    Bentley, you should have mentioned that they have a small throat, so the food needs to be very small. And they will hunt and kill shrimp too. As to your last question: I have a 75 with a lot of various rainbows, but I have fallen in love with the latest version of wannamensis, (emeralds), and also C. Fasciata Kali Biru. Next spring I am going to get extra females for my males, and put them in separate biotope tanks. What I REALLY want is C. Fasciata, Alleni (Wapoga). Maybe one day!

I will definitely give them a try once my tank is ready. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!

    I keep my trifasciatus in my 180g - so much fun to watch them fly around the tank after water changes. Or to watch them steal food from clown loaches bigger than them. Thinking of getting some turquoise rainbows for my 40B shell dweller tank...
    When I bought mine, the store sold them only in pairs. When I said I wanted 6 females and 4 males, the "fishmonger" looked at me strangely and went to ask the owner. The owner let me have the extra females for free.

    Hello Bentley. I have a pH of 8 but TDS is over 400. What should I be aware of concerning this and related conductivity? I had water problems a few years back but fixed that with the Big Blue double carbon filter. I did water changed religiously untill local water parameters changed. I had one tank with nano fish and everytime I changed water things would die. After things settled down everytime I added a few new fish at least one would die in a day or two? Once I got filter that all stoped? Had been doing good water changes for several years with no problems then boom! Thanks again for info about new Bows at Dan's Fish. Shored up my M.Kiunga and scored some M Komeng river. Excited again after all my previous nightmares with water and Camallanus. Maybe someday when I grow up I can breed some of these and get them out to LFS's. Think alot of hobbyist are still not familiar with Bows and Lord knows how long they take to reach there full glory! Last but not least you can't judge a rainbow by a picture! Have to keep them and BE sure to get good stock for any newbies!

    • @BentleyPascoe
      @BentleyPascoe  3 года назад

      Typically very well, but they are very boisterous eaters and can, at times, be so fast and eager to eat that other less energetic eaters might struggle to get food. If you keep that in mind and feed accordingly they do very well with a large variety of fish. I've kept mine with plecos, corydoras, otocinclus, tetras, white clouds, danios, gourami and angelfish.

    My dream fish right now is some praecox rainbows, but I wanna wait until I can get a really nice big tank for them, I'm in the midwest and I have liquid rock water, so I think those will be better for me, still trying to learn more about the zillion different species though

    • @BentleyPascoe
      @BentleyPascoe  4 года назад

      Rainbows love that midwest water, the good news with praecox is they're dwarf rainbows, so they don't need as large a tank. Something like a 40 breeder or 55 is perfect for a 15-20 fish sized colony with weekly water changes, or do 10 for smaller water changes.

  • @metrikal1
    @metrikal1 4 года назад

    I just wanna point out some super easy live foods, maybe a little contentious for some people, but mosquito larvae is the best thing ever. I have a fountain out back, but other people use buckets. My tetras sized up and colored up after just two weeks.
    The other one is fruit flies, you can get flightless starters at petco, or I just made a trap and caught some. Running the culture is super easy and cheap, if you catch wild ones with wings, just exploit how temps effect them, 15 mins in the fridge and they can't fly, 15 mins in the freezer and they either die or go into hard torpor, perfect for feeding. Daphnia are awesome, but require so much set up and you have to baby them all the time or they crash on you, which they will anyway unless your setup is huge

    • @BentleyPascoe
      @BentleyPascoe  4 года назад +1

      A great food for adults with the larva, but for fry, they're a little small so it's a risk. I agree if you can cultivate them without issue, they make wonderful live foods for adults. Daphnia is also amazing for juveniles and adults. Great points!

      If you can find aytinjo, they are usually ok as a small group (up to 6) in a 40B or Uter Boesemani. The rarest right now is the Kromsa which max out about 3", so you can do 10 in a 40B or 6 in 20L or 29g.

    I went whole hog on them in my 240. Sure,I have the divver fish..Rams,Tetra's Denison barbs and assorted other small fish...but the main attraction are the Boesemani,New Guinea,and Turquoise Rainbows. What I've learned is that Boesemani DO like some greenery in their diets..and will reluctantly nibble on Vallisneria or the softer Hydrocotyle tripartita. But!..they love cooked Spinach no 1. and broccoli,Cauliflower,Zucchini are enjoyed also.
    I also see why New Guinea have long pointy noses..they can get to feed that falls between stones and driftwood better than any other Rainbows. Haven't regretted my choice one iota for that tank. I wish it was 500 gallons...and up.

    Bentley does the wild habitat have any influence outside of the parameters you are giving? I remember in the full length video you did on Rainbows and the why's of collecting wild fish etc. You suggested some came from drying up rivers or streams. I have a 150 gallon I would like to feature Rainbows in. I want it right before a fish hits the water. My tap pH is 7.4 to 7.6 my Tap TDS is about 230.
    I can't be too optimistic as to the diversity of the Rainbow selection up here, but I want it to be a meaningful population.

    • @BentleyPascoe
      @BentleyPascoe  4 года назад +1

      Rainbows aren't as deeply bred (by raw generations that is) as some of the other aquacultured fish in the hobby, meaning that many of the fish we get are only 5-6 generations from wild and many cases are 2-3 generations. This being said, rainbows can take a wide variety of parameters, the ranges I gave are just playing it safe.

      I keep my Goyder River at 16c to 30c (living room temp) my tap water same as yours but I use calcium carbonate in all my tanks. Murray River 8c to 32c outside in a pond - big flower pots however a few years ago when it got to 48c and didn't cool down much for a couple of weeks I lost a lot and had to bring some inside. Temp not a huge issue with many Australian Rainbows, water is - PNG Rainbows temp is important and even fussier about clean water so I don't keep them anymore -- I don't keep fish that need heaters, I prefer a simpler life :)

    • @BentleyPascoe
      @BentleyPascoe  4 года назад +2

      This highly depends on planting (if any), filtration, and water changes. You could easily pull off 15-20 Boesemani in a 75g with very good filtration and weekly 50% water changes. Boesemani are a pretty slow grower, expect them to hit roughly 3" in the first year, then slow down, BUT they will grow faster when they have large swim spaces to grow out in and with a good diet.

      Even very large amanos are likely to get picked off by adult rainbows unfortunately

    Hello again Bentley! I’m upgrading my 120g to a 210g within the next couple months for my clown loaches (I’m a clown loach addict, I have 27)
    I’m struggling to find a good tank mate for them as I want the top half of the tank to be used as they’re obviously bottom dwellers. I was strongly considering Bosemani Rainbow fish but my set up will have a few flaws from what you suggested in this video.
    It would be a low profile hardscape with just wood and rock, no plants, and the temp would be 80-82°F.. do you foresee this as a reason to look at perhaps another fish? Any input would be appreciated. (I have no plans to breed the rainbows and I have no problems with adding way more females than males ^^)

      @BentleyPascoe  3 года назад

      Tiger barbs do exceptionally well with clown loaches and some of the New Guinea/Papua bows can handle that temperature, but they prefer it a little cooler

      @@BentleyPascoe i was going to do tiger barbs but they seem to hang lower than the rainbows do. I’ll look into the rainbows you mentioned ty!

    would this tank size be ok for boesemani rainbow fish, 43 inch long. 21.6 inch deep, 24 inch high. which is 90 us gallons, its a big tank but only 3.6 foot long

    • @BentleyPascoe
      @BentleyPascoe  4 года назад

      Should do fine for most Rainbows. There are a few of the "biggest" you might avoid, but realistically speaking good for a group of 8-10 full size adults or upwards of 30 younger ones, if you do a group of 10-12 you'd be set.

    How long will it take for rainbow fry to reach adulthood or big enough to sell

    • @BentleyPascoe
      @BentleyPascoe  4 года назад +1

      6 months if you consistently feed baby brine 2-3 times per day for sellable size, early adult is about a year

    How do you tell a male from female? Especially younger rainbows? I do have a 40 gallon breeder and only want maybe 1 or 2 types in there. I have 2 Australians right now but looking to get a few more. What do you suggest? 4 more Australians?

    • @BentleyPascoe
      @BentleyPascoe  3 года назад +1

      I would add more yes, 4 is pretty good. To sex, you have to learn how to look at the dorsal fins. Overlapping dorsals should be male, gap or barely touching is more likely female.

    • @rachelo315
      @rachelo315 3 года назад

      @@BentleyPascoe ok. I think I have 1 of each. The one that appears to be male is bigger, more colorful and the first dorsal kinda flows into the next. The other is smaller, not as colorful and the fins don't touch. It's probably hard to sex them as bebes. Petco sells them but they're small. So stick with Australians only then?

      Two great online retailers would be Imperial Tropicals and Wet Spot Tropical Fish. Dan's Fish also gets great rainbows in from time to time and has the best shipping I've ever seen. You can also try individual breeders through Aquabid or the Rainbowfish Live Facebook group

      @@MW-ut3dk Dean does not. I very rarely do, mostly because my work schedule makes shipping neigh impossible without taking an entire day off and that usually requires at least a month before said day of scheduling.

    Where can I get Gary Lange rainbows?

    • @BentleyPascoe
      @BentleyPascoe  2 года назад +1

      There are a few places that have Gary's strains like Wet Spot Tropical Fish gets some and Imperial Tropicals. You can also look at Dan's Fish who sources his rainbows from one of the best breeders in the US who gets many fish from Gary or Dan sources his imports from a collecting partner of Gary's out in Indonesia. Otherwise I would look at sellers on Aquabid, if they got their fish from Gary initially, they will usually say that.

      Make sure the parameters are good - ammonia, nitrite, pH and temperature. Otherwise this is most likely just some stress and should return within a day or so as they settle in.
