Sonic fans have had plenty of things to talk recently; Sonic Origins Plus, Sonic Prime, the Sonic Frontiers updates, even a brand new game in the form of Sonic Superstars.
But instead of talking about any of that relevant stuff, today I'll be shouting irrelevant trivia about something a little different; we're leaving our PlayStation 5's and Nintendo Switch's behind and taking a trip to the arcade.
Before Sonic Adventure, before Sonic R and even before Sonic 3D Blast, Sonic's REAL first 3D game was a little fighting game called Sonic the Fighters, also known as Sonic Championship.
With mixed reception on release, Sonic the Fighters hasn't exactly left behind the greatest legacy. Well, luckily for you, I'm here to tell you that Sonic the Fighters has a lot more going on under the hood than you might expect.

I got to play this game in the Sega arcades in Lost Judgment and my favorite part was the character models with the way they squash and stretch, it gave it a very unique visual identity.
Sonic the fighters is most likely gonna be a mainstay for arcade mini games in the yakuza/ judgement series since lost judgement which is great to see
It’s also gonna be in Like a Dragon Gaiden.

In the story of Sonic the Fighters, all of the characters are all guardians each emerald. The only exception was Fang as he stole his emerald from someone else who never see or get the name of.

@@SaddieMoon No what I meant was, how did Sonic's clone get an emerald? Shouldn't Sonic already have it? And it's not like the clone was just born with a Chaos Emerald. Maybe Eggman used the Chaos Emerald to make the clone or something.
@@Jaice420 I don’t have an answer for that.
I personally think the clone either obtained the emerald in the cloning process from the original, or the emerald you gain from them isn’t actually what happened. And the character you play as always had the emerald on hand. So it’s just a visual thing to show what level you beat in the list.

It might partly be my nostalgia, but I always had fun playing Sonic the Fighters with friends back when you could only get it on Gems Collection. Even friends who didn't care about Sonic loved playing it for some reason, but either way still grateful for its existence.
Fighting games bring people together, it's all about just the fun clashing
Honey the Cat is one of the best Sonic characters ever, and I am still very upset that the Archie Comics got canceled one arc before she was going to make a return.
Yeah I'm sad we didn't get to see more of her :( but I don't think she's in Ken Pender's grasp so she might make a return!

If for some reason you decide to play this game through the Yakuza games, be it Lost Judgment/ LAD Gaiden or Infinite Wealth, keep in mind that the only carryover feature from the XBLA port is selecting Honey the cat, you cannot play as Eggman or Metal Sonic in those versions

I distinctly remember the arcade of this game as a child being at an old children's pizzaria called Jeepers. Fang and Espio standing out to me the most as the only two characters I knew about at the time was Sonic, Tails and Eggman (aka Robotnic).
...Now for my absurd head cannon for a sequel to this "Marvelous Queen" of a gem!
Mechanically, it doesn't have to change all that much if at all tbh. Just give different moves to each character more moves than the original, a super meter (shaped like a chaos emerald that goes up to at least 7 levels as well as changes into their colors for each level) and give the barriers more uses than just blocking attack combos like maybe anti combo burst moves as a get-off-me kind of ability similar to skull girls when they do a burst to push back opponents. Or a parry option to quick stun opponents, leaving a window for you to attack. Or perhaps use it to summon notable shields through out the Sonic series such as: Fire shield, Bubble shield, Magnet shield, Chao shield, Gaia Shield, Super shield, Speed shoes, Invincibility, ect. And still be capable of use at least three to go Hyper mode. Honestly you can utilize all of these different functions similar to Street Fighter 6's Drive system (Chaos Drive System lol). As far as a Sonic fighting game goes you could also implement an assist/character swap mechanic like Marvel vs Capcom or something (more specifically Ultimate 3) since the Sonic series puts a heavy emphasis on team work. And just for shits & giggles -- stage transitions and destructable environments similar to other 3D fighrers like Virtua Fighterss and Fighting Vipers, Tekken, DOA, Soul Caliber, 3D ps2 era Mortal Kombat games (Deadly Alliance, Deception, Armageddon ect.)
As for characters heres a few obvious and straight up cool ass picks:

Team Rose - Amy Rose, Cream & Cheese, Big The Cat & Froggy

I can't see this game without the arcade stand, and Chuck E. Cheese Pizza, because this is where I first played this there.
I think they chose "Hunter" because "Sniper" didn't feel fitting for who is essentially a mercenary-type character

I don't understand why people hated this game, its cute, charming, amazing music, great visuals, fun to play, awesome characters, etc. People hate on Sonic R too even though that game is also great, people who complain about the controls dont know how to use them properly, I explained that all you had to do was hold the bumpers down while you're turning to a friend and he was baffled that I somehow 100% completed a game he thought was the worst most hardest game ever, when in actuality, its just cute, charming and harmless fun. Sonic Fans expectations went up a bit too high at some point, I bet people loved this game when it came out in the arcades. People are starting to like it again too.

I feel like most people in the west experienced sonic the fighters through its arcade mode and not its versus mode. Which is a shame because I think the game holds up really well when compared to a lot of early 3d fighting games

Actually for a short period of time there was a playable version on modern PlayStation if you had PlayStation Plus there was old sonic games you could stream and I'm pretty sure it had the updates as well

As seen in Sonic Spinball, they were just casually toying with having more than 7 Emeralds, probably since adding a seventh in Sonic 2 had worked out so well and the franchise hadn't yet been fully standardized.

Fun little tid-bit. The Mecha Knuckles from Sonic R appears in the multiplayer versus mode in the new Sonic All Stars game as Knuckles' robot stand-in where everyone is replaced by robot replicas.
