    Karyn, I don't think anyone except Dale was aware of your model building talents! There are so few women model builders and even fewer who are willing to share their talents with the youtube community. Thanks for sharing and I for one hope to see more modeling from both you and Dale.

      I have surprised Dale on many occasions.. When we first met, I told Dale that I was a "car person" and have motor oil running in my veins.. I didn't know if he believed me, or not! Dale mentioned that ALL cool car people have a piston. I said, " I know! I have one!" And I did!! I sent him a picture of my piston! LOL! I grew up building models.. mostly cars. It's fun to do!

      I used (like 20 years ago) "super glue" to put together several Piko buildings. The good news is that ten years later, I have perfect kits back. Totally fell apart, leaving every part in a big heap. In the show we used plastic weld. Works great, Is this the glue that comes in the little tube in the kit? I've used that too, works great. THOSE buildings are the same as the day I out them together. Like a rock!

    I am currently building my grizzly flats and I like your ideas re wood grain finish and green shades, if you make another piko, the windows are double hung meaning both windows can move, kinda tricky to get them in the frame but after a couple you will have it, the other thing is the white board at the beginning can be used to put your advertising on to give them a little depth. Thanks for sharing and please build some more piko!

    This came out fantastic ! Truly stunning detail, and I love the extra modifications. I recall doing one PIKO building ever, when I was a kid running my first LGB trains (like the Colorado and southern mogul ...which I cannot for the life of me find the big snow plow replacement part to change its appearance) , which was a house with a cool waterwheel for that type of scene, which I had planned to have on my layout back then. Needless to say, I did not do nearly as good a job 🤣 👏🏻

      Thanks! It's been a long time since I have done any model building.. The closest was a large Victorian doll house, that my mom gave to my dad one Christmas. It ended up being a family project.. even involving the grandkids!! One of my "ideas" is to make a model of a trailer house... detailed.. Right down to the pink flamingos! Then... take that to a model train show! A model railroad might not be complete without a trailer park! LOL!

    Dale and Karyn, love your videos always love to watch them on Sunday. Here's a little tid bit. The Reason that it's Population 5 that's written on the Grizzly Flats decal is that 5 lived at the Property Grizzly Flats was on. Ward Kimball's home, it was Ward, his wife Betty, and his 3 Children John, Kelly and Chloe. Look up the Friends of the Emma Nevada group on Facebook, this group is restoring Ward Kimball's Emma Nevada to operation.

    Fun! that's all I can say! but in my opinion, I wouldn't use testors glue, I'd use tamiya thin cement but I guess that comes in small amounts but other than that I love the depot!

    • @karynfelix-the-Cat
      @karynfelix-the-Cat 7 лет назад

      Oh... I was never a fan of Testers glue. I use to build model cars, when I was a teen. Testers glue, back then, was like trying to glue two plastic parts together with pine sap! It stuck to my fingers, and made goobers and finger prints on the windows. It glued everything but what it was suppose to!! I was quite impressed with the Testers glue I used on the depot. It did what glue is suppose to do! I will have to try the Tamiya thin cement on another project!

    • @jadenstookey7676
      @jadenstookey7676 7 лет назад +1

      Karyn Felix-Angell oh yes please do, I have been using tamiya for about a year now! it dries rather quickly and shouldn't get fingerprints on the windows, but I'd still be careful with them!

  • @TheWarflight
    @TheWarflight 5 лет назад

    That was beautiful, and looked fun! I'm tempted now to get that kit for my "Dime Novel Legends" figures! (Old West action figures)
    I think that the two square holes in the roof... if I'm not mistaken, is to place the chimney onto one of them. (some folks decorate the insides of G scale structures, and may have one side or the other of the room they want a pot belly stove) I know if I were to find one and build it, I would make the roof removable, and have the inside fully decorated... (as much as possible, at least) But then, I'm one of those idiots that attempts to decorate the insides of HO buildings too... it's because I was probably dropped as a baby, I'm sure.

    • @karynfelix-the-Cat
      @karynfelix-the-Cat 7 лет назад +1

      Thanks! I like N Scale, but really fell in love with TT Scale! Dale has talked me into working with 1/20 scale, and a garden railroad... which really makes sense! The TT Scale is just stinkin' cute! But in order to work with it, I would need more visual magnification than what my bifocals currently give! Also... The hand dexterity isn't what it use to be. Much better to work on a layout that I can actually see, than doing something that requires tweezers and a jewelers loop! Thanks for watching!! :)

  • @daviemaclean61
    @daviemaclean61 7 лет назад

    An expensive kit, but with all that detail I can see why. A great build too and the scale Christmas decorations set it off. I think the square holes in the roof were two options for where to fit the chimney?

    • @daviemaclean61
      @daviemaclean61 7 лет назад

      What's Wallace doing on your train?! ;-)

    • @karynfelix-the-Cat
      @karynfelix-the-Cat 7 лет назад

      Absolutely did not know what the square holes were for... Perhaps something to do with the manufacturing of the roof.. if were and injection type casting. I originally thought that they were for the chimney too... But the front one was too close to the front door, and the rear one was too low for the pipe to clear the ridge line of the roof... Didn't want trouble from the building inspector!! The actual "flashing" of the chimney had cutouts, which formed to the shingles.. So, I placed it near the top, to clear the ridge line on the roof.... That way, Ward Kimball can build a fire in the stove, and not worry about a tiny spark igniting the roof!! LOL!

    • @GrumpSkull
      @GrumpSkull 7 лет назад

      I wouldn't put a pot belly next to a door in real life. All the warm air would get whisked away. My chimney is where the square section is on the rear part of the roof. It was already built when I bought the model. True, it is lower than the ridge line so a draft would not be good if the wind was coming in certain directions. My plastic figures may get a cold butt. :-)

  • @gtfoshea
    @gtfoshea 7 лет назад +1

    absolutely fantastic!! My admiration to both of you!!! Happy and safe New Year!!---One question, Please, The type of glues you used??

    • @ToyManTelevision
      @ToyManTelevision  7 лет назад

      Testors Both the plastic, sold everywhere and the wood glue!! Why? Cause we had some. And it seems to work great for putting in windows. Really cant tell it from the regular glue. HARD TO FIND. Green tube. AND Plastruct plastic weld. Best glue we have found, but can't be used in some areas. Goes on super thin with a brush and evaporates in seconds. So you need to put the parts together and brush on from the back side. (best way)
      Can put on the part and then put the parts together, but you only have about 15 seconds to get it in place. Notice Karyn does that in a buns of places. How the roof was put together.

  • @alexvernyi2368
    @alexvernyi2368 7 лет назад

    Awesome work. Could those holes in the roof have been mounting locations for the chimney base, so you could have it fit slightly flush with the roof?

    • @ToyManTelevision
      @ToyManTelevision  7 лет назад

      We think they are part of the system for pulling the roof out of the mold. The "plugs" hide them, so I assume they really didn't want them there, but needed them for some manufacturing reason.

    • @redbuzzardbass
      @redbuzzardbass 7 лет назад

      I'd bet that's the case, the 2 holes give you 2 choices for placement, the plug fills the one you don't use. There's no reason for them to have the holes for removal from the mold. Lots of companies make model buildings without holes in the roof.

    • @GrumpSkull

    • @ToyManTelevision
      @ToyManTelevision  7 лет назад

      Not sure. They have 2 formulas. This one works with their plastic which most plastic welds don't. this one bonds ABS to Butyrate, ABS to Styrene, ABS to Acrylic. It's radical!! But works well!!

      Toy Man Television I really like their kits. I have built several over the years and I just built a Piko general store kit. I will look for some more this weekend at a local train show. BTW that mysterious piece of white styrene every kit comes with? On my last kit it showed it is supposed to be used for mounting the storefront display decal stickers so it can be glued directly behind the glass, I also never use it or the decals because they look awful, I get 1/2" dollhouse items and use them because they in scale and give the window/interior some depth you dont get with just the decal sticker. :D

      Yup!! The little plastic is just weird. But we figured it had to do with signs. When scratch building we use 1/2 inch doors and windows because you can get them. And they look fine. Cheat the size of the building up a bit and it looks great on a 1/20 scale railroad. Or 1/22. Or 1/2.

    The American accent at times makes a 'can' sound like 'can't'. One of the weird aspects of the English language combined with non English accents that sometimes creates the exact opposite meaning to some listeners therefore dysfunction. No offence intended.
    So, can they be used outdoors or not?

      Yes!! Very UV stable. As long as you use a good welded glue, not super glue. I have the Cripple Creek Depot and it's a bit worse for wear, but it was outside 12 months of the year for 5 years. Some bugs were living in it. Moved them on. But looks great still!! I was in Upstate New York years ago at a White Castle fast food. Gave my order, and the kid just stared at me. Blankly. Then said "I have no idea what you said". Hum....

      Thanks, I have the Grizzly Flats Depo right here next to my desk. I bought it assembled so not entirely sure if it was OK for outdoors. I figured it probably was though. I also have the similar looking Pola 'Silverton' station with regular roof. No longer made and even stronger than the Grizzly Flats. I figure you could almost stand on top of it it is so strong but not going to try.
      I have started assembling the Pola water mill but got stuck because I'm not entirely happy with the glue I was using so found some good advice here. Cheers Toy Man and Karyn and have a happy new year!

      I taught English language learners for our school district.... The English language has to be one of the most difficult... One can go crazy trying to figure it out! That would be the "fun" in dysfunctional..... Or not. :/ This particular model may be used outside.
