- Sonic's shoes are arguably one of the most recognizable pieces of clothing in gaming. They've been around for just about as long as the blue blur has, but that begs the question "how?". I wanna take a deep dive into Sonic the Hedgehog lore and see if I can narrow down an idea as to just what these special articles are crafted from. Join me as I try to figure out just what Sonic's special Jordans are really made of!

One thing I think should be considered is that Sonic changes his shoes every now and then, like with the lightspeed shoes in sa1.

The lightspeed shoes were the first instance where I was like "huh, I kinda like this more than the regular look." Then SA2 introduced the SOAP shoes and I achieved nirvana
Another thing that should be noted is that in the Sonic Twitter Takeover #6, a user asked, "How often do you gotta replace your gloves or clean them?" Tails responded with, "Each person's hands stay pristine thanks to the special polymer I sprayed on everyone's gloves."
I love how nobody in the takeover ever mentioned the shoes, despite the question clearly being about the shoes as much as the gloves. Feels very intentional.

Given the Zombot Saga, I imagine clothes in Sonic are designed to be organic, while somehow simultaneously as durable as their wearer. This could be what made said clothes vulnerable to the metal virus, they may be symbiotic when it comes to durability.

I've always just chalked up Sonic's shoe durability to Tail's researching Sonic's speed and making shoes to compensate for his speed, didn't know there was actually official info for it tho.
I mean, it makes sense. He's also the reason their gloves stay pearly white, they're coated in a dirt-resistant polymer he invented.

Me too, a lil head canon, but in an ep of sb tails had to make sonic more shoes because I think the wind speed after effect was too loud.
This video is quite brilliant but I think you're missing the obvious idea that it's eggman made it. My headcanon is during Sonic labyrinth he stole and replicated Sonic shoes it made them durable to a stand his speed to prevent him from running but, tails tempered with them giving sonic invincible new kicks.
That is a good a good head canon honestly. My only problem with it is that the Japanese manual says the emeralds will let sonic take the slow down boots off instead of still using the same shoes. Idk tho lol. I like the idea 👍

This video has reminded me of an episode of Sonic boom when eggman give Sonic new shoes to trick him they however do let him handle his speed unlike any another. also a slight answer is Sonic is holding back.

Theoretically, it could also be the rings since they are shown to have power protection qualities. Maybe the energy from the rings protects his shoes and allows them to bend and morph in different ways.

I think the metal soles are actually metal because when Sonic grinds on a rail in the modern games there's sparks, which would be the result of the friction of metal striking metal.
Sonic’s shoes are UNDEFEATABLE
The Megatal idea actually really works, as does the idea that it's the metal the Ancients used. When you look at the architecture of the Ancients the metal used appears to be very shiny, Sonic's shoes are also incredibly shiny. Although considering some of the landscape in the islands it's also possible that the material they used is a natural resource, as there are patches of it that are embedded into the landscape (this is most notable I think on Kronos and Ouranos). When you consider that (and the shiny factor) it could be theorised that Megatal, the material the Ancients used, and Diamondius are actually the same material (perhaps at different stages of refinement). Actually, considering this I think the best kind of "headcannon" (idea) is this:
Same story you came up with, Sonic at the end of 3d blast runs his shoes down completely and commissions Tails to make some new ones, (here's where it differs from yours), Tails is able to find a natural vein of the Megatal/Diamondius/whatever they call it, is able to extract some of it for testing, realises how durable it is (and the kicker (heh) about Sonic's shoes - they are both Hard AND Tough (and yes those are two different things - Diamond is the HARDEST material of Earth, not the Toughest) his shoes are JACKED) and decides to use this strange material for the shoes. He combines it with some high quality leather (Don't question where it comes from) and decides to add something else to the mix, something that could help in a pinch - Tails does a Sir Charles and harnesses the energy from the planet. (Side note: It's basically agreed amongst the community at this point that Rings - at least in the games - are a byproduct from the planets natural energy clumping together and forming a ring shape, this is why Sonic (who is a SPONGE when it comes to types of energy) is able to use them to such high effectiveness) Because Tails infused the shoes with energy from the planet they become adaptable to certain circumstances, like for example, being able to suddenly change shape when Sonic goes Werehog - or say - being able to withstand going Super so many times as well, this might even explain how they're able to withstand the true highest speeds of Sonic, a physical material (no matter how strong) would eventually show wear and tear from the shear FORCE that is needed to go at the speeds Sonic does regularly, but energy (which does not necessarily have a proper form) could adapt to such high speeds easily, essentially holding the whole thing together.
TL;DR: Sonic's shoes are made of a Megatal/ring energy hybrid material with some added high-quality leather to spice things up, and that's why they are indestructible.
I like the idea of the shoes being made of the same material the robots on the starfall islands are made of. Of course it explains their durability, and if it's *programmable* metal, that would make the shoes compatible with any power-ups sonic picks up along the way a la the lightspeed shoes or anything similar.
I always took his sneakers as Tails creating a polymer to protect his feet from the elements and the sole is a rubber/metal alloy he created to allow for friction on rails and comfortable mobility that sneakers provide
Honestly, Sonic Team just needs to indicate that Gold Rings are a byproduct of Chaos energy, something like Nature trying to establish order. Seeing as Gold Rings basically get adsorbed by Sonic and prevent him from taking what would otherwise be a lethal blow like a force field; I'd like to argue that it's actually the Gold Rings that keep Sonic's probably ordinary shoes in preem condition.
If the soul is really metal it explains the sparks when he slides on rails
Sonic definitely has multiple pairs of shoes that he rotates between. He's also got pairs like the SOAP and PUMA shoes, and it's probable that he has many that look rather similar to his usual look.
I don't think any part of his shoes are indestructible. He probably wears a pair for a single adventure and then swaps to another pair after. That being said, they are probably custom shoes that he's having made specifically for him since no ordinary shoe could ever handle the wear and tear he'd be subjecting them to. Tails is a likely candidate for who is supplying him with his kicks, but it's also entirely possible he just knows a guy offscreen who specializes in shoes and makes him custom pairs as a sort of special favor or something. His socks and gloves are probably special custom made too for the same reason.

So his shoes should be something like the Flash's suit - really durable and resistant to heat and drag
You know, this is a topic I really like ! For my own rewrite of the canon, I made his shoes something entirely made out of magic ( chaos energy ) that he can summon. It's like Amy's hammer !
Unrelated side note, but my version of his shoes has non-removable inhibitor rings included, haha, funny that.
i think sonic's shoes are made of the shell of his balls (the gum tree fruit) in the classic universe, which is why they're so strong AND he has red soles underneath because hes technically still a kid, however in the modern universe i think sonic's shoes are what you said here, his shoes are either made of rings and have megatal soles, or are made with classic's original shoes that tails remade or even fixed up with megatal soles underneath, and the buckle could be made of rings which is why its golden plated,
either-way, sonic's shoes are kinda weird, its either its made of smth powerful, or its his feet
or his shoes are hiding his horrendous feet and they're just so powerful they can't break or be removed because sonic's feet are so boat foghorn to the point that his shoes and socks have stuck to his feet, and he can't take them off so his feet are permanently his shoes now and if we tried to take off his shoes his entire foot would come off

The shoes' sole could be some kind of kevlar (yes, the one used for bullet-proof vests), like in the real world (some irl military boots have kevlar on their soles)
My headcanon is that he just gets a new pair every game, he just has a wardrobe filled with like 50 copies of the same exact pair of shoes that he just switches out every time they’re starting to deteriorate

Sonic's shoes are similar to Knuckles or Mario's gloves (which can't be destroyed even with all those powers and strength)
For Mario, gloves actually are equipment in Super Mario RPG and some of the Mario & Luigi games, so it's possible that he simply just changes them every once-in-a-while.
As for Knuckles, I dunno, probably has something to do with the Master Emerald.

Well if I remember correctly: there was a comic when sonic was a normal brown hedgehog but still he had super speed but it was nerfed then. And sonic was living with Dr. Kintobor AKA Dr. Robotnik (when he was a good guy). And then kintobor wanted to use all of the 7 chaos emeralds powers to ereas all evil in mobius, and he was doing tests on sonic's speed and trying to find his speed's limit at the same time. And one day kintobor made the iconic classic shoes for sonic at that time and he said that these shoes will last longer with sonic and not be damaged quickly. After sonic wore them they did a new speed test and at that time kintobor had collected all 7 chaos emeralds but he didn't know how to harness its power and he put them in one of his machines. While sonic was doing the tests, kintobor has found amazing results that sonic's speed kept increasing and for some reason the chaos emeralds were reacting to sonic and they made him transform into super sonic for the first time ever. But it resulted in an explosion and sonic coming out of smoke and he appeared in his iconic blue look. His look has changed due to turning into super sonic for the first time and a huge amount of chaos energy has entered his body for the first time. I think that sonic has got his super durability and power and his shoes become more durable due to the chaos energy. I am just saying "maybe".

what is even funnier to me is that the sonic in the movie is able to go at speeds that exceed anything in the universe (even light) and somehow his shoes, both old and new, are not destroyed despite the fact that he stomps on the ground with such force that he could theoretically send the entire ground flying miles away

I couldve sworn i remembered the shoes originally being the reason sonic could go fast in the first place, being a creation by eggman that sonic had stolen, implying they were made of a material likely made by eggman to stand up to the speeds of the shoes. Why eggman would make shoes that make you run fast and specifically only fit a hedgehog, who knows.

So one thing about Sonic's shows is that they are actually boots more specifically Santa's boots. The white part of the shoes is actually not his socks but instead the fluff Santa has on his boots but what Sonic does is fold them down. This was stated by Naoto Ohshima aka the guy who made Sonic on his twitter. This might now be seen noncanon because I think they now see his shoes as running sneakers.

megatal plothole: how does tails just randomly come across a statue made of megatal in the ground? outside of the gaia temples and starfall islands, we have NO idea where the ancients went, so it wouldnt make sense to just randomly find the stuff in a statue
I'm pretty sure Sonic's original shoes were made by Eggman. He was experimenting on animals and Sonic was one of them and developed shoes that could withstand high speed and friction. Ofc not long after this was when Sonic realised Eggman was building badniks and the two became sworn enemies.
Every other pair since then are likely dulpications/upgraded pairs made by Tails who is pretty good at reverse engineering Eggman's tech.
(This would also line up with Shadow's "Air Shoes" like developed by Gerald Robotnik for Shadow since he too would likely destroy any pair of shoes he runs in.)

12:05 sorry to be a pratt, but there is a plot hole here: in sa1, Tails says "long time no see". if this head-cannon did indeed happen as you described, then that line would not make much sense.
That’s a good point. My counterpoint to that is Sonic Team used to be obsessed with that line, using it for almost every character entry scene. They used it throughout most adventure/dark age games as a characters way of saying “hello”
My headcanon is that Sonic's shoes are boots, because Sonic comes from Christmas Island and i don't know but i guess it is pretty cold, maybe it snow there so he is used to use boots and how boots are stronger and durable than shoes/sneakers, it seems a bit more realistic, it fits in the lore and is a cute thing of the place he came from

The in-game models and animations in Unleashed were actually done by Sonic Team and, with the exception of Chip and a handful of others in certain scenes, were actually mo-caped which is why they sometimes move in a similar way to the animation in SA2 and 06
