at The Garden it is a war !!
I loved the charity game story !!!! damn. we find something out all the time. crazy.! i know everything about mj AND THAT TIME AND GAME. i didnt know that!! 55!? wow

John Starks represents the very best of humanity. He played harder and with more passion than anyone. Excellent player. Always a joy to watch. So entertaining. Never with his mouth. Always with his basketball prowess. Sportsmanship at its best. Thanks for the wonderful basketball memories John.
Very graceful and kind. What a wonderful man he has become. Just wonderful to see.
I remember a time when players had so much heart. John Starks was not near MJ's skill level, but he laid it all out on the court every night, and defended MJ like a champ.
John Starks and those Knicks were my favorites. Those are my guys. I loved how they played with heart every night.
Mad love for John Starks was my favorite Knick’s player.
I grew up in Chicago during the Jordan glory days and I use to wear a Starks jersey because how tough he was....
Man, it was GREAT for a bulls fan to hear John Starks talk about the past. I really hated that dude back then. BUT HE DEFINITELY BROUGHT OUT THE BEST IN MY BOYS. JOHN PLAYED HARD. HE'LL ALWAYS BE SPECIAL IN MY EYES. DAMN GOOD JOB MR.STARKS!!!!👍
Such a good guy. No bitterness or smallness like so many out there. Just tells it like he saw it.
JOHN STARKS classy interview and comments, SALUTE.
John Starks , you earned RESPECT playing all those games against MJ. Just saying, as a Bulls fan. You gave it all on the court, much respect!
Reggie Miller and Starks were the 2 guys that ever had me worried in the East. Reggie a little more then Starks. I was really worried about that game 7 against Indiana with Bird coaching he made that team a lot better. I would have loved to have seen Michael and Hakeem play in the finals

John Starks is a cool guy....i used to hate him when he played against the Bulls....i can def respect him now in retrospect....i rarely (if ever) heard his thought process....def a man of integrity....

Man I hated John Starks in the early 90s. Wasnt personal. Now Im older and I love him. His games vs MJ were awesome. I miss the Bulls vs Knicks rivalry. Especially the xmas games and the playoffs. I even have a Starks jersey now 😎👍🏻
When Starks went to the bench, he was still a very important part of the Knick's success. Starks was able to handle the pressure that Allan Houston could not. Starks often came through when it mostly counted. This particular Knicks team was probably going to win it all that year.....but then they got into that fight against the Heat in the playoffs......and then everything changed.
Even his toughest opponents regard him as the GOAT, so please the debate? end it.
Real talk!
Man John starks really brings on black don’t crack. He looks great 👍🏽. I love watching John Starks it was nice to see him play.
