Don't blame Krause for everything, Jerry Reinsdorf is the owner and had final say. Krause was just doing Reinsdorf's dirty work for him, Reinsdorf just didn't want to spend the money!
Phil was not coming back to coach a rebuilding team with Jordan retiring, Scottie traded, and Rodman released. Who is kidding who? Phil would have walked away. He didn't want to ruin his legacy coaching a bunch of bums in a rebuild.
I think he wanted to get that first championship at any cost... and then after the 4 and 5, he felt slighted by credit not coming his way in the way he thought it should so he wanted Phil out so that he could do it with "his guys"... although Phil initially WAS his guy- Tex Winter trained him, he replaced a players' coach for Phil and it worked in the end. I think of the people who deserve blame for it ending, he is number 1. I thought Reinsdorf would've welcomed Phil/Pip/MJ back with open arms; however, going public early on that Phil wasn't coming back made Jerry 100% the bad guy... and (whether or not it was a misquote) Krause's quote on "Players and coaches don't win championships; organizations win championships."
To me Michael Jordan was infinitely great. I was 9 when he was drafted and I had Chicago sports channel on a satellite dish so I saw every single game for years. Seeing his entire career was something I look back and feel lucky about but at the time at a young age I knew what I was seeing. I knew he was the greatest player of all time before I understood how great others were because seeing him play I knew nobody could be better and still be human. I was shocked when they lost to Detroit but I always knew they would beat them next year because Jordan got better every year no matter how impossible that seemed. Very few people outside of Chicago were lucky enough to see as much of his career as I was.
Great perspective from Will Purdue who is quite philosophical. He is right that the first impression is the last impression in the case of MJ for the pistons fans in the 80/90s. It took many years for me to undo my bias against MJ, perhaps not entirely until this point.

I just schooled myself, so to speak. For years I've thought Will Perdue didn't belong in the NBA. And today I proved myself wrong. There's a well known video known as "The Scallenge," wherein Brian Scalabrine demonstrates emphatically that even the last player on an NBA bench is soooooo far beyond an ordinary person it's not even funny. Brian Scalabrine may not have an impressive stat line, but he belonged in the NBA. Just now, out of curiosity, I looked up Will's stats vs Scal's. And according to the stats, Will Perdue was WAY better than Scal. I realize stats don't say everything, but I think it's enough to eat my words. Will Perdue belonged in the NBA. And really, on reflection, I'm forced to say that if someone doesn't belong in the NBA, then they won't be. Because it is so hard to get in to that league, you have to be so so so good to get there, they are so far beyond the rest of us....you just can't get there if you don't belong there. So, Mr. Perdue, I apologize for my lousy attitude toward you, even though you never knew about it, and my hat's off to you for succeeding in a league that is so good, I don't even understand how good you must have been.
I watch these interviews love them and respect the players now more than ever!! As a kid growing up I watched Will win a championship with the Bulls and thought him Cartwright, and some others just coasted to get rings. They were motivated teammates that took on the challenge of their captain and helped win them Championships.
Compliments Jerry Krause, the guy who dismantled the Bulls at their height and prevented them from going for a 7th championship. He didn’t care about the team in the end.
All good things must come to an end. Krause let his ego get in the way and he didn’t think the aging Bulls could make it thru another season. Pippen was injured most of the season during that last title run.

Passing to teammates doesn’t make them “better”. They may get more involved but it isn’t something that will carry over and have lasting impact should they go somewhere else. Jordan motivated, which ACTUALLY makes teammates better, and gives them the push to develop and reach their potential. That’s what a leader does and in my mind, separates MJ from other greats. Horace, Pippen, BJ and Toni grew up with Michael and 100% were better for it than if they’d been drafted somewhere else. Coaches try to motivate, but having the best player in the world work the hardest, push the most and demand greatness from you as a teammate is rare. Combined that with Michael’s individual skill, determination and athletic ability and that is why he’s the GOAT.

Will Purdue is wrong the Bulls did change the belief of a dominant big man being essential to win a title. The Pistons were the first team to dominate without a dominant big man. The Pistons were also the first to use a Big with shooting range to stretch and space the floor with Laimbeer. Funny how everyone seems to gloss over the Pistons greatness.

Everybody is killing Jerry Kraus for not ripping up Pippen’s contract because it turned out to be a bad deal. Yo, that’s Reinsdorf’s decision...he’s the owner. If I was Reinsdorf, I would’ve done something for Scotty because they won 6 championships and throwing Scotty an extra 5 million per year wouldn’t have hurt anybody considering how much money was coming in. I’m pretty sure Reinsdorf would’ve done things differently if he would’ve known his reputation was going to take this kind of hit.
Tuco The Rat Reinsdorf could’ve done something with incentives. If Pippen was an all star, all defensive team, or won a championship...he would be rewarded. This way Reinsdorf is getting something in return for his generosity. Obviously, he was well within his rights to just stick to the original deal but considering the level of success they enjoyed and the increased value of the Bulls franchise that occurred as a result of all that winning, I would’ve done something to show my appreciation. In the end, Pippen did get his money so nobody needs to cry for Scottie but this is just my opinion. Technically, Reinsdorf did nothing wrong.
