    Wow! Skyler you're amazing!! Thank you so much for doing this video, we appreciate your shout out and support. As for the species of wood in the boxes, we only carry a few native species, they are going to be western "Claro" walnut, eastern cherry, myrtlewood and Western Big Leaf maple.

      @@woodworkingwithSkyler We had to, between your video and Leahs we've sold over 100 mystery boxes in 2 weeks, we've had to go into some of our older inventory to make new boxes out of lumber and not just from the cut off bin. This is good though. I've been ribbed for a year about these. I ordered 400 custom boxes and my dad thought it was a lifetime supply. We have his attention now and he's seeing the value in them more and being even more intentional on the mix and quality of the wood we put into them. UPS charges have also recently went up a bit as well.

    I bought a box of exotics online, rather disappointing for the money laid out, then I discovered church- run thrift stores. They usually have a good selection of exotics that are fashioned into shelfs, plaques, awards, etc. You can pretty much tell you've got a nice hunk just by the heft alone, and the fun part is they are usually $1-2 bucks each.

    To clean the wood you have a few options, you can use high pressure hose and dry the wood again( I wouldn’t go that way because they are too small)
    Or you can sand blast it with glass bead, probably the best way (the way I do it) or you can sand it/ use a die grinder or just leave it the way it is.
    Depending on what you want to do with it.
    If you’re using it with resin, I’d recommend a pressure pot to shrink the bubbles and to seal the burl first so you don’t get a heap of bubbles.I find clear resin to be the best as colour resin hides all the goodness in the burl.
    Everything i said is just my opinion and you should do what you think is best.

    • @NorthwestTimber
      @NorthwestTimber 2 месяца назад

      The burls are pressure washed when they are green so it may only need a wire brush cleaning. It was a little hard to see but it may have been starting to spalt and that is the darker/dirtiness making it look that way.

    I do quite a bit of epoxy. I recommend beginning with something small, like filling a crack, or knot hole, or void. I just use masking tape on the back side, well overlapping the hole or void. If on an edge I use masking tape backed with a strip of wood. Epoxy is like trying to contain thick water, It will find every little crack or hole to run out. If it is thick or deep hole do it in steps. Epoxy is full of bubbles after its mixed. I use a heat gun to pop the bubbles. If you pour to thick some of the bubbles get trapped, or worse come to the surface long after you think it is all good. I try to limit it to about 1/4 to 1/3 inch thick, pop the bubble and then add more. Be sure to put it all on a sheet of throw away plastic, good idea when mixing. The color dye is added after you mix, It takes a good 12 hours to set, so you have quite a bit of time to work with it. I let the surface be messy as it can be sanded or planed much like wood, but wait 24 hours before you do that. Be sure to work in a well ventilated area at the fumes are pretty bad, at least for me. Lots of good ideas on Utube.

    I forget the details, and I could remember it all wrong. You'll need to put the wood in a vacuum chamber, in a bath of a special type of resin, which will replace all of the air with resin. Then, I think you bake it for a bit. You'll need to look it up. But you want to get all of the air out of the wood, or you'll have those annoying bubbles.
