Another unpopular opinion: The judges calling a queen’s drag “costume-y” or “crafty” as a bad critique is classist and ignores the messy roots of drag. Also Michelle totally gaslit Chi Chi (rest in peace) when she said “you don’t need money, girl”. Cause she did, and it’s even worse now.

So obviously queens have to resort to cheaper solutions.

Alyssa was not good don’t get me wrong, but imo Orion was worse than Kerri (who in my opinion was at least a bit funny) and had a superior runway to both. i think it should’ve been orion vs alyssa, with alyssa most likely would’ve stayed. 1. some of their critiques begin to boil down to not being as good/polished as valentina's "latina drag" especially when making references to the culture. ex; Vanjie getting dragged on fashion photo review for not doing refrences as well as Valentina ""We've seen the latina thing before by valentina and she did it better"" But youd never hear anyone say anything abou how weve seen the same recycled drag that thin white queens get away with every time
      2. the ONLY latin reference even tolerated is Selena causing good performances like Alexis's Walter Mercado to be completely overlooked
      3. I could see Drag Race Mexico or Drag race Brazil being light years more successful than many other franchises but we see little to no interest from the show to expand south of the U.S.

Why didn't we get to see that sometimes queer introspection does in fact lead to people realizing they're cis and het, but they definitely went 'through the hoops' in figuring themselves out. Pinning Maddy as 'the straight one' just emphasized the, 'Us vs. Them' conversation we often see between cishet and queer people.

Everyone is always taking about how Raven shaped the face of drag, but it confuses me how nobody talks about Miss fame’s makeup artistry that taught us the “new school” method (creams, color correction, primer/ skincare). And Trixie’s makeup has literally defined a new generation of drag queen makeup with the big eye makeup and the chiseling of the face. I feel like neither of these are ever recognized and should be because both have changed drag a lot more than people initially realize.

@@ainsleyswartwout2202 facts!! RPDR does a lot of good for our community at large but it also paints a very 1D image of what drag actually is. Expression, self reflection, a journey between the binaries and societal norms and expectations. I am very lucky to have been raised up by an exceptionally gifted King to see the full picture. So if they get to be cast on the show despite sometimes the show not receiving them so well, why not also drag kings?
But to eliminate this problem to some extent, i think at least 2 kings should be cast on a season instead of the 1 token king, in order to give some reference point to both judges and the audience and make the critiques a bit more based

@@jayden-everttlinklater8794 yeah I can see that. But as someone who has been watching since the show premiered, I think the fans have always been racist - look at how they treated Tyra. She's far from innocent, she was super immature on her season and has done some truly awful things since then. But at the time, basically all she did was act annoying & shady during the competition, and beat Raven. And she got horrible racism and death threats. Now I didn't care for her myself, but there's NO excuse for fans calling her racist names and telling her to unalive herself. So I think the racism was always there since it was a largely white fan base, but times & social media has changed a lot since then - I mean back then we were still sending tweets via text messages lol. Smartphones were just becoming popular. So that changed the game in alot of ways and basically enabled the fans to make asses of themselves. I do think the fan base has become more diverse which is good.
Anyway I don't disagree with your overall point, we 100% need more balance and reason among the fans! It's crazy to me that people reacted that way to the Utica roast. But at the same time I also think we need to do it in a constructive way and no one should use it as an excuse to be hateful to the queens on social media. You can point out social issues without being nasty!

And RuPaul and the audience does enjoy it when the Queens do these performances. And I hope this will be a gateway to finally casting a Drag King.

I know it's not as big of a deal now, but in earlier seasons where queens would call each other out for their bodies (i.e. hog body, backrolls) I feel like it reaffirmed some of the misogyny based on how drag originated in theatre when women weren't allowed to perform. Like yeah you wanna capture "femininity" in your drag but most cisgender women don't have perfectly tiny waists, large bottoms and heart shaped jawlines. Cisgender women can have muscles, full beards and 5 o clock shadows too! Same thing goes for clothing styles, like when the judges got on Kim Chi for wearing a traditional garment and how it didn't show a "shape". As I said, it's not as big of a deal now but it definitely reflects a lot of gender norms and sexism in standard society.
Another thing that's kind of related was when Milk came on the runway for the RuPaul theme as Rupaul in his suit instead of a gown like everyone else, and they scoffed at it, I personally thought it was sickening and an out of the box take! I understand everyone having their own misconceptions and opinions as judges, but I do wish they were able to say "hey, this isn't for me, but I can understand where you come from culturally/artistically/alternatively"

Okay… Having winners be alternative queens doesn’t mean that production DOESN’T know how to celebrate alternative drag. Just look at the amount of challenge wins both Yvie and Willow have. Sure they won, but they were also sidelined in many storylines (this is especially true for Willow), weren’t given challenge wins they deserved (Willow in the roast, Yvie in half the challenges she placed high in), etc. Like, it gets so bad that people say both Willow and Yvie are undeserving winners BECAUSE of their track records not being “the best”. Neither Yvie or Willow had a true “winner’s edit”.

I think drag kings should get their own spin-off show that's judged/hosted by drag kings. I just don't think they'd be fairly judged by Ru because he's spent countless seasons judging only queens and, well, she's a queen herself and can't relate to some of the experiences kings have. The reason kings and nonbinary artists like Landon and Dahli did well on Dragula is because the Boulets know more about drag than just drag queens, despite being queens themselves. I don't think Ru has this knowledge. As much as I want to see drag kings get more of a spotlight, I don't think they'd be fairly judged on the main seasons of DR. If they are going to feature kings, there should be a drag king as a permanent judge alongside Ru.
ETA: I think it's similar to Ru judging the international seasons where he just doesn't understand some of the cultural references. Because he doesn't get them, he can't judge fairly. I feel like it would be this times 100 if he was judging drag kings

It was briefly touched on, but I want to bring it up from the perspective of somebody who's active in the alternative drag scene.
One of my biggest gripes about RPDR is that the show casts such an insanely NARROW scope of drag. I like to say that there's "drag race drag" and "real world drag". In the real world, cis women doing drag, trans women doing drag, nonbinary performers, plus sized entertainers, and drag artists that don't just do femme drag are SO much more common than it's shown on the show. It gets irritating as a drag artist, because unless you're doing hyper femme drag and doing a top 40 song, "drag fans" (aka fans of the show who don't know anything about the actual scope of realistic drag) will look at you like you're a disgusting... creature. Drag Race has created a harmful idea that there's a cookie cutter mold of drag, and anything that doesn't fit it is "bad", or of "lesser quality".

    • @Zloop14

I've being thinking a lot how watching through seasons at RPDR Is also watching a man, RuPaul himself, accepting that drag doesn't belong just to cis gay males. Think once you accept that there are different styles of lip sync, like Symoné walking but still turning the party, you begin to appreciate that dips and tricks are not the definition of a great lip sync. Ru has been walking in her lip syncs, serving face (specifically mouth) since the late 80's, it's now her signature at this point. Producers tried to give Alyssa a villain edit on season 5 but it was overshadowed by how iconic and loveable she is.
I’ve been watching the season recently and I keep noticing them set up Coco as the sympathetic figure and Alyssa, an arrogant nutcase.
Starting with the rivalry, Coco is way more fleshed out. We get to know how hurt she really was after the pageant where as Alyssa was only shown to be offended by Coco. Then in the competition, Coco does well in challenges she doesn’t expect to and turns it out in amazing lip syncs when she fails. Alyssa on the other hand wins a challenge she was expecting to do well in,then was saved by immunity, gets a double shantay with the other villain Roxxxy and sends the fan favourite miss congeniality home.
All of this culminates in them both being in the bottom and Coco slays it,wins the lip sync and thus wins the rivalry.
On top of all that, you get moments in between of the other queens commenting on how self-centered Alyssa can be in confessionals, including our heroes Coco and Jinkx.

sure it sucks that people don't see you as the first choice, but that comes with the territory of getting a win that prestigious by default. why in the hell would you go to the person you took the crown from for sympathy because people don't like you as much as they liked her? obviously alyssa is going to feel some type of way about it. coco seemed so badly to want alyssa to validate her win without acknowledging that it was a sore spot for them both, not just coco.
i don't mean to imply that either are "bad people" or that i know how they feel about the situation, but i think a situation that complicated + competitive reality television + a cash prize on the line = the absolute disaster we witnessed on our screens, and i think both were at fault for that result. and of course, i would be remiss to not recognize that they seem to have buried the "hatch", and moved on like the professionals they are.

All Stars seasons need to go back to being once every few years or so and actually let the queens grow and develop their craft. Some queens that get cast on AS today are because they had a line on the show that became a meme or were percieved as "robbed" by fans when they weren't at all and then they come back and have another lackluster run and prove that they were eliminated on their original season for a good reason.

RuPaul has created a show that has become a cornerstone of the LGBTQIA+ community and despite her flaws she deserves nothing but respect and gratitude for everything she has given us. She will retire when she's ready and not a second sooner and anyone against that is trash.

Agreed. I've sort of gone from a big Ru fan (I'm old enough to remember when she was first getting famous and what that meant to the gay community) to being SO over her (the shit she said to Pearl, the "don't blame the edit" narrative, the fracking, etc). But it's her show. if you don't like her, don't watch it. She's not going to retire.
I also think there are a lot of young people nowadays who are growing up in a much more connected and "woke" world and it's so fantastic to see people thinking about other people's feelings and respecting their identities. But there's definitely a certain amount of intolerance for the past and where we as a community have come from and what we went through and how language evolves over time, etc. A lot of these queer kids don't even remember a time before gay marriage was legalized (or hell, a time before Drag Race). Like sure, Ru absolutely should've been called out for "You've Got She-Mail" and not letting trans queens compete if they'd transitioned, but there's a line between valid criticism/calling out and expecting a 60-something year old revolutionary queer person to know every little thing that has changed in queer culture while she's been busy building a media empire and not make any mistakes. I mean, look at her references and what she expects the queens to know on her show. She didn't even get Valentina's Yzma/Pull The Level reference and we're expecting her to not make mistakes about language used by queer people born after that movie came out? Dang! Like, I'm not huge stan of hers anymore but I also think she deserves some leeway and some credit for everything she's done.
tl;dr I think we should expect Ru to get with the times, but there needs to be some patience and respect shown to her as one of the many icons who fought for us to get to where we are now.

This may be an unpopular opinion of an unpopular opinion, but I really don't think drag kings should compete, at least in the state the show is now. I do think they should feature drag kings; there's so many challenges where a king could play one of the roles. But, I just don't think Ru can accurately judge a king nor does the competition cater to the drag that kings do yet. One thing I *love* about Dragula is that the drag is so diverse and the challenges can include various types of drag. Look at season 4, you had both Sigourney Beaver, a cis female with a glamorous aesthetic, and Dahli, a more masculine kingly drag style, both killing the competition and making it to the finale. The Boulets can offer criticism that doesn't lock drag into a narrow box. Its obvious that Ru still has a strong preference for the high-femme female impersonation type of drag queen. I'm just concerned that if a king is cast, he'll be tossed to the side by production while they try to parade how inclusive they are. We still see bad handling of certain alternative queens, look at the mistreatment of Charity Kase on UK3. The show is definitely getting better, but I still don't have faith that they can treat a king with anything besides shallow tokenism at this point.

In total agreement re: queer culture education! I've been watching RPDR since it came out in 2009. I'm a bisexual cis woman and have been involved in the LGBT community for much of my life, so I was already familiar with many of the references. I used to watch every ep with my best friend who is a gay man (we live across the country now, so these days we watch together via text.) And on the early seasons of drag race, we would both learn new things all the time! I mean tbf we were in our early 20s but still, we weren't ignorant to culture. But we would look up the references from the show and find tons of classic queer media. Like neither of us would've heard of Paris is Burning or ball culture without the show (this was before PIB was on netflix or anything, no one was talking about it back then.)
(Btw sorry for the boring life story, but I wanted to make it clear that I was not new to queer culture when I started watching, and I *still* learned so much from the show.)
And I do agree that the show needs to stay current as well or it becomes Rupaul's Old Person Reference Show, but a mix of new and old is great! I'd love to see more runway themes that are inspired by LGBT references, I understand lots of stuff is copyright but there are many you can do. And more like the "Before & After" runway from AS7 where the queens have the opportunity to reference so many things, and create a fresh take on them. More challenges like the John Waters acting challenge from S7.
I just hate how the show has kinda gotten Sanitized for a certain crowd. And no it's not only the straight women, a lot of them are basic gays who don't know of anything prior to 2015. Rupaul needs to start walking the children in nature! Seriously it's 2022, everyone has a computer in their hand, let them look up the references and learn. Ru can do a quick explainer at the beginning of the challenge/runway so they know where it's coming from. Teach the kids!!!
    (Apologies for my essay)

Season 7's big problem is that the challenges are AWFUL. Too many SCRIPTED acting challenges, too many scripted challenges periodt, and the most awful/bizarre dancing challenge that judged them IN TEAMS. The only good scripted challenge on Season 7 was Glamazonian Airways. All the non-scripted challenges on Season 7 were good to great, except for the bizarre DESPY awards that I still don't understand HOW they judged.
An allowance wouldn't make the battlefield equal in terms of lewks. What's going to happen then is that the queens who have the best relationship with designers would still end up getting the best garments, since they aren't buying those, they're probably borrowing them. The queens from the middle of nowhere would still end up looking the worst unless, or even if they know how to sew.
A future "Versus the World" should have a smaller cast, and no eliminations. Let the drama fester in there, there will be teams and stuff.

my long list of unpopular opinions and 3, 2 , 1
    - Mo and Juju were poorly viewed in UKvsTW because in their previous all stars season, they set the bar of a great all star competitor as high as Mount Everest combined with 12 skyscrapers. Mo and Juju in their respective seasons had the top 3 TR of the season, gave one of the best performances of the show (Mo eating up the improv , Juju eating Snatch Game, etc...) the best storyline and were sorta the main narrators of their season.
    - AS1, UKvsTW and As4 are camp af
    - Holland 2 isnt bad its just what happened in the last 2 pre-finale episodes just made the fans mad. The sewing challenge was great, the snatch game, that talent show, etc...
    - Divina De Campo was not robbed at all in UK1 (idk why people keep saying that 😭)
    - The show should hire more script writers for acting/rusical challenges. (since tbh most acting challenges in DR are either one of the best challenges of the season like Bra Wars, Beastenders, Moulin Ru, Downtown Draggy, etc... or some really crunchy ones like Henny I Shrunk the Drag Queen, PharmaRusical, Breastworld, etc...)
    - The last category of the ball challenge should be more heavily weighed on into judging since the first 2 looks can easily be bought by money.
    - Uk3 isnt that bad, sure the middle part was incredibly weak, but the premiere was great, the ball, acting, roast, the finale was great as well. AND the lip syncs were incredible. I feel people were just pretty stuck up with what happened in the middle part like vic's exit, the no winner twist, double elim. But still.....THE COCKNEY QUEEN IS IN THE HOUSE
    - They should bring back the untucked lipsync acting challenge from season 5 episode 2 again (honestly one of the best challenge ideas of all time.)
    - The no-winner twist is a good twist and probably couldve been used in some episodes like the Vogue one in Holland 1 , commercial challenge in season 4 episode 3, s2 makeover, etc...
    - Icesis Couture, similar to Priyanka is one of the most underrated winners in the show (for me). Icesis really grew on me watching Canada 2, from winning episode 1 and instantly being in the bottom right in the next episode and landing in the bottom about 1 episode after winning the ball and managed to give incredible lip syncs there. She always gave a very humble feel in the edit across most episodes and the makeover episode just made me stan Icesis Couture even more and the fact she almost sewn EVERYTHING she made in the runway. I sorta hate how fans may not like winners because they had either the second or third best in their season but in the recent years has track record really mattered much?

Being first/Early out is not indication of a queen's talent. Every queen that has been on the show has the potential to win a season. Nina says it best "sometimes the stars just align". It will entirely depend on what challenges happen, what song they lip sync to and a hell of a lot of other outside factors. Look at Daya Betty on s14. She went home first because she did bad on one challenge and ok in a lip sync. Only for her to kill the rest of the season, get to top 5 and beat 3 queen's in two lip syncs. Other examples include Ongina in AS5 who was clearly not in the right headspace after being in the btm ep1 and then getting called out by MZ Cracker as well as struggling with a SINGING challenge due to a sore throat. Bonus points Shea Coule who might have won s9 if Ru didn't introduce the Lip Sync smackdown rule, the wheel didn't land on Trinity -(who had conspired with Peppermint to pick each other as they knew the show wanted Shea and Sasha as top 2), Peppermint chose the other box with So Emotional in it or if she didn't sadly suffer through some personal family issues at that time. If just one of those things were different would she have won s9? Maybe. And if she did who would have won AS5? Sometimes the stars just align to help certain queen's do well or do poorly on a season.

My hot take is that as an actual tv show, drag race is only enjoyable if you've never watched other things. The editing of the show needs a revamp stat. I've been watching things like the circle lately and the editing is SO tight and gripping there even though they really don't have much to work with, the creation of storylines is so organic and captivating that even though I can tell where producer medling comes in, I frankly don't even mind.
After not watching the show for a while and coming back for season 14, it is slow or rushed (no in-betweens) and it's very obviously a manufactured simple narrative being presented. Yes, we are queer, yes, the drag is fun, yes, the fandom is toxic and we somehow like that, but what if the show was actually well made?

I think its true that for example Drag Race Espana is catered towards the international audience, but I dont see a problem with that, because the original Drag Race is so focused on the US and as an international viewer, you really notice that. The show is very patriotic at times, which might feel a bit weird to non-American viewers, and a lot of the guest judges or people they reference I’ve literally never heard of. The other seasons are a great way to give people some references they can actually understand.

The s7 onward identity crisis stems from rupaul only expecting the show to last 6 season, look at the winners, baby rupaul, americas sweetheart, the fasion goddess, the gender bent ghoul, the quirky under dog and the all rounder professional legend with a heart. It was rus story, the arcs died since then and after it moved to logo in S9 and got some emmys, it became about money, mainstream, fame and legacy. 1. Aquaria beat Eureka in the “If” (Janet Jackson) lip sync in s10. Idc if she fell, she won.
    2. Miz Cracker is overrated, her personality is a pretty big turn off for me.
    3. Season 11 is the worst season of them all.
    4. Widow Von Du, Denali, Max Malanaphy, and Ivy Winters all deserved to be in the Top 4 on their seasons.
    5. Rock M Sakura definitely would murder an early-out season. Not only is her makeup better than Trixie’s or Kim Chi’s, but I’d argue that Rock M is a funnier queen, too. I need her back on TV.
    6. All stars 4 and 5 very easily could have not existed. I was excited to see many of these queens back on drag race but both seasons were cringy.

I think All Stars 4 and 5 should’ve been combined. It would’ve been cool if it was 1 season rather than both of the two, if only like half of those queens were brought back, and if we had a few yrs in between all stars. I don’t think we need it every year.

The talent show/variety show challenges are fun and all, but at this point, nearly everybody does a song that they wrote, and it's kinda repetitive. The songs are usually about how great they are, and if they don't happen to be about that, I don't actually remember cause they all blend together. On AS7, I genuinely don't remember anyone's songs, I can only remember what Raja and Monet did (the only ones to do something different), and even though Monet did sing, she did freaking opera, how cool is that?? I feel like if everyone is gonna be doing the same type of thing, it's kinda boring, and I don't really wanna watch it lol
