You aren't supposed to use the basic melee attack unless you have a weapon but only a few of those are worth using, most combat situations are made up of Press Jump, press jump repeatedly to kill everything
Melee attacks were meant to be used to break creates or destroy certain parts of the scenary. The game encourages you to use the homing attack or guns to dispose of enemies.

Well, that's how it worked when I was 8 years old.
But the last console I owned was called the Mega Drive, and came out in 1989. Nobody owned TV's back then, so we had to go to the local cinema to rent screen time to play videogames. We had to drive to the cinema on a horse drawn buggy. Streetlights were just poles shoved into the dirt with jars full of fireflies on the end.
Daddy worked in the Cole mine, and womenfolk weren't in the workforce because they still did what the menfolk told em to. You could go to sears roebuck and buy a dog whip. No law man could tell you not to take a belt to yer younguns, and American automobiles weren't pieces of crap. A'course you had to turn a crank on the front to get em started, and you could break yer arm iff'n youse did it wrong.
There was hoss poop all over the streets, and iff'n womenfolk left the house with their knees visible, they were stoned to death fer bein' harlots and whores of Babylon.

Genuinely the first "Sonic" game I ever played
The game really hasn't aged well, but oh if you'd only gone through the hint marker and realised you could have doubled jumped/ lock on to enemies, it would only have made your experience fractionally less awfully XD #findthecomputerroom
Wrong, this game aged like a fine wine, i played this game again after years and is very fun, only some parts of the game are annoying when you have to jump on levitating floors.
The branching story line was actually a nice touch.
Midway Wrestling 326 different ways to play the game is quite the high replay value, so i agree.

I loved this game as a kid. I’d give my sister the controller so she could play. I was too young to figure out how to unlock the different paths, now that I’m older I am trying to actually unlock all the different paths. Yeah the controls are a little difficult, but it is still fun.

I like how he doesn’t use the hint bubbles to know the controls then complains about something that was in the hints. Like the homing attack lol. Still was funny to watch.
Forgot how much this game was like Sonic Heroes
Same engine and character models, with some added bloom lighting on the enviroments. PS2 version does look worse tho.

Oh god I remember being in Game with some money I got from Christmas and my dad gave me the choice of getting either Shadow the hedgehog or Pokemon: XD gale of darkness and in my naive youth I chose Shadow thinking it will only be a month or so before I could get XD for the same price. 5 years later I finally got a copy of XD in CEX in the middle of several copies of Shadow the hedgehog and it hadn't even lost any value in that time!
Gale of darkness wasn't that great tho. One of the lesser entries imo.

Honestly, games not as bad on gamecube. Controls are actualy playable and makes the gameplay as fun as shadow the hedgehog can be. Though that dosent excuse the poor story and graphics, I look back fondly on this game as "The Room" of video games. I load it up now and again for a laugh, my freind group still jokingly say "Damn, not here." And "mArIA!" Not a good game by any means. But fun.
Graphics ain't too shabby on GC. Some impressive lighting effects and draw distance, plus 60 fps.
This felt like Peter and Dick had a breakdown.....
I remember renting this game when I was a kid to play with my friends. We never even touched the campaign and just played the multiplayer mode. I barely remember anything about it, but I don't think any of us were particularly impressed by it.
Jesus Christ on roller skates, I know from experience how bad this game can be but I still can't wrap my head around how terrible Peter is at it.
I know this game has a cult following, but much like the fan following for the "Super Mario Bros." movie, I will never understand the cult following for this game. Nor will I understand the cult following for "Sonic 2006".
Because 06 is fun when you know what you're doing.

I’ve been avoiding this vid as I really liked Shadow The Hedgehog when it first came out. Liked the video though lads, as always. But honestly a shame you didn’t like the game. I played it over and over when I first got it, and loved it. Watching this has made me want to dig it out and replay it too! Though I had it for 360 if that makes any difference.
(And Peter, you can do the homing attack on enemies, as well as auto-dash along lines of rings, so the fact that you didn’t realise that definitely would have made the game harder and more frustrating for you.)
Anyway, loved you guys all the way back from the beginning and always will! Keep up the good work!

@@gamerlife4276 Shadow the Hedgehog isn't bad at all. I'd play it again in 2020 in a heartbeat. I actually don't get why its hated. Maybe its just because it controlled differently. It was my first sonic game on gamecube and it was good.

But, when you’re not paying attention to the hints/controls to the point that you don’t know you can use homing attack, then that’s on you tbh.
I actually like Shadow the Hedgehog (The character and the game). As a kid, I didn't understand the hate. I do now but I don't share a lot of the hate for the character

I played this game for a few days, got bored of it, and never touched it again. Lol.
PS2 version of this game is nearly unplayable because of the framerate and imput lag. Game has flaws, but it can be enjoyable if you play the other 2 versions.
Do you honestly expect someone to just purchase a whole new playform and copy of the same game just to play a less broken version of an old game generally regarded as mediocre at best? Come now, mate. If Sega didn't even try, why should we?
Just One Guy You're right. I really like this game, warts and all, but i agree that Sega didn't give a shit when porting this and Heroes to PS2. Playing this version does make the game look worse to newcomers tho.
Controversial opinion, but having only played this and the Sonic Adventure games as an adult, Shadow is far superior in terms of controls and gameplay (not soundtrack don't worry, City Escape will always hold my heart). Far too many are blinkered by nostalgia for the Adventure games - great ideas, but they play out awfully.

Yay, I've played this one! Had a good time as a 10 year old, and it's my only experience (only one I went out of my way to play) in the Sonic universe. Hasn't held up so well hehehehhe.
Oh man theres such a better selection of games in the franchise lol. Im not quite as harsh on this one (ironically it attracted a younger audience and I was already a little older lol) but the original games, Sonic Mania, Colors for a 3D title, I mean there's so many I reccomend if you ger the chance. Especially Sonic 2, 3, Knuckles, Mania. Mania is prob the best starting point.

Trust me, this game IS a war crime. It's got 10 different endings. Let me say that again, in case you didn't get it the first time: TEN DIFFERENT ENDINGS, all of which are mandatory to complete this Edgy the Hedgy, the game, the movie; the story. This game IS turbo bad. There's an ACTUAL ending where Shadow the Edgy, actually karate chops Dr. Eggboy to death. Seriously. I'm not even being funny. He seriously karate chops him to death in one ending. That's supposed to to be the Neutral ending. Not the evil ending; but neutral. There's an actual ending where Mr. Brooding the Edge-hog, thinks he's an android. Because he was created by an alien. When Peter said this game was worse than Sonic '06, he wasn't kidding. And he was right. This game's WAY past worse than Sonic '06. And I've played both this and Sonic '06 multiple times over the years. I played both games when they were both new. It was truly a horrible time. Sure, Sonic 06 and Shadow's Edgy Adventures have good music, but the gameplay between the both of them gives me PTSD just thinking about how horrible they were to play. And I could never finish Edgy the Hedgy more than twice. I got the karate chop of death ending both times. But I beat Sonic '06 in full. Every story, all the way to the final boss with Solaris. But I can't finish this game. Shad the Hog is just a terrible excuse of a game. Also, the guy that plays the main villain of this game, (who's name is Black Doom fyi) is the same guy who plays Goku from DBZ. But at least these guys made watching this game somewhat enjoyable, but I feel bad they had to put themselves through it for our entertainment.

Same here. I'd rather play through Sonic '06 all the way again. This game's not worth playing through TEN times to beat it. Plus, Shadow or whatever, decides to just save the day at the end of the game ANYWAY. So it never mattered what ending you got, whether you karate chopped Dr. Eggman to death, or what ever other stupid and horrendous thing this game would've had you do, it ain't no Chrono Trigger, the ONLY game with ten endings that's worthwhile. I snapped the GCN disc and broke the game case as a kid, because of how shitty the game is. This is a million times worse than Sonic '06. If I was forced to choose which Sonic game I'd play, choose: Sonic '06, Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood, the crappy DS game, or like, Sonic Rush/Sonic Rush Adventure, Generations, or even something like the 2 Sonic storybook games. Anything's better than this. I just hope the upcoming Shadow Generations game isn't bad, like this, or Sonic '06. We've seen enough terrible Sonic games already, like Forces, or Edgey the Hedgey. Or Sonic '06. And those are just the WORST ones I've played!

I remember trying to play this at a friend's house when we were kids. He had owned the game for ages but could never get into it. We only played for a short while before switching to Champions: Return to Arms.
I picked this up the other day , put it on expecting a flood time and then turned it off.
Loved this game as a kid. Guess I had no taste back then. Great episode guys

I remember very much enjoying this game as a kid
I grew up loving this game as a kid. Then as soon as I had access to the internet I saw people shitting on this game everywhere and I agree with most of their points but it still makes me sad how cruel people are towards it. It's interesting in terms of the story and what it does to flesh out shadow as a character. It just didn't properly stick the landing. I loved the idea of branching levels based on what group you sided with.
The casual reference to Dick & Dom sent this American down a rabbit hole from which I may never recover.

It means play Sonic Rush on the DS! An actual fun and good side scrolling time in the Sonic universe! With Rush Adventure, and the DS version of Sonic colors being even better.
